After a case of Angiostrongylus vasorum (canine lungworm) was diagnosed in the province of Chieti (Italy) in early 2008, parasitological research was conducted to investigate the presence of the parasite in dogs in the area. A total of 178 dogs, 56 carcasses and 122 stool samples were examined between January and September 2008. The carcasses were examined for the presence of adult parasites in the right ventricle and pulmonary artery, and larval forms in the internal organ and brain tissues. The faeces were inspected for larval form L1 using three diagnostic methods that are currently used to test for endoparasites and larvae of bronchopulmonary strongyles. A total of 20 cases of canine angiostrongylosis were diagnosed (8.9%), with adult parasites being identified in 5 dogs, and L1 larvae in another 15. The anatomo-pathological examination of the carcasses of the dogs infested with adult nematodes revealed pneumonia, pleurisy, reddish foam in the trachea, effusion of serohaemorrhagic fluid in the thoracic cavity and enlarged mediastinic and mesenteric lymph nodes. Histological examination of the tissues showed serious, similar syndromes with lesions caused by colonisation of the kidneys, lymph nodes and brain by the parasites. Given the large number of cases confirmed in relation to the period of study (9 months), it is essential to include angiostrongylosis among the differential diagnoses made in clinical and post-mortem examinations of dogs in the province of Chieti and in the neighbouring areas.

Mortality of white-clawed crayfish, Austropotamobius pallipes complex, occurred in a Northeastern Italian trout hatchery during an intensive breeding trial between autumn 2004 and summer 2005. The crayfish were submitted to postmortem histological, microscopical, mycological and bacteriological examinations. Saprolegniaceae were isolated from gills, legs and abdomen of all crayfish samples, while Fusarium sp. was found in only one specimen. The ectosymbiotic peritrichous ciliate protozoan, Cothurnia sieboldii, and a clitellate annelid, Branchiobdella hexodonta, were found on gill filaments and exoskeletons of all specimens examined. Fungal hyphae were observed on gonopods, abdominal exoskeletons, eye stalks and leg joints. These infections were occasionally observed causing heavy inflammatory lesions in skeletal muscle and green gland, and necrosis in the hypoderm; in some cases the hyphae were surrounded by melanin. The cause of mortality was attributed to a Saprolegniaceae infection, induced by poor water quality conditions

In Italy, babesiosis is widespread in several Central and Southern Regions, but few data are available on its presence in most Italian areas. In 2004 a project was financed by the MIUR to investigate on the babesiosis epidemiology in vertebrate and invertebrate hosts, and on the transmission risk for humans in Central and Northern Regions of the Country. Microscopy and/or molecular tools were applied to blood samples of wild animals, livestock and pets, and to 1,677 ticks collected on animals or in the environment, with the aim of detect babesial parasites. Moreover, serological tests were used to evaluate the circulation of these protozoa among animals and people at risk. Microscopy identified as positive 5,0% of the animals, mostly living in central regions, but also in Northern areas considered Babesia-free. Serology evidenced the same general trend. PCR detected “piroplasm” DNA in 13.8% of the animals, and sequencing identified babesial parasites in 101/233 samples. The ticks were identified as belonging to 12 species, mostly represented by Ixodes ricinus, Rhipicephalus sanguineus and Dermacentor marginatus. Molecular analyses evidenced babesial parasites in 3.8% of them; in Rh. sanguineus was also demonstrated the vertical transmission of Babesia canis canis. To date 30 human sera have been analysed: 3 showed antibodies to B. microti. Animal babesiosis is largely present among pets, wild and farm animals, whereas goats seem refractory to the infection. In wild ungulates have been found the B. divergens-like, and the Babesia EU1 strains (reported in Italy in humans). Our findings evidenced the low reliability of microscopy in epidemiological studies, and the need of new/improved immunological tests to face diagnostic problems. The monitoring of infected areas and infection rates, joined to appropriate control programs, seems necessary to avoid the transmission of babesiosis to humans.

In order to assess the parasitological status in imported pheasants, 51 birds (Phasianus colchicus) coming from Poland and Rumania and used in Italy in repopulation interventions for hunting purposes were examined. From each animal the trachea, oesophagus, crop and intestine were collected and examined for the presence of nematodes. The examination of the oesophagi and crops of 5 birds revealed the presence of parasites pertaining to the family Capillariidae: Eucoleus contortus was found in all of the 5 animals, E. annulatus was present along with the previous parasite in one animal coming from Poland. The examination of the tracheae revealed the presence of Syngamus trachea in 5 animals (9.80%). Adult or larval stages of Heterakis gallinarum (37.25% of birds) and Capillariidae (35.29%) were found in the intestinal tracts. Aonchotheca caudinflata was detected only in one bird coming from Poland; the capillarids found in all of the remaining pheasants exhibited morphological characteristics referable to Capillaria phasianina, a species never reported in Italy. The release of game from foreign countries, therefore, may always constitute a risk for the autochthonous one due to the spread of new parasitic infections.

Several populations of allochthonous crayfish Procambarus clarkii (Girard, 1852) were studied in order to observe the presence and effects of pathogenic organisms. A total of 178 animals were analysed over a 3 year period. The specimens were collected from the canals and the ditches of Rena Land Reclamation Consortium (Province of Bologna) during the summer seasons from 2001 to 2003. The study involved mycological, parasitological, bacteriological and histopathological investigations. At mycological examination, 95.51% of the samples were infected and Fusarium sp. was the most frequently isolated fungus (27.52%). During parasitological investigation, Epistylis spp. and Cothurnia spp. were frequently isolated from the gills and the cuticle of the exoskeleton. One commensal Nematode in the gills and four intestinal Nematodes whose determination is still under study were found. Bacteriological examination of crayfish which died during transport and in laboratory tanks led to the isolation of Citrobacter freundii and Pseudomonas sp. Histopathological investigation is described.
