Abstract

Abstract In this study, several simplified constitutive models and a damage plasticity model for ultra-high performance fiber reinforced concrete(UHPFRC)material with micro and hooked ends steel fibers, Bekaert Dramix 5D steel fiber, and Forta-Ferro synthetic fiber had been developed. Later, these constitutive and damage plasticity models were applied as analytical model to numerically simulate the concrete members with different fibers, and to evaluate the behavior of the concrete sections. The constitutive models for UHPFRC of three mix designs were obtained experimentally by conducting uniaxial compression and tensile tests on both cylinder and dog-bone specimens. Next, a comparison was made among the three mix designs based on the outcomes retrieved from uniaxial compression and tensile stress–strain. These results were validated by numerically analyzing three hollow circular columns via finite element method. The numerical results revealed that the proposed material model possessed appropriate tensile strain-hardening behavior and uniaxial compression strengths of UHPFRC with different types of fiber. The lateral resistance responses of the tested hollow sections, which were obtained by using developed constitutive and damage plasticity models, displayed exceptional agreement with the experimental outcomes.

Abstract

Although ultra-high performance fiber reinforced concrete (UHPFRC) has been used recently as a sustainable construction technique for many precast segmental bridges (PSBs), no exhaustive numerical and experimental studies exist to assess the shear capacity and failure pattern of the joints in these bridges. Hence, to accurately investigate the shear behavior of the joints in UHPFRC precast segmental bridges, a numerical analysis model based on finite-element code was established in this study. Concrete damaged plasticity model was used to analyze the UHPFRC joint models by considering all the geometries, boundaries, interactions and constraints. In this paper, the numerical model was calibrated by two full-scale UHPFRC keyed dry and epoxy joints under confining pressure effect. The excellent agreement between the numerical results and experimental data demonstrated the reliability of the proposed numerical model. The validated numerical model was then utilized to investigate the parameters affecting shear behaviour of the joints in PSBs. For this purpose, 12 FE models were analyzed under different variable parameters namely, number of shear keys, confining stress, and types of joints (dry or epoxy). Furthermore, the numerical results were also compared with the five existing shear design provision models available in literature in terms of ultimate shear capacity.

Abstract

While the database of tests on shear in reinforced concrete members without stirrups is extensive, the pool of test data for fiber-reinforced specimens is limited. Fewer still are tests undertaken on high-performance fiber-reinforced concrete members with the fiber concrete designed to carry the full shear capacity. This paper reports the results of a testing program on ultrahigh-performance steel fiber-reinforced concrete beams. Eight prestressed concrete beams were tested in shear with the test variables being the shear span-to-depth ratio and the quantity and type of steel fibers. The results of the tests, together with additional tests reported in the literature, are compared to the values derived from the plastic shear variable engagement predictive model for the determination of shear strength of steel fiber-reinforced concrete beams. A good correlation is observed with a mean model to experimental strength ratio of 0.92 and coefficient of variation of 0.12. Abstract

This study evaluates the environmental impacts of a newly designed precast Ultra-High Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) cantilever retaining wall as a sustainable alternative approach compared with the conventional precast Reinforced Concrete (RC) cantilever retaining wall. Nowadays, according to the shocking reports of many researchers worldwide global warming is one of the most devastating problems of human being. To date, lots of research has been undertaken in the concrete industry to tackle this issue through reducing the environmental footprints of our structural designs. In this regard, UHPFRC technology offers substantial benefits through efficient use of materials as well as optimization of the structural designs resulting less CO2 emissions, Embodied Energy (EE) and Global Warming Potential (GWP). UHPFRC as a sustainable construction material is mostly appropriate for the use in the fabrication of precast members such as precast concrete cantilever retaining walls. This study demonstrates the overview of the designed precast concrete cantilever retaining wall manufactured from UHPFRC and its Environmental Impact Calculations (EIC) versus the conventional precast RC cantilever retaining walls. Based on the EIC results, the precast UHPFRC cantilever retaining walls are generally more environmentally sustainable than those built of the conventional RC with respect to the reduction of CO2 emissions, EE and GWP. In summary, the precast UHPFRC cantilever retaining wall proposed in this study is an alternative sustainable solution compared with the conventional precast RC cantilever retaining wall which can be used in many civil engineering projects.

