Abstract

The Ingot WFS was designed to overcome some of the challenges present in classical wavefront sensors when they deal with sodium LGSs. This innovative sensor works by sensing the full 3D volume of the elongated LGS and is suitable for use in very large telescopes. A test bench has been assembled at the INAF - Osservatorio Astronomico di Padova laboratories to test and characterize the functioning of the Ingot WFS. In this work, we summarize the main results of the tests performed on a new search algorithm. Then, we move towards a more accurate simulation of the sodium LGS by replicating real time-varying sodium layer profiles. Abstract

PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is ESA's M3 mission designed to detect and characterise extrasolar planets and perform asteroseismic monitoring of a large number of stars. PLATO will detect small planets (down to <2 R_(Earth)) around bright stars (<11 mag), including terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. With the complement of radial velocity observations from the ground, planets will be characterised for their radius, mass, and age with high accuracy (5 %, 10 %, 10 % for an Earth-Sun combination respectively). PLATO will provide us with a large-scale catalogue of well-characterised small planets up to intermediate orbital periods, relevant for a meaningful comparison to planet formation theories and to better understand planet evolution. It will make possible comparative exoplanetology to place our Solar System planets in a broader context. In parallel, PLATO will study (host) stars using asteroseismology, allowing us to determine the stellar properties with high accuracy, substantially enhancing our knowledge of stellar structure and evolution. The payload instrument consists of 26 cameras with 12cm aperture each. For at least four years, the mission will perform high-precision photometric measurements. Here we review the science objectives, present PLATO's target samples and fields, provide an overview of expected core science performance as well as a description of the instrument and the mission profile at the beginning of the serial production of the flight cameras. PLATO is scheduled for a launch date end 2026. This overview therefore provides a summary of the mission to the community in preparation of the upcoming operational phases.

Abstract

Full sky coverage Adaptive Optics on Extremely Large Telescopes requires the adoption of several Laser Guide Stars as references.With such large apertures, the apparent elongation of the beacons is absolutely significant.With few exceptions,WaveFront Sensors designed for Natural Guide Stars are adapted and used in suboptimal mode in this context. We analyse and describe the geometrical properties of a class of WaveFront Sensors that are specifically designed to deal with Laser Guide Stars propagated from a location in the immediate vicinity of the telescope aperture. We describe in three dimensions the loci where the light of the Laser Guide Stars would focus in the focal volume located behind the focal plane (where astronomical objects are reimaged). We also describe the properties of several types of optomechanical devices that, through refraction and reflections, act as perturbers for this new class of pupil plane sensors, which we call ingot WaveFront Sensor. We give the recipes both for the most reasonable complex version of these WaveFront Sensors, with 6 pupils, and for the simplest one, with only 3 pupils. Both of them are referred to the ELT case. Elements to have a qualitative idea of how the sensitivity of such a new class of sensors compared to conventional ones are outlined. Abstract

Son Of X-Shooter (SOXS) is a double-armed (UV-VIS, NIR) spectrograph designed to be mounted at the ESO-NTT in La Silla, now in its Assembly Integration and Verification (AIV) phase. The instrument is designed following a modular approach so that each sub-system can be integrated in parallel before their assembly at system level. INAF-Osservatorio Astronomico di Padova will deliver the Common Path (CP) sub-system, which represents the backbone of the entire instrument. In this paper, we describe the foreseen operation for the CP alignment and we report some results already achieved, showing that we envisaged the suitable setup and the strategy to meet the opto-mechanical requirements.

Abstract

The basic outline of a pupil plane WaveFront Sensor is reviewed taking into account that the source to be sensed could be different from an unresolved source, i.e. it is extended, and that it could deploy also in a 3D fashion, enough to exceed the field's depth of the observing telescope. Under these conditions it is pointed out that the features of the reference are not invariant for different position on the pupil and it is shown that the INGOT WFS is the equivalent of the Pyramid for a Laser Guide Star. Abstract

