Fe$_5$GeTe$_2$ is a van der Waals (vdW)-coupled unconventional ferromagnetic metal with a high Curie temperature ($T_C$) exceeding 300 K. The formation of an anomalous ground state significantly below $T_C$ has received considerable attention, resulting in increased interest in understanding the spin-polarized electronic state evolution near the Fermi energy ($E_F$) as a function of temperature. Despite recent extensive studies, a microscopic understanding of the spin-polarized electronic structure around $E_F$ has not yet been established owing to the intrinsic complexity of both the crystal and band structures. In this study, we investigate the temperature dependence of element-specific soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). A systematic temperature evolution in the XMCD signal from both magnetic Fe and its ligand Te is clearly observed. More importantly, the enhancement in the hybridization between the Fe 3$d$ and Te 5$p$ states in the zero-magnetic field limit is revealed, and we discuss its implications on the possible emergence of an exotic magnetic ground state in Fe$_5$GeTe$_2$., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

The van der Waals ferromagnet Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ (CGT) has a two-dimensional crystal structure where each layer is stacked through van der Waals force. We have investigated the nature of the ferromagnetism and the weak perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) of CGT by means of X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) studies of CGT single crystals. The XMCD spectra at the Cr $L_{2,3}$ edge for different magnetic field directions were analyzed on the basis of the cluster-model multiplet calculation. The Cr valence is confirmed to be 3+ and the orbital magnetic moment is found to be nearly quenched, as expected for the high-spin $t_{2g}$$^3$ configuration of the Cr$^{3+}$ ion. A large ($\sim 0.2$ eV) trigonal crystal-field splitting of the $t_{2g}$ level caused by the distortion of the CrTe$_6$ octahedron has been revealed, while the single-ion anisotropy (SIA) of the Cr atom is found to have a sign {\it opposite} to the observed PMA and too weak compared to the reported anisotropy energy. The present result suggests that anisotropic exchange coupling between the Cr atoms through the ligand Te $5p$ orbitals having strong spin-orbit coupling has to be invoked to explain the weak PMA of CGT, as in the case of the strong PMA of CrI$_3$., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

LiteBIRD is a JAXA-led Strategic Large-Class mission designed to search for the existence of the primordial gravitational waves produced during the inflationary phase of the Universe, through the measurements of their imprint onto the polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). These measurements, requiring unprecedented sensitivity, will be performed over the full sky, at large angular scales, and over 15 frequency bands from 34GHz to 448GHz. The LiteBIRD instruments consist of three telescopes, namely the Low-, Medium- and High-Frequency Telescope (respectively LFT, MFT and HFT). We present in this paper an overview of the design of the Medium-Frequency Telescope (89-224GHz) and the High-Frequency Telescope (166-448GHz), the so-called MHFT, under European responsibility, which are two cryogenic refractive telescopes cooled down to 5K. They include a continuous rotating half-wave plate as the first optical element, two high-density polyethylene (HDPE) lenses and more than three thousand transition-edge sensor (TES) detectors cooled to 100mK. We provide an overview of the concept design and the remaining specific challenges that we have to face in order to achieve the scientific goals of LiteBIRD., Comment: SPIE Conference

