Search

While stellar processes are believed to be the main source of feedback in dwarf galaxies, the accumulating discoveries of AGN in dwarf galaxies over recent years arouse the interest to also consider AGN feedback in them. Fast, AGN-driven outflows, a major mechanism of AGN feedback, have indeed been discovered in dwarf galaxies and may be powerful enough to provide feedback to their dwarf hosts. In this paper, we search for outflows traced by the blueshifted ultraviolet absorption features in three dwarf galaxies with AGN from the sample examined in our previous ground-based study. We confirm outflows traced by blueshifted absorption features in two objects and tentatively detect an outflow in the third object. In one object where the outflow is clearly detected in multiple species, photoionization modeling suggests that this outflow is located $\sim$0.5 kpc from the AGN, implying a galactic-scale impact. This outflow is much faster and possesses higher kinetic energy outflow rate than starburst-driven outflows in sources with similar star formation rates, and is likely energetic enough to provide negative feedback to its host galaxy as predicted by simulations. Much broader ($\sim$4000 km s$^{-1}$) absorption features are also discovered in this object which may have the same origin as that of broad absorption lines in quasars. Additionally, strong He II $\lambda$1640 emission is detected in both objects where the transition falls in the wavelength coverage, and is consistent with an AGN origin. We perform the first measurement of the thermal and ionization state of the intergalactic medium (IGM) across 0.9 < z < 1.5 using 301 \lya absorption lines fitted from 12 HST STIS quasar spectra, with a total pathlength of \Delta z=2.1. We employ the machine-learning-based inference method that uses joint b-N distributions obtained from \lyaf decomposition. Our results show that the HI photoionization rates, \Gamma, are in good agreement with the recent UV background synthesis models, with \log (\Gamma/s^{-1})={-11.79}^{0.18}_{-0.15}, -11.98}^{0.09}_{-0.09}, and {-12.32}^{0.10}_{-0.12} at z=1.4, 1.2, and 1 respectively. We obtain the IGM temperature at the mean density, T_0, and the adiabatic index, \gamma, as [\log (T_0/K), \gamma]= [{4.13}^{+0.12}_{-0.10}, {1.34}^{+0.10}_{-0.15}], [{3.79}^{+0.11}_{-0.11}, {1.70}^{+0.09}_{-0.09}] and [{4.12}^{+0.15}_{-0.25}, {1.34}^{+0.21}_{-0.26}] at z=1.4, 1.2 and 1 respectively. Our measurements of T_0 at z=1.4 and 1.2 are consistent with the expected trend from z<3 temperature measurements as well as theoretical expectations that, in the absence of any non-standard heating, the IGM should cool down after HeII reionization. Whereas, our T_0 measurements at z=1 show unexpectedly high IGM temperature. However, because of the relatively large uncertainty in these measurements of the order of \Delta T_0~5000 K, mostly emanating from the limited redshift path length of available data in these bins, we can not definitively conclude whether the IGM cools down at z<1.5. Lastly, we generate a mock dataset to test the constraining power of future measurement with larger datasets. The results demonstrate that, with redshift pathlength \Delta z \sim 2 for each redshift bin, three times the current dataset, we can constrain the T_0 of IGM within 1500K. Such precision would be sufficient to conclusively constrain the history of IGM thermal evolution at z < 1.5.

We combine datasets from the CGM$^{2}$ and CASBaH surveys to model a transition point, $R_{\rm cross}$, between circumgalactic and intergalactic media (CGM and IGM, respectively). In total, our data consist of 7244 galaxies at z < 0.5 with precisely measured spectroscopic redshifts, all having impact parameters of 0.01 - 20 comoving Mpc from 28 QSO sightlines with high-resolution UV spectra that cover H I Ly$\alpha$. Our best-fitting model is an exclusionary two-component model that combines a 3D absorber-galaxy cross correlation function with a simple Gaussian profile at inner radii to represent the CGM. By design, this model gives rise to a determination of $R_{\rm cross}$ as a function of galaxy stellar mass, which can be interpreted as the boundary between the CGM and IGM. For galaxies with $10^8 \leq M_{\star}/M_{\odot} \leq 10^{10.5}$, we find that $R_{\rm cross}(M_{\star}) \approx 2 \pm 0.6 R_{\rm vir}$. Additionally, we find excellent agreement between $R_{\rm cross}(M_{\star})$ and the theoretically-determined splashback radius for galaxies in this mass range. This study addresses how the incidence rate of strong O VI absorbers in a galaxy's circumgalactic medium (CGM) depends on galaxy mass and, independently, on the amount of star formation in the galaxy. We use HST/COS absorption spectroscopy of quasars to measure O VI absorption within 400 projected kpc and 300 km s$^{-1}$ of 52 $M_{*}\sim 10^{10}$ $M_\odot$ galaxies. This paper is the second in a series aimed at examining the gaseous environments of z$\le$0.3 quasars and ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) as a function of AGN/host galaxy properties across the merger sequence. This second paper focuses on the Ly$\alpha$ emission and O VI and N V absorption features, tracers of highly ionized gas outflows, in ULIRGs observed with HST/COS. Ly$\alpha$ emission is detected in 15 out of 19 ULIRGs, and 12 of the 14 clear Ly$\alpha$ detections show emission with blueshifted velocity centroids and/or wings. The equivalent widths of the Ly$\alpha$ emission increase with increasing AGN luminosities and AGN bolometric fractions. The blueshifts of the Ly$\alpha$ emission correlate positively with those of the [O III] emission, where the latter traces the ionized gas outflows. The Ly$\alpha$ escape fractions tend to be slightly larger in objects with stronger AGN and larger outflow velocities, but they do not correlate with nebular line reddening. Among the 12 ULIRGs with good continuum signal-to-noise ratios, O VI and/or N V absorption features are robustly detected in 6 of them, all of which are blueshifted, indicative of outflows. In the combined ULIRG $+$ quasar sample, the outflows are more frequently detected in the X-ray weak or absorbed sources. The absorption equivalent widths, velocities and velocity dispersions of the outflows are also higher in the X-ray weak sources. The bimodal absorption system imaging campaign (BASIC) aims to characterize the galaxy environments of a sample of 36 HI-selected partial Lyman limit systems (pLLSs) and Lyman limit systems (LLSs) in 23 QSO fields at $z \lesssim 1$. These pLLSs/LLSs provide a unique sample of absorbers with unbiased and well-constrained metallicities, allowing us to explore the origins of metal-rich and low-metallicity circumgalactic medium (CGM) at $z<1$. Here we present Keck/KCWI and VLT/MUSE observations of 11 of these QSO fields (19 pLLSs) that we combine with HST/ACS imaging to identify and characterize the absorber-associated galaxies. We find 23 unique absorber-associated galaxies, with an average of one associated galaxy per absorber. For seven absorbers, all with $<10\%$ solar metallicities, we find no associated galaxies with $\log M_\star \gtrsim 9.0$ within $\rho/R_{vir}$ and $|\Delta v|/v_{esc} \le$ 1.5 with respect to the absorber. We do not find any strong correlations between the metallicities or HI column densities of the gas and most of the galaxy properties, except for the stellar mass of the galaxies: the low-metallicity ([X/H] $\le -1.4$) systems have a probability of $0.39^{+0.16}_{-0.15}$ for having a host galaxy with $\log M_\star \ge 9.0$ within $\rho/R_{vir} \le 1.5$, while the higher metallicity absorbers have a probability of $0.78^{+0.10}_{-0.13}$. This implies metal-enriched pLLSs/LLSs at $z<1$ are typically associated with the CGM of galaxies with $\log M_\star > 9.0$, whereas low-metallicity pLLSs/LLSs are found in more diverse locations, with one population arising in the CGM of galaxies and another more broadly