Abstract

This paper proposes a method to modify the strut effectiveness factor in the strut-and-tie model for CFRP-strengthened reinforced concrete deep beams. Two groups of deep beams comprising six ordinary reinforced concrete deep beams and six CFRP-strengthened reinforced concrete deep beams were experimentally tested under the four-point bending configuration. The shear span-to-effective depth ratio of the beams in each group was 0.75, 1.00, 1.25, 1.50, 1.75, and 2.00. The theoretical principal tensile strain in CFRP-strengthened struts was modified based on a proposed empirical relationship, based on two ratios: the experimental to the theoretical value of principal tensile strain and the shear span-to-effective depth of deep beams.

Abstract

Since the emergence of construction technology, construction of affordable and environmentally-sensible home at fast pace has brought dream home within the reach. Structural Insulated Panel (SIP) has become a topic of interest among researchers in the recent years. SIP has the advantages of minimal material wastage and labour-savingness whilst having potential to save house builders' time and money as well as retaining the controlled quality. Nonetheless, it suffers from few drawbacks which should be further explored by researchers in its future design. This study present a brief overview of SIP history and common methods and materials utilised for SIP production. It reviews the recent research in the field of SIP by evaluating its application and drawbacks which enable SIP designers improve on SIP. The review of evaluating SIP application and its drawbacks clearly point to the need for further studies to progress beyond the current SIP to an improved one. It might be achieved by replacement of new material with common material used as skin and core of SIP. Considerably more research will need to be done to obtain SIP universal design standard.

31. Ultra-High Performance 'Ductile' Concrete Technology Toward Sustainable Construction

Abstract

This paper briefly presents an overview of the material characteristics of a Malaysia blend of ultra-high performance ductile concrete (UHPdC) know as DURA®. Examples of the environmental impact calculations of UHPdC structures compared to that of conventional reinforced concrete design are presented. The comparison studies show that many structures constructed from UHPdC are generally more environmentally sustainable than built of the conventional reinforced concrete with respect to the reduction of CO2 emissions and embodied energy. The enhanced durability of UHPdC also provides for significant improvements in the design life, which further supporting the concept of sustainable construction.

Abstract

B-Regions are parts of the structure in which Bernoulli's principle of straight-line strain is used. D-Regions are parts of the structure with a complicated variation in strain. In essence, D-Regions contain the parts of structure which are near to the concentrated forces or steep changes in geometry which are so-called geometrical discontinuities or static discontinuities. Strut-and-Tie Model (STM) is one of the best models to analyse the D-regions. Nevertheless, according to the existing literature, there are still some challenges about STM which are addressed in this paper. STM and its details are investigated to show its common challenges presents some recommendations to overcome these challenges. According to this review, the major challenges in STM are related to the strut effectiveness factor, static uncertainties of STM, strain compatibility, and anchorage requirements in STM. The scope of this research is confined to the two dimensional STM.

Abstract

Strut-and-tie model (STM) method evolved as one of the most useful designs for shear critical structures and discontinuity regions (D-regions). It provides widespread applications in the design of deep beams as recommended by many codes. The estimation of bottle-shaped strut dimensions, as a main constituent of STM, is essential in design calculations. The application of carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) as lightweight material with high tensile strength for strengthening D-regions is currently on the increase. However, the CFRP-strengthening of deep beam complicates the dimensions estimation of bottle-shaped strut. Therefore, this research aimed to investigate the effect of CFRP-strengthening on the deformation of RC strut in the design of deep beams. Two groups of specimens comprising six unstrengthened and six CFRP-strengthened RC deep beams with the shear span to the effective depth ratios (a/d) of 0.75, 1.00, 1.25, 1.50, 1.75, and 2.00 were constructed in this research. These beams were tested under four-point bending configuration. The deformation of struts was experimentally evaluated using the values of strain along and perpendicular to the strut centreline. The evaluation was made by the comparisons between unstrengthened and CFRP-strengthened struts regarding the widening and shortening. The key variables were a/d ratio and applied load level.
