18. Curandeirismo in the Reconcavo of Bahia : a study in cultural syncretism based on the fusion of African, indigenous and European curing practices

Abstract

The study records thaumaturgic methods of curing and preventing illness and misfortune as practiced by curandeiros (curers, folk doctors) using an ethnographic-linguistic approach based on fieldwork in the Reconcavo area of the State of Bahia in Northeast Brazil. The Reconcavo is a fairly narrow strip of land surrounding the Bay of All the Saints with its social and economic focus at Salvador, the capital of Bahia State. The study is structured to give particular attention to an examination of the religious based on which these practices may be founded, to include condomble, a religion of African origin which became rooted in this area with the importation of slaves, principally from west Africa from the middle of the sixteenth century to the middle of the of the nineteenth; Catholicism as introduced by the Portuguese and other Iberian colonizers; indigenous religions and Spiritism. Points of similarity in curing methods that may have existed among African, Puropean and indigenous cultures represented in the Reconcavo are also examined in an attempt trace how some of these similarities may have fused in a gradual process of syncretism to produce corandeirismo as it exists in the area today. The study is concluded with an assessment of the extent to which curandeirismo is practiced in the Reconcavo and the likelihood of its survival. Proceeding from a brief historical survey of the Reconcavo and its colonization, development and economy, the writer examines the different religious currents brought by colonization and population movement, giving a resume of the main doctrines of Spiritism and an account of traditional Candomble to include an exposition of the patterns of belief on which the present Candomble de caboclo is based. He then discusses the persistence and evolution of African religion in Brazil, and the dual role of the priest and curer in African-based religion. Aspects of the curing process such as ritual beating, fumigation, bathing and symbolic purgation of evil are then examined, together with details of ritual procedure and the incantations which accompany many of them. Powders and herbs, their properties and uses are then analysed, the function and composition of amulets in preventing and curing illness is then studied, as is the use of curing prayers, a number of which are transcribed and annotated. The study is illustrated with maps and photographs. Herbs employed in the rituals discussed are listed in appendices, and there is a glossary of non-English terms.

Abstract

The objective of this study was two-fold: (1) to investigate the response of asthmatic subjects who were 60 to 75 y of age to inhaled sulfuric acid, and (2) to compare that response to findings from healthy subjects in the same age group. Nine subjects who had asthma and eight healthy subjects participated. Each subject was exposed to clean air, an inert ammonium sulfate aerosol, or 70 [mu]g/[m.sup.3] sulfuric acid during a 40-min exposure period composed of 30 min at rest and 10 min of light exercise on a treadmill. The sulfuric acid was delivered twice, one preceded by a lemonade drink to neutralize oral concentrations of ammonia. Exposures were separated by at least 1 wk. Oral ammonia levels and pulmonary function parameters forced expiratory volume in one second, forced vital capacity, and total respiratory resistance) were measured before and after each exposure. None of the functional parameters in either group showed significant changes. However, total respiratory resistance changes from baseline after sulfuric acid exposure were significantly higher (+ 16%) in the asthmatic subjects, compared with the healthy subjects (- 6%). These data suggest that older subjects are not at increased risk for adverse respiratory effects from inhalation of sulfuric acid by virtue of age alone, and older subjects with asthma are slightly more vulnerable than are their healthy peers., ONE GOAL of the Clean Air Act is to protect susceptible individuals from the adverse effects of air pollutant inhalation. Abstract

To better evaluate the prognosis for psychiatric patients with the diagnosis of schizoaffective (SA) psychosis, a condition that includes both schizophrenia and an affective (emotional) disorder, investigators conducted a retrospective study of 68 patients discharged from one psychiatric facility during a 25-year period. Interviews were carried out primarily by telephone with former patients (62 percent) or their significant others. The follow-up study was carried out an average of 15 years after discharge. The variable that measured outcome was ''sum'' global functioning since the time of discharge, formed by rating subsequent hospitalizations, social and work functioning, and the prevalence of symptoms since discharge. This information constituted the basis for rediagnosis based on the criteria of DSM-III (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, third edition): using these standards, 19 patients were schizoaffective manic, 33 were schizoaffective depressed, and 16 were schizoaffective bipolar. Results showed that, while no variable was a strong predictor of the outcome of SA, people with more skills prior to their first hospitalization were functioning better than those with fewer skills. Factors that predicted poorer outcome were the presence of bizarre delusions, concreteness (impaired ability to think abstractly), and inappropriate affect. The results imply that SA may be a composite of psychiatric disorders that lies somewhere between schizophrenia and the mood disorders.