distributed in overdense regions of the universe. Using absorbers not associated with galaxies, we estimate the unweighted geometric mean metallicity of the intergalactic medium to be [X/H] $\lesssim -2.1$ at $z<1$, which is lower than previously estimated., Comment: Key figures: 13 and 18. The high-velocity clouds (HVCs) in the outer Milky Way at $20^{\circ} < l < 190^{\circ}$ have similar spatial locations, metallicities, and kinematics. Moreover, their locations and kinematics are coincident with several extraplanar stellar streams. The HVC origins may be connected to the stellar streams, either stripped directly from them or precipitated by the aggregate dynamical roiling of the region by the stream progenitors. This paper suggests that these HVCs are "misty" precipitation in the stream wakes based on the following observations. New high-resolution (2.6 km/s) ultraviolet spectroscopy of the QSO H1821+643 resolves what appears to be a single HVC absorption cloud (at 7 km/s resolution) into five components with $T \lesssim 3\times 10^{4}$ K. Photoionization models can explain the low-ionization components but require some depletion of refractory elements by dust, and model degeneracies allow a large range of metallicity. High-ionization absorption lines (SiIV, CIV, and OVI) are kinematically aligned with the lower-ionization lines and cannot be easily explained with photoionization or equilibrium collisional ionization; these lines are best matched by non-equilibrium rapidly cooling models, i.e., condensing/precipitating gas, with high metallicity and a significant amount of HI. Both the low- and high-ionization phases have low ratios of cooling time to freefall time and cooling time to sound-crossing time, which enables fragmentation and precipitation. The H1821+643 results are corroborated by spectroscopy of six other nearby targets that likewise show kinematically correlated low- and high-ionization absorption lines with evidence of dust depletion and rapid cooling., Comment: Published in MNRAS. This program is part of QUEST (Quasar/ULIRG Evolutionary Study) and seeks to examine the gaseous environments of z < 0.3 quasars and ULIRGs as a function of host galaxy properties and age across the merger sequence from ULIRGs to quasars. This first paper in the series focuses on 33 quasars from the QUEST sample and on the kinematics of the highly ionized gas phase traced by the N V 1238, 1243 A and O VI 1032, 1038 A absorption lines in high-quality Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) data. N V and O VI outflows are present in about 60% of the QUEST quasars and span a broad range of properties, both in terms of equivalent widths (from 20 mA to 25 A) and kinematics (outflow velocities from a few x 100 km/s up to ~10,000 km/s). The rate of incidence and equivalent widths of the highly ionized outflows are higher among X-ray weak or absorbed sources. The weighted outflow velocity dispersions are highest among the X-ray weakest sources. No significant trends are found between the weighted outflow velocities and the properties of the quasars and host galaxies although this may be due to the limited dynamic range of properties of the current sample. These results will be re-examined in an upcoming paper where the sample is expanded to include the QUEST ULIRGs. We present a study of metal-enriched halo gas traced by MgII and CIV absorption at z<2 in the MUSE Analysis of Gas around Galaxies survey and the Quasar Sightline and Galaxy Evolution survey. Using these large and complete galaxy surveys in quasar fields, we study the dependence of the metal distribution on galaxy properties and overdensities, out to physical projected separations of 750 kpc. We find that the cool, low-ionization gas is significantly affected by the environment across the full redshift range probed, with ~2-3 times more prevalent and stronger MgII absorption in higher overdensity group environments and in regions with greater overall stellar mass and star formation rates. Complementary to these results, we have further investigated the more highly ionized gas as traced by CIV absorption, and found that it is likely to be more extended than the MgII gas, with ~2 times higher covering fraction at a given distance. We find that the strength and covering fraction of CIV absorption show less significant dependence on galaxy properties and environment than the MgII absorption, but more massive and star-forming galaxies nevertheless also show ~2 times higher incidence of CIV absorption. The incidence of MgII and CIV absorption within the virial radius shows a tentative increase with redshift, being higher by a factor of ~1.5 and ~4, respectively, at z>1. It is clear from our results that environmental processes have a significant impact on the distribution of metals around galaxies and need to be fully accounted for when analyzing correlations between gaseous haloes and galaxy properties., Comment: 27 pages; accepted for publication in MNRAS

Interstellar thermal pressures can be measured using C I absorption lines that probe the pressure-sensitive populations of the fine-structure levels of its ground state. In a survey of C I absorption toward Galactic hot stars, Jenkins & Tripp (2011) found evidence of small amounts ($\sim 0.05\%$) of gas at high pressures ($p/k \gg 10^4{\rm cm^{-3}K}$) mixed with a more general presence of lower pressure material exhibiting a log normal distribution that spanned the range $10^3 \lesssim p/k \lesssim 10^4{\rm cm^{-3}K}$. In this paper, we study Milky Way C I lines in the spectra of extragalactic sources instead of Galactic stars and thus measure the pressures without being influenced by regions where stellar mass loss and H II region expansions could create localized pressure elevations. We find that the distribution of low pressures in the current sample favors slightly higher pressures than the earlier survey, and the fraction of gaseous material at extremely high pressures is about the same as that found earlier. Thus we conclude that the earlier survey was not appreciably influenced by the stellar environments, and the small amounts of high pressure gas indeed exist within the general interstellar medium., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

Quasar absorption systems encode a wealth of information about the abundances, ionization structure, and physical conditions in intergalactic and circumgalactic media. Simple (often single-phase) photoionization models are frequently used to decode such data. Using five discrete absorbers from the COS Absorption Survey of Baryon Harbors (CASBaH) that exhibit a wide range of detected ions (e.g., Mg II, S II--S VI, O II--O VI, Ne VIII), we show several examples where single-phase ionization models cannot reproduce the full set of measured column densities. To explore models that can self-consistently explain the measurements and kinematic alignment of disparate ions, we develop a Bayesian multiphase ionization modeling framework that characterizes discrete phases by their unique physical conditions and also investigates variations in the shape of the UV flux field, metallicity, and relative abundances. Our models require at least two (but favor three) distinct ionization phases ranging from $T \approx 10^{4}$ K photoionized gas to warm-hot phases at $T \lesssim 10^{5.8}$ K. For some ions, an apparently single absorption "component" includes contributions from more than one phase, and up to 30% of the H I is not from the lowest ionization phase. If we assume that all of the phases are photoionized, we cannot find solutions in thermal pressure equilibrium. By introducing hotter, collisionally ionized phases, however, we can achieve balanced pressures. The best models indicate moderate metallicities, often with sub-solar N/$\alpha$, and, in two cases, ionizing flux fields that are softer and brighter than the fiducial Haardt & Madau UV background model., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present