Abstract

This is a survey article on an old topic in classical analysis. We present some new developments in asymptotics in the last fifty years. We start with the classical method of Darboux and its generalizations, including an uniformity treatment which has a direct application to the Heisenberg polynomials. We then present the development of an asymptotic theory for difference equations, which is a major advancement since the work of Birkhoff and Trjitzinsky in 1933. A new method was introduced into this field in the nineteen nineties, which is now known as the nonlinear steepest descent method or the Riemann-Hilbert approach. The advantage of this method is that it can be applied to orthogonal polynomials which do not satisfy any differential or difference equations neither do they have any integral representations. As an example, we mention the case of orthogonal polynomials with respect to the Freud weight. Finally, we show how the Wiener-Hopf technique can be used to derive asymptotic expansions for the solutions of an integral equation on a half line., Comment: 46 pages

Abstract

This paper describes LFRic: the new weather and climate modelling system being developed by the UK Met Office to replace the existing Unified Model in preparation for exascale computing in the 2020s. LFRic uses the GungHo dynamical core and runs on a semi-structured cubed-sphere mesh. The design of the supporting infrastructure follows object orientated principles to facilitate modularity and the use of external libraries where possible. In particular, a `separation of concerns' between the science code and parallel code is imposed to promote performance portability. An application called PSyclone, developed at the STFC Hartree centre, can generate the parallel code enabling deployment of a single source science code onto different machine architectures. This paper provides an overview of the scientific requirement, the design of the software infrastructure, and examples of PSyclone usage. Preliminary performance results show strong scaling and an indication that hybrid MPI/OpenMP performs better than pure MPI., Comment: 41 pages, 10 figures. EASC2018

Abstract

We consider a pair of special functions, $u_\beta$ and $v_\beta$, defined respectively as the solutions to the integral equations \begin{equation*} u(x)=1+\int^\infty_0 \frac {K(t) u(t) dt}{t+x} ~~\mbox{and}~~v(x)=1-\int^\infty_0 \frac{ K(t) v(t) dt}{t+x},~~x\in [0, \infty), \end{equation*} where $K(t)= \frac {1} \pi \exp \left (- t^\beta \sin\frac {\pi\beta} 2\right )\sin \left ( t^\beta\cos\frac{\pi\beta} 2 \right )$ for $\beta\in (0, 1)$. In this note, we establish the existence and uniqueness of $u_\beta$ and $v_\beta$ which are bounded and continuous in $[0, +\infty)$. Also, we show that a solution to a model Riemann-Hilbert problem in Kriecherbauer and McLaughlin [Int. Math. Res. Not., 1999] can be constructed explicitly in terms of these functions. A preliminary asymptotic study is carried out on the Stokes phenomena of these functions by making use of their connection formulas. Abstract

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence and mortality rates have been increasing among young patients (YP), for uncertain reasons. It is unclear whether YP have a distinct tumor biology or merit a different treatment approach to older patients (OP). METHODS: We reviewed prospectively collected data from consecutive patients with metastatic CRC (MCRC) enrolled in the multi-site Treatment of Recurrent and Advanced Colorectal Cancer (TRACC) Australian registry. Clinicopathological features, treatment and survival outcomes were compared between YP (<50 years) and OP (≥50 years). RESULTS: Of 3692 patients diagnosed August 2009 - March 2023, 14 % (513) were YP. YP were more likely than OP to be female (52% vs. 40 %, P < 0.0001), have ECOG performance status 0-1 (94% vs. 81 %, P < 0.0001), to have a left-sided primary (72% vs. 63 %, P = 0.0008) and to have fewer comorbidities (90% vs. 60 % Charleston score 0, P < 0.0001). There were no differences in the available molecular status, which was more complete in YP. YP were more likely to have de novo metastatic disease (71% vs. 57 %, P < 0.0001). YP were more likely to undergo curative hepatic resection (27% vs. 17 %, P < 0.0001), to receive any chemotherapy (93% vs. 78 % (P < 0.0001), and to receive 3+ lines of chemotherapy (30% vs. 24 % (P < 0.0034)). Median first-line progression free survival (10.2 versus 10.6 months) was similar for YP vs OP, but overall survival (32.1 versus 25.4 months, HR = 0.745, P < 0.0001) was longer in YP. CONCLUSION: Known prognostic variables mostly favored YP versus OP with newly diagnosed mCRC, who were also more heavily treated. Consistent with this, overall survival outcomes were improved. This data does not support that CRC in YP represent a distinct subset of mCRC patients, or that a modified treatment approach is warranted.

