We assessed the impacts of three approaches to thinning from below with varying spatial patterns on several stand and individual tree variables for interior Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca (Beissn.) Franco), interior spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss × Picea engelmannii Engelm.), and lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl. Ex Loud. var. latifolia Englem.) in central British Columbia, Canada. The three thinning treatments were two experimental "clumped" treatments (3 m Clumped and 5 m Clumped) and the Standard (more uniform spacing) thinning treatment that was employed operationally at that time. We used long-term data from 24 plots measured five times over 21 years. Thinning increased stand basal area increment, with the plots that received the 5 m Clumped treatment having significantly higher periodic annual relative basal area increment than the unthinned Control plots. The responses for the two clumped treatments were not any lower than the Standard. The 3 m Clumped treatment was best if one is concerned about fast recovery of the growing space; however, the 5 m Clumped spacing treatment may be preferable if higher individual tree vigour is needed for resistance and resilience to fire, insects, and disease. In species with large and complex genomes such as conifers, dense linkage maps are a useful resource for supporting genome assembly and laying the genomic groundwork at the structural, populational, and functional levels. However, most of the 600+ extant conifer species still lack extensive genotyping resources, which hampers the development of high-density linkage maps. In this study, we developed a linkage map relying on 21,570 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers in Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis [Bong.] Carr.), a long-lived conifer from western North America that is widely planted for productive forestry in the British Isles. We used a single-step mapping approach to efficiently combine RAD-seq and genotyping array SNP data for 528 individuals from 2 full-sib families. As expected for spruce taxa, the saturated map contained 12 linkages groups with a total length of 2,142 cM. The positioning of 5,414 unique gene coding sequences allowed us to compare our map with that of other Pinaceae species, which provided evidence for high levels of synteny and gene order conservation in this family. We then developed an integrated map for P. sitchensis and Picea glauca based on 27,052 markers and 11,609 gene sequences. Altogether, these 2 linkage maps, the accompanying catalog of 286,159 SNPs and the genotyping chip developed, herein, open new perspectives for a variety of fundamental and more applied research objectives, such as for the improvement of spruce genome assemblies, or for marker-assisted sustainable management of genetic resources in Sitka spruce and related species. The evolutionary dynamics of tree species are influenced by their specific climatic environments, and their ability to persist is determined by adaptive strategies such as broad climate tolerance, phenotypic plasticity or genetic differentiation. Biogeographical predictions indicate that populations located at the edges of their ranges are more likely to experience heightened vulnerability to climatic fluctuations due to approaching tolerance limits. However, if local phenotypic acclimation or genetic adaptation has taken place, trees near the edge of their range could demonstrate comparable sensitivity to freeze and drought as the rest of the sampled population. Nevertheless, there remains uncertainty regarding the extent of developmental and evolutionary adjustments in climate sensitivity across the entire ranges of many tree species.Here, we document the biogeography of tree growth sensitivity to freeze and soil water and vapour pressure deficits during 1950–2018 using an extensive multi‐species tree‐ring dataset of 35,784 trees at 4535 sites covering boreal, temperate conifer and temperate deciduous forests of Canada. We quantify the relationships between tree radial growth increment and seasonal climate variables and explore factors driving the observed patterns of annual growth and climate sensitivity such as species, regional climate and local site conditions, and tree age and size.Freeze and drought had widespread impacts on tree growth that were contingent on the presence of focal species in interaction with tree size. An indirect growth thermal limitation towards cold/wet edges, occurring through the site moisture conditions, was observed in seven widespread species (e.g. Picea glauca, Picea mariana and Larix laricina). Moreover, six species had negative drought impacts more strongly expressed towards their warm/dry edges (e.g. Abies balsamea, Betula papyrifera and Pseudotsuga menziesii). However, widespread Picea, Pinus and Populus species showed no indication of increased sensitivity to soil water conditions at these edges.Synthesis. Our findings support the idea of evolutionary or acclimatization adjustments in the development of populations in response to long‐term climate conditions experienced in their respective locations. This underscores the importance of incorporating phenotypic and genomic data into future analyses of climate change impacts, which would enhance our ability to predict potential ecological shifts. Aim: Seedling recruitment is a vital process for forest regeneration and is influenced by various factors such as stand composition, climate, and soil disturbance. We conducted a long‐term field experiment (18 years) to study the effects of these factors and their interactions on seedling recruitment. Location: Our study focused on five main species in boreal mixed woods of eastern Canada: trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides), paper birch (Betula papyrifera), white spruce (Picea glauca), balsam fir (Abies balsamea), and white cedar (Thuja occidentalis). Methods: Sixteen 1‐m2 seedling monitoring subplots were set up in each of seven stands originating from different wildfires (fire years ranging from 1760 to 1944), with a soil scarification treatment applied to every other subplot. Annual new seedling counts were related to growing‐season climate (mean temperature, growing degree days and drought code), scarification, and stand effects via a Bayesian generalized linear mixed model. Results: Soil scarification had a large positive effect on seedling recruitment for three species (aspen, birch and spruce). As expected, high mean temperatures during the seed production period (two years prior to seedling emergence) increased seedling recruitment for all species but aspen. Contrary to other studies, we did not find a positive effect of dry conditions during the seed production period. Furthermore, high values of growing degree days suppressed conifer seedling recruitment. Except for white cedar, basal area was weakly correlated with seedling abundance, suggesting a small number of reproductive individuals is sufficient to saturate seedling recruitment. Conclusion: Our findings underscore the importance of considering multiple factors, such as soil disturbance, climate, and stand composition, as well as their effects on different life stages when developing effective forest management strategies to promote regeneration in boreal mixed‐wood ecosystems. Simple Summary: We conducted this study in the boreal forest of Québec, Canada, to compare insect damage on white spruce (Picea glauca) trees within open-canopy, multispecies plantations, and trees naturally regenerated under mature mixed-wood canopies. Our plantation sites were established post-clearcutting and compared with naturally regenerated post-fire sites dominated by trembling aspen. Over two years, observations were made on young trees from ten sites in each environment, focusing on overall rates of herbivory, galls, spruce budworm damage, and sawfly defoliation. Despite a minor increase in spruce budworm damage in under-canopy forests from 2020 to 2021, overall, damage levels remained low, suggesting minimal impact on tree growth or mortality at this early outbreak stage. Contrary to initial assumptions, we found that insect damage was comparably low in both plantation and naturally regenerated environments, casting doubt on the idea that the enhanced sunlight and accelerated growth observed in plantations necessarily increase their susceptibility to pest attacks. In the context of global forest restoration efforts and Canada's pledge to plant 2 billion trees by 2050, the resilience of white spruce plantations to insect damage is of paramount importance. Amidst concerns over increasing pest damage due to climate change, the observed resilience of multispecies plantations underpins the effectiveness of ecosystem-based management in maintaining low insect damage levels without compromising growth. This balance highlights the potential of mixed-species plantations to mimic natural forest conditions, contributing to biodiversity conservation and sustainable forestry practices. This research illuminates the intricate dynamics between tree growth, environmental conditions, and pest vulnerability, offering valuable insights for future forest management and conservation strategies. In managed boreal forests, both plantations and natural regeneration are used to re-establish a cohort of conifer trees following harvest or disturbance. Young trees in open plantations generally grow more rapidly than under forest canopies, but more rapid growth could be compromised by greater insect damage. We compared insect damage on white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss, Pinaceae) growing in plantations with naturally regenerated trees under mature forest canopies in boreal forests (Québec, Canada). We selected ten sites in the naturally regenerated forest and in small, multispecies