The neutron-rich unbound fluorine isotope $^{30}$F$_{21}$ has been observed for the first time by measuring its neutron decay at the SAMURAI spectrometer (RIBF, RIKEN) in the quasi-free proton knockout reaction of $^{31}$Ne nuclei at 235 MeV/nucleon. The mass and thus one-neutron-separation energy of $^{30}$F has been determined to be $S_n = -472\pm 58 \mathrm{(stat.)} \pm 33 \mathrm{(sys.)}$ keV from the measurement of its invariant-mass spectrum. The absence of a sharp drop in $S_n$($^{30}$F) shows that the ``magic'' $N=20$ shell gap is not restored close to $^{28}$O, which is in agreement with our shell-model calculations that predict a near degeneracy between the neutron $d$ and $fp$ orbitals, with the $1p_{3/2}$ and $1p_{1/2}$ orbitals becoming more bound than the $0f_{7/2}$ one. This degeneracy and reordering of orbitals has two potential consequences: $^{28}$O behaves like a strongly superfluid nucleus with neutron pairs scattering across shells, and both $^{29,31}$F appear to be good two-neutron halo-nucleus candidates., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters

A dedicated isochronous storage ring, named the Rare-RI Ring, was constructed at the RI Beam Factory of RIKEN, aiming at precision mass measurements of nuclei located in uncharted territories of the nuclear chart. The Rare-RI Ring employs the isochronous mass spectrometry technique with the goal to achieve a relative mass precision of $10^{-6}$ within a measurement time of less than 1 ms. The performance of the facility was demonstrated through mass measurements of neutron-rich nuclei with well-known masses. Velocity or magnetic rigidity is measured for every particle prior to its injection into the ring, wherein its revolution time is accurately determined. The latter quantity is used to determine the mass of the particle, while the former one is needed for non-isochronicity corrections. Mass precisions on the order of $10^{-5}$ were achieved in the first commissioning, which demonstrates that Rare-RI Ring is a powerful tool for mass spectrometry of short-lived nuclei.

The calcium isotopes are an ideal system to investigate the evolution of shell structure and magic numbers. Although the properties of surface nucleons in calcium have been well studied, probing the structure of deeply bound nucleons remains a challenge. Here, we report on the first measurement of unbound states in $^{53}$Ca and $^{55}$Ca, populated from \ts{54,56}Ca($p,pn$) reactions at a beam energy of around 216 MeV/nucleon at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotopes Beam Factory. The resonance properties, partial cross sections, and momentum distributions of these unbound states were analyzed. Orbital angular momentum $l$ assignments were extracted from momentum distributions based on calculations using the distorted wave impulse approximation (DWIA) reaction model. The resonances at excitation energies of 5516(41)\,keV in $^{53}$Ca and 6000(250)\,keV in $^{55}$Ca indicate a significant $l$\, =\,3 component, providing the first experimental evidence for the $\nu 0f_{7/2}$ single-particle strength of unbound hole states in the neutron-rich Ca isotopes. The observed excitation energies and cross-sections point towards extremely localized and well separated strength distributions, with some fragmentation for the $\nu 0f_{7/2}$ orbital in $^{55}$Ca. These results are in good agreement with predictions from shell-model calculations using the effective GXPF1Bs interaction and \textit{ab initio} calculations and diverge markedly from the experimental distributions in the nickel isotones at $Z=28$., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures

The structure and decay of the most neutron-rich beryllium isotope, $^{16}$Be, has been investigated following proton knockout from a high-energy $^{17}$B beam. Two relatively narrow resonances were observed for the first time, with energies of $0.84(3)$ and $2.15(5)$ MeV above the two-neutron decay threshold and widths of $0.32(8)$ and $0.95(15)$ MeV respectively. These were assigned to be the ground ($J^{\pi}=0^+$) and first excited ($2^+$) state, with $E_x=1.31(6)$ MeV. The mass excess of $^{16}$Be was thus deduced to be $56.93(13)$ MeV, some $0.5$ MeV more bound than the only previous measurement. Both states were observed to decay by direct two-neutron emission. Calculations incorporating the evolution of the wavefunction during the decay as a genuine three-body process reproduced the principal characteristics of the neutron-neutron energy spectra for both levels, indicating that the ground state exhibits a strong spatially compact dineutron component, while the 2$^+$ level presents a far more diffuse neutron-neutron distribution.