initial results from the \textit{COS and Gemini Mapping the Circumgalactic Medium} (\mbox{CGMCGM} $\equiv$ CGM$^{2}$) survey. The CGM$^{2}$ survey consists of 1689 galaxies, all with high-quality Gemini GMOS spectra, within 1 Mpc of twenty-two $z \lesssim 1$ quasars, all with S/N$\sim$10 {\emph{HST/COS}} G130M$+$G160M spectra. For 572 of these galaxies having stellar masses $10^{7} M_{\odot} < M_{\star} < 10^{11} M_{\odot}$ and $z \lesssim 0.5$, we show that the \ion{H}{1} covering fraction above a threshold of \NHI$>10^{14} $cm$^{-2}$ is $\gtrsim 0.5$ within 1.5 virial radii ($R_{\rm vir} \sim R_{200m}$). We examine the \ion{H}{1} kinematics and find that the majority of absorption lies within $\pm$ 250 km s$^{-1}$ of the galaxy systemic velocity. We examine \ion{H}{1} covering fractions over a range of impact parameters to infer a characteristic size of the CGM, $R^{14}_{\rm CGM}$, as a function of galaxy mass. $R^{14}_{\rm CGM}$ is the impact parameter at which the probability of observing an absorber with \NHI $>$ 10$^{14}$ cm$^{-2}$ is $>$ 50\%. In this framework, the radial extent of the CGM of $M_{\star} > 10^{9.9} M_{\odot}$ galaxies is $R^{14}_{\rm CGM} = 346^{+57}_{-53}$ kpc or $R^{14}_{\rm CGM} \simeq 1.2R_{\rm vir}$. Intermediate-mass galaxies with $10^{9.2} < M_{\star}/M_{\odot} < 10^{9.9}$ have an extent of $R^{14}_{\rm CGM} = 353^{+64}_{-50}$ kpc or $R^{14}_{\rm CGM} \simeq 2.4R_{\rm vir}$. Low-mass galaxies, $M_{\star} < 10^{9.2} M_{\odot}$, show a smaller physical scale $R^{14}_{\rm CGM} = 177_{-65}^{+70}$ kpc and extend to $R^{14}_{\rm CGM} \simeq 1.6R_{\rm vir}$. Our analysis suggests that using $R_{\rm vir}$ as a proxy for the characteristic radius of the CGM likely underestimates its extent., Comment: 30 pages, 14 figures. We present an HST Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) spectrum of the QSO SDSS J095109.12+330745.8 ($z_{em} = 0.645$) whose sightline passes through the SMC-like dwarf galaxy UGC 5282 ($M_B = -16.0$, $cz = 1577$ km s$^{-1}$ ), 1.2 kpc in projection from the central HII region of the galaxy. Damped Ly$\alpha$ (DLA) absorption is detected at the redshift of UGC 5282 with $\log$[$N$(HI) cm$^{-2}\:$] = 20.89$^{+0.12}_{-0.21}\:\:$. Analysis of the accompanying SII, PII and OI metal lines yields a neutral gas metallicity, $Z_{HI}$, of [S/H] $\simeq$ [P/H] $= -0.80\pm0.24$. The metallicity of ionized gas from the central HII region, $Z_{HII}\:$, measured from its emission lines is [O/H]$= -0.37\pm0.10$, a difference of $+0.43\pm 0.26$ from $Z_{HI}\:$. This difference $\delta$ is consistent with that seen towards HII regions in other star-forming galaxies and supports the idea that ionized gas near star forming regions shows systematically higher metallicities than exist in the rest of a galaxy's neutral interstellar medium (ISM). The positive values of $\delta$ found in UGC 5282 (and the other star forming galaxies) is likely due to infalling low metallicity gas from the intergalactic medium that mixes with the galaxy's ISM on kpc scales. This model is also consistent with broad Ly$\alpha$ emission detected at the bottom of the DLA absorption, offset by $\sim 125$ km s$^{-1}$ from the absorption velocity. Models of galaxy evolution that attempt to replicate population characteristics, such as the mass-metallicity relation, may need to start with a galaxy metallicity represented by $Z_{HI}$ rather than that measured traditionally from $Z_{HII}\:$., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. Modern cosmology predicts that matter in our Universe has assembled today into a vast network of filamentary structures colloquially termed the Cosmic Web. Because this matter is either electromagnetically invisible (i.e., dark) or too diffuse to image in emission, tests of this cosmic web paradigm are limited. Wide-field surveys do reveal web-like structures in the galaxy distribution, but these luminous galaxies represent less than 10% of baryonic matter. Statistics of absorption by the intergalactic medium (IGM) via spectroscopy of distant quasars support the model yet have not conclusively tied the diffuse IGM to the web. Here, we report on a new method inspired by the Physarum polycephalum slime mold that is able to infer the density field of the Cosmic Web from galaxy surveys. Applying our technique to galaxy and absorption-line surveys of the local Universe, we demonstrate that the bulk of the IGM indeed resides in the Cosmic Web. From the outskirts of Cosmic Web filaments, at approximately the cosmic mean matter density (rho_m) and approx. 5 virial radii from nearby galaxies, we detect an increasing H I absorption signature towards higher densities and the circumgalactic medium, to approx. 200 rho_m. We describe the survey for galaxies in the fields surrounding 9 sightlines to far-UV bright, z~1 quasars that define the COS Absorption Survey of Baryon Harbors (CASBaH) program. The photometry and spectroscopy that comprise the dataset come from a mixture of public surveys (SDSS, DECaLS) and our dedicated efforts on private facilities (Keck, MMT, LBT). We report the redshifts and stellar masses for 5902 galaxies within ~10 comoving-Mpc (cMpc) of the sightlines with a median of z=0.28 and M_* ~ 10^(10.1) Msun. This dataset, publicly available as the CASBaH specDB, forms the basis of several recent and ongoing CASBaH analyses. Here, we perform a clustering analysis of the galaxy sample with itself (auto-correlation) and against the set of OVI absorption systems (cross-correlation) discovered in the CASBaH quasar spectra with column densities N(O^+5) >= 10^(13.5)/cm^2. For each, we describe the measured clustering signal with a power-law correlation function xi(r) = (r/r_0)^(-gamma) and find that (r_0,gamma) = (5.48 +/- 0.07 h_100^-1 Mpc, 1.33 +/- 0.04) for the auto-correlation and (6.00 +/- 1 h^-1 Mpc, 1.25 +/- 0.18) for galaxy-OVI cross-correlation. We further estimate a bias factor of b_gg = 1.3 +/- 0.1 from the galaxy-galaxy auto-correlation indicating the galaxies are hosted by halos with mass M_halo ~ 10^(12.1 +/- 0.05) Msun. Finally, we estimate an OVI-galaxy bias factor b_OVI = 1.0 +/- 0.1 from the cross-correlation which is consistent with OVI absorbers being hosted by dark matter halos with typical mass M_halo ~ 10^(11) Msun. Future works with upcoming datasets (e.g., CGM^2) will improve upon these results and will assess whether any of the detected OVI arises in the intergalactic medium., Comment: 25 pages, 27 figures. Quasar outflows are fundamental components of quasar environments that might play an important role in feedback to galaxy evolution. We report on the emergence of a remarkable new outflow absorption-line system in the quasar PG1411+442 (redshift ~0.089) detected in the UV and visible with the Hubble Space Telescope Cosmic Origins Spectrograph and the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph, respectively. This new "transient'' system contains thousands of lines, including FeII and FeII* from excited states up to 3.89 eV, HI* Balmer lines, NaI D 5890,5896, and the first detection of HeI* 5876 in a quasar. The transient absorber is spatially inhomogeneous and compact, with sizes ~<0.003 pc, based on covering fractions on the quasar continuum source ranging from ~0.45 in strong UV lines to ~0.04 in NaI D. Cloudy photoionization simulations show that large total column densities log N_H(cm^-2) >~ 23.4 and an intense radiation field ~<0.4~pc from the quasar are needed to produce the observed lines in thick zones of both fully-ionised and partially-ionised gas. The densities are conservatively log n_H(cm-3) >~ 7 based on FeII*, HI*, and HeI* but they might reach log n_H(cm^-3) >~ 10 based on NaI D. The transient lines appear at roughly the same velocity shift, v ~ -1900 km/s, as a "mini-BAL'' outflow detected previously, but with narrower Doppler widths, b ~ 100 km/s, and larger column densities in more compact outflow structures. We propose that the transient lines identify a clumpy outflow from the broad emission-line region that, at its current speed and location, is still gravitationally bound to the central black hole., Comment: 21 pages, submitted to MNRAS