plantations and sampled ten young trees of 2.5–3 m (per site) in late summer 2020 and again in early and late summer 2021. We compared overall rates of herbivory, galls (adelgids), damage by the spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana, Clemens), and defoliation from sawflies. Overall, insect herbivory damage remained at similarly low levels in both habitats; an average of 9.3% of expanding shoots were damaged on forest trees and 7.7% in plantation trees. Spruce budworm damage increased from 2020 to 2021 and remained higher in under-canopy trees, but damage rates were negligible at this early stage of the outbreak (1.5% in forest vs. 0.78% of buds damaged on plantation trees). Background and aims: Changes in water availability during the growing season are becoming more frequent due to climate change. Our study aimed to compare the fine-root acclimation capacity (plasticity) of six temperate tree species aged six years and exposed to high or low growing season soil water availability over five years. Methods: Root samples were collected from the five upper strata of mineral soil to a total soil depth of 30 cm in monoculture plots of Acer saccharum Marsh., Betula papyrifera Marsh., Larix laricina K. Koch, Pinus strobus L., Picea glauca (Moench) Voss and Quercus rubra L. established at the International Diversity Experiment Network with Trees (IDENT) field experiment in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada. Four replicates of each monoculture were subjected to high or low water availability treatments. Results: Absorptive fine root density increased by 67% for Larix laricina, and 90% for Picea glauca, under the high-water availability treatment at 0–5 cm soil depth. The two late successional, slower growing tree species, Acer saccharum and Picea glauca, showed higher plasticity in absorptive fine root biomass in the upper 5 cm of soil (PIv = 0.36 & 0.54 respectively), and lower plasticity in fine root depth over the entire 30 cm soil profile compared to the early successional, faster growing tree species Betula papyrifera and Larix laricina. Conclusion: Temperate tree species show contrasting acclimation responses in absorptive fine root biomass and rooting depth to differences in water availability. Data collected over a 30-year period from an experiment replicated across 21 locations in western Canada are used to explore the effects of precommercial thinning of trembling aspen to a range of densities in combination with three initial white spruce densities on tree growth and stand dynamics. Increasing differentiation amongst the 15 treatments was observed with age after thinning for both spruce and aspen responses. Spruce height and diameter declined with increasing aspen density. At age 10 spruce diameter with no aspen was 1.5× that of spruce in unthinned while it was 2.6× that of spruce in unthinned at age 28. Following thinning aspen DBH and crown width declined with increasing density of retained aspen while slenderness and height to crown base of aspen increased. Thinning to 1500 aspen·ha−1 resulted in aspen DBH that was 22% larger relative to the unthinned at age 28. Spruce volume and stemwood biomass at age 90, estimated using the Mixedwood Growth Model (MGM21), declined with increasing initial aspen density, with the complete removal of aspen resulting in nearly double the spruce volume of unthinned plots. However, total stand volume, total stand biomass, and stemwood carbon at age 90 are predicted to be largest in mixed stands with aspen densities of 1500 stems·ha−1 or higher. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Conifers are long-lived and slow-evolving, thus requiring effective defences against their fast-evolving insect natural enemies. The copy number variation (CNV) of two key acetophenone biosynthesis genes Ugt5/Ugt5b and βglu-1 may provide a plausible mechanism underlying the constitutively variable defence in white spruce (Picea glauca) against its primary defoliator, spruce budworm. This study develops a long-insert sequence capture probe set (Picea_hung_p1.0) for quantifying copy number of βglu-1-like, Ugt5-like genes and single-copy genes on 38 Norway spruce (Picea abies) and 40 P. glauca individuals from eight and nine provenances across Europe and North America respectively. We developed local assemblies (Piabi_c1.0 and Pigla_c.1.0), full-length transcriptomes (PIAB_v1 and PIGL_v1), and gene models to characterise the diversity of βglu-1 and Ugt5 genes. We observed very large copy numbers of βglu-1, with up to 381 copies in a single P. glauca individual. We observed among-provenance CNV of βglu-1 in P. glauca but not P. abies. Ugt5b was predominantly single-copy in both species. This study generates critical hypotheses for testing the emergence and mechanism of extreme CNV, the dosage effect on phenotype, and the varying copy number of genes with the same pathway. Drought frequency and intensity are projected to increase with climate change, thus amplifying stress on forest trees. Resilience to drought implicates physiological traits such as xylem conductivity and wood anatomical traits, which are related to growth and wood density. Integrating drought-stress response traits at the juvenile stage into breeding criteria could help promote the survival of planted seedlings under current and future climate and thus, improve plantation success. We assessed in greenhouse the influence of drought-induced stress on 600 two-year-old white spruce (Picea glauca) seedlings from 25 clonal lines after two consecutive growing seasons. Three levels of drought-induced stress were applied: control, moderate and severe. Seedlings were also planted at a 45° angle to clearly separate compression from normal wood. We looked at the phenotypic and genetic effects of drought stress on xylem specific hydraulic conductivity, lumen diameter, tracheid diameter and length, and the number of pits per tracheid in the normal wood. We detected no significant effects of drought stress except for tracheid length, which decreased with increasing drought stress. We found low to high estimates of trait heritability, which generally decreased with increasing drought stress. Genetic correlations were higher than phenotypic correlations for all treatments. Specific conductivity was genetically highly correlated positively with lumen diameter and tracheid length under all treatments. Tracheid length and diameter were always negatively correlated genetically, indicating a trade-off in resource allocation. Moderate to high genetic correlations sometimes in opposite direction were observed between physico-anatomical and productivity traits, also indicating trade-offs. A large variation was observed among clones for all physico-anatomical traits, but clonal ranks were generally stable between control and drought-induced treatments. Our results indicate the possibility of early screening of genetic material for desirable wood anatomical attributes under normal growing conditions, thus allowing to improve the drought resilience of young trees. Conifers growing in temperate forests utilize sustained forms of thermal dissipation during winter to protect the photosynthetic apparatus from damage, which can be monitored via pronounced reductions in photochemical efficiency (F v/ F m) during winter. Eastern white pine (Pinus strobus L.) and white spruce (Picea   glauca (Moench) Voss) are known to recover from winter stress at different rates, with pine recovering more slowly than spruce, suggesting different mechanisms for sustained dissipation in these species. Our objectives were to monitor pine and spruce throughout spring recovery in order to provide insights into key mechanisms for sustained dissipation in both species. We measured chlorophyll fluorescence, pigments, and abundance and phosphorylation status of key photosynthetic proteins. We found that both species rely on two forms of sustained dissipation involving retention of high amounts of antheraxanthin (A) + zeaxanthin (Z), one that is very slowly reversible and temperature independent and one that is more dynamic and occurs only on subzero days. Differences in protein abundance suggest that spruce, but not pine, likely upregulates cyclic or alternative pathways of electron transport involving the cytochrome b6f complex and photosystem I (PSI). Both species show an increased sustained phosphorylation of the D1 protein on subzero days, and spruce additionally shows dramatic increases in the sustained phosphorylation of light-harvesting complex II (LHCII) and other PSII core proteins on subzero days only, suggesting that a mechanism of sustained dissipation that is temperature dependent requires sustained phosphorylation of photosynthetic proteins in spruce, possibly allowing for direct energy transfer from PSII to PSI as a mechanism of photoprotection. The data suggest differences in strategy among conifers in mechanisms of sustained thermal dissipation in response to winter stress. Additionally, the flexible induction of sustained A + Z and phosphorylation of photosynthetic proteins in response to subzero temperatures during spring recovery seem to be important in providing photoprotection during transitional periods with high temperature fluctuation. Baseline studies of small rodent populations in undisturbed ecosystems are rare. We report here 50 years of monitoring and experimentation in Yukon of a dominant rodent species in the North American boreal forest, the red‐backed vole Clethrionomys rutilus. These voles breed in summer, weigh 20–25 g, and reach a maximum density of 20 to 25 per ha. Their populations have shown consistent 3–4‐year cycles for the last 50 years with the only change being that peak densities averaged 8/ha until 2000 and 18/ha since that year. During the last 25 years, we have measured food resources, predator numbers, and winter weather, and for 1‐year social interactions, to