The cluster structure of the neutron-rich isotope $^{10}$Be has been probed via the $(p,p\alpha)$ reaction at 150 MeV/nucleon in inverse kinematics and in quasifree conditions. The populated states of $^{6}$He residues were investigated through missing mass spectroscopy. The triple differential cross-section for the ground-state transition was extracted for quasifree angle pairs ($\theta_{p}$, $\theta_{\alpha}$) and compared to distorted-wave impulse approximation reaction calculations performed in a microscopic framework using successively the Tohsaki-Horiuchi-Schuck-R\"opke product wave-function and the wave-function deduced from Antisymmetrized Molecular Dynamics calculations. The remarkable agreement between calculated and measured cross-sections in both shape and magnitude validates the molecular structure description of the $^{10}$Be ground-state, configured as an $\alpha$-$\alpha$ core with two valence neutrons occupying $\pi$-type molecular orbitals., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 1 tables

Gamma decays were observed in $^{56}$Ca and $^{58}$Ca following quasi-free one-proton knockout reactions from $^{57,59}$Sc beams at $\approx 200$ MeV/nucleon. For $^{56}$Ca, a $\gamma$ ray transition was measured to be 1456(12) keV, while for $^{58}$Ca an indication for a transition was observed at 1115(34) keV. Both transitions were tentatively assigned as the $2^+_1 \rightarrow 0^+_{gs}$ decays, and were compared to results from ab initio and conventional shell-model approaches. A shell-model calculation in a wide model space with a marginally modified effective nucleon-nucleon interaction depicts excellent agreement with experiment for $2^+_1$ level energies, two-neutron separation energies, and reaction cross sections, corroborating the formation of a new nuclear shell above the $N$ = 34 shell. Its constituents, the $0f_{5/2}$ and $0g_{9/2}$ orbitals, are almost degenerate. This degeneracy precludes the possibility for a doubly magic $^{60}$Ca and potentially drives the dripline of Ca isotopes to $^{70}$Ca or even beyond., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

This work describes a silicon tracker system developed for experiments with proton-rich radioactive ion beams at the SAMURAI superconducting spectrometer of RIBF at RIKEN. The system is designed for accurate angular reconstruction and atomic number identification of relativistic heavy ions and protons which are simultaneously produced in reactions motivated by studies of proton capture reactions of interest for nuclear astrophysics. The technical characteristics of the tracking array are described in detail as are its performance in two pilot experiments. The physics justification for such a system is also presented.

The dineutron correlation is systematically studied in three different Borromean nuclei near the neutron dripline, 11Li, 14Be and 17B, via the (p, pn) knockout reaction measured at the RIBF facility in RIKEN. For the three nuclei, the correlation angle between the valence neutrons is found to be largest in the same range of intrinsic momenta, which can be associated to the nuclear surface. This result reinforces the prediction that the formation of the dineutron is universal in environments with low neutron density, such as the surface of neutron-rich Borromean nuclei.

Detailed $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy of the exotic neon isotope $^{28}$Ne has been performed for the first time using the one-neutron removal reaction from $^{29}$Ne on a liquid hydrogen target at 240~MeV/nucleon. Based on an analysis of parallel momentum distributions, a level scheme with spin-parity assignments has been constructed for $^{28}$Ne and the negative-parity states are identified for the first time. The measured partial cross sections and momentum distributions reveal a significant intruder $p$-wave strength providing evidence of the breakdown of the $N=20$ and $N=28$ shell gaps. Only a weak, possible $f$-wave strength was observed to bound final states. Large-scale shell-model calculations with different effective interactions do not reproduce the large $p$-wave and small $f$-wave strength observed experimentally, indicating an ongoing challenge for a complete theoretical description of the transition into the island of inversion along the Ne isotopic chain.

