Search

Following the concept of creating individual centers, we investigate local electronic states and magnetic ordering in nickel oxide (NiO) induced by substituting oxygen (O) with nitrogen (N). Each N introduces an additional N 2p hole and alters the state of the magnetic moment at a neighboring nickel (Ni) cation site, as the exchange interaction between this hole and the Ni eg electrons dominates the superexchange interaction. This leads to the formation of Ni-N-Ni units consisting of five spins that are decoupled from the rest of the antiferromagnetic (AFM) NiO lattice and exhibit degenerate spin states. These centers are studied using density functional theory and confirmed through high-resolution spectroscopy measurements on N-substituted NiO thin films grown by molecular beam epitaxy. This type of magnetic design could potentially advance quantum technologies based on strongly correlated materials, such as quantum sensors and spin-qubits., Comment: 12 pages, 14 figures. A procedure for quantifying the U $5f$ electrons' covalence and degree of localization in U intermetallic compounds is presented. To this end, bulk sensitive hard and soft x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were utilized in combination with density-functional theory (DFT) plus dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) calculations. The energy dependence of the photoionization cross-sections allows the disentanglement of the U\,$5f$ contribution to the valence band from the various other atomic subshells so that the computational parameters in the DFT\,+\,DMFT can be reliably determined. Applying this method to UGa$_2$ and UB$_2$ as model compounds from opposite ends of the (de)localization range, we have achieved excellent simulations of the valence band and core-level spectra. The width in the distribution of atomic U\,$5f$ configurations contributing to the ground state, as obtained from the calculations, quantifies the correlated nature and degree of localization of the U\,5$f$. The findings permit answering the longstanding question why different spectroscopic techniques give seemingly different numbers for the U 5$f$ valence in intermetallic U compounds., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures

We investigate the topological superconductor candidate UTe$_2$ using high-resolution valence-band resonant inelastic x-ray scattering at the U $M_{4,5}$-edges. We observe atomic-like low-energy excitations that support the correlated nature of this unconventional superconductor. These excitations originate from the U $5f^2$ configuration, which is unexpected since the short Te2-Te2 distances exclude Te2 being 2-. By utilizing the photoionization cross-section dependence of the photoemission spectra in combination with band structure calculations, we infer that the stabilization of the U $5f^2$ configuration is due to the U $6d$ bonding states in the U-dimers acting as a charge reservoir. The application of pressure as well as the successive substitution of Ru with Fe in the hidden order (HO) compound URu$_2$Si$_2$ leads to the formation of the large moment antiferromagnetic phase (LMAFM). Here we have investigated the substitution series URu$_{2-x}$Fe$_x$Si$_2$ from $x$\,=\,0.0 to 2.0 by U\,4$f$ core-level photoelectron spectroscopy and have observed non-monotonic changes in the spectra. The initial increase and subsequent decrease of the spectral weight of the 4$f$ core level satellite with increasing $x$ stands for a non-monotonic 5$f$ filling across the substitution series. The competition of chemical pressure and increase of the density of states at the Fermi energy, both due to substitution of Ru with Fe, can explain such a behavior. An extended Doniach phase diagram including the $x$ dependence of the density of states is proposed. Also in URu$_{2-x}$Fe$_x$Si$_2$ the ground state is a singlet or quasi-doublet state consisting of two singlets. Hence, the formation of magnetic order in the URu$_{2-x}$Fe$_x$Si$_2$ substitution series must be explained within a singlet magnetism model., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

CeRh$_2$As$_2$ is a new multiphase superconductor with strong suggestions for an additional itinerant multipolar ordered phase. The modeling of the low temperature properties of this heavy fermion compound requires a quartet Ce$^{3+}$ crystal-field ground state. Here we provide the evidence for the formation of such a quartet state using x-ray spectroscopy. Core-level photoelectron and x-ray absorption spectroscopy confirm the presence of Kondo hybridization in CeRh$_2$As$_2$. The temperature dependence of the linear dichroism unambiguously reveils the impact of Kondo physics for coupling the Kramer's doublets into an effective quasi-quartet. Non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering data find that the $|\Gamma_7^- \rangle$ state with its lobes along the 110 direction of the tetragonal structure ($xy$ orientation) contributes most to the multi-orbital ground state of CeRh$_2$As$_2$., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