estimate their contribution to changes in the rate of summer increase and the rate of overwinter decline. All these potential limiting factors could contribute to changes in density, and we measured their relative contributions statistically with multiple regressions. The rate of winter decline in density was related to both food supply and winter severity. The rate of summer increase was related to summer berry crops and white spruce cone production. No measure of predator numbers was related to winter or summer changes in vole abundance. There was a large signal of climate change effects in these populations. There is no density dependence in summer population growth and only a weak one in winter population declines. None of our results provide a clear understanding of what generates 3–4‐year cycles in these voles, and the major missing piece may be an understanding of social interactions at high density. Picea × darwyniana Björk & Goward was recently proposed to replace Picea albertiana S. Brown as the representative taxon for the hybrid offspring of Picea glauca (Moench) Voss and Picea engelmannii Parry ex Engelm., but should be considered invalid for three reasons. First, the proponents failed to document in any way that the P. albertiana isotypes were Picea glauca × mariana Little & Pauley hybrids, as they claimed. Secondly, the P. albertiana isotypes lacked pubescent twigs, purple markings on their seed cones, and denticulate cone-scale margins, which are characteristics of P. glauca × mariana. This indicates a misinterpretation of the P. albertiana parentage. Lastly, P. × darwyniana appears to be an example of P. albertiana ssp. ogilviei Strong & Hills. As the latter is an earlier and validly published name, P. × darwyniana is an illegitimate replacement for plants within the P. glauca × engelmannii (=P.a. ssp. albertiana) and P. engelmannii × glauca (=P.a. ssp. ogilviei) circumscriptions based on naming priority. Global change in the climate is affecting tree/forest growth. There have been many studies that analyzed climate effects on tree growth. Results presented in these studies showed that the climate had both positive and negative effects on tree growth. The nature (positive/negative) and magnitude of the effects and the climate variables affecting growth depended on tree species. Climate-sensitive diameter growth models are not available for white pine (Pinus strobus L.) and white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) plantations. These models are needed to project forest growth and yield and develop forest management plans. Therefore, diameter growth models were developed for white pine and white spruce plantations by incorporating climate variables. Four hundred white pine and white spruce trees (200 per species) were sampled from 80 (40 per species) even-aged monospecific plantations (five trees per plantation) across Ontario, Canada. Diameter–age pairs were obtained from these trees using stem analysis. A nonlinear mixed-effects modeling approach was used to develop diameter growth models. To make the models climate sensitive, model parameters were expressed in term of climate variables. Inclusion of climate variables significantly improved model fit statistics and predictive accuracy. For evaluation, diameters (inside bark) at breast height were estimated for three geographic locations (east, west, and south) across Ontario for an 80-year growth period (2021–2100) under three climate change (emissions) scenarios (representative concentration pathway or RCP 2.6, 4.5, and 8.5 watts m−2). For both species, the overall climate effects were negative. For white spruce, the maximum pronounced difference in projected diameters after the 80-year growth period was in the west. At this location, compared to the no climate change scenario, projected spruce diameters under RCPs 2.6 and 8.5 were thinner by 4.64 (15.99%) and 3.72 (12.80%) cm, respectively. For white pine, the maximum difference was in the south. Compared to the no climate change scenario, projected pine diameters at age 80 under RCPs 2.6 and 8.5 at this location were narrower by 4.54 (13.99%) and 7.60 (23.43%) cm, respectively. For both species, climate effects on diameter growth were less evident at other locations. The non-destructive testing of wood fibre properties is crucial for informing forest management decisions and achieving optimal resource utilization. Moisture content (MC) is an important indicator of wood freshness and may reveal the presence of wood degradation. However, efficient methods are still needed to better monitor this property along the forest–wood value chain. The objective of the study was to develop prediction models to evaluate log MC based on the propagation of ground penetrating radar (GPR) signals. A total of 165 trees representing four species (black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.), white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss), red spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.), and balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.)) were harvested in two regions of the province of Quebec. GPR signals were acquired in the green (fresh) state and at three subsequent drying stages. Partial least squares regression (PLSR) and locally weighted PLSR (LWPLSR) were employed to establish relationships between GPR signals (antenna frequency: 1.6 GHz) and log properties. The models were fitted on three calibration sets containing four drying stages and different species mixes. The LWPLSR models performed better than the PLSR models for predicting log MC, with a lower root mean square error (RMSEp range: 10.8%–20.2% vs. 13.0%–20.5%) and a higher R2p (0.63–0.87 vs. 0.62–0.82). Spruce-only models performed considerably better than fir-only models while multi-species models were in-between. Despite the complex anisotropy of wood and the physics of wave propagation, the GPR technology can be successfully used to estimate log moisture content, but the GPR-based MC models should be calibrated for each specific type of wood material. The European spruce bark beetle Ips typographus and the North American spruce beetle Dendroctonus rufipennis cause high mortality of spruces on their native continents. Both species have been inadvertently transported beyond their native ranges. With similar climates and the presence of congeneric spruce hosts in Europe and North America, there is a risk that one or both bark beetle species become established into the non-native continent. There are many challenges that an introduced population of bark beetles would face, but an important prerequisite for establishment is the presence of suitable host trees. We tested the suitability of non-native versus native hosts by exposing cut bolts of Norway spruce (Picea abies), black spruce (Picea mariana) and white spruce (Picea glauca) to beetle attacks in the field in Norway and Canada. We quantified attack density, brood density and reproductive success of I. typographus and D. rufipennis in the three host species. We found that I. typographus attacked white and black spruce at comparable densities to its native host, Norway spruce, and with similar reproductive success in all three host species. In contrast, D. rufipennis strongly preferred to attack white spruce (a native host) but performed better in the novel Norway spruce host than it did in black spruce, a suboptimal native host. Our results suggest that I. typographus will find abundant and highly suitable hosts in North America, while D. rufipennis in Europe may experience reduced reproductive success in Norway spruce. Rapid establishment of closed canopy cover is a key goal in land reclamation. While re-establishment of understory vegetation is likely to positively contribute to this goal, native herbaceous species are not typically planted on reclaimed sites though it is an alternative to reliance on natural regeneration. The objective of the present study was to test the principle of hitchhiker production of a tree species with native herbaceous species on recently reclaimed industrial sites with the aim of (1) understanding growth tradeoffs when mixing these species in the same container and (2) if hitchhiking had negative growth and survival outcomes for white spruce (Picea glauca) seedlings compared with singly grown white spruce seedlings. White spruce seeds were sown in nursery containers of contrasting cavity sizes, followed by sowing a forb species (Eurybia conspicua or Chamerion angustifolium) at different time intervals or grown singly. Larger cavities and earlier sow dates were associated with higher persistence and growth of the forbs, while later sow dates were associated with larger white spruce seedlings. We observed no evidence to suggest that hitchhiked seedlings were at a competitive disadvantage in terms of growth or survival compared with singly grown seedlings that were initially similar in size. The utilization of genotyping has gained significant popularity in tree improvement programs, aiding in enhancing the precision of breeding values, removing pedigree errors, the assessment of genetic diversity, and evaluating pollen contamination. Our study explores the impact of utilizing 5308 SNP markers to genotype seed orchard parents (166), progeny in progeny trials (667), and seedlot orchard seedlings (780), to simultaneously enhance variance components, breeding values, genetic diversity estimates, and pollen flow in the Region I white spruce (Picea glauca) breeding program in central Alberta (Canada). We compared different individual tree mixed models, including pedigree-based (ABLUP), genomic-based (GBLUP), and single-step pedigree-genomic-based (ssGBLUP) models, to estimate variance components and predict breeding values for the height and diameter at breast height traits. The highest heritability estimates were achieved using the ssGBLUP