Galaxies evolve under the influence of gas flows between their interstellar medium and their surrounding gaseous halos known as the circumgalactic medium (CGM). The CGM is a major reservoir of galactic baryons and metals, and plays a key role in the long cycles of accretion, feedback, and recycling of gas that drive star formation. In order to fully understand the physical processes at work within galaxies, it is therefore essential to have a firm understanding of the composition, structure, kinematics, thermodynamics, and evolution of the CGM. In this white paper we outline connections between the CGM and galactic star formation histories, internal kinematics, chemical evolution, quenching, satellite evolution, dark matter halo occupation, and the reionization of the larger-scale intergalactic medium in light of the advances that will be made on these topics in the 2020s. We argue that, in the next decade, fundamental progress on all of these major issues depends critically on improved empirical characterization and theoretical understanding of the CGM. In particular, we discuss how future advances in spatially-resolved CGM observations at high spectral resolution, broader characterization of the CGM across galaxy mass and redshift, and expected breakthroughs in cosmological hydrodynamic simulations will help resolve these major problems in galaxy evolution., Comment: Astro2020 Decadal Science White Paper

Using Hubble Space Telescope/Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph G140M spectroscopy, we investigate an absorption-line system at $z$=0.07489 in the spectrum of the quasi-stellar object PG 1543+489 ($z_{QSO}$=0.401). The sightline passes within $\rho = 66$ kpc of an edge-on $2L^*$ disk galaxy at a similar redshift, but the galaxy belongs to a group with four other galaxies within $\rho =160$ kpc. We detect H I [log $N$(H I/$cm^{-2}$) = 19.12$\pm$0.04] as well as N I, Mg II, Si II, and Si III, from which we measure a gas-phase abundance of [N/H] = $-1.0\pm 0.1$. Photoionization models indicate that the nitrogen-to-silicon relative abundance is solar, yet magnesium is underabundant by a factor of $\approx$ 2. We also report spatially resolved emission-line spectroscopy of the nearby galaxy, and we extract its rotation curve. The galaxy's metallicity is $\approx 8 \times$ higher than [N/H] in the absorber, and interestingly, the absorber velocities suggest that the gas at $\rho =$ 66 kpc is corotating with the galaxy's stellar disk, possibly with an inflow component. These characteristics could indicate that this sub-damped Ly$\alpha$ absorber system arises in a "cold-accretion" flow. However, the absorber abundance patterns are peculiar. We hypothesize that the gas was ejected from its galaxy of origin (or perhaps is a result of tidal debris from interactions between the group galaxies) with a solar nitrogen abundance, but that subsequently mixed with (and was diluted by) gas in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) or group. If the gas is bound to the nearby galaxy, this system may be an example of the gas "recycling" predicted by theoretical galaxy simulations. We survey the highly ionized circumgalactic media (CGM) of 29 blindly selected galaxies at 0.49 < z_(gal) < 1.44 based on high-S/N ultraviolet spectra of z > 1 QSOs and the galaxy database from the COS Absorption Survey of Baryon Harbors (CASBaH). We detect the Ne VIII doublet in nine of the galaxies, and for gas with N(Ne VIII) > 10^13.3 cm^-2 (> 10^13.5 cm^-2), we derive a Ne VIII covering fraction f_c = 75 +15/-25% (44 +22/-20%) within impact parameter (rho) < 200 kpc of M_* = 10^(9.5-11.5) Msol galaxies and f_c = 70 +16/-22% (f_c = 42 +20/-17%) within rho < 1.5 virial radii. We estimate the mass in Ne VIII-traced gas to be M_gas(Ne VIII) > 10^9.5 Msol (Z/Zsol)^-1, or 6-20% of the expected baryonic mass if the Ne VIII absorbers have solar metallicity. Ionizing Ne VII to Ne VIII requires 207 eV, and photons with this energy are scarce in the CGM. However, for the median halo mass and redshift of our sample, the virial temperature is close to the peak temperature for the Ne VIII ion, and the Ne VIII-bearing gas is plausibly collisionally ionized near this temperature. Moreover, we find that photoionized Ne VIII requires cool and low-density clouds that would be highly underpressured (by approximately two orders of magnitude) relative to the putative, ambient virialized medium, complicating scenarios where such clouds could survive. Thus, more complex (e.g., non-equilibrium) models may be required; this first statistical sample of Ne VIII absorber/galaxy systems will provide stringent constraints for future CGM studies., Comment: Published in ApJL, Volume 877, Issue 2, Article L20

We have initiated a programme to study the physical/dynamical state of gas in galaxy clusters and the impact of the cluster environment on gaseous halos of individual galaxies using X-ray imaging and UV absorption line spectroscopy of background QSOs. Here we report results from the analysis Chandra and XMM-Newton archival data of five galaxy clusters with such QSOs, one of which has an archival UV spectrum. We characterize the gravitational masses and dynamical states, as well as the hot intracluster medium (ICM) properties of these clusters. Most clusters are dynamically disturbed clusters based on the X-ray morphology parameters, the X-ray temperature profiles, the large offset between X-ray peak and brightest cluster galaxy (BCG). The baryon contents in the hot ICM and stars of these clusters within $r_{500}$ are lower than the values expected from the gravitational masses, according to the standard cosmology. We also estimate column densities of the hot ICM along the sightlines toward the background QSOs as well as place upper limits on the warm-hot phase for the one sightline with existing UV observations. These column densities, compared with those of the warm and warm-hot ICM to be measured with UV absorption line spectroscopy, will enable us to probe the relationship among various gaseous phases and their connection to the heating/cooling and dynamical processes of the clusters. We present new measurements of the flux power-spectrum P(k) of the $z<0.5$ HI Lyman-$\alpha$ forest spanning scales k ~ 0.001-0.1 s/km. These results were derived from 65 far ultraviolet quasar spectra (resolution R~18000) observed with the Cosmic Origin Spectrograph (COS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope. The analysis required careful masking of all contaminating, coincident absorption from HI and metal-line transitions of the Galactic interstellar medium and intervening absorbers as well as proper treatment of the complex COS line-spread function. From the P(k) measurements, we estimate the HI photoionization rate ($\Gamma_{\rm HI}$) in the z<0.5 intergalactic medium. Our results confirm most of the previous $\Gamma_{\rm HI}$ estimates. We conclude that previous concerns of a photon underproduction crisis are now resolved by demonstrating that the measured $\Gamma_{\rm HI}$ can be accounted for by ultraviolet emission from quasars alone. We analyze the equivalent widths of HI Ly-$\alpha$ ($W_{Ly\alpha}$) absorption from the inner (R < 160 kpc) circumgalactic medium (CGM) of 85 galaxies at $z \sim 0$ with stellar masses $M*$ ranging $\rm{8 \leq log M* / M_{\odot} \leq 11.6}$. Across three orders of magnitude in stellar mass, the CGM of present-day galaxies exhibits a very high covering fraction of cool hydrogen gas ($f_C = 87\pm 4$\%) indicating that the CGM is ubiquitous in modern, isolated galaxies. When HI Ly-$\alpha$ is detected, its equivalent width declines with increasing radius regardless of the galaxy mass, but the scatter in this trend correlates closely with $M*$. Using