STRASSE (Silicon Tracker for RAdioactive nuclei Studies at SAMURAI Experiments) is a new detection system under construction for quasi-free scattering (QFS) measurements at 200-250 MeV/nucleon at the RIBF facility of the RIKEN Nishina Center. It consists of a charged-particle silicon tracker coupled with a dedicated thick liquid hydrogen target (up to 150-mm long) in a compact geometry to fit inside large scintillator or germanium arrays. Its design was optimized for two types of studies using QFS: missing-mass measurements and in-flight prompt $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy. This article describes (i) the resolution requirements needed to go beyond the sensitivity of existing systems for these two types of measurements, (ii) the conceptual design of the system using detailed simulations of the setup and (iii) its complete technical implementation and challenges. The final tracker aims at a sub-mm reaction vertex resolution and is expected to reach a missing-mass resolution below 2 MeV in $\sigma$ for $(p,2p)$ reactions when combined with the CsI(Na) CATANA array., Comment: 25 pages, 29 figures

We report on the first proton-induced single proton- and neutron-removal reactions from the neutron-deficient $^{14}$O nucleus with large Fermi-surface asymmetry $S_n-S_p$ = 18.6 MeV at $\sim$100 MeV/nucleon, a widely used energy regime for rare-isotope studies. The measured inclusive cross sections and parallel momentum distributions of the $^{13}$N and $^{13}$O residues are compared to the state-of-the-art reaction models, with nuclear structure inputs from many-body shell-model calculations. Our results provide the first quantitative contributions of multiple reaction mechanisms including the quasifree knockout, inelastic scattering and nucleon transfer processes. It is shown that the inelastic scattering and nucleon transfer, usually neglected at such energy regime, contribute about 50% and 30% to the loosely bound proton and deeply bound neutron removal, respectively. These multiple reaction mechanisms should be considered in analyses of inclusive one-nucleon removal cross sections measured at intermediate energies for quantitative investigation of single-particle strengths and correlations in atomic nuclei.