Abstract

Current customers’ demands focus on the nutritional and sensory quality of cattle meat. Candidate gene approach allows identification of genetic polymorphisms that have a measurable effect on traits of interest. The aim of this work is to identify new molecular markers for beef production through an association study using 27 candidate genes and 314 purebred bulls from 11 European cattle breeds. Twelve genes were found associated with different lipid and meat quality traits, and among these stand out the considerable effect of CAST on fatness score, CGGBP1 on growth traits, HSPB1 on the percentage of lauric acid (12:0) and phospholipid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA 22:6 n − 3), RORA on the ratio of light absorption (K) to light scattering (S) (K/S), and TNFA on lightness (L*). Most of these traits are related to post-mortem muscle biochemical changes, which are key factors controlling meat quality and consumers’ acceptance. Abstract

Understanding which are the genetic variants underlying the nutritional and sensory properties of beef, enables improvement in meat quality. The aim of this study is to identify new molecular markers for meat quality through an association study using candidate genes included in the PPARG and PPARGC1A networks given their master role in coordinating metabolic adaptation in fat tissue, muscle and liver. Amongst the novel associations found in this study, selection of the positive marker variants of genes such as BCL3, LPL, PPARG, SCAP, and SCD will improve meat organoleptic characteristics and health by balancing the n − 6 to n − 3 fatty acid ratio in meat. Also previous results on GDF8 and DGAT1 were validated, and the novel ATF4, HNF4A and PPARGC1A associations, although slightly under the significance threshold, are consistent with their physiological roles. Abstract

Traffic congestion and roadside emissions are severe and common problems in metropolitans. As a promising and sustainable solution to mitigating these vehicle externalities, shared mobility reduces the required vehicle fleet size for serving a given level of demand by sharing a vehicle among travelers with similar schedules and itineraries. Public acceptance is the key to the success of shared mobility development. This study investigates the acceptance of drivers and passengers of two typical competing shared mobility modes, car-pooling and taxi ride sharing, taking Hong Kong as a case study. For an empirical evaluation, an on-street stated preference survey was conducted, and 829 respondents, including 257 private car owners and 572 non-private car owners were interviewed about their travel preferences in three given hypothetical scenarios. In total, 2,487 observations were collected for calibrating two proposed logit-based discrete choice models for drivers and passengers. The model results show that the out-of-pocket cost, in-vehicle travel time, and out-of-vehicle time are key factors influencing travelers' decisions toward car-pooling and taxi ride-sharing. An equilibrium model was proposed and an iteration solution procedure was applied to obtain a convergent solution to balance the demand and supply of drivers and passengers for car-pooling services. Furthermore, sensitivity analyses were carried out to examine the effects of variations in proportions of travel cost and taxi fare shared by passengers for car-pooling and taxi ride-sharing, and to assist in the formulation of relevant transport policies. Abstract

Background & aims: An estimated 38% of adults worldwide have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). From individual impacts to widespread public health and economic consequences, the implications of this disease are profound. This study aimed to develop an aligned, prioritised fatty liver disease research agenda for the global health community. Methods: Nine co-chairs drafted initial research priorities, subsequently reviewed by 40 core authors and debated during a three-day in-person meeting. Following a Delphi methodology, over two rounds, a large panel (R1 n = 344, R2 n = 288) reviewed the priorities, via Qualtrics XM, indicating agreement using a four-point Likert-scale and providing written feedback. The core group revised the draft priorities between rounds. In R2, panellists also ranked the priorities within six domains: epidemiology, models of care, treatment and care, education and awareness, patient and community perspectives, and leadership and public health policy. Results: The consensus-built fatty liver disease research agenda encompasses 28 priorities. The mean percentage of ‘agree’ responses increased from 78.3 in R1 to 81.1 in R2. Five priorities received unanimous combined agreement (‘agree’ + ‘somewhat agree’); the remaining 23 priorities had >90% combined agreement. While all but one of the priorities exhibited at least a super-majority of agreement (>66.7% ‘agree’), 13 priorities had [removed]90% combined agreement. Conclusions: Adopting this multidisciplinary consensus-built research priorities agenda can deliver a step-change in addressing fatty liver disease, mitigating against its individual and societal harms and proactively altering its natural history through prevention, identification, treatment, and care. This agenda should catalyse the global health community's efforts to advance and accelerate responses to this widespread and fast-growing public health threat. Abstract

The Qing state, driven by Confucian precepts of good government and urgent practical needs, committed vast resources to its granaries. Nourish the People traces the basic practices of this system, analyzes the organizational bases of its successes and failures, and examines variant practices in different regions. The volume concludes with an assessment of the granary system’s social and economic impact and historical comparison with the food supply policies of other states.