the radial and stellar mass correlations, we construct a planar surface describing the cool CGM of modern galaxies: $\log W^{\rm{s}}_{HI 1215} \; = \; (0.34 \pm 0.02) -( 0.0026 \pm 0.0005)\times (R) + (0.286 \pm 0.002) \times \log (M*/M_{\odot})$. The RMS scatter around this bivariate relation is $\sim$0.2 dex. We interpret the explicit correlation between $W_{Ly\alpha}$ and $M*$ to arise from the underlying dark matter halo mass ($M_{halo}$), thereby suggesting a CGM fundamental plane between $W_{Ly\alpha}$, $R$ and $M_{halo}$. We analyze the intracluster medium (ICM) and circumgalactic medium (CGM) in 7 X-ray detected galaxy clusters using spectra of background QSOs (HST-COS/STIS), optical spectroscopy of the cluster galaxies (MMT/Hectospec and SDSS), and X-ray imaging/spectroscopy (XMM-Newton and Chandra). First, we report a very low covering fraction of H I absorption in the CGM of these cluster galaxies, f_c = 25% +25%/-15%, to stringent detection limits (log N(H I) < 13 cm^-2). As field galaxies have an H I covering fraction of ~100% at similar radii, the dearth of CGM H I in our data indicates that the cluster environment has effectively stripped or overionized the gaseous halos of these cluster galaxies. Second, we assess the contribution of warm-hot (10^5 - 10^6 K) gas to the ICM as traced by O VI and broad Ly-alpha (BLA) absorption. Despite the high signal-to-noise of our data, we do not detect O VI in any cluster, and we only detect BLA features in the QSO spectrum probing one cluster. We estimate that the total column density of warm-hot gas along this line of sight totals to ~3% of that contained in the hot T > 10^7 K X-ray emitting phase. Residing at high relative velocities, these features may trace pre-shocked material outside the cluster. Comparing gaseous galaxy halos from the low-density 'field' to galaxy groups and high-density clusters, we find that the CGM is progressively depleted of H I with increasing environmental density, and the CGM is most severely transformed in galaxy clusters. We analyze new far-ultraviolet spectra of 13 quasars from the z~0.2 COS-Halos survey that cover the HI Lyman limit of 14 circumgalactic medium (CGM) systems. These data yield precise estimates or more constraining limits than previous COS-Halos measurements on the HI column densities NHI. We then apply a Monte-Carlo Markov Chain approach on 32 systems from COS-Halos to estimate the metallicity of the cool (T~10^4K) CGM gas that gives rise to low-ionization state metal lines, under the assumption of photoionization equilibrium with the extragalactic UV background. The principle results are: (1) the CGM of field L* galaxies exhibits a declining HI surface density with impact parameter Rperp (at >99.5%$ confidence), (2) the transmission of ionizing radiation through CGM gas alone is 70+/-7%; (3) the metallicity distribution function of the cool CGM is unimodal with a median of 1/3 Z_Sun and a 95% interval from ~1/50 Z_Sun to over 3x solar. The incidence of metal poor (<1/100 Z_Sun) gas is low, implying any such gas discovered along quasar sightlines is typically unrelated to L* galaxies; (4) we find an unexpected increase in gas metallicity with declining NHI (at >99.9% confidence) and, therefore, also with increasing Rperp. The high metallicity at large radii implies early enrichment; (5) A non-parametric estimate of the cool CGM gas mass is M_CGM_cool = 9.2 +/- 4.3 10^10 Msun, which together with new mass estimates for the hot CGM may resolve the galactic missing baryons problem. Future analyses of halo gas should focus on the underlying astrophysics governing the CGM, rather than processes that simply expel the medium from the halo., Comment: 26 pages with figures. The total contribution of diffuse halo gas to the galaxy baryon budget strongly depends on its dominant ionization state. In this paper, we address the physical conditions in the highly ionized circumgalactic medium (CGM) traced by OVI absorption lines observed in COS-Halos spectra. We analyze the observed ionic column densities, absorption-line widths and relative velocities, along with the ratios of NV/OVI for 39 fitted Voigt profile components of OVI. We compare these quantities with the predictions given by a wide range of ionization models. Photoionization models that include only extragalactic UV background radiation are ruled out; conservatively, the upper limits to NV/OVI and measurements of N$_{\rm OVI}$ imply unphysically large path lengths > 100 kpc. Furthermore, very broad OVI absorption (b > 40 km s$^{-1}$) is a defining characteristic of the CGM of star-forming L* galaxies. We highlight two possible origins for the bulk of the observed OVI: (1) highly structured gas clouds photoionized primarily by local high energy sources or (2) gas radiatively cooling on large scales behind a supersonic wind. Approximately 20% of circumgalactic OVI does not align with any low-ionization state gas within $\pm$50 km s$^{-1}$ and is found only in halos with M$_{\rm halo}$ < 10$^{12}$ M$_{\odot}$. We suggest that this type of unmatched OVI absorption traces the hot corona itself at a characteristic temperature of 10$^{5.5}$ K. We have initiated a program to study the baryon content and dynamic state of galaxy clusters. Here we present results primarily from XMM-Newton observations of two optically-selected galaxy clusters, A1095 ($z \simeq 0.210$) and A1926 ($z \simeq 0.136$). We find that both of them are actually cluster pairs at similar redshifts. We characterize the temperatures of these individual clusters through X-ray spectral fits and then estimate their gravitational masses. We show a rich set of substructures, including large position offsets between the diffuse X-ray centroids and the brightest galaxies of the clusters, which suggests that they are dynamically young. For both A1095 and A1926, we find that the mass required for the cluster pairs to be bound is smaller than the total gravitational mass. Thus both cluster pairs appear to be ongoing major mergers. Incorporating SDSS and NVSS/FIRST data, we further examine the large-scale structure environment and radio emission of the clusters to probe their origins, which also leads to the discovery of two additional X-ray-emitting clusters ($z \simeq 0.097$ and $z \simeq 0.147$) in the field of A1926. We estimate the hot gas and stellar masses of each cluster, which compared with the expected cosmological baryonic mass fraction, leave ample room for warm gas., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures, MNRAS accepted

Using Hubble Space Telescope Cosmic Origins Spectrograph observations of 89 QSO sightlines through the Sloan Digital Sky Survey footprint, we study the relationships between C IV absorption systems and the properties of nearby galaxies as well as large-scale environment. To maintain sensitivity to very faint galaxies, we restrict our sample to 0.0015 < z < 0.015, which defines a complete galaxy survey to L > 0.01 L* or stellar mass log M_* > 8 Msun. We report two principal findings. First, for galaxies with impact parameter rho < 1 rvir, C IV detection strongly depends on the luminosity/stellar mass of the nearby galaxy. C IV is preferentially associated with galaxies with log M_* > 9.5 Msun; lower mass galaxies rarely exhibit significant C IV absorption (covering fraction f = 9 +12-6% for 11 galaxies with log M_* < 9.5 Msun). Second, C IV detection within the log M_* > 9.5 Msun population depends on environment. Using a fixed-aperture environmental density metric for galaxies with rho < 160 kpc at z < 0.055, we find that 57+/-12% (8/14) of galaxies in low-density regions (regions with fewer than seven L > 0.15 L* galaxies within 1.5 Mpc) have affiliated C IV absorption; however, none (0/7) of the galaxies in denser regions show C IV. Similarly, the C IV detection rate is lower for galaxies residing in groups with dark-matter halo masses of log Mhalo > 12.5 Msun. In contrast to C IV, H I is pervasive in