The results on the the vector $A_y$, $A_{yy}$ and $A_{xx}$ analyzing powers in deuteron-proton elastic scattering at large scattering angles are presented. These data were obtained at internal target at JINR Nuclotron in the energy range 400-1800 MeV using polarized deuteron beam from new polarized ion source. The nucleus $^{29}$Ne is situated at the border of the island of inversion. Despite significant efforts, no bound low-lying intruder $f_{7/2}$-state, which would place $^{29}$Ne firmly inside the island of inversion, has yet been observed. Here, the first investigation of unbound states of $^{29}$Ne is reported. The states were populated in $^{30}\mathrm{Ne}(p,pn)$ and $^{30}\mathrm{Na}(p,2p)$ reactions at a beam energy of around $230$ MeV/nucleon, and analyzed in terms of their resonance properties, partial cross sections and momentum distributions. The momentum distributions are compared to calculations using the eikonal, direct reaction model, allowing $\ell$-assignments for the observed states. The lowest-lying resonance at an excitation energy of 1.48(4) MeV shows clear signs of a significant $\ell$=3-component, giving first evidence for $f_{7/2}$ single particle strength in $^{29}$Ne. States in the $N=35$ and 37 isotopes $^{55,57}$Ca have been populated by direct proton-induced nucleon removal reactions from $^{56,58}$Sc and $^{56}$Ca beams at the RIBF. In addition, the $(p,2p)$ quasi-free single-proton removal reaction from $^{56}$Ca was studied. Excited states in $^{55}$K, $^{55}$Ca, and $^{57}$Ca were established for the first time via in-beam $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy. Results for the proton and neutron removal reactions from $^{56}$Ca to states in $^{55}$K and $^{55}$Ca for the level energies, excited state lifetimes, and exclusive cross sections agree well with state-of-the-art theoretical calculations using different approaches. The observation of a short-lived state in $^{57}$Ca suggests a transition in the calcium isotopic chain from single-particle dominated states at $N=35$ to collective excitations at $N=37$., Comment: accepted Phys. We study isoscalar (IS) and isovector (IV) densities in ${}^{40} \mathrm{Ca}$ in comparison with theoretical densities calculated by Skyrme Hartree-Fock (HF) models. The charge symmetry breaking and the charge independence breaking forces are introduced to study the effect on the IV density. The effect of isospin mixing in the ground-state density is examined by using the particle-vibration coupling model taking into account the collective IV giant monopole excitation. We show a clear correlations in the IV density and isospin impurity of ${}^{40} \mathrm{Ca}$ within the HF and the particle-vibration coupling model. The Rare-RI Ring (R3) is a recently commissioned cyclotron-like storage ring mass spectrometer dedicated to mass measurements of exotic nuclei far from stability at Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory (RIBF) in RIKEN. The first application of mass measurement using the R3 mass spectrometer at RIBF is reported. Rare isotopes produced at RIBF, $^{127}$Sn, $^{126}$In, $^{125}$Cd, $^{124}$Ag, $^{123}$Pd, were injected in R3. Masses of $^{126}$In, $^{125}$Cd, and $^{123}$Pd were measured whereby the mass uncertainty of $^{123}$Pd was improved. This is the first reported measurement with a new storage ring mass spectrometery technique realized at a heavy-ion cyclotron and employing individual injection of the pre-identified rare nuclei. The latter is essential for the future mass measurements of the rarest isotopes produced at RIBF. The impact of the new $^{123}$Pd result on the solar $r$-process abundances in a neutron star merger event is investigated by performing reaction network calculations of 20 trajectories with varying electron fraction $Y_e$. It is found that the neutron capture cross section on $^{123}$Pd increases by a factor of 2.2 and $\beta$-delayed neutron emission probability, $P_\mathrm{1n}$, of $^{123}$Rh increases by 14\%. The neutron capture cross section on $^{122}$Pd decreases by a factor of 2.6 leading to pileup of material at $A=122$, thus reproducing the trend of the solar $r$-process abundances. The trend of the two-neutron separation energies (S$_\mathrm{2n}$) was investigated for the Pd isotopic chain. The new mass measurement with improved uncertainty excludes large changes of the S$_\mathrm{2n}$ value at $N=77$. Such large increase of the S$_\mathrm{2n}$ values before $N=82$ was proposed as an alternative to the quenching of the $N=82$ shell gap to reproduce $r$-process abundances in the mass region of $A=112-124$.

A first gamma-ray study of 47,49Cl spectroscopy was performed at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory with 50Ar projectiles at 217 MeV/nucleon, impinging on the liquid hydrogen target of the MINOS device. Prompt de-excitation gamma-rays were measured with the NaI(Tl) array DALI2+. Through the one-proton knockout reaction 50Ar(p,2p), a spin assignment could be determined for the low-lying states of 49Cl from the momentum distribution obtained with the SAMURAI spectrometer. A spin-parity J = 3/2+ is deduced for the ground state of 49Cl, similar to the recently studied N = 32 isotope 51K.

We searched for the $\alpha$ condensed state in $^{13}$C by measuring the $\alpha$ inelastic scattering at $E_{\alpha} = 388$ MeV at forward angles including 0 degrees. We performed the distorted-wave Born-approximation calculation with the single-folding potential and the multipole decomposition analysis to determine the isoscalar transition strengths in $^{13}$C. We found a bump structure around $E_x = 12.5$ MeV due to the isoscalar monopole ($IS0$) transition. A peak-fit analysis suggested that this bump consisted of several $1/2^-$ states. We propose that this bump is due to the mirror state of the 13.5 MeV-state in $^{13}$N, which dominantly decays to the $\alpha$ condensed state in $^{12}$C. It was speculated that the $1/2^-$ states around $E_x = 12.5$ MeV were candidates for the $\alpha$ condensed state, but the $3\alpha + n$ orthogonality condition model suggests that the $\alpha$ condensed state is unlikely to emerge as the negative parity states. We also found two $1/2^+$ or $3/2^+$ states at $E_x = 14.5$ and 16.1 MeV excited with the isoscalar dipole ($IS1$) strengths. We suggest that the 16.1-MeV state is a possible candidate for the $\alpha$ condensed state predicted by the cluster-model calculations on the basis of the good correspondence between the experimental and calculated level structures. However, the theoretical $IS1$ transition strength for this state is significantly smaller than the measured value. A kinematically complete quasi-free $(p,pn)$ experiment in inverse kinematics was performed to study the structure of the Borromean nucleus $^{17}$B, which had long been considered to have neutron halo. By analyzing the momentum distributions and exclusive cross sections, we obtained the spectroscopic factors for $1s_{1/2}$ and $0d_{5/2}$ orbitals, and a surprisingly small percentage of 9(2)$\%$ was determined for $1s_{1/2}$. Our finding of such a small $1s_{1/2}$ component and the halo features reported in prior experiments can be explained by the deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum, revealing a definite but not dominant neutron halo in $^{17}$B. The present work gives the smallest $s$- or $p$-orbital component among known nuclei exhibiting halo features, and implies that the dominant occupation of $s$ or $p$ orbitals is not a prerequisite for the occurrence of neutron halo., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters,8 pages, 4 figures