LiteBIRD, the Lite (Light) satellite for the study of B-mode polarization and Inflation from cosmic background Radiation Detection, is a space mission for primordial cosmology and fundamental physics. JAXA selected LiteBIRD in May 2019 as a strategic large-class (L-class) mission, with its expected launch in the late 2020s using JAXA's H3 rocket. LiteBIRD plans to map the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization over the full sky with unprecedented precision. Its main scientific objective is to carry out a definitive search for the signal from cosmic inflation, either making a discovery or ruling out well-motivated inflationary models. The measurements of LiteBIRD will also provide us with an insight into the quantum nature of gravity and other new physics beyond the standard models of particle physics and cosmology. To this end, LiteBIRD will perform full-sky surveys for three years at the Sun-Earth Lagrangian point L2 for 15 frequency bands between 34 and 448 GHz with three telescopes, to achieve a total sensitivity of 2.16 micro K-arcmin with a typical angular resolution of 0.5 deg. at 100GHz. LiteBIRD has been selected as JAXA's strategic large mission in the 2020s, to observe the cosmic microwave background (CMB) $B$-mode polarization over the full sky at large angular scales. The challenges of LiteBIRD are the wide field-of-view (FoV) and broadband capabilities of millimeter-wave polarization measurements, which are derived from the system requirements. The possible paths of stray light increase with a wider FoV and the far sidelobe knowledge of $-56$ dB is a challenging optical requirement. A crossed-Dragone configuration was chosen for the low frequency telescope (LFT : 34--161 GHz), one of LiteBIRD's onboard telescopes. It has a wide field-of-view ($18^\circ \times 9^\circ$) with an aperture of 400 mm in diameter, corresponding to an angular resolution of about 30 arcminutes around 100 GHz. The focal ratio f/3.0 and the crossing angle of the optical axes of 90$^\circ$ are chosen after an extensive study of the stray light. The primary and secondary reflectors have rectangular shapes with serrations to reduce the diffraction pattern from the edges of the mirrors. The reflectors and structure are made of aluminum to proportionally contract from warm down to the operating temperature at $5\,$K. A 1/4 scaled model of the LFT has been developed to validate the wide field-of-view design and to demonstrate the reduced far sidelobes. A polarization modulation unit (PMU), realized with a half-wave plate (HWP) is placed in front of the aperture stop, the entrance pupil of this system. A large focal plane with approximately 1000 AlMn TES detectors and frequency multiplexing SQUID amplifiers is cooled to 100 mK. The lens and sinuous antennas have broadband capability. We investigate near-Fermi-energy (EF) element-specific electronic and spin states of ferromagnetic van der Waals (vdW) metal Fe5GeTe2. The soft x-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (SX-ARPES) measurement provides spectroscopic evidence of localized Fe 3d band. We also find prominent hybridization between the localized Fe 3d band and the delocalized Ge/Te p bands. This picture is strongly supported from direct observation of the remarkable spin polarization of the ligand p bands near EF, using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements. The strength of XMCD signal from ligand element Te shows the highest value, as far as we recognize, among literature reporting finite XMCD signal for none-magnetic element in any systems. Combining SX-ARPES and elemental selective XMCD measurements, we collectively point an important role of giant spin polarization of the delocalized ligand Te states for realizing itinerant long-range ferromagnetism in Fe5GeTe2. Our finding provides a fundamental elemental selective view-point for understanding mechanism of itinerant ferromagnetism in low dimensional compounds, which also leads insight for designing exotic magnetic states by interfacial band engineering in heterostructures.

Magnetic transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) films have recently emerged as promising candidates to host novel magnetic phases relevant to next-generation spintronic devices. However, systematic control of the magnetization orientation, or anisotropy, and its thermal stability, characterized by Curie temperature (Tc) remains to be achieved in such films. Here we present self-intercalated epitaxial Cr1+{\delta}Te2 films as a platform for achieving systematic/smooth magnetic tailoring in TMD films. Using a molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) based technique, we have realized epitaxial Cr1+{\delta}Te2 films with smoothly tunable over a wide range (0.33-0.82), while maintaining NiAs-type crystal structure. With increasing {\delta}, we found monotonic enhancement of Tc from 160 to 350 K, and the rotation of magnetic anisotropy from out-of-plane to in-plane easy axis configuration for fixed film thickness. Contributions from conventional dipolar and orbital moment terms are insufficient to explain the observed evolution of magnetic behavior with {\delta}. Instead, ab initio calculations suggest that the emergence of antiferromagnetic interactions with {\delta}, and its interplay with conventional ferromagnetism, may play a key role in the observed trends. To our knowledge, this constitutes the first demonstration of tunable Tc and magnetic anisotropy across room temperature in TMD films, and paves the way for engineering novel magnetic phases for spintronic applications.

