1. An overview of some single machine scheduling problems: polynomial algorithms, complexity and approximability

Abstract

Since the publication of the first scheduling paper in 1954, a huge number of works dealing with different types of single machine problems appeared. They addressed many heuristics and enumerative procedures, complexity results or structural properties of certain problems. Regarding surveys, often particular subjects like special objective functions are discussed, or more general scheduling problems were surveyed, where a substantial part is devoted to single machine problems. In this paper we present some results on polynomial algorithms, complexity and approximation issues, where the main focus is on results, which have been published during the last decades in papers, where at least one of the first two authors of this paper was involved. We hope that the reviewed results will stimulate further investigation in related research fields.

2. An Algorithm for the Euclidean Bounded Multiple Traveling Salesman Problem

Abstract

In the Bounded Multiple Traveling Salesman Problem (BMTSP), a tour for each salesman, that starts and ends at the depot and that respects the bounds on the number of cities that a feasible salesman tour should satisfy, is to be constructed. The objective is to minimize the total length of all tours. Already Euclidean traveling salesman problem is NP-hard. We propose a 3-Phase heuristic algorithm for the Euclidean BMTSP. We tested the algorithm for the 22 benchmark instances and 168 new problem instances that we created. We report 19 best known solutions for the 22 benchmark instances including the 12 largest ones. For the newly created instances, we compared the performance of our algorithm with that of an ILP-solver CPLEX, which was able to construct a feasible solution for 71% of the instances within the time limit of two hours imposed by us. For about 10% of the smallest new instances, CPLEX delivered slightly better solutions, where our algorithm took less than 180 seconds for the largest of these instances. For the remaining 61% of the instances solved by CPLEX, the solutions by our heuristic were, on average, about 21.5% better than those obtained by CPLEX.

Abstract

The northern Andes are crucial for understanding the processes associated with the break-up of Pangea and its impact on the evolution of the Pacific margin of South America. Despite its importance, the origin and significance of mafic magmatism and its relationship with the Permian arc-related granitoids in the northern Andes remains controversial. To address this, we examined the Tierradentro gneisses and amphibolites, which comprise Permian-Triassic lithologies that may help resolve this controversy. Our study focuses on representative lithologies of the Central Cordillera of Colombia, including mylonitized granitoids, metabasites, metapelites, and serpentinites, to shed light on the history of the western margin of Gondwana during and after its break-up (~230 to 200 Ma). To investigate these lithologies, we conducted field observations, petrographic analyses, U-Pb dating of zircons, and whole-rock geochemical, Nd, Pb, and Hf isotopic analyses. Our results show that mylonitized mafic rocks with Triassic crystallization ages (ca. 236 Ma) intruded Permian granitoids. Furthermore, these mafic and felsic rocks were intruded by Jurassic calc-alkaline batholiths. The geochemical and isotopic signatures of these rocks indicate their subduction-related extension origin and further mylonitic deformation, possibly during the Jurassic strike-slip movement of the Farallón plate relative to western Gondwana. The Otú-Pericos fault bounds these rocks to the west, where Jurassic metabasic and metapelitic sequences with serpentinites interleaved and formed in a collisional setting. Our findings suggest that the Pacific margin of northern South America underwent subduction-related extension during the middle Triassic and evolved towards a more oblique convergence during the Jurassic. Abstract

New detrital zircon petrochronological data (~380 analysed grains), including U-Pb dating, trace element, and isotopic analyses from modern sediments and Oligocene-Miocene strata, cropping out along the western slope of the Baudó Range in the northern Pacific coast of Colombia (Tribugá and Cupica Gulfs), are used to assess the nature of Cretaceous basement rocks. Modern sediments of the Cupica Gulf show the existence of ~100-84 Ma zircons with juvenile isotopic signatures (εHf shifting from +11.0 to +12.9), and subduction-related geochemical features, as indicated by the low content of REE (<4000 ppm), Nb (<14 ppm) and Ti (<6 ppm), and the common presence of positive Ce and Eu anomalies. The detrital ages distribution of the analysed sample from the Cupica Gulf, when compared with new and available detrital zircon U-Pb data (~3500 individual ages) from Cretaceous to Pliocene strata of surrounding regions, is very dissimilar, making it difficult for them to be recycled from older sediments. Instead, we interpret the ~100-84 Ma zircons as derived from arc-related igneous rocks probably exposed along unexplored regions of the axis of the northern Baudó Range, which could be associated with the early growth of the Central American arc. Our new data encourage studying barely explored regions of northwestern South America to test available hypotheses regarding the origin of Cretaceous circum-Caribbean island arcs and its linkages with the tectonics of northwestern South America.