In this review article we discuss the present status of direct nuclear reactions and the nuclear structure aspects one can study with them. We discuss the spectroscopic information we can assess in experiments involving transfer reactions, heavy-ion-induced knockout reactions and quasifree scattering with (p,2p), (p,pn), and (e,e'p) reactions. In particular, we focus on the proton-to-neutron asymmetry of the quenching of the spectroscopic strength., Comment: 138 pages, 63 figures

Low-lying excited states in the $N=32$ isotope $^{50}$Ar were investigated by in-beam $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy following proton- and neutron-knockout, multi-nucleon removal, and proton inelastic scattering at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. The energies of the two previously reported transitions have been confirmed, and five additional states are presented for the first time, including a candidate for a 3$^-$ state. The level scheme built using $\gamma\gamma$ coincidences was compared to shell-model calculations in the $sd-pf$ model space, and to ab initio predictions based on chiral two- and three-nucleon interactions. Theoretical proton- and neutron-knockout cross sections suggest that two of the new transitions correspond to $2^+$ states, while the previously proposed $4^+$ state could also correspond to a $2^+$ state., Comment: Accepted for Phys. An electrostatic time-of-flight detector named E-MCP has been developed for quick diagnostics of circulating beam and timing measurement in mass spectrometry at the Rare-RI Ring in RIKEN. The E-MCP detector consists of a conversion foil, potential grids, and a microchannel plate. Secondary electrons are released from the surface of the foil when a heavy ion hits it. The electrons are accelerated and deflected by 90$^\circ$ toward the microchannel plate by electrostatic potentials. A thin carbon foil and a thin aluminum-coated mylar foil were used as conversion foils. We obtained time resolutions of 69(1) ps and 43(1) ps (standard deviation) for a $^{84}$Kr beam at an energy of 170 MeV/u when using the carbon and the aluminum-coated mylar foils, respectively. A detection efficiency of approximately 90% was obtained for both foils. The E-MCP detector equipped with the carbon foil was installed inside the Rare-RI Ring to confirm particle circulation within a demonstration experiment on mass measurements of nuclei around $^{78}$Ge produced by in-flight fission of uranium beam at the RI Beam Factory in RIKEN. Periodic time signals from circulating ions were clearly observed. Revolution times for $^{78}$Ge, $^{77}$Ga, and $^{76}$Zn were obtained. The results confirmed successful circulation of the short-lived nuclei inside the Rare-RI Ring.

