Abstract

We present Isotòpia, an open-access database compiling over 36,000 stable isotope measurements (δ13C, δ15N, δ18O, δ34S, 87Sr/86Sr, 206Pb/204Pb, 207Pb/204Pb, 208Pb/204Pb, 207Pb/206Pb, and 208Pb/206Pb) on human, animal, and plant bioarchaeological remains dating to Classical Antiquity (approximately 800 BCE ‐ 500 CE). These were recovered from different European regions, particularly from the Mediterranean. Isotòpia provides a comprehensive characterisation of the isotopic data, encompassing various historical, archaeological, biological, and environmental variables. Isotòpia is a resource for meta-analytical research of past human activities and paleoenvironments. The database highlights data gaps in isotopic classical archaeology, such as the limited number of isotopic measurements available for plants and animals, limited number of studies on spatial mobility, and spatial heterogeneity of isotopic research. As such, we emphasise the necessity to address and fill these gaps in order to unlock the reuse potential of this database. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

14. 'Marrying in and eating out' : mobility, food and social dynamics in Bronze Age southern Italy : trace element analysis at Sant'Abbondio (Pompeii, Naples)

Abstract

This thesis uses multi-elemental Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) trace element analysis of human bone and dental enamel from the Middle Bronze Age cemetery of Sant'Abbondio (Pompeii, Naples) to explore the socio-economic dynamics of Italian Bronze Age groups. Taking Salvatore Puglisi's idea as a starting point, the use of trace element data is directed towards the identification of patterns of mobility in relation to transhumant pastoralism and marriage exchanges, believed to characterise Bronze Age patrilineal society. Mobility is seen to represent the praxis through which economic and social practices can be expressed and is examined via food consumption through its ability to describe the relationship between humans and the environment. The consumption of foodstuffs related to a specific environment is detectable through the elemental concentration of the human tissues. The identification of patterns of consumption allows thus the definition of locality in its specific meaning of place where resources are gathered and/or produced. Food can also act as a vehicle used to express the habitus, and is investigated as a means through which individual and collective identity is defined in Italian prehistory. The identification of patterns of mobility and food consumption, through the use of bone chemistry, offers the change to develop more complex interpretations through an innovative methodological approach. New ideas are proposed in terms of gender and social identity for the Bronze Age of Italy.

Abstract

journées 2023 de la société d' anthropologie de Paris; International audience; The study of children’s role in past communities is difficult to face in archaeology. An active contribution of the children in everyday life varies within societies and cultures, as well as the social and biological definition of childhood. In Central Italy, specific funerary customs for subadults are documented in the Copper Age(4th-3rd millennia BCE) according to age classes. Here we propose to investigate childhood in an Italian Copper Age human group by a multi- isotope analysis (δ$^{13}$C, δ$^{15}$N,δ$^{34}$S and $^{87}$Sr/$^{86}$Sr) on dentine/enamel and bone of two adult individuals, from the funerary cave of Grotta Spinosa (Central Italy). The reconstruction of the dietary intake variation and of the displacements occurred during early-life was compared to the adult values and to those of the rest of the group analysed, as well as the few comparative data available from prehistoric Italy. The framework obtained from this multi-tissue and multi-isotope study helped to shed light on experiences previously only suggested by the archaeological and skeletal evidence (i.e. passage to adulthood, and children’s implication in community life). The interpretation of the isotopic data in the light of the archaeological and biological information available, from the cave and the region (Central Italy), allowed us to suggest an age interval (ca. 10-12 y.o.) in which the children were likely involved in the "adult’s" tasks. This exploratory study highlights the interest of geochemical tools applied on archaeological remains and the need to develop further high-resolution and multi-tissue sampling when investigating particular past population practices.

Abstract

Detailed taphonomic and skeletal analyses document the diverse and often unusual burial practices employed by European Neolithic populations. In the Upper Chamber at Scaloria Cave in southern Italy, the remains of some two dozen individuals had been subjected to careful and systematic defleshing and disarticulation involving cutting and scraping with stone tools, which had left their marks on the bones. In some cases these were not complete bodies but parts of bodies that had been brought to the cave from the surrounding area. The fragmented and commingled burial layer that resulted from these activities indicates complex secondary burial rites effecting the transition from entirely living to entirely dead individuals. Abstract

Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis was carried out on human and animal bones from four inland Early and Middle Bronze Age sites in Northern and Southern Italy. The main aims of the investigation were to explore the contribution of plant foods to the human diet and to examine any dietary differences between and within each of the sites. At two of the sites in Northern Italy, human and animal bones were significantly enriched in [sup.13]C. This finding was attributed to the consumption of domestic millets (Panicum miliaceum and/or Setaria italica), which are [C.sub.4] pathway plants. Conversely, individuals from the two Bronze Age sites in Southern Italy were significantly depleted in [sup.13]C compared to those from the north. Here, millet was absent from the diet, and protein from [C.sub.3] plants made a much greater dietary contribution than animal protein. This finding highlights the importance of cereal cultivation, most likely of wheat and barley, in the south of Italy during the Bronze Age. Overall, our results support the idea that the widespread cultivation of millet first occurred in Northern Italy, following its introduction from across the Alps in Central Europe. Finally, we found no significant differences in the stable isotope values between individuals at each site, when grouped by their sex or presence of grave goods. This leads to the conclusion that any status difference that may have existed is not reflected in the long-term dietary record, or at least not as measurable by stable isotope analysis.