Using high resolution tender-x-ray resonant inelastic scattering and hard-x-ray non-resonant inelastic scattering beyond the dipole limit we were able to detect electronic excitations in intermetallic UGa$_2$ that are highly atomic in nature. Analysis of the spectral lineshape reveals that the local $5f^2$ configuration characterizes the correlated nature of this ferromagnet. The orientation and directional dependence of the spectra indicate that the ground state is made of the $\Gamma_1$ singlet and/or $\Gamma_6$ doublet symmetry. With the ordered moment in the $ab$ plane, we infer that the magnetism originates from the higher lying $\Gamma_6$ doublet being mixed with the $\Gamma_1$ singlet due to inter-site exchange, qualifying UGa$_2$ to be a true quantum magnet. The ability to observe atomic excitations is crucial to resolve the on-going debate about the degree of localization versus itineracy in U intermetallics., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

We investigated the electronic structure of the enigmatic CeRh$_3$B$_2$ using resonant inelastic scattering and x-ray absorption spectroscopy in combination with $ab$ $initio$ density functional calculations. We find that the Rh 4$d$ states are irrelevant for the high-temperature ferromagnetism and the Kondo effect. We also find that the Ce 4$f$ crystal-field strength is too small to explain the strong reduction of the Ce magnetic moment. The data reveal instead the presence of two different active Ce 4$f$ orbitals, with each coupling selectively to different bands in CeRh$_3$B$_2$. The inter-site hybridization of the |J=5/2,Jz=+/-1/2> crystal-field state and Ce 5$d$ band combined with the intra-site Ce 4$f$-5$d$ exchange creates the strong ferromagnetism, while hybridization between the |J=5/2,Jz=+/-5/2> and the B $sp$ in the $ab$-plane contributes to the Kondo interaction which causes the moment reduction. Zeolites are so well known in real world applications and after decades of scientific study that they hardly need any intro-duction: their importance in chemistry cannot be overemphasized. Here we add to the remarkable properties that they dis-play by reporting our discovery that the simplest zeolite, sodalite, when doped with Cr3+ in the \b{eta}-cage, is a frustrated magnet. Soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy and magnetic measurements reveal that the Cr present is Cr(III). Cr(III), with its isotropic 3d3 valence electron configuration, is well-known as the basis for many geometrically frustrated magnets, but it is especially surprising that a material like the Ca8Al12Cr2O29 zeolite is a frustrated magnet. This finding illustrates the value of exploring the properties of even well-known materials families.

The crystal-field ground state wave function of CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ has been investigated with linear polarized $M$-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy from 250mK to 250K, thus covering the superconducting ($T_{\text{c}}$=0.6K), the Kondo ($T_{\text{K}}$$\approx$20K) as well as the Curie-Weiss regime. The comparison with full-multiplet calculations shows that the temperature dependence of the experimental linear dichroism is well explained with a $\Gamma_7^{(1)}$ crystal-field ground-state and the thermal population of excited states at around 30meV. The crystal-field scheme does not change throughout the entire temperature range thus making the scenario of orbital switching unlikely. Spectroscopic evidence for the presence of the Ce 4$f^0$ configuration in the ground state is consistent with the possibility for a multi-orbital character of the ground state. We estimate from the Kondo temperature and crystal-field splitting energies that several percents of the higher lying $\Gamma_6$ state and $\Gamma_7^{(2)}$ crystal-field states are mixed into the primarily $\Gamma_7^{(1)}$ ground state. This estimate is also supported by re-normalized band-structure calculations that uses the experimentally determined crystal-field scheme., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

The development of high-density magnetic recording media is limited by the superparamagnetism in very small ferromagnetic crystals. Hard magnetic materials with strong perpendicular anisotropy offer stability and high recording density. To overcome the difficulty of writing media with a large coercivity, heat assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) has been developed, rapidly heating the media to the Curie temperature Tc before writing, followed by rapid cooling. Requirements are a suitable Tc, coupled with anisotropic thermal conductivity and hard magnetic properties. Here we introduce Rh2CoSb as a new hard magnet with potential for thin film magnetic recording. A magnetocrystalline anisotropy of 3.6 MJm-3 is combined with a saturation magnetization of {\mu}0Ms = 0.52 T at 2 K (2.2 MJm-3 and 0.44 T at room-temperature). The magnetic hardness parameter of 3.7 at room temperature is the highest observed for any rare-earth free hard magnet. The anisotropy is related to an unquenched orbital moment of 0.42 {\mu}B on Co, which is hybridized with neighbouring Rh atoms with a large spin-orbit interaction. Moreover, the pronounced temperature-dependence of the anisotropy that follows from its Tc of 450 K, together with a high thermal conductivity of 20 Wm-1K-1, makes Rh2CoSb a candidate for development for heat assisted writing with a recording density in excess of 10 Tb/in2.