Background: Eclipse effect of the neutron and proton in a deuteron target is essential to correctly describe high-energy deuteron scattering. The nucleus-deuteron scattering needs information not only on the nucleus-proton but also the nucleus-neutron interaction, for which no direct measurement of the nucleus-neutron cross sections is available for unstable nuclei. Purpose: We systematically evaluated the total reaction cross sections by a deuteron target to explore the feasibility of extracting the nucleus-neutron interaction from measurable cross sections. Methods: High-energy nucleus-deuteron collision is described by the Glauber model, in which the proton and neutron configuration of the deuteron is explicitly taken into account. Results: Our calculation reproduces available experimental total reaction cross section data on the nucleus-deuteron scattering. The possibility of extracting the nucleus-neutron total reaction cross section from nucleus-deuteron and nucleus-proton total reaction cross sections is explored. The total reaction cross sections of a nucleus by proton, neutron, and deuteron targets can be expressed, to good accuracy, in terms of the nuclear matter radius and neutron skin thickness. Incident-energy dependence of the total reaction cross sections is examined. Conclusions: The total reaction cross section on a deuteron target includes information on both the nucleus-neutron and nucleus-proton profile functions. The formation of a dineutron in the nucleus $^{11}$Li is found to be localized to the surface region. The experiment measured the intrinsic momentum of the struck neutron in $^{11}$Li via the $(p,pn)$ knockout reaction at 246 MeV/nucleon. The correlation angle between the two neutrons is, for the first time, measured as a function of the intrinsic neutron momentum. A comparison with reaction calculations reveals the localization of the dineutron at $r\sim3.6$ fm. The results also support the density dependence of dineutron formation as deduced from Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations for nuclear matter., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures. By using isochronous mass spectrometry (IMS) at the experimental cooler storage ring CSRe, masses of short-lived $^{44}$Cr, $^{46}$Mn, $^{48}$Fe, $^{50}$Co and $^{52}$Ni were measured for the first time and the precision of the mass of $^{40}$Ti was improved by a factor of about 2. Relative precisions of $\delta m/m=(1-2)\times$10$^{-6}$ have been achieved. Details of the measurements and data analysis are described. The obtained masses are compared with the Atomic-Mass Evaluation 2016 (AME$^{\prime}$16) and with theoretical model predictions. The new mass data enable us to extract the higher order coefficients, $d$ and $e$, of the quartic form of the isobaric multiplet mass equation (IMME) for the $fp$-shell isospin quintets. Unexpectedly large $d$- and $e$-values for $A=44$ quintet are found. By re-visiting the previous experimental data on $\beta$-delayed protons from $^{44}$Cr decay, it is suggested that the observed anomaly could be due to the misidentification of the $T=2$, $J^\pi=0^{+}$ isobaric analog state (IAS) in $^{44}$V.

The parity-transfer $({}^{16}{\rm O},{}^{16}{\rm F}(0^-,{\rm g.s.}))$ reaction is presented as a new probe for investigating isovector $0^-$ states in nuclei. The properties of $0^-$ states provide a stringent test of the threshold density for pion condensation in nuclear matter. Utilizing a $0^+ \rightarrow 0^-$ transition in the projectile, the parity-transfer reaction transfers an internal parity to a target nucleus, resulting in a unique sensitivity to unnatural-parity states. Consequently, the selectivity for $0^-$ states is higher than in other reactions employed to date. The probe was applied to a study of the $0^-$ states in ${}^{12}{\rm B}$ via the ${}^{12}{\rm C}({}^{16}{\rm O},{}^{16}{\rm F}(0^-,{\rm g.s.}))$ reaction at $247~{\rm MeV/u}$. The excitation energy spectra were deduced by detecting the ${}^{15}{\rm O}+p$ pair produced in the decay of the ${}^{16}{\rm F}$ ejectile. A known $0^-$ state at $E_x = 9.3~{\rm MeV}$ was observed with an unprecedentedly high signal-to-noise ratio. The data also revealed new candidates of $0^-$ states at $E_x=6.6 \pm 0.4$ and $14.8 \pm 0.3~{\rm MeV}$. Detailed spectroscopy of the neutron-unbound nucleus $^{28}$F has been performed for the first time following proton/neutron removal from $^{29}$Ne/$^{29}$F beams at energies around 230 MeV/nucleon. The invariant-mass spectra were reconstructed for both the $^{27}$F$^{(*)}+n$ and $^{26}$F$^{(*)}+2n$ coincidences and revealed a series of well-defined resonances. A near-threshold state was observed in both reactions and is identified as the $^{28}$F ground state, with $S_n(^{28}$F$)=-199(6)$ keV, while analysis of the $2n$ decay channel allowed a considerably improved $S_n(^{27}$F$)=1620(60)$ keV to be deduced. Comparison with shell-model predictions and eikonal-model reaction calculations have allowed spin-parity assignments to be proposed for some of the lower-lying levels of $^{28}$F. Importantly, in the case of the ground state, the reconstructed $^{27}$F$+n$ momentum distribution following neutron removal from $^{29}$F indicates that it arises mainly from the $1p_{3/2}$ neutron intruder configuration. This demonstrates that the island of inversion around $N=20$ includes $^{28}$F, and most probably $^{29}$F, and suggests that $^{28}$O is not doubly magic., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, Supplemental Material, accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters

Excited states in the $N=40$ isotone $^{62}$Ti were populated via the $^{63}$V$(p,2p)$$^{62}$Ti reaction at $\sim$200~MeV/u at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory and studied using $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy. The energies of the $2^+_1 \rightarrow 0^{+}_{\mathrm{gs}}$ and $4^+_1 \rightarrow 2^+_1$ transitions, observed here for the first time, indicate a deformed $^{62}$Ti ground state. These energies are increased compared to the neighboring $^{64}$Cr and $^{66}$Fe isotones, suggesting a small decrease of quadrupole collectivity. The present measurement is well reproduced by large-scale shell-model calculations based on effective interactions, while ab initio and beyond mean-field calculations do not yet reproduce our findings. The shell-model calculations for $^{62}$Ti show a dominant configuration with four neutrons excited across the $N=40$ gap. Likewise, they indicate that the $N=40$ island of inversion extends down to $Z=20$, disfavoring a possible doubly magic character of the elusive $^{60}$Ca.

Nuclear magic numbers, which emerge from the strong nuclear force based on quantum chromodynamics, correspond to fully occupied energy shells of protons, or neutrons inside atomic nuclei. Doubly magic nuclei, with magic numbers for both protons and neutrons, are spherical and extremely rare across the nuclear landscape. While the sequence of magic numbers is well established for stable nuclei, evidence reveals modifications for nuclei with a large proton-to-neutron asymmetry. Here, we provide the first spectroscopic study of the doubly magic nucleus $^{78}$Ni, fourteen neutrons beyond the last stable nickel isotope. We provide direct evidence for its doubly magic nature, which is also predicted by ab initio calculations based on chiral effective field theory interactions and the quasi-particle random-phase approximation. However, our results also provide the first indication of the breakdown of the neutron magic number 50 and proton magic number 28 beyond this stronghold, caused by a competing deformed structure. State-of-the-art phenomenological shell-model calculations reproduce this shape coexistence, predicting further a rapid transition from spherical to deformed ground states with $^{78}$Ni as turning point.

Proton-3He scattering is one of the good probes to study the T=3/2 channel of three--nucleon forces. We have measured 3He analyzing powers for p-3He elastic scattering with the polarized 3He target at 70 and 100 MeV. The data are compared with the theoretical predictions based on the modern nucleon--nucleon potentials. Large discrepancies are found between the data and the calculations at the angles where the 3He analyzing power takes the minimum and maximum values, which are not explained by taking into account Delta-isobar degrees of freedom., Comment: 7pages, 3 figures Submission to SciPost

We present an investigation of the structure of 13Be obtained via a kinematically complete measurement of the (p; pn) reaction in inverse kinematics at 265 MeV/nucleon. The relative energy spectrum of 13Be is compared to Transfer-to-the-Continuum calculations which use as structure inputs the overlaps of the 14Be ground-state wave function, computed in a three-body model, with the unbound states of the 13Be residual nucleus. The key role of neutron p-wave orbital in the interpretation of the low-relative-energy part of the spectrum is discussed.