Modification of the gap at the Dirac point (DP) in antiferromagnetic (AFM) axion topological insulator MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ and its electronic and spin structure has been studied by angle- and spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) under laser excitation with variation of temperature (9-35~K), light polarization and photon energy. We have distinguished both a large (62-67~meV) and a reduced (15-18~meV) gap at the DP in the ARPES dispersions, which remains open above the N\'eel temperature ($T_\mathrm{N}=24.5$~K). We propose that the gap above $T_\mathrm{N}$ remains open due to short-range magnetic field generated by chiral spin fluctuations. Spin-resolved ARPES, XMCD and circular dichroism ARPES measurements show a surface ferromagnetic ordering for large-gap sample and significantly reduced effective magnetic moment for the reduced-gap sample. These effects can be associated with a shift of the topological DC state towards the second Mn layer due to structural defects and mechanical disturbance, where it is influenced by a compensated effect of opposite magnetic moments.

Recent developments of transition-edge sensors (TESs), based on extensive experience in ground-based experiments, have been making the sensor techniques mature enough for their application on future satellite CMB polarization experiments. LiteBIRD is in the most advanced phase among such future satellites, targeting its launch in Japanese Fiscal Year 2027 (2027FY) with JAXA's H3 rocket. It will accommodate more than 4000 TESs in focal planes of reflective low-frequency and refractive medium-and-high-frequency telescopes in order to detect a signature imprinted on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) by the primordial gravitational waves predicted in cosmic inflation. The total wide frequency coverage between 34GHz and 448GHz enables us to extract such weak spiral polarization patterns through the precise subtraction of our Galaxy's foreground emission by using spectral differences among CMB and foreground signals. Telescopes are cooled down to 5Kelvin for suppressing thermal noise and contain polarization modulators with transmissive half-wave plates at individual apertures for separating sky polarization signals from artificial polarization and for mitigating from instrumental 1/f noise. Passive cooling by using V-grooves supports active cooling with mechanical coolers as well as adiabatic demagnetization refrigerators. Sky observations from the second Sun-Earth Lagrangian point, L2, are planned for three years. An international collaboration between Japan, USA, Canada, and Europe is sharing various roles. The equivalent widths (W) of 565 spectral lines in the wavelength range of 4690--6870A were evaluated at 31 consecutive points from the solar disk center (mu=cos(theta)=1) to near the limb (mu=0.25) by applying the synthetic spectrum-fitting technique, in order to clarify the nature of their center--limb variations, especially the observed slope differing from line to line and its interpretation in terms of line properties. We found that the distribution of the gradient beta (= -dlog W/dlog mu) well correlates with that of dlog W/dlog T index, which means that the center-to-limb variation of W is determined mainly by the T-sensitivity of individual lines because the line-forming region shifts towards upper layers of lower T as we go toward the limb. Further, the key to understanding the behavior of dlog W/dlog T (depending on the temperature sensitivity of number population) is whether the considered species is in minor population stage or major population stage, by which the distribution of beta is explained in terms of differences in excitation potential and line strengths. While the effect of rotation on spectral lines is complicated in rapidly-rotating stars because of the appreciable gravity-darkening effect differing from line to line, it is possible to make use of this line-dependent complexity to separately determine the equatorial rotation velocity (ve) and the inclination angle (i) of rotational axis. Although line-widths of spectral lines were traditionally used for this aim, we tried in this study to apply the Fourier method, which utilizes the unambiguously determinable first-zero frequency (sigma1) in the Fourier transform of line profile. Equipped with this technique, we analyzed the profiles of HeI 4471 and MgII 4481 lines of six rapidly-rotating (vesini~150-300km/s) late B-type stars, while comparing them with the theoretical profiles simulated on a grid of models computed for various combination of (ve, i). According to our calculation, sigma1 tends to be larger than the classical value for given vesini. This excess progressively grows with an increase in ve, and is larger for the He line than the Mg line, which leads to sigma1He > sigma1Mg. It was shown that ve and i are separately determinable from the intersection of two loci (sets of solutions reproducing the observed sigma1 for each line) on the ve vs. i plane. Yet, line profiles alone are not sufficient for their unique discrimination, for which photometric information (such as colors) needs to be simultaneously employed., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in Mon. A very slight rotation-induced latitudinal temperature variation (presumably on the order of several Kelvin) on the solar surface is theoretically expected. While recent high-precision solar brightness observations reported its detection, confirmation by an alternative approach using the strengths of spectral lines is desirable, for which reducing the noise due to random fluctuation caused by atmospheric inhomogeneity is critical. Towards this difficult task, we carried out a pilot study of spectroscopically investigating the relative variation of temperature (T) at a number of points in the solar circumference region near to the limb (where latitude dependence should show up if any exists) based on the equivalent widths (W) of 28 selected lines in the 5367--5393A and 6075--6100A regions. Our special attention was paid to i) clarifying which kind of lines should be employed and ii) how much precision would be accomplished in practice. We found that lines with strong T-sensitivity (|log W/log T|) should be used and that very weak lines should be avoided because they inevitably suffer large relative fluctuations (Delta_W/W). Our analysis revealed that a precision of Delta_T/T ~ 0.003 (corresponding to ~15K) can be achieved at best by a spectral line with comparatively large |log W/log T|, though this can possibly be further improved if other more suitable lines are used. Accordingly, if many such favorable lines could be measured with sub-% precision of Delta_W/W and by averaging the resulting Delta_T/T from each line, the random noise would eventually be reduced down to <~1K and detection of very subtle amount of global T-gradient might be possible., Comment: 28 pages, 12 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in Solar Physics