In the last years, the Observatory of Padova (Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica - Osservatorio Astronomico di Padova) and the University of Padova have been involved massively in projects dedicated to the exoplanets search, both ground, and space-based. The activities concerning my Ph.D. have been exploited both in the framework of the space projects and in the field of ground instrumentation. PLATO, the acronym of "PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars", is a ESA mission o with the target to detect and characterize exoplanets utilizing their transit on a bright star. The overall instrumental layout consists of a multi-telescope concept instrument, composed by several tens of telescope units, for which it has developed an all-refractive optical solution. These devices are characterized by a very large Field of View (>20 degrees on one side) with an optical quality that fits most of the energy into a single sensor pixel. I participated in the Assembly, Integration, and Verification (AIV) of the Telescope Optical Unit prototype, to validate the AIV procedure and the telescope optical performance in-flight conditions. SHARK-NIR, the acronym of "System for coronagraphy with High order Adaptive optics from R to K band - Near-Infrared", is an instrument designed to search and characterize the young exo-planetary system and star-forming regions in the NIR domain, in coronagraphic direct imaging and spectroscopic mode. It has been selected for the 2nd generation Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) instruments, and it will take advantage of the excellent performance of the LBT eXtreme Adaptive Optics (XAO) correction, necessary for SHARK-NIR to achieve the best possible coronagraphic performance, which is mandatory to detect faint planets orbiting around bright stars. Abstract

Several Extreme Adaptive Optics (XAO) systems dedicated to the detection and characterisation of the exoplanets are currently in operation for 8-10 meter class telescopes. Coronagraphs are commonly used in these facilities to reject the diffracted light of an observed star and enable direct imaging and spectroscopy of its circumstellar environment. SHARK-NIR is a coronagraphic camera that will be implemented at the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT). After an extensive simulation campaign, SHARK-NIR team selected a suite of coronagraphic techniques to be implemented in the instrument in order to fulfil the scientific requirements. In summary, the Gaussian Lyot coronagraph is the option to serve all those science cases requiring field-stabilization and moderate contrast. Observations in pupil-stabilized mode to search for exoplanets can take advantage of three Shaped Pupil masks (SPC) and a Four-Quadrant Phase Mask (FQPM) coronagraph. The SPC are designed for high contrast on a small field close to the star and are robust to image and pupil jitter. The FQPM allows to access the entire scientific FoV (18''x18'') and delivers excellent performance in ideal conditions (high Strehl ratios), but performance is still good, both close and further away from the star, even at lower Strehl and with moderate vibrations. After the procurement phase, the coronagraphic masks were delivered to our labs and we started to test their performance on the optical bench and define the alignment procedures that will be employed in the final integration of the instrument in our cleaning room. In this article, we describe the tests that we performed in the lab with SHARK-NIR coronagraphs. We measured the contrast achievable with each technique in very-high Strehl conditions and defined the alignment-integration procedures.

Abstract

In the last years we have operated two very similar ultrafast photon counting photometers (Iqueye and Aqueye+) on different telescopes. The absolute time accuracy in time tagging the detected photon with these instruments is of the order of 500 ps for hours of observation, allowing us to obtain, for example, the most accurate ever light curve in visible light of the optical pulsars. Recently we adapted the two photometers for working together on two telescopes at Asiago (Italy), for realizing an Hanbury-Brown and Twiss Intensity Interferometry like experiment with two 3.9 km distant telescopes. Abstract

Several astronomical surveys aimed at the investigation of the extragalactic components were carried out in order to map systematically the universe and its constituents. An excellent level of detail is needed, and it is possible only using space telescopes or with the application of adaptive optics (AO) techniques for ground-based observatories. By simulating K-band observations of 6000 high-redshift galaxies in the Chandra Deep Field South region, we have already shown how an extremely large telescope can carry out photometric surveys successfully using the Global-MCAO, a natural guide stars based technique that allows the development of extragalactic research, otherwise impracticable without using laser guide stars. As the outcome of the analysis represents an impact science case for the new instruments on upcoming ground-based telescopes, here we show how the investigation of other observed deep fields could profit from such a technique. Abstract

The wavefront sensors used today at the biggest World's telescopes have either a high dynamic range or a high sensitivity, and they are subject to a linear trade off between these two parameters. A new class of wavefront sensors, the Generalised Optical Differentiation Wavefront Sensors, has been devised, in a way not to undergo this linear trade off and to decouple the dynamic range from the sensitivity. This new class of WFSs is based on the light filtering in the focal plane from a dedicated amplitude filter, which is a hybrid between a linear filter, whose physical dimension is related to the dynamic range, and a step in the amplitude, whose size is related to the sensitivity. We propose here a possible technical implementation of this kind of WFS, making use of a simple holographic diffuser to diffract part of the light in a ring shape around the pin of a pyramid wavefront sensor. In this way, the undiffracted light reaches the pin of the pyramid, contributing to the high sensitivity regime of the WFS, while the diffused light is giving a sort of static modulation of the pyramid, allowing to have some signal even in high turbulence conditions. The holographic diffuser zeroth order efficiency is strictly related to the sensitivity of the WFS, while the diffusing angle of the diffracted light gives the amount of modulation and thus the dynamic range. By properly choosing these two parameters it is possible to build a WFS with high sensitivity and high dynamic range in a static fashion. Introducing dynamic parts in the setup allows to have a set of different diffuser that can be alternated in front of the pyramid, if the change in the seeing conditions requires it., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