We report first precision mass measurements of the $1/2^-$ isomeric and $9/2^+$ ground states of $^{101}$In. The determined isomeric excitation energy continues a smooth trend of odd-$A$ indium isotopes up to the immediate vicinity of $N=50$ magic number. This trend can be confirmed by dedicated shell model calculations only if the neutron configuration mixing is considered. We find that the single particle energies are different for different states of the same isotope. The presented configuration-dependent shell evolution, type II shell evolution, in odd-$A$ nuclei is discussed for the first time. Isochronous mass spectrometry has been applied in the storage ring CSRe to measure the masses of the neutron-rich $^{\operatorname{52-54}}$Sc and $^{54,56}$Ti nuclei. The new mass excess values $ME$($^{52}$Sc) $=$ $-40525(65)$ keV, $ME$($^{53}$Sc) $=$ $-38910(80)$ keV, and $ME$($^{54}$Sc) $=$ $-34485(360)$ keV, deviate from the Atomic Mass Evaluation 2012 by 2.3$\sigma$, 2.8$\sigma$, and 1.7$\sigma$, respectively. These large deviations significantly change the systematics of the two-neutron separation energies of scandium isotopes. The empirical shell gap extracted from our new experimental results shows a significant subshell closure at $N = 32$ in scandium, with a similar magnitude as in calcium. Moreover, we present $ab$ $initio$ calculations using the valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group based on two- and three-nucleon interactions from chiral effective field theory. The theoretical results confirm the existence of a substantial $N = 32$ shell gap in Sc and Ca with a decreasing trend towards lighter isotones, thus providing a consistent picture of the evolution of the $N = 32$ magic number from the $pf$ into the $sd$ shell., Comment: 6 pages, 5figures, accepted by Physical Review C

Isochronous Mass Spectrometry (IMS) in heavy-ion storage rings is an excellent experimental method for precision mass measurements of exotic nuclei. In the IMS, the storage ring is tuned in a special isochronous ion-optical mode. Thus, the mass-over-charge ratios of the stored ions are directly reflected by their respective revolution times in first order. However, the inevitable momentum spread of secondary ions increases the peak widths in the measured spectra and consequently limits the achieved mass precision. In order to achieve a higher mass resolving power, the ring aperture was reduced to 60 mm by applying a mechanical slit system at the dispersive straight section. The momentum acceptance was reduced as well as better isochronous conditions were achieved. The results showed a significant improvement of the mass resolving power reaching $5.2 \times 10^{5}$, though at the cost of about 40\% ion loss., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, proceeding of EMIS2018

The tetraneutron has been drawing the attention of the nuclear physics community for decades, but a firm conclusion on its existence and properties is still far from being reached despite many experimental and theoretical efforts. In the last two and a half decades ion storage rings have proven to be powerful tools for precision experiments with unstable nuclides in realm of nuclear structure and astrophysics. There are presently three storage ring facilities in the world at which experiments with stored radioactive ions are possible. These are the ESR in GSI, Darmstadt/Germany, the CSRe in IMP, Lanzhou/China, and the R3 storage ring in RIKEN, Saitama/Japan. In this work, an introduction to the facilities is given. Selected characteristic experimental results and their impact in nuclear physics and astrophysics are presented. Atomic masses of seven $T_z=-1$, $fp$-shell nuclei from $^{44}$V to $^{56}$Cu and two low-lying isomers, $^{44m}$V ($J^\pi=6^+$) and $^{52m}$Co ($J^\pi=2^+$), have been measured with relative precisions of $1-4\times 10^{-7}$ with Isochronous Mass Spectrometry (IMS) at CSRe. The masses of $^{56}$Cu, $^{52g,52m}$Co, and $^{44m}$V were measured for the first time in this experiment. The Mass Excesses ($ME^{\prime}$s) of $^{44}$V, $^{48}$Mn, $^{50}$Fe, and $^{54}$Ni are determined with an order of magnitude improved precision compared to the literature values. $^{52g,52m}$Co and $^{56}$Cu are found to be $370$~keV and $400$~keV more bound, respectively, while $^{44g,44m}$V are $\sim 300$~keV less bound than the extrapolations in the Atomic-Mass Evaluation 2012 (AME$^{\prime}$12). The masses of the four $T_z=-1/2$ nuclei $^{45}$V, $^{47}$Cr, $^{49}$Mn, and $^{51}$Fe are re-determined to be in agreement, within the experimental errors, with the recent JYFLTRAP measurements or with the previous IMS measurements in CSRe. Details of the measurements and data analysis are described, and the impact of the new $ME$ values on different aspects in nuclear structure are investigated and discussed., Comment: 16 pages, 15 figures