approach, resulting in improved breeding value accuracy compared to the ABLUP and GBLUP models for the studied growth traits. In the six orchard seedlots tested, the genetic diversity of the seedlings remained stable, characterized by an average of approximately 2.00 alleles per SNP, a Shannon Index of approximately 0.44, and an expected and observed heterozygosity of approximately 0.29. The pedigree reconstruction of seed orchard seedlings successfully identified consistent parental contributions and equal genotype contributions in different years. Pollen contamination levels varied between 11% and 70% using SNP markers and 8% to 81% using pollen traps, with traps both over- and under-estimating contamination. Overall, integrating genomic information from parents and offspring empowers forest geneticists and breeders in the Region I white spruce breeding program to correct errors, conduct backward and forward selections with greater precision, gain a deeper understanding of the orchard's genetic structure, select superior seedlots, and accurately estimate the genetic worth of each orchard lot, which can ultimately result in increased and more precise estimates of genetic gain in the studied growth traits. As forest managers increasingly seek to implement partial-harvest silviculture systems in complex forests, more data are required on the potential development of the residual stand following treatment. In this study, we present 25-year data from a long-term silvicultural study of tree- and stand-level responses to differing levels of basal area following partial harvest in a complex spruce–fir forest in central British Columbia, Canada. Reducing stand basal area elicited stronger basal area increment response in fir than spruce; however, spruce productivity was overall higher than fir across all treatments. Smaller trees increased their size proportionally more than larger trees, and thinning resulted in increased recruitment of smaller trees into larger diameter classes. At the stand-level, basal area reductions to well below 20 m2/ha resulted in higher volume and basal area growth over the length of this study, and suggest that optimum stand-level growth may be achieved at lower basal areas than suggested in prior literature. We also found a positive relationship between stand-level residual basal area and mortality. In central British Columbia, stand structure, species composition, and growth rates in complex spruce–fir forests can be maintained through partial-harvest silviculture treatments. Forest plantations play an important role in maintaining a supply of high-quality timber from managed forest. With an expected increase in the prevalence of drought in some forested areas, climate change increases concerns about future seedling growth. A promising approach to promote the suitability of plantation seedlings to current and future climate would be to use variation in growth and wood traits of trees under drought as selection criteria in tree breeding programs, especially at a young stage when they are most vulnerable to drought. We evaluated the genetic control of the growth and wood density response of white spruce clonal seedlings submitted to various drought conditions in a greenhouse experiment. By varying the watering treatment of 600 two year-old seedlings from 25 clones, we simulated three levels of drought-induced stress during two growing seasons. Apical and radial growth decreased markedly as the intensity of drought increased, whereas wood density tended to increase. We also developed a woody biomass index composed of wood density and ring area, which was observed to decrease slightly with increasing drought. There was important variation in all traits among clones and heritability tended to decrease with the intensity and duration of drought-induced stress, mainly for wood density and radial growth. However, the heritability of apical growth tended to increase under drought conditions. Our results show that the response of young white spruce clones to drought is highly variable, and together with the significant levels of heritability noted, the results indicate that multi-trait genetic selection for drought stress response at a young age could represent a promising approach to increase resilience to drought. In managed boreal forests, both plantations and natural regeneration are used to re-establish a cohort of conifer trees following harvest or disturbance. Young trees in open plantations generally grow more rapidly than under forest canopies, but more rapid growth could be compromised by greater insect damage. We compared insect damage on white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss, Pinaceae) growing in plantations with naturally regenerated trees under mature forest canopies in boreal forests (Québec, Canada). We selected ten sites in the naturally regenerated forest and in small, multispecies plantations and sampled ten young trees of 2.5–3 m (per site) in late summer 2020 and again in early and late summer 2021. We compared overall rates of herbivory, galls (adelgids), damage by the spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana, Clemens), and defoliation from sawflies. Overall, insect herbivory damage remained at similarly low levels in both habitats; an average of 9.3% of expanding shoots were damaged on forest trees and 7.7% in plantation trees. Spruce budworm damage increased from 2020 to 2021 and remained higher in under-canopy trees, but damage rates were negligible at this early stage of the outbreak (1.5% in forest vs. 0.78% of buds damaged on plantation trees). While damage due to galls was higher in plantations, the overall low level of damage likely does not pose a significant impact on the growth or mortality of young trees.

Boreal mixed forests of trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides) and white spruce (Picea glauca) can provide higher outputs of many ecosystem goods and services, combined with resilience for changing environmental conditions. In this study, we examine the growth of white spruce and aspen over a range of stand compositions created by spot and broadcast treatments of broadleaves using manual and chemical means, aspen spacing, and untreated control. Twenty-two growing seasons postharvest, treatment responses created a range of broadleaf densities and spatial arrangements, reflected in significant differences in heights and diameters of the spruce mixedwood component. At this early seral stage, treatments have generated diversity in both tree species composition and stand structure. Modeling of the stand structures created by the different treatments provided outcomes ranging from pure conifer to broadleaf dominated when assessed by merchantable volumes. Broadleaf manipulations changed the relative proportion of spruce and broadleaf species in a mixture, achieving a variety of potential landscape and stand-level goals. Treatment differences were often not statistically significant until at least 16 years after stand initiation. Monitoring the achievement of mixedwood management goals will require longer time periods than currently employed for broadleaf or conifer monocultures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Oil sands mining in northeastern Alberta, Canada, generates tailings containing sand, silt, clay, water, and residual bitumen with hydrocarbons. The impact of tailings on revegetation is a major environmental concern and poses a significant land reclamation challenge. Oil sands companies have recently developed technologies that use thickeners in combination with carbon dioxide to produce non‐segregating tailings (NST), to accelerate the consolidation of tailings while sequestering greenhouse gases. Effects of these tailings on plant re‐establishment have yet to be determined. We investigated the impact of NST on biomass and physiology of 20 boreal woody plant species grown in environmentally controlled growth rooms. The seedlings were grown for 8 weeks in NST capped with boreal forest topsoil or peat‐mineral soil mix or petroleum coke in 50‐cm‐long polyvinyl chloride pipes. We found that the biomass of balsam fir, beaked hazelnut, blueberry, green alder, Labrador tea, lowbush cranberry, paper birch, and raspberry was severely reduced by NST, while the effects on balsam poplar, Bebb's willow, chokecherry, dogwood, saskatoon, and white spruce were relatively weak. This was also the case for jack pine, which showed poor survival in NST. The negative impact of NST on plants can be largely explained by elevated sodium and decreased foliar nutrient concentrations. The impact of NST capping with petroleum coke on plant growth was non‐significant. Differences among species in their survival and biomass responses to NST appeared to be partly a reflection of their natural habitats. Herbivores shape vegetative communities via numerous mechanisms, including browse. We used vegetation monitoring data from Isle Royale National Park to examine woody species change across a nine‐year interval, coinciding with herbivore escalation. Here, moose and snowshoe hare are the dominant herbivores, while the gray wolf is the apex predator. Our initial sampling period (2010) followed six years of low moose abundance, while our second sampling event (2019) followed a nine‐year escalation in moose density. We tested for change in both saplings and shrubs and compared diameter size distributions of common tree species in three island sections. We found a decline in large saplings of sugar maple, a species limited to the west section of the island. We also saw declines in small saplings of sugar maple, paper birch, and trembling aspen. For some species, including black spruce and white spruce, taxa that are unpalatable to moose, diameter distributions were proportionally larger (i.e., indicative of fewer small individuals) in 2019 than in 2010. In contrast, diameter distributions