We have studied the electronic structure of ferrimagnetic Mn2VAl single crystal by means of soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), X-ray absorption magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and resonant soft X-ray inelastic scattering (RIXS). We have successfully observed the XMCD signals for all constitute elements, supporting the spin polarized states at the Fermi level. The Mn $L_{2,3}$ XAS and XMCD spectra are reproduced by the spectral simulation based on density-functional theory (DFT), indicating itinerant character of the Mn 3d states. On the other hand, V $3d$ electrons are rather localized since the ionic model can qualitatively explain the V $L_{2,3}$ XAS and XMCD spectra as well as the local dd excitation revealed by V $L_3$ RIXS., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures

We describe a "super-Earth"-size ($2.30\pm0.15R_{\oplus}$) planet transiting an early K-type dwarf star in the Campaign 4 field observed by the K2 mission. The host star, EPIC 210363145, was identified as a member of the approximately 120-Myr-old Pleiades cluster based on its kinematics and photometric distance. It is rotationally variable and exhibits near-ultraviolet emission consistent with a Pleiades age, but its rotational period is ~20 d and its spectrum contains no H$\alpha$ emission nor the Li I absorption expected of Pleiades K dwarfs. Instead, the star is probably an interloper that is unaffiliated with the cluster, but younger (< 1 Gyr) than the typical field dwarf. We ruled out a false positive transit signal produced by confusion with a background eclipsing binary by adaptive optics imaging and a statistical calculation. Doppler radial velocity measurements limit the companion mass to <2 times that of Jupiter. Screening of the lightcurves of 1014 potential Pleiades candidate stars uncovered no additional planets. An injection-and-recovery experiment using the K2 Pleiades lightcurves with simulated planets, assuming a planet population like that in the Kepler prime field, predicts only 0.8-1.8 detections (vs. ~20 in an equivalent Kepler sample). The absence of Pleiades planet detections can be attributed to the much shorter monitoring time of K2 (80 days vs. 4 years), increased measurement noise due to spacecraft motion, and the intrinsic noisiness of the stars., Comment: submitted to MNRAS, comments welcome