The application of pressure as well as the successive substitution of Ru with Fe in the hidden order (HO) compound URu$_2$Si$_2$ leads to the formation of the large moment antiferromagnetic phase (LMAFM). Here we have investigated the substitution series URu$_{2-x}$Fe$_x$Si$_2$ with $x$ = 0.2 and 0.3 with non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (NIXS) and 4$f$ core-level photoelectron spectroscopy with hard x-rays (HAXPES). NIXS shows that the substitution of Fe has no impact on the symmetry of the ground-state wave function. In HAXPES we find no shift of spectral weight that would be indicative for a change of the 5$f$-electron count. Consequently, changes in the exchange interaction $\cal{J}$ due to substitution must be minor so that the conjecture of chemical pressure seems unlikely. An alternative scenario is discussed, namely the formation of long range magnetic order due the substitution induced local enhancement of the magnetization in the vicinity of the $f$-electron ions while the overall electronic structure remains unchanged., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Using inelastic x-ray scattering beyond the dipole limit and hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy we establish the dual nature of the U $5f$ electrons in UM$_2$Si$_2$ (M = Pd, Ni, Ru, Fe), regardless of their degree of delocalization. We have observed that the compounds have in common a local atomic-like state that is well described by the U $5f^2$ configuration with the $\Gamma_1^{(1)}$ and $\Gamma_2$ quasi-doublet symmetry. The amount of the U 5$f^3$ configuration, however, varies considerably across the UM$_2$Si$_2$ series, indicating an increase of U5$f$ itineracy in going from M=Pd to Ni to Ru, and to the Fe compound. The identified electronic states explain the formation of the very large ordered magnetic moments in UPd$_2$Si$_2$ and UNi$_2$Si$_2$, the availability of orbital degrees of freedom needed for the hidden order in URu$_2$Si$_2$ to occur, as well as the appearance of Pauli paramagnetism in UFe$_2$Si$_2$. A unified and systematic picture of the U$M_2$Si$_2$ compounds may now be drawn, thereby providing suggestions for new experiments to induce hidden order and/or superconductivity in U compounds with the tetragonal body-centered ThCr$_2$Si$_2$ structure.

Room-temperature ferrimagnetism was discovered for the anti-site-disordered perovskite Ca2MnOsO6 with Tc = 305 K. Ca2MnOsO6 crystallizes into an orthorhombic structure with a space group of Pnma, in which Mn and Os share the oxygen-coordinated-octahedral site at an equal ratio without a noticeable ordered arrangement. The material is electrically semiconducting with variable-range-hopping behavior. X-ray absorption spectroscopy confirmed the trivalent state of the Mn and the pentavalent state of the Os. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy reveals that the Mn and Os magnetic moments are aligned antiferromagnetically, thereby classifying the material as a ferrimagnet which is in accordance with band structure calculations. It is intriguing that the magnetic signal of the Os is very weak, and that the observed total magnetic moment is primarily due to the Mn. The Tc = 305 K is the second highest in the material category of so-called disordered ferromagnets such as CaRu1-xMnxO3, SrRu1-xCrxO3, and CaIr1-xMnxO3, and hence, may support the development of spintronic oxides with relaxed requirements concerning the anti-site disorder of the magnetic ions.

The one-dimensional cobaltate Ca3Co2O6 is an intriguing material having an unconventional magnetic structure, displaying quantum tunneling phenomena in its magnetization. Using a newly developed experimental method, s-core-level non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (s-NIXS), we were able to image the atomic Co 3d orbital that is responsible for the Ising magnetism in this system. We show that we can directly observe that it is the complex d2 orbital occupied by the sixth electron at the high-spin Co-trig{3+} (d6) sites that generates this behavior. This is extremely rare in the research field of transition metal compounds, and is only made possible by the delicately balanced prismatic trigonal coordination. The ability to directly relate the orbital occupation with the local crystal structure is essential to model the magnetic properties of this system.

A new 3d-5d hybridized quadruple perovskite oxide, CaCu3Mn2Ir2O12, was synthesized by high-pressure and high-temperature methods. The Rietveld structure analysis reveals that the compound crystallizes in an AA'3B4O12-type perovskite structure with space group Im-3, where the Ca and Cu are 1:3 ordered at fixed atomic positions. At the B site the 3d Mn and the 5d Ir ions are disorderly distributed due to a rare equal +4 charge states for both of them as determined by X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The competing antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions among Cu2+, Mn4+, and Ir4+ ions give rise to spin glass behavior, which follows a conventional dynamical slowing down model.