of black ash in the central section and trembling aspen in the central and east sections of the island were proportionally smaller (indicative of more small individuals) in 2019 than in 2010. We found that ~50% of common shrub taxa were more abundant during the second sampling event, while none declined. Our work here brings to light several unanticipated results. While we demonstrated partial recovery of trembling aspen, likely originating during the earlier period of low moose abundance, our results suggest further changes may be attributable to other island herbivores. The response of black ash, a hydric species, may be stemming from a sixfold increase in active beaver sites, while that of spruce may be attributable to a historic spike in snowshoe hare density. We currently have only a limited understanding of the impacts of the island's lesser studied herbivores on overstory regeneration. With the wide availability of remotely sensed data from various sensors, fusion-based tree species classification approaches have emerged as a prominent and ongoing research topic. However, most recent studies primarily focused on combining multisource data at the feature level, while few systematically examined their positive or negative contributions to tree species classification. This study aimed to investigate fusion approaches at the feature and decision levels deployed with support vector machine and random forest algorithms to classify five dominant tree species: Norway maple, honey locust, Austrian pine, white spruce, and blue spruce in individual crowns. Spectral, textural, and structural features derived from multispectral imagery (MSI), a very high-resolution panchromatic image (PAN), and LiDAR data were systematically exploited to assess their contributions to accurate classifications. Among the various classification schemes that were explored, both feature- and decision-level fusion approaches demonstrated significant improvements in tree species classification compared with the utilization of MSI (0.7), PAN (0.74), or LiDAR (0.8) in isolation. Notably, the decision-level fusion approach achieved the highest overall accuracies (0.86 for SVM and 0.84 for RF) and kappa coefficients (0.82 for SVM and 0.79 for RF). Forest protection against eastern spruce budworm, Choristoneura fumiferana (Clemens), relies on aerial applications of Bacillus thuringiensis (Btk). However, Btk prescriptions have been developed for balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) stands, generating uncertainty as to the relevance of this protection approach on white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss). The main goal of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of three Btk application treatments (early application, late application, and double application) for protecting white spruce and balsam fir in mixed stands. Our results show that all Btk treatments tested kept defoliation under the 50% threshold on balsam fir (27.7 to 38.1% less defoliation than in controls). In contrast, differences in defoliation among treatments were not significant for white spruce. Larval mortality was significantly lower on white spruce than on balsam fir. The low efficacy of Btk treatments on white spruce may be explained by its shoot phenology (most bud caps were still present during the early application), and its foliar chemistry, which could decrease Btk efficacy. Consequently, many larvae may survive simply because Btk spores do not reach them, or because they may consume sublethal doses. We recommend maintaining the current strategy in mixed stands, as it provides a good protection for balsam fir. Despite widespread observations of climate‐change induced treeline migration and shrubification, there remains few direct measurements of transpiration and dynamics of evaporative partitioning in northern climates. Here, we present eddy covariance and sap flow data at a low elevation boreal white spruce forest and a mid‐elevation shrub taiga comprised of tall willow (Salix spp.) and birch (Betula spp.) in a subarctic, alpine catchment in Yukon Territory, Canada over two hydrologically distinct years. Specific research questions addressed were: (1) How do contributions of T to ET vary between sites and years? and (2) What are the primary meteorological, phenological, and soil moisture controls and limits on ET and T across vegetation covers? In the mid‐growing season, mean T rates were greater at the dense shrub site (2.0 ± 0.75 mm d−1) than the forest (1.47 ± 0.52 mm d−1). During this time, T:ET was lower at the forest (0.48) than at the tall, dense shrub site (0.80). Of the 2 years, 2020 was considerably wetter and cooler than 2019 during the growing season. At the shrub site, during the mid‐growing season (July 1‐Aug 15), T dropped considerably in 2020 (−26%), as T was suppressed during the short, wet growing season. In contrast, T at the forest was only moderately suppressed (−3%) between years in this same period. Evapotranspiration was more strongly controlled by air temperature during the early and late season at the forest, while ET at the shrub site was more sensitive to warmer temperatures in the mid‐growing season. Distinct differences in sap flux densities, sensitivities to environmental drivers, and stomatal resistances existed between shrub species. Results suggest that warming temperatures, increases in growing season length, and increased rainfall will cause differences in evaporative response and partitioning over complex, heterogenous alpine watersheds. A significant portion of the harvested land base in western Canada is becoming old enough or entering a phase where thinning is a legitimate forest management option. A comprehensive review of the existing knowledge of commercial thinning (CT) treatments applied to pine and spruce-dominated stands in Alberta was conducted, with particular regard to the intensity, timing of interventions, method, and impacts on crop tree growth responses. Although the geographical focus of this review is Alberta, information on this topic is more complete in other areas of North America and Europe, where there is a long history of density management. In areas of eastern North America, our review revealed that CT from below, with tree removal levels from 27 to 43% of the basal area, could increase total merchantable wood produced from 11 to 60 m3 ha−1 over a rotation, depending on stand age and intensity of thinning. For Alberta conditions, and considering the risks, we conclude that commercial thinning basal area removal should be in the range of 25 to 40%, depending on a variety of factors such as species, wind firmness, and insect or disease incidence and risk. Thinning too aggressively and/or too late will increase the blowdown risk but the literature is fairly consistent in suggesting that live crown ratios should be >40% to maximize the chance of growth response and minimize the blowdown risk. In cases where stands are also threatened by stressors such as drought, wind, and insect or disease outbreaks, CT treatments likely offer the potential at limiting the overall risk, but localized knowledge and experience are critical. It is intended that the information presented may support ongoing and future research trials and growth and yield (G&Y) model development about potential CT treatments to apply and the likely results of practical application to commercial forestry. Data collected over a 30-year period from an experiment replicated across 21 locations in western Canada are used to explore the effects of precommercial thinning of trembling aspen to a range of densities in combination with three initial white spruce densities on tree growth and stand dynamics. Increasing differentiation amongst the 15 treatments was observed with age after thinning for both spruce and aspen responses. Spruce height and diameter declined with increasing aspen density. At age 10 spruce diameter with no aspen was 1.5× that of spruce in unthinned while it was 2.6× that of spruce in unthinned at age 28. Following thinning aspen DBH and crown width declined with increasing density of retained aspen while slenderness and height to crown base of aspen increased. Thinning to 1500 aspen·ha−1 resulted in aspen DBH that was 22% larger relative to the unthinned at age 28. Spruce volume and stemwood biomass at age 90, estimated using the Mixedwood Growth Model (MGM21), declined with increasing initial aspen density, with the complete removal of aspen resulting in nearly double the spruce volume of unthinned plots. However, total stand volume, total stand biomass, and stemwood carbon at age 90 are predicted to be largest in mixed stands with aspen densities of 1500 stems·ha−1 or higher.