Spectroscopic parameters (effective temperature, metallicity, etc) were determined for a large sample of ~100 red giants in the Kepler field, for which mass, radius, and evolutionary status had already been asteroseismologically established. These two kinds of spectroscopic and seismic information suffice to define the position on the "luminosity versus effective temperature" diagram and to assign an appropriate theoretical evolutionary track to each star. Making use of this advantage, we examined whether the stellar location on this diagram really matches the assigned track, which would make an interesting consistency check between theory and observation. It turned out that satisfactory agreement was confirmed in most cases (~90%, though appreciable discrepancies were seen for some stars such as higher-mass red-clump giants), suggesting that recent stellar evolution calculations are practically reliable. Since the relevant stellar age could also be obtained by this comparison, we derived the age-metallicity relation for these Kepler giants and found the following characteristics: (1) The resulting distribution is quite similar to what was previously concluded for FGK dwarfs. (2) The dispersion of metallicity progressively increases as the age becomes older. (3) Nevertheless, the maximum metallicity at any stellar age remains almost flat, which means the existence of super/near-solar metallicity stars in a considerably wide age range from ~(2--3)x 10^8~yr to ~10^10~yr., Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures, with on-line materials; accepted for publication in MNRAS

Thin films of the ferromagnetic metal SrRuO3 (SRO) show a varying easy magnetization axis depending on the epitaxial strain and undergo a metal-to-insulator transition with decreasing film thickness. We have investigated the magnetic properties of SRO thin films with varying thicknesses fabricated on SrTiO3(001) substrates by soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at the Ru M2,3 edge. Results have shown that, with decreasing film thickness, the film changes from ferromagnetic to non-magnetic around 3monolayer thickness, consistent with previous magnetization and magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements. The orbital magnetic moment perpendicular to the film was found to be ~ 0.1{\mu}B/Ru atom, and remained nearly unchanged with decreasing film thickness while the spin magnetic moment decreases. The electronic and magnetic properties of Fe atoms in the ferromagnetic semiconductor (In,Fe)As codoped with Be have been studied by x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at the Fe $L_{2,3}$ edge. The XAS and XMCD spectra showed simple spectral line shapes similar to Fe metal, but the ratio of the orbital and spin magnetic moments ($M_\mathrm{orb}$/$M_\mathrm{spin}$) estimated using the XMCD sum rules was significantly larger than that of Fe metal, indicating a significant orbital moment of Fe $3d$ electrons in (In,Fe)As:Be. The positive value of $M_\mathrm{orb}$/$M_\mathrm{spin}$ implies that the Fe $3d$ shell is more than half-filled, which arises from the hybridization of the Fe$^{3+}$ ($d^5$) state with the charge-transfer $d^6\underline{L}$ states, where $\underline{L}$ is a ligand hole in the host valence band. The XMCD intensity as a function of magnetic field indicated hysteretic behavior of the superparamagnetic-like component due to discrete ferromagnetic domains., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, 1 table

The lithium abundances for 378 G/K giants are derived with non-LTE correction considered. Among these, there are 23 stars that host planetary systems. The lithium abundance is investigated, as a function of metallicity, effective temperature, and rotational velocity, as well as the impact of a giant planet on G/K giants. The results show that the lithium abundance is a function of metallicity and effective temperature. The lithium abundance has no correlation with rotational velocity at vsini $<$ 10 km s$^{-1}$. Giants with planets present lower lithium abundance and slow rotational velocity (vsini $<$ 4 km s$^{-1}$). Our sample includes three Li-rich G/K giants, 36 Li-normal stars and 339 Li-depleted stars. The fraction of Li-rich stars in this sample agrees with the general rate of less than 1$\%$ in literature, and the stars that show normal amounts of Li are supposed to possess the same abundance at the current interstellar medium. For the Li-depleted giants, Li deficiency may have already taken place at the main sequence stage for many intermediate-mass (1.5-5 M$_{\odot}$) G/K giants. Finally, we present the lithium abundance and kinematic parameters for an enlarged sample of 565 giants using a compilation of literature, and confirm that the lithium abundance is a function of metallicity and effective temperature. With the enlarged sample, we investigate the differences between the lithium abundance in thin-/thick-disk giants, which indicate that the lithium abundance in thick-disk giants is more depleted than that in thin-disk giants.

