The article looks at the condition of women in Caribbean intra-regional migration. A brief historical overview of how migration became an endorsement of freedom and a right of passage is given. It highlights the role of gender to the aspects of socialization as well as explores the interactive relationship between migration and gender. The types of situation in which migration is employed to facilitate the capacity of women to deal with their roles and responsibilities are emphasized.

Chapter 8 of the book "Returning to the Source: The Final Stage of the Caribbean Migration Circuit" is presented. It illustrates return migration as an aspect of circulation that defines the parameters of individual and shared transnational space. Construction and use of space are discussed as an effort by migrants to maximize the value of their migration. Experiences of 37 return migrants are presented as part of the Jamaican government's Return of Talent programme. Personal transnational circulation is also described.

The active consideration of proposals by Jamaican government agencies to encourage heritage tourism by opening up the Cockpit Country (an ecologically sensitive area and home to the Maroons), raises questions about the manner in which this unique aspect of Jamaica's cultural and environmental heritage is to be exploited. The Maroons, the descendants of runaway slaves, secured treaty rights to land from the colonial authorities in the eighteenth century, were able to retain better their cultural traditions because of their inaccessibility. Tourism literature illustrates the difficulties and dangers in the development of heritage sites unless careful safeguards are put in place. It also raises questions about authenticity and leads to the suggestion that much more consultation both with the Maroons themselves, as well as anthropologists, historians and ecologists, needs to take place before this unique cultural and ecological heritage is developed by tourist entrepreneurs.