We investigated the genetic makeup of Lutz spruce, a natural hybrid between white and Sitka spruce on the Kenai Peninsula, Alaska. Microsatellites indicate 72% of individuals sampled had predominantly white spruce ancestry, whereas 14% had predominantly Sitka spruce ancestry; some individuals classified as white spruce had Sitka spruce plastid genotypes. As Picea mitochondria are maternally inherited and plastids are paternally inherited, it appears that white spruce was the ancestral seed parent of nearly all spruce on the western peninsula, whereas Sitka spruce alleles originated from pollen. Pollen records show that white spruce colonized the western peninsula ∼8500 YBP from glacial refugium, whereas Sitka spruce arrived on the eastern peninsula ∼4000 YBP after migrating up the Pacific coast. Our data suggest that Sitka spruce colonization west of the Kenai Mountains may have occurred not via seed dispersal but by long distance transport of wind-borne pollen and subsequent hybridization with established white spruce populations. Hybridization was an important mechanism that allowed Sitka spruce to expand the leading edge of its range in response to historical climate change. As the climate continues to warm, climate envelope modeling suggests Lutz spruce may ultimately displace white spruce on the western peninsula even as Sitka spruce is constrained to the eastern peninsula where it will continue to hybridize. The mountain pine beetle, Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), recently underwent a notable range-expansion event in western Canada, resulting in access to the novel host jack pine, Pinus banksiana Lamb. We assessed the suitability of jack pine for mountain pine beetle, as well as the historic host lodgepole pine, Pinus contorta Dougl. var. latifolia Engelm., and the non-Pinus host white spruce, Picea glauca (Moench) Voss, to help inform an assessment of the risk of future spread into Canada's boreal forest and to further our understanding of host use in bark beetles. Several performance traits we measured were similar between lodgepole pine and jack pine, but gallery length and productivity indicated that lodgepole pine was the more suitable host. Development appeared to be faster in jack pine; however, in contrast to previous studies, we attribute it to oviposition arresting earlier in the novel host compared to the other hosts and not a difference in development rate. Initial productivity was surprisingly high in spruce, but we found evidence of a delayed negative effect that manifested as reduced cold tolerance, delayed development, and high mortality of late-instar larvae. Although jack pine is a suitable host for the mountain pine beetle, our results indicate that the beetle's eruptive potential could be lower in jack pine compared to lodgepole pine, given all other factors are equal. Other factors that may also affect mountain pine beetle population dynamics require additional research and include the composition and structure of jack pine forests, environmental conditions, and biotic interactions. Tree improvement programs select genotypes for faster growth, at both early and late stages, to increase yields over unimproved material, and the improvement is frequently attributed to genetic control in growth parameters among genotypes. Underutilized genetic variability among genotypes also has the potential to ensure future gains are possible. However, the genetic variation in growth, physiology and hormone control among genotypes generated from different breeding strategies has not been well characterized in conifers. We assessed growth, biomass, gas exchange, gene expression and hormone levels in white spruce seedlings obtained from three different breeding strategies (controlled crosses, polymix pollination, open pollination) using parents grafted into a clonal seed orchard in Alberta, Canada. A pedigree-based best linear unbiased prediction (ABLUP) mixed model was implemented to quantify variability and narrow-sense heritability for target traits. The levels of several hormones and expression of gibberellinrelated genes in apical internodes were also determined. Over the first two years of development, the estimated heritabilities for height, volume, total dry biomass, above ground dry biomass, root:shoot ratio and root length, varied between 0.10 and 0.21, with height having the highest value. The ABLUP values showed large genetic variability in growth and physiology traits both between families from different breeding strategies, and within families. The principal component analysis showed that developmental and hormonal traits explained 44.2% and 29.4% of the total phenotypic variation between the three different breeding strategies and two growth groups. In general, controlled crosses from the fast growth group showed the best apical growth, with more accumulation of indole-3-acetic acid, abscisic acid, phaseic acid, and a 4-fold greater gene expression of PgGA3ox1 in genotypes from controlled crosses versus those from open pollination. However, in some cases, open pollination from the fast and slow growth groups showed the best root development, higher water use efficiency (iWUE and d13C) and more accumulation of zeatin and isopentenyladenosine. Inconclusion, tree domestication can lead to trade-offs between growth, carbon allocation, photosynthesis, hormone levels and gene expression, and we encourage the use of this phenotypic variation identified in improved and unimproved trees to advance white spruce tree improvement programs. Herbivores affect plants via direct consumption, but also indirectly via changes in the vegetation. These indirect effects may only manifest after decades of exposure and, as a result, their impact is rarely accounted for. To better understand the direct and indirect impacts of a large herbivore, moose (Alces alces), on forests, we measured tree growth in areas that were both subjected to and excluded from herbivory for over 80 years. Growth data were gathered from five tree species, ranging from low to high palatability. We found that at small sizes, Betula papyrifera, a preferred species, benefited from herbivore exclusion. However, larger individuals grew more when exposed to herbivory, a response we attribute to lower competition in heavily browsed conditions. Populus tremuloides, a highly preferred tree, did not show any differences between levels of herbivory. Abies balsamea, a preferred winter browsed, was only marginally affected by browsing at smaller sizes. The two non-preferred species, Picea glauca and Picea mariana, did not show differential growth between herbivory levels. We conclude that herbivores can impact forests through both direct and indirect effects, that these effects are size specific, and that effects vary among species in ways not always predicted by consumption patterns. Purpose: Most plants interact with soil biota that positively or negatively affect seedling performance. These plant-soil feedbacks (PSFs) can strongly affect recruitment, potentially for years after death. We tested whether PSFs persisted following death for Populus tremuloides Michx. (aspen) and if these effects were environment dependent using soils collected from live and dead aspen and heterospecific Picea glauca (Moench) Voss in 24 stands across two ecosystems. Methods: We conducted a greenhouse experiment using soils from 24 aspen stands. At each stand, we collected soil from three trees of each tree type and used live and sterilized versions of these soils to inoculate aspen seedlings. We then recorded mortality and growth of the seedlings over three months. Results: Live inocula reduced aspen survival and growth relative to sterilized inocula, suggesting that pathogens drive PSF. Plant responses to live and dead aspen inocula were correlated across environments; however, responses to aspen and heterospecific Picea inocula were uncorrelated, suggesting that specialized pathogens may drive PSF. Conclusions: Pathogen-driven negative PSFs can persist for multiple years irrespective of the environment, potentially limiting the regeneration of aspen stands following dieback. The relative proportions of different chemical components in wood tissues is one of the underlying factors that control wood properties. These proportions vary within and between woody tissues, and an accurate description of these variations is critical for parameterizing forest biogeochemical budgets and models. White spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) spacing intensities trials in the Petawawa Research Forest, Ontario, Canada, were sampled to evaluate variations in carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and hydrogen (H) concentrations between different tissue types, i.e., bark, cambium, knots, earlywood, latewood, and wood. Samples were freeze-dried and oven-dried to test the impact of the drying methods on these chemical elements. Freeze-dried C (51.14) and H (6.18) concentrations were significantly higher than those of oven-dried C (50.55) and H (6.06). Freeze-dried N (0.18) did not differ from oven-dried N (0.17). The spacing intensities impacted C, H, and N, with C content being higher in wider square spacings (4.3 m and 6.1 m), while the reverse was true for N and H, which exhibited higher content in smaller square spacings (1.2 m and 1.8 m). The results of this study also suggested that when it comes to the content of chemical elements, bark and knots should be treated as separate fuel types, whereas other woody tissues can be aggregated. Much is still unknown about the growth and physiological responses of trees to global change at the northern treeline. We combined tree‐ring width data with century‐long stable carbon and oxygen isotope records to investigate growth and physiological responses of white spruce at two treeline sites in the Canadian Arctic to concurrent increases in temperature, atmospheric CO2 concentration (ca), and decline in sea ice extent over the past century. The tree‐ring records were assessed during three periods with contrasting climatic conditions: (a) the early 20th century warming, (b) the 1940–1970 cooling period, and (c) the anthropogenic late 20th century warming period. We found opposing growth trends between the two sites, but similar carbon isotope discrimination (Δ13C) and intrinsic water‐use efficiency (iWUE) trajectories. While tree growth (defined as basal area increment) increased at the site nearer to the Arctic Ocean during the 20th century following the rise in temperature and sea ice loss, growth declined after 1950 at the more interior site. At both sites, Δ13C slightly increased over these periods. However, trees showed a nonlinear response to increased ca, shifting after 1970 from a passive stomatal response (i.e., no changes in iWUE) to an active response (i.e., a moderate ∼12% increase in iWUE). Further, our isotope‐based findings do not support the idea that temperature‐induced drought stress caused the divergent growth trends at our treeline sites. This study thus highlights nonlinear and complex