The spectacular physical properties of quantum materials based on transition metal, rare earth, and actinide elements continue to challenge our comprehension of solid state physics and chemistry. The electronic states of these materials are dominated by the $d$ and $f$ wave functions intertwined with the strong band formation of the solid. In order to estimate which wave functions contribute to the ground state formation, we have had to rely, until now, on theoretical calculations combined with spectroscopy. Here we show that $s$-core-level non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering ($s$-NIXS) can directly image the active orbital in real space, without the necessity of any modeling. The power and accuracy of this new technique is shown using the text-book example, x$^2$-y$^2$/3$z^2$-r$^2$ orbital of the Ni$^{2+}$ ion in NiO single crystal., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

The crystal-field (CF) splitting of the $^6H_{5/2}$ Hund's rule ground state of Sm$^{3+}$ in the strongly correlated topological insulator SmB$_6$ has been determined with high resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Sm M$_5$ edge. The valence selectivity of RIXS allows isolating the crystal-field-split excited multiplets of the Sm$^{3+}$ (4$f^5$) configuration from those of Sm$^{2+}$ (4$f^6$) in intermediate valent SmB$_6$. The very large energy range of RIXS allows the crystal-field analysis of a high lying multiplet at about 2.4\,eV that has the same total angular momentum $J$ as the ground state so that ambiguities due to the elastic tail can be avoided. We find that the $\Gamma_7$ doublet and $\Gamma_8$ quartet of the $^6H_{5/2}$ Hund's rule ground state are split by $\Delta^{CF}_{^6H_{5/2}}$\,=\,20$\pm$10\,meV which sets an upper limit for the 4$f$ band width. This indicates an extremely large mass renormalization from the band structure value, pointing out the need to consider the coefficients of fractional parentage for the hopping of the 4$f$ electrons., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

We have investigated the local low-energy excitations in CeRu$_4$Sn$_6$, a material discussed recently in the framework of strongly correlated Weyl semimetals, by means of Ce $M_5$ resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). The availability of both $^2$F$_\frac{5}{2}$ and $^2$F$_\frac{7}{2}$ excitations of the Ce $4f^1$ configuration in the spectra allows for the determination of the crystal-electric field parameters that explain quantitatively the temperature dependence and anisotropy of the magnetic susceptibility. The absence of an azimuthal dependence in the spectra indicates that all crystal-electric field states are close to being rotational symmetric. We show further that the non-negligible impact of the $\check A_6^0$ parameter on the ground state of CeRu$_4$Sn$_6$ leads to a reduction of the magnetic moment due to multiplet intermixing. Polycrystalline samples of double perovskites Ba2BOsO6 (B = Sc, Y, In) were synthesized by solid state reactions. They adopt the cubic double perovskite structures (space group, Fm-3m) with ordered B and Os arrangements. Ba2BOsO6 (B = Sc, Y, In) show antiferromagnetic transitions at 93 K, 69 K, and 28 K, respectively. The Weiss-temperatures are -590 K for Ba2ScOsO6, -571 K for Ba2YOsO6, and -155 K for Ba2InOsO6. Sc3+ and Y3+ have the open-shell d0 electronic configuration, while In3+ has the closed-shell d10. This indicates that a d0 B-type cation induces stronger overall magnetic exchange interactions in comparison to a d10. Comparison of Ba2BOsO6 (B = Sc, Y, In) to their Sr and Ca analogues shows that the structural distortions weaken the overall magnetic exchange interactions.

We investigated the crystal-electric field ground state of the 4$f$ manifold in the strongly correlated topological insulator SmB$_6$ using core level non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (NIXS). The directional dependence of the scattering function that arises from higher multipole transitions establishes unambiguously that the $\Gamma_8$ quartet state of the Sm $f^5$ $J$=$5/2$ configuration governs the ground-state symmetry and hence the topological properties of SmB$_6$. The ferromagnetic semiconductor Ba2NiOsO6 (Tmag ~100 K) was synthesized at 6 GPa and 1500 {\deg}C. It crystallizes into a double perovskite structure [Fm-3m; a = 8.0428(1) {\AA}], where the Ni2+ and Os6+ ions are perfectly ordered at the perovskite B-site. We show that the spin-orbit coupling of Os6+ plays an essential role in opening the charge gap. The magnetic state was investigated by density functional theory calculations and powder neutron diffraction. The latter revealed a collinear ferromagnetic order in a >21 kOe magnetic field at 5 K. The ferromagnetic gapped state is fundamentally different from that of known dilute magnetic semiconductors such as (Ga,Mn)As and (Cd,Mn)Te (Tmag < 180 K), the spin-gapless semiconductor Mn2CoAl (Tmag ~720 K), and the ferromagnetic insulators EuO (Tmag ~70 K) and Bi3Cr3O11 (Tmag ~220 K). It is also qualitatively different from known ferrimagnetic insulator/semiconductors, which are characterized by an antiparallel spin arrangement. Our finding of the ferromagnetic semiconductivity of Ba2NiOsO6 should increase interest in the platinum group oxides, because this new class of materials should be useful in the development of spintronic, quantum magnetic, and related devices.

