11. Tm3+ Doped Multi-Ring Profile Single-Mode Fiber Laser for Application in the Eye-Safe Spectral Range

Abstract

New construction of a silica-based multi-ring profile of Tm3+ doped fiber laser is presented. Optimisation of both multi-ring refractive index profile and active ions distribution towards high beam quality mode propagation is a new approach in developing active fiber constructions. Using a system of layers forming the core allows controlling the dopant profile and, consequently, the emission properties of fiber lasers (power density, beam profile shape etc.). The preform fabricated using MCVD technology is presented. The refractive index profile (Δn = 9·10−3), EPMA-EDS analysis (Tm2O3 and Al2O3 concentration 0.56 and 5.2 wt% respectively), and excited state (3F4) decay time are shown. The double-clad fiber laser based on the Fabry-Perot resonator construction (17/240 μm core/cladding) was used for single-mode laser beam generation at a wavelength of 1938.8 nm (exc. @ 790 nm) with an FWHM bandwidth of 0.17 nm (1.68 W output power, M2x = 1.10, M2y = 1.23). For the optimized gain fiber (25/330 μm core/cladding diameters) length, the laser provided an output power of >5 W with a slope efficiency of ∼26%, determined to the absorbed pump power.

31. Mid-infrared supercontinuum generation of 1.14??W in a fluoroindate fiber pumped by a fast gain-switched and mode-locked thulium-doped fiber laser system

Abstract

We report the generation of a spectrally flat supercontinuum in a fluoroindate (InF_3) fiber with a maximum time-averaged output power of 1.14 W and a spectrum extended to 4.75 µm. The pump source was a fast gain-switched and semiconductor saturable absorber mirror mode-locked thulium Tm-doped fiber laser followed by a cascade of two Tm-doped fiber amplifiers. The repetition rates of the gain-switched pulses and mode-locked sub-pulses were 50 kHz and 111 MHz, respectively, whereas the duration of sub-pulses recorded within a gain-switched pulse envelope was ∼110ps. This home-built pump laser system provided an output average power of 2.45 W at a central wavelength of 2 µm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper on supercontinuum generation in an InF_3 fiber pumped by a fast gain-switched and mode-locked laser system. This approach is promising for further efficient continuum generation in the mid-infrared region.

37. Gain-Switched 2-μm Fiber Laser System Providing Kilowatt Peak-Power Mode-Locked Resembling Pulses and Its Application to Supercontinuum Generation in Fluoride Fibers.

Abstract

A fast gain-switched Tm-doped fiber laser and amplifier system providing stable 17-ns pulses with a 0.64-mJ energy and 35.6-kW peak power at 25 kHz is demonstrated. Then, self-starting mode-locked resembling pulses with duration of <200 ps, recorded within the gain-switched pulse envelope, were achieved in the same laser cavity. By amplifying the pulse train in a Tm-doped fiber amplifier, an average output power of 6.8 W at a ∼15-ns full width at half maximum gain-switch envelope and a ∼36.9-μJ subpulse with a peak power of up to 115.6 kW were demonstrated. To the best of our knowledge, this is the shortest gain-switched and mode-locked-like pulse as well as the highest peak-power that has been demonstrated in this type of laser system. A mid-infrared supercontinuum generation with a total output power of 2.45 W and a cutoff wavelength at 4.4 μm is also reported. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

38. Mid-infrared Supercontinuum Generation to ?4.7 ?m in a ZBLAN Fiber Pumped by an Optical Parametric Generator.

Abstract

We present mid-infrared (mid-IR) supercontinuum (SC) generation from a step-index fluorozirconate fiber pumped at 2.25 μm. When 70 ps pulses with a peak power of 128 kW were launched into a ZBLAN fiber with a zero dispersion wavelength at 1.603 μm, SC was extended to 4695 nm, with spectral flatness below 10 dB, in the 2.00–4.56 μm range. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time such a broad and flat mid-IR SC spectrum from a ZBLAN fiber pumped with ps pulses has been achieved. The SC evolution as a function of pump wavelength and pump pulse energy was also experimentally demonstrated. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