physiological and growth adjustments to concomitant changes in temperature, sea ice extent, and ca over the last century at the northern treeline. Plain Language Summary: In the last decades, Arctic ecosystems have experienced unprecedented warmer temperatures, higher atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations, and a decline in sea ice extent. However, it is still unknown how these changes in environmental factors have impacted tree populations at their northern distribution limits. Here, we examine how the growth and water‐use efficiency of white spruce trees have changed over the last century in response to warmer temperatures, higher carbon dioxide concentrations, and sea ice decline at two treeline sites in the Canadian Arctic. We found that tree growth increased at the site nearer to the Arctic Ocean during the 20th century following the rise in temperature and sea ice loss, while growth declined after 1950 at the more interior site. At both sites, the water‐use efficiency of trees was stable until 1970. Following the rapid temperature and carbon dioxide increase since the 1970s, trees have become more efficient in using water. The contrasting growth trends found at our study sites highlight complex growth and physiological adjustments of white spruce trees to rapid and simultaneous changes in temperature, sea ice extent, and carbon dioxide concentrations in the Arctic. Introduction: Genomic selection is becoming a standard technique in plant breeding and is now being introduced into forest tree breeding. Despite promising results to predict the genetic merit of superior material based on their additive breeding values, many studies and operational programs still neglect non-additive effects and their potential for enhancing genetic gains. Methods: Using two large comprehensive datasets totaling 4,066 trees from 146 full-sib families of white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss), we evaluated the effect of the inclusion of dominance on the precision of genetic parameter estimates and on the accuracy of conventional pedigree-based (ABLUP-AD) and genomic-based (GBLUP-AD) models. Results: While wood quality traits were mostly additively inherited, considerable non-additive effects and lower heritabilities were detected for growth traits. For growth, GBLUP-AD better partitioned the additive and dominance effects into roughly equal variances, while ABLUP-AD strongly overestimated dominance. The predictive abilities of breeding and total genetic value estimates were similar between ABLUP-AD and GBLUP-AD when predicting individuals from the same families as those included in the training dataset. However, GBLUP-AD outperformed ABLUP-AD when predicting for new unphenotyped families that were not represented in the training dataset, with, on average, 22% and 53% higher predictive ability of breeding and genetic values, respectively. Resampling simulations showed that GBLUP-AD required smaller sample sizes than ABLUP-AD to produce precise estimates of genetic variances and accurate predictions of genetic values. Still, regardless of the method used, large training datasets were needed to estimate additive and non-additive genetic variances precisely. Discussion: This study highlights the different quantitative genetic architectures between growth and wood traits. Furthermore, the usefulness of genomic additive-dominance models for predicting new families should allow practicing mating allocation to maximize the total genetic values for the propagation of elite material. Aim: Altitudinal and latitudinal treeline ecotones have not consistently responded to climate warming in the direction and/or magnitude predicted by climate alone, suggesting that non‐climatic mechanisms (e.g. biotic interactions) also mediate treeline range dynamics. Through a collaborative research approach, we assessed environmental conditions associated with pre‐dispersal insect cone granivory and how this biotic interaction may govern the reproductive potential, and therefore range dynamics, of spruce‐dominated treelines across northern Canada. Location: In all, 10 boreal forest treelines, tundra and alpine, from Yukon to Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Taxa: White spruce (Picea glauca [Moench] Voss), Black spruce (Picea mariana [Mill.] B.S.P.), Strobilomyia spp., Megastigmus spp. Methods: Treeline sites were assessed for presence and magnitude of pre‐dispersal seed granivory by insects along with viable seed availability. We quantified stand density metrics, organic layer depth and understorey vegetation composition at each location and, subsequently, incorporated those variables into generalized linear mixed models to establish predictors of granivory magnitude and viability of available seed. Results: Insect granivory was widespread across sites; however, site‐specific patterns of granivory were associated with increased moss cover and decreased shrub cover and stand density. While all black spruce‐dominated sites exhibited seed viability rates > 50%, the number of seeds produced per cone varied, suggesting that within‐site abiotic conditions and biotic interaction pressures limit successful colonization of novel environments in advance of seed dispersal. Main Conclusions: The modelled relationships between granivory, seed viability and environmental conditions represent an essential step towards generalizing how and when biotic interactions across subarctic treelines influence boreal tree range dynamics before seed dispersal. Connections between granivory magnitude and site‐level treeline characteristics (e.g. stand density, understorey vegetation) will provide a more comprehensive understanding of treeline range dynamics under continued climate change. To extend service life in exterior cladding applications, wood must be treated and/or coated. White spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) is a common wood species used in Canada for exterior cladding applications. White spruce is a refractory species and can be hard to treat with conventional approaches. Organosilanes could be an interesting wood treatment as condensation between organosilanes and wood hydroxyls can occur leading to a decrease in hydroxyl content, which are responsible for the dimensional instability of the wood. White spruce was pressure-treated with different formulations of organosilanes using acid and basic catalysts as well as hydrolysed and non-hydrolysed organosilanes. Weight percent gains were quite low (up to 11%) due to white spruce anatomy, and also because the organosilanes were located only in the cell wall. White spruce treated with organosilanes showed the best anti-swelling efficacy (up to 30%) for a non-hydrolysed formulation using an acid catalyst and the smallest organosilane molecule. The basic catalyst did not improve the anti-swelling efficacy compared to the acid catalyst because of its low mass gain. Three types of commercial coatings were applied on the treated wood and untreated control. The coated samples were submitted to accelerated UV exposure for 1,500 h to evaluate colour change and adhesion. The opaque stain exhibited the smallest total colour change (ΔEab*) with or without the modification of organosilanes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Plants require metals such as copper to survive, but an excess of metals can have phytotoxic effects. The objectives of this study were to (1) analyze the expression of genes associated with copper resistance (RAN1 and MRP4) and (2) assess the effects of copper and potassium ions on global DNA methylation in white spruce (P. glauca). Seedlings were treated with three concentrations of copper sulfate including 1312 mg/kg, 656 mg/kg, and 130 mg/kg. Potassium sulfate and water were used as controls. DNA and RNA were extracted from roots and needles. The levels of gene expression were measured using RT-qPCR and the global 5-methyl cytosine was assessed using the Abcam ELISA kit procedure. Overall, the highest concentration of copper (1312 mg/kg) induced the most severe damages to plants compared to the 656 mg/kg and 130 mg/kg treatments. Copper at the 1312 mg/kg concentration induced an upregulation of the MRP4 gene in roots and needles. The 656 mg/kg and 130 mg /kg of copper induced no significant difference in MRP4 expression compared to the controls. An upregulation of the RAN1 gene was observed only in roots treated with the 1312 mg/kg. This suggests that the amounts of bioavailable copper in mining sites in Northern Ontario cannot induce changes in MRP4 and RAN1 expressions. Differential expressions of RAN1 and MRP4 genes were observed in roots of copper-resistant and copper-susceptible genotypes. An increase of MRP4 gene expression also observed in the resistant and susceptible genotypes compared to the water control. Copper did not induce changes in the level of global cytosine methylation. However, the potassium ions used as control induced a hypomethylation of DNA at the 1312 mg/kg concentration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Light availability drives vertical canopy gradients in photosynthetic functioning and carbon (C) balance, yet patterns of variability in these gradients remain unclear. We measured light availability, photosynthetic CO2 and light response curves, foliar C, nitrogen (N) and pigment concentrations, and the photochemical reflectance index (PRI) on upper and lower canopy needles of white spruce trees (Picea glauca) at the species' northern and southern range extremes. We combined our photosynthetic data with previously published respiratory data to compare and contrast canopy C balance between latitudinal extremes. We found steep canopy gradients in irradiance, photosynthesis and leaf traits at the southern range limit, but a lack of variation across canopy positions at the northern range limit. Thus, unlike many tree species from