We have investigated the spin and orbital magnetic moments of Fe in FePt nanoparticles in the $L$1$_{0}$-ordered phase coated with SiO$_{2}$ by x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements at the Fe $L_{\rm 2,3}$ absorption edges. Using XMCD sum rules, we evaluated the ratio of the orbital magnetic moment ($M_{\rm orb}$) to the spin magnetic moment ($M_{\rm spin}$) of Fe to be $M_{\rm orb}/M_{\rm spin}$ = 0.08. This $M_{\rm orb}/M_{\rm spin}$ value is comparable to the value (0.09) obtained for FePt nanoparticles prepared by gas phase condensation, and is larger than the values ($\sim$0.05) obtained for FePt thin films, indicating a high degree of $L$1$_{0}$ order. The hysteretic behavior of the FePt component of the magnetization was measured by XMCD. The magnetic coercivity ($H_{\rm c}$) was found to be as large as 1.8 T at room temperature, $\sim$3 times larger than the thin film value and $\sim$50 times larger than that of the gas phase condensed nanoparticles. The hysteresis curve is well explained by the Stoner-Wohlfarth model for non-interacting single-domain nanoparticles with the $H_{\rm c}$ distributed from 1 T to 5 T., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

The coercivity of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$ thin films can be enhanced by Ru substitution for Mn. In order to elucidate its mechanism, we performed soft x-ray absorption and magnetic circular dichroism measurements at the Ru M$_{2,3}$ and Mn L$_{2,3}$ edges. We found that the spin direction of Ru and Mn are opposite and that Ru has a finite orbital magnetic moment. Cluster-model analysis indicated that the finite orbital magnetic moment as well as the reduced spin moment of Ru result from local lattice distortion caused by epitaxial strain from the SrTiO$_3$ substrate in the presence of spin-orbit interaction., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables, accepted Applied Physics Letters

BiFeO$_3$ (BFO) shows both ferroelectricity and magnetic ordering at room temperature but its ferromagnetic component, which is due to spin canting, is negligible. Substitution of transition-metal atoms such as Co for Fe is known to enhance the ferromagnetic component in BFO. In order to reveal the origin of such magnetization enhancement, we performed soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) studies of BiFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$O$_3$ ({\it x} = 0 to 0.30) (BFCO) thin films grown on LaAlO$_3$(001) substrates. The XAS results indicated that the Fe and Co ions are in the Fe$^{3+}$ and Co$^{3+}$ states. The XMCD results showed that the Fe ions show ferromagnetism while the Co ions are antiferromagnetic at room temperature. The XAS and XMCD measurements also revealed that part of the Fe$^{3+}$ ions are tetrahedrally co-ordinated by oxygen ions but that the XMCD signals of the octahedrally coordinated Fe$^{3+}$ ions increase with Co content. The results suggest that an impurity phase such as the ferrimagnetic $\gamma$-Fe$_2$O$_3$ which exists at low Co concentration decreases with increasing Co concentration and that the ferromagnetic component of the Fe$^{3+}$ ion in the octrahedral crystal fields increases with Co concentration, probably reflecting the increased canting of the Fe$^{3+}$ ions., Comment: Accepted in J. The electronic structure of doped Mn in (Ga,Mn)As is studied by resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS). From configuration-interaction cluster-model calculations, the line shapes of the Mn $L_3$ RIXS spectra can be explained by $d$-$d$ excitations from the Mn$^{3+}$ ground state, dominated by charge-transferred states, rather than a Mn$^{2+}$ ground state. Unlike archetypical $d$-$d$ excitation, the peak widths are broader than the experimental energy resolution. We attribute the broadening to a finite lifetime of the $d$-$d$ excitations, which decay rapidly to electron-hole pairs in the host valence and conduction bands through hybridization of the Mn $3d$ orbital with the ligand band., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