the CGM without regard to mass or environment. These results indicate that C IV absorbers with log N(C IV) > 13.5 cm^-2 trace the halos of log M_* > 9.5 Msun galaxies but also reflect larger scale environmental conditions., Comment: 26 pages, 13 figures. To investigate the evolution of metal-enriched gas over recent cosmic epochs as well as to characterize the diffuse, ionized, metal-enriched circumgalactic medium (CGM), we have conducted a blind survey for C IV absorption systems in 89 QSO sightlines observed with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS). We have identified 42 absorbers at z < 0.16, comprising the largest uniform blind sample size to date in this redshift range. Our measurements indicate an increasing C IV absorber number density per comoving path length (dN/dX = 7.5 +/- 1.1) and modestly increasing mass density relative to the critical density of the Universe (Omega(C IV) = 10.0 +/- 1.5 x 10^-8 ) from z ~ 1.5 to the present epoch, consistent with predictions from cosmological hydrodynamical simulations. Furthermore, the data support a functional form for the column density distribution function that deviates from a single power-law, also consistent with independent theoretical predictions. As the data also probe heavy element ions in addition to C IV at the same redshifts, we identify, measure, and search for correlations between column densities of these species where components appear aligned in velocity. Among these ion-ion correlations, we find evidence for tight correlations between C II and Si II, C II and Si III, and C IV and Si IV, suggesting that these pairs of species arise in similar ionization conditions. However, the evidence for correlations decreases as the difference in ionization potential increases. Finally, when controlling for observational bias, we find only marginal evidence for a correlation (86.8% likelihood) between the Doppler line width b(C IV) and column density N(C IV)., Comment: 32 pages, 18 figures, 4 tables. We present high-resolution HI 21 cm observations with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) for three HI rich galaxies in absorption against radio quasars. Our sample contains six sightlines with impact parameters from 2.6 to 32.4 kpc. We detected a narrow HI absorber of FWHM 1.1 km/s at 444.5 km/s towards J122106.854+454852.16 probing the dwarf galaxy UCG 7408 at an impact parameter of 2.8 kpc. The absorption feature was barely resolved and its width corresponds to a maximum kinetic temperature, $\rm T_k \approx 26~K$. We estimate a limiting peak optical depth of 1.37 and a column density of $\rm 6\times 10^{19}~cm^{-2}$. The physical extent of the absorber is $\rm 0.04~kpc^2$ and covers $\sim$25-30\% of the background source. A comparison between the emission and absorption strengths suggests the cold-to-total HI column density in the absorber is ~30%. Folding in the covering fraction, the cold-to-total HI mass is ~10%. This suggest that condensation of warm HI ($\rm T_s\sim 1000~K$) to cold phase ($\rm T_s < 100~K$) is suppressed in UGC 7408. The unusually low temperature of the HI absorber also indicates inefficiency in condensation of atomic gas into molecular gas. The suppression in condensation is likely to be the result of low-metal content in this galaxy. The same process might explain the low efficiency of star formation in dwarf galaxies despite their huge of gas reservoirs. We also report the non-detection of HI in absorption in five other sightlines. We report new observations of circumgalactic gas from the COS-Dwarfs survey, a systematic investigation of the gaseous halos around 43 low-mass z $\leq$ 0.1 galaxies using background QSOs observed with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph. From the projected 1D and 2D distribution of C IV absorption, we find that C IV absorption is detected out to ~ 0.5 R$_{vir}$ of the host galaxies. The C IV absorption strength falls off radially as a power law and beyond 0.5 R$_{vir}$, no C IV absorption is detected above our sensitivity limit of ~ 50-100 m$\AA$. We find a tentative correlation between detected C IV absorption strength and star formation, paralleling the strong correlation seen in highly ionized oxygen for L~L* galaxies by the COS-Halos survey. The data imply a large carbon reservoir in the CGM of these galaxies, corresponding to a minimum carbon mass of $\gtrsim$ 1.2$\times 10^6$ $M_\odot$ out to ~ 110 kpc. This mass is comparable to the carbon mass in the ISM and more than the carbon mass currently in stars of these galaxies. The C IV absorption seen around these sub-L* galaxies can account for almost two-thirds of all $W_r$> 100 m$\AA$ C IV absorption detected at low z. Comparing the C IV covering fraction with hydrodynamical simulations, we find that an energy-driven wind model is consistent with the observations whereas a wind model of constant velocity fails to reproduce the CGM or the galaxy properties., Comment: 18 Pages, 11 Figures, ApJ 796 136

We analyze the physical conditions of the cool, photoionized (T $\sim 10^4$ K) circumgalactic medium (CGM) using the COS-Halos suite of gas column density measurements for 44 gaseous halos within 160 kpc of $L \sim L^*$ galaxies at $z \sim 0.2$. These data are well described by simple photoionization models, with the gas highly ionized (n$_{\rm HII}$/n$_{\rm H} \gtrsim 99\%$) by the extragalactic ultraviolet background (EUVB). Scaling by estimates for the virial radius, R$_{\rm vir}$, we show that the ionization state (tracked by the dimensionless ionization parameter, U) increases with distance from the host galaxy. The ionization parameters imply a decreasing volume density profile n$_{\rm H}$ = (10$^{-4.2 \pm 0.25}$)(R/R$_{\rm vir})^{-0.8\pm0.3}$. Our derived gas volume densities are several orders of magnitude lower than predictions from standard two-phase models with a cool medium in pressure equilibrium with a hot, coronal medium expected in virialized halos at this mass scale. Applying the ionization corrections to the HI column densities, we estimate a lower limit to the cool gas mass M$_{\rm CGM}^{\rm cool} > 6.5 \times 10^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$ for the volume within R $<$ R$_{\rm vir}$. Allowing for an additional warm-hot, OVI-traced phase, the CGM accounts for at least half of the baryons purported to be missing from dark matter halos at the 10$^{12}$ M$_{\odot}$ scale., Comment: 19 pages, 12 Figures, and a 37-page Appendix with 36 additional figures. We report the discovery of a transparent sightline at projected distances of {\rho} < 20 kpc to an interacting pair of mature galaxies at z = 0.12. The sightline of the UV-bright quasar PG1522+101 at z = 1.328 passes at {\rho} = 11.5 kpc from the higher-mass galaxy (M_* = 10^10.6 M_Sun) and {\rho} = 20.4 kpc from the lower-mass one (M_* = 10^10.0 M_Sun). The two galaxies are separated by 9 kpc in projected distance and 30 km/s in line-of-sight velocity. Deep optical images reveal tidal features indicative of close interactions. Despite the small projected distances, the quasar sightline shows little absorption associated with the galaxy pair with a total HI column density it no greater than log N(HI) = 13.65. This limiting HI column density is already two orders-of-magnitude less than what is expected from previous halo gas studies. In addition, we detect no heavy-element absorption features associated with the galaxy pair with 3-{\sigma} limits of log N(MgII) < 12.2 and log N(OVI) < 13.7. The probability of seeing such little absorption in a sightline passing at a small projected distance from two non-interacting galaxies is 0.2%. The absence of strong absorbers near the close galaxy pair suggests that the cool gas reservoirs of the galaxies have been significantly depleted by the galaxy interaction. Studies of QSO absorber-galaxy connections are often hindered by inadequate information on whether faint/dwarf galaxies are located near the QSO sight lines. To