tropical to mid‐latitude forests, high latitude trees may not require vertical gradients of metabolic activity to optimize photosynthetic C gain. Consequently, accounting for self‐shading is less critical for predicting gross primary productivity at northern relative to southern latitudes. Northern trees also had a significantly smaller net positive leaf C balance than southern trees suggesting that, regardless of canopy position, low photosynthetic rates coupled with high respiratory costs may ultimately constrain the northern range limit of this widely distributed boreal species. Territories are typically defined as spatially exclusive areas that are defended against conspecifics. Given the spatial nature of territoriality, it is inherently density dependent, but the economics of territoriality also depend on the distribution and abundance of defended resources. Our objectives were to assess the effects of changing population density and food availability on individually based territorial phenotypes.We developed a novel analytical framework that bridges spatially explicit territories with social network analysis to model density‐dependent territorial phenotypes. Using the outputs from our data pipeline, we modelled plasticity in territory size and territory intrusion rates in a long‐term study population of North American red squirrels Tamiasciurus hudsonicus. Red squirrels defend year‐round territories around a central hoard (midden) of white spruce Picea glauca cones. Importantly, white spruce is a masting species that produces large cone crops every 4–7 years (i.e. mast years) in our study area interspersed with non‐mast years when few cones are produced. In the spring following mast years, populations are approximately double in size, but are lower in the spring of non‐mast years.We predicted that territory size and intrusion rates would decrease as resource abundance, and consequently population density, increased. By contrast, as resource abundance decreased via depletion, and therefore density decreased, territories should increase in size and intrusions should also increase.As we expected, individual territory size and territorial intrusions were negatively density dependent, such that increased density after mast years resulted in smaller territories and fewer intrusions. When considering between‐individual variation in plasticity across a density gradient, individuals responded differently to changes in population density within their lifetime.Our results show that territory size and intrusion rates display negative density dependence. When food becomes available in the autumn of a mast year and density in spring of the following year increases, territories shrink in size to effectively a small area around the midden. While our findings for red squirrels are unique compared to other systems, they serve as a reminder that the direction and strength of fundamental ecological relationships can depend on the nature of the system. Climate change is predicted to increase forest fires in boreal forests, which can threaten the sustainability of forest genetic resources. Wildfires can potentially impact genetic diversity and population structure in forest trees by creating population bottlenecks, and influencing demography, effective population size (Ne) and various evolutionary processes. We have investigated this critical issue in a widely-distributed, transcontinental, ecologically and economically important and fire-intolerant boreal conifer, white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss). We tested the hypothesis that in a predominantly outcrossing species with long distance gene flow, such as white spruce, located in primary undisturbed forests, normal forest fires do not adversely affect genetic diversity and population structure. We used 10 nuclear genic and genomic microsatellite loci to examine genetic diversity and population structure of post-fire pristine old-growth (PF-OG) and adjacent post-fire naturally regenerated young (PF-YR) stands. The genetic diversity, inbreeding and genetic differentiation levels, Bayesian population structure, Ne and latent genetic potential were statistically similar between the PF-OG and PF-YR populations. None of the microsatellites showed any signature of selection. Our study demonstrates that normal wild forest fires do not adversely affect genetic diversity, differentiation, and population genetic structure in white spruce. Assisted gene flow according to expected climate gradients is considered as a forest management strategy to mitigate impacts of environmental change on forest growth. However, the effects of seed translocation on wood properties and lumber quality remain unknown. This study evaluated the effect of provenance origin on lumber production and quality at rotation age in two white spruce provenance trials established in contrasting environments in eastern Canada. Based on 108 sample trees, which resulted in 943 pieces of lumber, average volume production per tree at the southernmost site was twice that of the production at the northern site. Provenance had a significant influence on growth and lumber strength in the first sawlog but had no effect on lumber stiffness and wood density. Although visual grade yields of No. 2 and better were high in both trials (over 86%), the machine stress rated (MSR) grade potential and percentage of lumber that met the bending stiffness design values of the visual grades were generally low (12%–26%). Hence, plantation-grown lumber should preferably be machine stress rated to ensure its fitness for structural applications in buildings. Management strategies aiming to efficiently sequester carbon should primarily maximize volume productivity in northern sites, as moving seed sources north still reduces provenance productivity, while breeding programs should aim to prevent decrease in lumber stiffness due to augmented productivity and shortened rotation cycles. An increase in the frequency and magnitude of drought events threatens the health of forests and the economic, ecological, and societal services they provide. It has been widely demonstrated that trees undergoing a succession of stresses may accumulate lesions that in turn lead to a decrease in their vigor and eventually to death. However, recent studies have shown that a nonlethal stress should also initiate a stress memory, which triggers a faster and stronger plant defensive response when a new stress occurs. Although this mechanism is well understood in many herbaceous plants, a better understanding in trees is needed. The aim of our study was to explore the capacity of two forest tree species to develop a stress memory. A greenhouse experiment was conducted to evaluate the tree seedlings' vigor after one or two consecutive droughts separate from a rehydration period during the same growing season. No stress memory pattern was observed for the two tree species as, on the contrary, we even observed a stress accumulation pattern in sugar maple. It remains possible that some individuals in our study developed stress memory, but that we were not able to detect it. The fine‐tuning of experimental parameters and the conducting of longitudinal studies would be helpful to detect individual capacity in stress memory activation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The demand for exterior wood siding is stagnating in North America due in part to perceptions of low durability and the need for frequent maintenance. One way to address these concerns is to modify the wood to improve its physical properties, while maintaining its appearance. In this study, white spruce was treated with organosilanes and a combination of aluminum treatments followed by a thermal treatment to improve the dimensional stability and the wood durability. Anti-swelling efficiency (ASE), leaching and decay tests were performed on the treated Canadian wood species. The quantity of hydroxyls available after treatment was evaluated by water vapor sorption. The results showed that the treatment improved the dimensional stability up to 50%. Available hydroxyls decreased by as much as 37%. The organosilanes treatment was resistant to leaching, while the aluminum was observed to leach. Organosilanes in combination with aluminum showed brown rot resistance. The addition of aluminum to the organosilanes treatment did not have effect on dimensional stability but it had a great impact on the brown rot resistance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent decades, forest nurseries in eastern Canada have been faced with periods of mild winter weather, delayed snowfall, and low seedling protective snow cover combined with winter rains instead of snowfall. These extreme conditions have resulted in the loss of millions of seedlings, in particular those that overwinter outdoors, probably due to their winter dehardening. The main objective of this study is to simulate different periods of warm weather at the beginning and end of winter and evaluate their effects on the dehardening and growth of Picea mariana and Picea glauca seedlings in response to different freezing temperatures. Three warming treatments were simulated (control, 1 day, and 3 days of warming at 10 °C) followed by three freezing temperatures (−4, −12, and −20 °C). In winter, regardless of the warming treatment, the seedlings of the two species tolerated the different freezing temperatures without any apparent damage. However, at the end of winter and in the absence of snow cover, the seedlings did not show frost tolerance at −20 °C. On the other hand, the seedlings showed normal growth after undergoing frosts at −4 °C and −12 °C, similar to that observed for control seedlings. Different cultural practices and protection strategies are proposed to improve frost tolerance and reduce the winter loss of seedlings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