The question of whether the Sun is peculiar within the class of solar-type stars has been the subject of active investigation over the past three decades. Although several solar twins have been found with stellar parameters similar to those of the Sun (albeit in a range of Li abundances and with somewhat different compositions), their rotation periods are unknown, except for 18 Sco, which is younger than the Sun and with a rotation period shorter than solar. It is difficult to obtain rotation periods for stars of solar age from ground-based observations, as a low activity level imply a shallow rotational modulation of their light curves. CoRoT has provided space-based long time series from which the rotation periods of solar twins as old as the Sun could be estimated. Based on high S/N high resolution spectroscopic observations gathered at the Subaru Telescope, we show that the star CoRoT ID 102684698 (CoRoT Sol 1) is a somewhat evolved solar twin with a low Li abundance. Its rotation period is 29 +- 5 days, compatible with its age (6.7 Gyr) and low lithium content A(Li) < 0.85 dex. Interestingly, our CoRoT solar twin seems to have enhanced abundances of the refractory elements with respect to the Sun, a typical characteristic of most nearby twins. With an aim of investigating the nature of evolution-induced mixing in the envelope of evolved intermediate-mass stars, we carried out an extensive spectroscopic study for 12 Cepheid variables of various pulsation periods (~2-16 days) to determine the photospheric abundances of C, N, O, and Na, which are the key elements for investigating how the H-burning products are salvaged from the interior, based on 122 high-dispersion echelle spectra (~10 per target) of wide wavelength coverage collected at Bohyunsan Astronomical Observatory. Having established the relevant atmospheric parameters corresponding to each phase spectroscopically from the equivalent widths of Fe I and Fe II lines, we derived C, N, O, and Na abundances from C I, O I, N I, and Na I lines by using the spectrum-synthesis fitting technique, while taking into account the non-LTE effect. The resulting abundances of these elements for 12 program stars turned out to show remarkably small star-to-star dispersions (<~0.1-0.2dex) without any significant dependence upon the pulsation period: near-solar Fe ([Fe/H] ~0.0), moderately underabundant C ([C/H] -0.3), appreciably overabundant N ([N/H] ~+0.4-0.5), and mildly supersolar Na ([Na/H] +0.2). We conclude the following implications from these observational facts: (1) These CNO abundance trends can be interpreted mainly as due to the canonical dredge-up of CN-cycled material, while any significant non-canonical deep mixing of ON-cycled gas is ruled out (though only a slight mixing may still be possible). (2) The mild but definite overabundance of Na suggests that the NeNa-cycle product is also dredged up. We have studied the electronic structure of the molecular ferromagnet $\beta$-Mn phthalocyanine ($\beta$-MnPc) in a polycrystalline form, which has been reported to show ferromagnetism at T$<$8.6 K, by x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). From the experimental results and subsequent cluster-model calculation, we find that the ferromagnetic Mn ion in $\beta$-MnPc is largely in the $^4$$E$$_g$ ground state arising from the ($e$$_{g}$)$^3$($b$$_{2g}$)$^1$($a$$_{1g}$)$^1$ [($d_{xz,yz}$)$^3$($d_{xy}$)$^1$($d_{z^{2}}$)$^1$] configuration of the Mn$^{2+}$ state. Considering that the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of MnPc with the $^4$$E$$_g$ ground state originates from the $a$$_{1g}$ orbital of the Mn$^{2+}$ ion, it is proposed that $a$$_{1g}$-$a$$_{1g}$ exchange coupling via the $\pi$ orbitals of the phthalocyanine ring plays a crucial role in the ferromagnetism of $\beta$-MnPc., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures

We have investigated the electronic structure of ZnO:Mn and ZnO:Mn,N thin films using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and resonance-photoemission spectroscopy. From the Mn 2$p$$\rightarrow3d$ XMCD results, it is shown that, while XMCD signals only due to paramagnetic Mn$^{2+}$ ions were observed in ZnO:Mn, nonmagnetic, paramagnetic and ferromagnetic Mn$^{2+}$ ions coexist in ZnO:Mn,N. XMCD signals of ZnO:Mn,N revealed that the localized Mn$^{2+}$ ground state and Mn$^{2+}$ state hybridized with ligand hole coexisted, implying $p$-$d$ exchange coupling. In the valence-band spectra, spectral weight near the Fermi level was suppressed, suggesting that interaction between magnetic moments in ZnO:Mn,N has localized nature., Comment: 4 figures