investigate the contribution of faint galaxies to QSO absorber populations, we are conducting a deep galaxy redshift survey near low-z C IV absorbers. Here we report a blindly-detected C IV absorption system (z(abs) = 0.00348) in the spectrum of PG1148+549 that appears to be associated either with an edge-on dwarf galaxy with an obvious disk (UGC 6894, z(gal) = 0.00283) at an impact parameter of rho = 190 kpc or with a very faint dwarf irregular galaxy at rho = 23 kpc, which is closer to the sightline but has a larger redshift difference (z(gal) = 0.00107, i.e., dv = 724 km/s). We consider various gas/galaxy associations, including infall and outflows. Based on current theoretical models, we conclude that the absorber is most likely tracing (1) the remnants of an outflow from a previous epoch, a so-called 'ancient outflow', or (2) intergalactic gas accreting onto UGC 6894, 'cold mode' accretion. The latter scenario is supported by H I synthesis imaging data that shows the rotation curve of the disk being codirectional with the velocity offset between UGC 6894 and the absorber, which is located almost directly along the major axis of the edge-on disk., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures; accepted for publication in ApJL

We study the high-ionization phase and kinematics of the circumgalactic medium around low-redshift galaxies using a sample of 23 Lyman Limit Systems (LLSs) at 0.08

We present a census of z(abs) < 2, intrinsic (those showing partial coverage) and associated [z(abs) ~ z(em)] quasar absorption-line systems detected in the Hubble Space Telescope archive of Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph echelle spectra. This work complements the Misawa et al. (2007) survey of 2 < z(em) < 4 quasars that selects systems using similar techniques. We confirm the existence of so-called "strong N V" intrinsic systems (where the equivalent width of H I Ly alpha is small compared to N V 1238) presented in that work, but find no convincing cases of "strong C IV" intrinsic systems at low redshift/luminosity. Moreover, we also report on the existence of "strong O VI" systems. From a comparison of partial coverage results as a function of ion, we conclude that systems selected by the N V ion have the highest probability of being intrinsic. By contrast, the C IV and O VI ions are poor selectors. Of the 30 O VI systems tested, only two of the systems in the spectrum on 3C 351 show convincing evidence for partial coverage. However, there is a 3-sigma excess in the number of absorbers near the quasar redshift (|Delta v| <= 5000 km/s) over absorbers at large redshift differences. We report new observations of circumgalactic gas in the halos of early type galaxies obtained by the COS-Halos Survey with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph onboard the Hubble Space Telescope. We find that detections of HI surrounding early type galaxies are typically as common and strong as around star-forming galaxies, implying that the total mass of circumgalactic material is comparable in the two populations. For early type galaxies, the covering fraction for HI absorption above 10^16 cm^2 is ~40-50% within ~150 kpc. Line widths and kinematics of the detected material show it to be cold (T ~< 10^5 K) in comparison to the virial temperature of the host halos. The implied masses of cool, photoionized CGM baryons may be up to 10^9 --- 10^11 Msun. Contrary to some theoretical expectations, strong halo HI absorbers do not disappear as part of the quenching of star-formation. Even passive galaxies retain significant reservoirs of halo baryons which could replenish the interstellar gas reservoir and eventually form stars. Using high resolution, high signal-to-noise ultraviolet spectra of the z = 0.9754 quasar PG1148+549 obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on the Hubble Space Telescope, we study the physical conditions and abundances of NeVIII+OVI absorption line systems at z(abs) =0.68381, 0.70152, 0.72478. In addition to NeVIII and OVI, absorption lines from multiple ionization stages of oxygen (OII, OIII, OIV) are detected and are well-aligned with the more highly ionized species. We show that these absorbers are multiphase systems including hot gas (T ~ 10^{5.7} K) that produces NeVIII and OVI, and the gas metallicity of the cool phase ranges from Z = 0.3 Z_{solar} to supersolar. The cool (~10^{4} K) phases have densities n_{H} ~ 10^{-4} cm^{-3} and small sizes (< 4kpc); these cool clouds are likely to expand and dissipate, and the NeVIII may be within a transition layer between the cool gas and a surrounding, much hotter medium. The NeVIII redshift density, dN/dz = 7^{+7}_{-3}, requires a large number of these clouds for every L > 0.1L* galaxy and a large effective absorption cross section (>~ 100 kpc), and indeed, we find a star forming ~L* galaxy at the redshift of the z(abs)=0.72478 system, at an impact parameter of 217 kpc. The circumgalactic medium (CGM) is fed by galaxy outflows and accretion of intergalactic gas, but its mass, heavy element enrichment, and relation to galaxy properties are poorly constrained by observations. In a survey of the outskirts of 42 galaxies with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph onboard the Hubble Space Telescope, we detected ubiquitous, large (150 kiloparsec) halos of ionized oxygen surrounding star-forming galaxies, but we find much less ionized oxygen around galaxies with little or no star formation. This ionized CGM contains a substantial mass of heavy elements and gas, perhaps far exceeding the reservoirs of gas in the galaxies themselves. Outflowing winds of multiphase plasma have been proposed to regulate the buildup of galaxies, but key aspects of these outflows have not been probed with observations. Using ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy, we show that "warm-hot" plasma at 10^{5.5} K contains 10-150 times more mass than the cold gas in a poststarburst galaxy wind. This wind extends to distances >68 kiloparsecs, and at least some portion of it will escape. Moreover, the kinematical correlation of the cold and warm-hot phases indicates that the warm-hot plasma is related to the interaction of the cold matter with a hotter (unseen) phase at >>10^{6} K. We present high signal-to-noise optical spectra for 67 low-redshift (0.1 < z < 0.4) galaxies that lie within close projected distances (5 kpc < rho < 150 kpc) of 38 background UV-bright QSOs. The Keck LRIS and Magellan MagE data presented here are part of a survey that aims to construct a statistically sampled map of the physical state and metallicity of gaseous galaxy halos using the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). We provide a detailed description of the optical data reduction and subsequent spectral analysis that allow us to derive the physical properties of this uniquely data-rich sample of galaxies. The galaxy sample is divided into 38 pre-selected L ~ L*, z ~ 0.2 "target" galaxies and 29 "bonus" galaxies that lie in close proximity to the QSO sightlines. We report galaxy spectroscopic redshifts accurate to +/- 30 km s-1, impact parameters, rest-frame colors, stellar masses, total star formation rates, and gas-phase interstellar medium oxygen abundances. When we compare the distribution of these galaxy characteristics to those of the general low-redshift population, we find good agreement. The L ~ L* galaxies in this sample span a diverse range of color (1.0 < u-r < 3.0), stellar mass (10^9.5 < M/M_sun < 10^11.5), and SFRs (0.01 - 20 M_sun yr-1). We report the discovery of large amounts of cold (T ~ 10^4 K), chemically young gas in an overdensity of galaxies at redshift z ~ 1.6 in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey southern field (GOODS-S). The gas is identified thanks to the ultra-strong Mg II absorption features it imprints in the rest-frame UV spectra of galaxies in the background of the overdensity. There is no evidence that the