We investigate experimentally the role of spatial coherence on optical beam shifts. This topic has been the subject of recent theoretical debate. We consider Gaussian Schell-model beams, with different spatial degrees of coherence, reflected at an air-glass interface. We prove that the angular Goos-H\"anchen and the angular Imbert-Fedorov effects are affected by the spatial degree of coherence of the incident beam, whereas the spatial Goos-H\"anchen effect does not depend on incoherence. Our data unambiguously resolve the theoretical debate in favour of one specific theory.

Abstract

The VLT Survey Telescope is a f/5.5 modified Ritchey-Chretien imaging telescope, which is being installed at the ESO-Paranal Observatory. It will provide a one square degree corrected field of view to perform survey-projects in the wavelength range from UV to I band. In this paper we describe the opto-mechanical alignment procedure of the 2.61m primary mirror, the secondary and correctors lenses onto the mechanical structure of the telescope. The alignment procedure does not rely on the mechanical precision of the mirrors. Abstract

Observations of a pair of mesospheric bore disturbances that propagated through the nighttime mesosphere over Europe are presented. The observations were made at the Padua Observatory, Asiago (45.9°N, 11.5°E) by the Boston University all-sky imager on 11 March 2013. The bores appeared over the north-west horizon, approximately 30 minutes apart, and propagated towards the south-east. Using additional satellite and radar data, we present evidence indicating the bores originated in the mesosphere from a single, larger-scale mesospheric disturbance propagating through the mesopause region. Furthermore, the large-scale mesospheric disturbance appeared to be associated with an intense weather disturbance that moved southeastwards over the United Kingdom and Western Europe during 10 and 11 March.

Abstract

In the last years, the Observatory of Padova (Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica – Osservatorio Astronomico di Padova) and the University of Padova have been involved massively in projects dedicated to the exoplanets search, both ground, and space-based. SHARK-NIR, the acronym of “System for coronagraphy with High order Adaptive optics from R to K band – Near-Infrared”, is an instrument designed to search and characterize the young exo-planetary system and star-forming regions in the NIR domain, in coronagraphic direct imaging and spectroscopic mode. It has been selected for the 2nd generation Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) instruments, and it will take advantage of the excellent performance of the LBT adaptive optics system, which is delivering an eXtreme Adaptive Optics (XAO) correction, necessary for SHARK-NIR to achieve the best possible coronagraphic performance, which is mandatory to detect faint planets orbiting around bright stars. CHEOPS, the acronym of “CHaracterising ExOPlanet Satellite”, is the first mission dedicated to the characterization of small-size transiting planets using ultrahigh precision photometry on bright stars already known to host planets. It will allow an accurate determination of the radii of transiting planets, for which the mass has already measured from ground-based spectroscopic surveys. It will also provide precision radii for new planets discovered by the next generation of ground-based transits surveys (Neptune-size and smaller). PLATO, the acronym of “PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars”, is a mission of Medium size satellites proposed for the European Space Agency in the program “Cosmic Vision”, with the target to detect and characterize exoplanets utilizing their transit on a bright star. The overall instrumental layout proposed by the Plato Payload Consortium consists of a multi-telescope concept instrument, composed by several tens of telescope units, for which it has developed an all-refractive optical solution. These devices are characterized by a very large Field of View (more than 20 degrees on one side) with an optical quality that fits most of the energy into a single sensor pixel. Such a goal can be achieved in a variety of solutions, some including aspheric elements as well. The activities concerning my Ph.D. have been exploited both in the framework of the space projects and in the field of ground instrumentation. For the PLATO project, I participated in the Assembly, Integration, and Verification (AIV) of the Telescope Optical Unit prototype, to validate the AIV procedure and the telescope optical performance in-flight conditions. Concerning SHARK, my activity has been performing optical alignment and qualification of the instrument.