Quasiparticle interference induced by cobalt adatoms on the surface of the topological insulator Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ is studied by scanning tunneling microscopy, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. It is found that Co atoms are selectively adsorbed on top of Se sites and act as strong scatterers at the surface, generating anisotropic standing waves. A long-range magnetic order is found to be absent, and the surface state Dirac cone remains gapless. The anisotropy of the standing wave is ascribed to the heavily warped iso-energy contour of unoccupied states, where the scattering is allowed due to a non-zero out-of-plane spin., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures

Hot (OB) post-AGB stars are immediate progenitors of planetary nebulae (PNe). Very few hot post-AGB stars are known. Detecting new hot post-AGB candidates and follow-up multiwavelength studies will enable us to further understand the processes during the post-AGB evolution that lead to the formation of PNe. Case-Hamburg OB star surveys and their extension (LS, LSS, and LSE catalogues) and IRAS (point source) catalogues are good sources for detecting new hot post-AGB candidates from low resolution spectroscopy. Spectral types are determined from low resolution optical spectra of 44 stars selected from the LS, LSS, and LSE catalogues. Unlike the stars in the first paper, the stars in this paper were selected using criteria other than positional coincidence with an IRAS source with far IR (IRAS) colours similar to post-AGB supergiants and planetary nebulae. These included high galactic latitude, spectral types of O, B, A supergiants, emission lines in the spectrum and known spectral peculiarity. From the present study we find that LSS 1179, LSS 1222, LSS 1256, LSS 1276, LSS 1341, LSS 1394, LSS 2241, LSS 2429, LSS 4560, LSE 16, LSE 31, LSE 42, and LSE 67 to be new hot post-AGB candidates. The first high-resolution (R~50,000) optical spectrum of the B-type star, LS III +52 24, identified as the optical counterpart of the hot post-AGB candidate IRAS 22023+5249 (I22023) is presented. We report the detailed identifications of the observed absorption and emission features in the full wavelength range (4290-9015 A) as well as the atmospheric parameters and photospheric abundances (under the Local Thermodinamic Equilibrium approximation) for the first time. The nebular parameters (Te, Ne) are also derived. We estimate Teff=24,000 K, log g=3.0, xi=7 kms-1 and the derived abundances indicate a slightly metal-deficient evolved star with C/O<1. The observed P-Cygni profiles of hydrogen and helium clearly indicate on-going post-AGB mass loss. The presence of [N II] and [S II] lines and the non-detection of [O III] indicate that photoionisation has just started. The observed spectral features, large heliocentric radial velocity, atmospheric parameters, and chemical composition indicate that I22023 is an evolved post-AGB star belonging to the old disk population. The derived nebular parameters (Te=7000 K, Ne=1.2x104 cm-3) also suggest that I22023 may be evolving into a compact, young low-excitation Planetary Nebula. Our optical spectroscopic analysis together with the recent Spitzer detection of double-dust chemistry (the simultaneous presence of carbonaceous molecules and amorphous silicates) in I22023 and other B-type post-AGB candidates may point to a binary system with a dusty disk as the stellar origin common to the hot post-AGB stars with O-rich central stars., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS (22 pages, 4 figures, and 8 tables). arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:0707.0595

The recently discovered high temperature superconductor F-doped LaFeAsO and related compounds represent a new class of superconductors with the highest transition temperature (Tc) apart from the cuprates. The studies ongoing worldwide are revealing that these Fe-based superconductors are forming a unique class of materials that are interesting from the viewpoint of applications. To exploit the high potential of the Fe-based superconductors for device applications, it is indispensable to establish a process that enables the growth of high quality thin films. Efforts of thin film preparation started soon after the discovery of Fe-based superconductors, but none of the earlier attempts had succeeded in an in-situ growth of a superconducting film of LnFeAs(O,F) (Ln=lanthanide), which exhibits the highest Tc to date among the Fe-based superconductors. Here, we report on the successful growth of NdFeAs(O,F) thin films on GaAs substrates, which showed well-defined superconducting transitions up to 48 K without the need of an ex-situ heat treatment.