The second-order phase transition into a hidden order phase in URu$_2$Si$_2$ goes along with an order parameter which is still a mystery, despite 30 years of research. However, it is understood that the symmetry of the order parameter must be related to the symmetry of the low lying local electronic $f$-states. Here we present results of a novel spectroscopy, namely core-level non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (NIXS). This method allows for the measurement of local high-multipole excitations and it is bulk sensitive. The observed anisotropy of the scattering function unambiguously shows that the 5$f$ ground state wave function is composed mainly, but essentially not purely, of the $\Gamma_1$ with majority $J_z$ =$|4\rangle$ + $|-4\rangle$ and/or $\Gamma_2$ singlet states., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

We have identified epitaxially grown elemental Te as a capping material that is suited to protect the topological surface states of intrinsically insulating Bi$_2$Te$_3$. By using angle-resolved photoemission, we were able to show that the Te overlayer leaves the dispersive bands of the surface states intact and that it does not alter the chemical potential of the Bi$_2$Te$_3$ thin film. From in-situ four-point contact measurements, we observed that the conductivity of the capped film is still mainly determined by the metallic surface states and that the contribution of the capping layer is minor. Moreover, the Te overlayer can be annealed away in vacuum to produce a clean Bi$_2$Te$_3$ surface in its pristine state even after the exposure of the capped film to air. Topological insulators represent a novel state of matter with surface charge carriers having a massless Dirac dispersion and locked helical spin polarization. Many exciting experiments have been proposed by theory, yet, their execution have been hampered by the extrinsic conductivity associated with the unavoidable presence of defects in Bi$_2$Te$_3$ and Bi$_2$Se$_3$ bulk single crystals as well as impurities on their surfaces. Here we present the preparation of Bi$_2$Te$_3$ thin films that are insulating in the bulk and the four-point probe measurement of the conductivity of the Dirac states on surfaces that are intrinsically clean. The total amount of charge carriers in the experiment is of order 10$^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$ only and mobilities up to 4,600 cm$^2$/Vs have been observed. These values are achieved by carrying out the preparation, structural characterization, angle-resolved and x-ray photoemission analysis, and the temperature dependent four-point probe conductivity measurement all in-situ under ultra-high-vacuum conditions. The synthesis, structure, and elementary magnetic and electronic properties are reported for layered compounds of the type Na3-xMIr2O6 and Na3-xM2IrO6, where M is a transition metal from the 3d series (M=Zn, Cu, Ni, Co, Fe and Mn). The rhombohedral structures, in space group R-3m, were determined by refinement of neutron and synchrotron powder diffraction data. No clear evidence for long range 2:1 or 1:2 honeycomb-like M/Ir ordering was found in the neutron powder diffraction patterns except in the case of M = Zn, thus in general the compounds are best designated as sodium deficient {\alpha}-NaFeO2-type phases with formulas Na1-xM1/3Ir2/3O2 or Na1-xM2/3Ir1/3O2. Synchrotron powder diffraction patterns indicate that several of the compounds likely have honeycomb in-plane metal-iridium ordering with disordered stacking of the layers. All the compounds are sodium deficient under our synthetic conditions and are black and insulating. Weiss constants derived from magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate that Na0.62Mn0.61Ir0.39O2, Na0.80Fe2/3Ir1/3O2, Na0.92Ni1/3Ir2/3O2, Na0.86Cu1/3Ir2/3O2, and Na0.89Zn1/3Ir2/3O2 display dominant antiferromagnetic interactions. For Na0.90Co1/3Ir2/3O2 the dominant magnetic interactions at low temperature are ferromagnetic while at high temperatures they are antiferromagnetic; there is also a change in the effective moment. Low temperature specific heat measurements (to 2 K) on Na0.92Ni1/3Ir2/3O2 indicate the presence of a broad magnetic ordering transition. X-ray absorption spectroscopy shows that iridium is at or close to the 4+ oxidation state in all compounds. 23Na nuclear magnetic resonance measurements comparing Na2IrO3 to Na0.92Ni1/3Ir2/3O2 and Na0.89Zn1/3Ir2/3O2 provide strong indications that the electron spins are short-range ordered in the latter two materials.