optically-thick gas is part of any massive galaxy (i.e. M_star > 4x10^9 M_sun), but rather is associated with the overdensity; less massive and fainter galaxies (25.5 < z_850 < 27.5 mag) have too large an impact parameter to be causing ultra-strong absorption systems, based on our knowledge of such systems. The lack of corresponding Fe II absorption features, not detected even in co-added spectra, suggests that the gas is chemically more pristine than the ISM and outflows of star-forming galaxies at similar redshift, including those in the overdensity itself, and comparable to the most metal-poor stars in the Milky Way halo. A crude estimate of the projected covering factor of the high-column density gas (N_H >~ 10^20 cm-2) based on the observed fraction of galaxies with ultra-strong absorbers is C_F ~ 0.04. A broad, continuum absorption profile extending to the red of the interstellar Mg II absorption line by <~ 2000 km/s is possibly detected in two independent co-added spectra of galaxies of the overdensity, consistent with a large-scale infall motion of the gas onto the overdensity and its galaxies. Overall, these findings provides the first tentative evidence of accretion of cold, chemically young gas onto galaxies at high redshift, possibly feeding their star formation activity. We present UV and optical observations from the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope and Keck of a z= 0.27395 Lyman limit system (LLS) seen in absorption against the QSO PG1630+377. We detect H I absorption with log N(HI)=17.06\pm0.05 as well as Mg II, C III, Si III, and O VI in this system. The column densities are readily explained if this is a multi-phase system, with the intermediate and low ions arising in a very low metallicity ([Mg/ H] =-1.71 \pm 0.06) photoionized gas. We identify via Keck spectroscopy and Large Binocular Telescope imaging a 0.3 L_* star-forming galaxy projected 37 kpc from the QSO at nearly identical redshift (z=0.27406, \Delta v = -26 \kms) with near solar metallicity ([O/ H]=-0.20 \pm 0.15). The presence of very low metallicity gas in the proximity of a near-solar metallicity, sub-L_* galaxy strongly suggests that the LLS probes gas infalling onto the galaxy. A search of the literature reveals that such low metallicity LLSs are not uncommon. We found that 50% (4/8) of the well-studied z < 1 LLSs have metallicities similar to the present system and show sub-L_* galaxies with rho < 100 kpc in those fields where redshifts have been surveyed. We argue that the properties of these primitive LLSs and their host galaxies are consistent with those of cold mode accretion streams seen in galaxy simulations., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We analyzed absorption features arising from interstellar neutral carbon that appeared in the UV spectra of 89 stars recorded in the highest resolution echelle modes of STIS on HST so that we could determine the relative populations of collisionally excited fine structure levels in the atom's electronic ground state. From this information we derive the distribution of thermal pressures in the diffuse, cold neutral medium. We find a lognormal pressure distribution (weighted by mass) with a mean in log (p/k) equal to 3.58 and an rms dispersion of at least 0.175 dex that plausibly arises from turbulence with a characteristic Mach number in the range 1 < M < 4. The extreme tails in the distribution are above the lognormal function however. Overall, pressures are well correlated with local starlight intensities and extreme kinematics. Approximately 23% of the gas is at a pressure that is below that allowed for a static cold neutral medium. Accompanying nearly all of the gas is a small fraction (~0.05%) that has an extraordinarily large pressure, log (p/k) > 5.5, and this condition is more prevalent at high velocities or for regions with enhanced starlight densities. This survey suggests that the dispersion of thermal pressures in the cold, neutral ISM is predominantly governed by microscopic turbulence driven by star forming regions, with some additional effects from macroscopic events (e.g., SN explosions), and these measurements provide constraints for future studies of the broader impact of turbulence on the ISM and star formation., Comment: 60 pages, 16 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ. Serendipitous observations of a pair z = 0.37 interacting galaxies (one hosting a quasar) show a massive gaseous bridge of material connecting the two objects. This bridge is photoionized by the quasar (QSO) revealing gas along the entire projected 38 kpc sightline connecting the two galaxies. The emission lines that result give an unprecedented opportunity to study the merger process at this redshift. We determine the kinematics, ionization parameter (log U ~ -2.5 +- 0.03), column density (N_H ~ 10^{21} cm^{-2}), metallicity ([M/H] ~ -0.20 +- 0.15), and mass (~ 10^8 Msun) of the gaseous bridge. We simultaneously constrain properties of the QSO-host (M_DM>8.8x 10^{11} Msun) and its companion galaxy (M_DM>2.1 x 10^{11} Msun; M_star ~ 2 x 10^{10} Msun; stellar burst age=300-800 Myr; SFR~6 Msun/yr; and metallicity 12+log (O/H)= 8.64 +- 0.2). The general properties of this system match the standard paradigm of a galaxy-galaxy merger caught between first and second passage while one of the galaxies hosts an active quasar. The companion galaxy lies in the so-called `green valley', with a stellar population consistent with a recent starburst triggered during the first passage of the merger and has no detectable AGN activity. In addition to providing case-studies of quasars associated with galaxy mergers, quasar/galaxy pairs with QSO-photoionized tidal bridges such as this one offer unique insights into the galaxy properties while also distinguishing an important and inadequately understood phase of galaxy evolution., Comment: 23 pages, 12 figures, 5 tables, Submitted to ApJ, revised to address referee's comments

We report on the first Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) observations of damped and sub-damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) systems discovered in a new survey of the gaseous halos of low-redshift galaxies. From observations of 37 sightlines, we have discovered three DLAs and four sub-DLAs. We measure the neutral gas density Omega(HI), and redshift density dN/dz, of DLA and sub-DLA systems at z<0.35. We find dN/dz=0.25 and Omega(HI)=1.4x10^-3 for DLAs, and dN/dz=0.08 with Omega(HI)=4.2x10^-5 for sub-DLAs over a redshift path delta z=11.9. To demonstrate the scientific potential of such systems, we present a detailed analysis of the DLA at z=0.1140 in the spectrum of SDSS J1009+0713. Profile fits to the absorption lines determine log N(H I)=20.68pm0.10 with a metallicity determined from the undepleted element Sulfur of [S/H]=-0.62pm0.18. The abundance pattern of this DLA is similar to that of higher z DLAs, showing mild depletion of the refractory elements Fe and Ti with [S/Fe]=+0.24pm0.22 and [S/Ti]=+0.28pm0.15. Nitrogen is underabundant in this system with [N/H]=-1.40pm0.14, placing this DLA below the plateau of the [N/alpha] measurements in the local Universe at similar metallicities. This DLA has a simple kinematic structure with only two components required to fit the profiles and a kinematic width of 52 km/s. Imaging of the QSO field with WFC3 reveals a spiral galaxy at very small impact parameter to the QSO and several galaxies within 10". Followup spectra with LRIS reveal that none of the nearby galaxies are at the redshift of the DLA. The spiral galaxy is identified as the host galaxy of the QSO based on the near perfect alignment of the nucleus and disk of the galaxy as well as spectra of an H II region showing emission lines at the QSO redshift. A small feature appears 0.70" from the nucleus of the QSO after PSF subtraction, providing another candidate for the host galaxy of the DLA. (abb), Comment: 11 pages, 9 figues, Submitted to ApJ
