The fracture of polymer materials is a multiscale process starting with the scission of a single molecular bond advancing to a site of failure within the bulk. Quantifying the bonds broken during this process remains a big challenge yet would help to understand the distribution and dissipation of macroscopic mechanical energy. We here show the design and synthesis of fluorogenic molecular optical force probes (mechanofluorophores) covering the entire visible spectrum in both absorption and emission. Their dual fluorescent character allows to track non‐broken and broken bonds in dissolved and bulk polymers by fluorescence spectroscopy and microscopy. Importantly, we develop an approach to determine the absolute number and relative fraction of intact and cleaved bonds with high local resolution. We anticipate that our mechanofluorophores in combination with our quantification methodology will allow to quantitatively describe fracture processes in materials ranging from soft hydrogels to high‐performance polymers., A new platform of dual fluorescent mechanofluorophores that display covalent bond scission during material breakage by changing their optical properties was synthesized. The absorption and emission characteristics were tuned to cover the entire visible spectrum. Using photon quantitative confocal fluorescence microscopy, these new mechanofluorophores enabled the quantification of bond scission events with μm resolution.

The policy challenges presented here have been derived from the empirical results obtained from the WORKS quantitative and qualitative data. Thus they have been informed by the analysis of survey results and particularly the workplace level analyses on restructuring across value chains carried out in the organisational and occupational case studies. They have also benefited from the analyses carried out in the thematic papers, which laid the foundation for identifying policy challenges. In the complex and diverse area of policy presented here, we first set out to situate our particular theme in a larger conceptual landscape and address the following issues: - What current policy debates surround the issue under investigation? - What institutions or structures currently exist that are mainly responsible for regulating the topic? - What themes emerge from the WORKS case studies? What deviations are there between policy and practice? What challenges for policy emerge? - Which levels of policy, which actors should address the challenges? Policy formulation is refracted through the different social structural frameworks in different countries. Institutional and historical contexts shape these structures. The contexts also shape expectations, norms and discourse in which policy is made (O´Reilly, Cebriàn & Lallement, 2000). Thus systems differ in terms of their exclusivity, closure or segmentation. Corporatist systems in which some workers and sectors are well-regulated tend to protect core workers. Here group identity and divisions between labour would be the standard and discourse of the policy context. Liberal systems are characterised by emphasis on individual initiative and less regulation, so that the discourse surrounds individual ability and attractiveness on the labour market.

Σκοπός της έρευνας αυτής είναι η κριτική φεμινιστική ανάλυση του τρόπου με τον οποίο οι συνδικαλιστικές και εργοδοτικές οργανώσεις της Κύπρου αντιμετώπισαν διαχρονικά το θέμα της σεξουαλικής παρενόχλησης στον εργασιακό χώρο, με βασικό άξονα ανάλυσης την οργανωσιακή θεωρία (εξουσία, δομή, οργάνωση). Συγκεκριμένα, μελετήθηκαν, μέσω ποιοτικής έρευνας, οι εμπειρίες και οι αντιλήψεις των γυναικών θυμάτων σεξουαλικής παρενόχλησης σχετικά με τον χειρισμό καταγγελιών τους από τις συνδικαλιστικές τους οργανώσεις, και ο τρόπος με τον οποίο οι συνδικαλιστικές και εργοδοτικές οργανώσεις αιτιολογούν τους χειρισμούς τους σε περιπτώσεις φαινομένων και καταγγελιών σεξουαλικής παρενόχλησης στον εργασιακό χώρο της Κύπρου. Απώτερος στόχος ήταν η καταγραφή και ανάλυση συστημικών και οργανωσιακών παραγόντων που αποτελούν εμπόδιο στην αντιμετώπιση της σεξουαλικής παρενόχλησης. Η έρευνα καταγράφει το θεσμικό πλαίσιο που διέπει την πρόληψη και αντιμετώπιση της σεξουαλικής παρενόχλησης και της έμφυλης βίας γενικότερα, σε διεθνές, ευρωπαϊκό και εθνικό επίπεδο, σε συνδυασμό με στοιχεία και δεδομένα κρατών μελών της ΕΕ με προοδευτικές νομοθεσίες και πρακτικές πρόληψης και καταπολέμησης του φαινομένου. Επιπλέον, η μελέτη εξετάζει τη συμβολή των εργοδοτικών και συνδικαλιστικών οργανώσεων στην προσπάθεια εξάλειψης του προβλήματος της σεξουαλικής παρενόχλησης, αλλά και την αποδυνάμωση και αποδόμηση παρωχημένων αντιλήψεων και κοινωνικών στερεοτύπων της πατριαρχικής κυπριακής κουλτούρας. Συνδέοντας τη φεμινιστική θεωρία με την έμφυλη οργανωσιακή κουλτούρα, καταδεικνύεται μέσα από την παρούσα έρευνα ότι η κουλτούρα των συνδικαλιστικών και εργοδοτικών οργανώσεων της Κύπρου, η οποία διαμορφώνεται και επηρεάζεται από την ανώτερη διοίκηση/ηγεσία δεν περιλαμβάνει στις προτεραιότητές της ούτε την πρόληψη και αντιμετώπιση της σεξουαλικής παρενόχλησης, ούτε και κατ’ επέκταση την προώθηση της έμφυλης ισότητας στον εργασιακό χώρο. Η κουλτούρα των συνδικαλιστικών και εργοδοτικών οργανώσεων επηρεάζεται από εσωτερικούς, εξωτερικούς και οργανωσιακούς παράγοντες και αναλύοντας αυτήν την κουλτούρα με φεμινιστική οπτική, παρατηρείται ότι οι εσωτερικοί παράγοντες αφορούν στις πατριαρχικές δομές τους με τους άνδρες να κατέχουν και να θεσπίζουν την εξουσία και τις γυναίκες και τα προβλήματα που αντιμετωπίζουν να περιθωριοποιούνται. Ταυτόχρονα, οι εξωτερικοί παράγοντες αφορούν στην πατριαρχική κυπριακή κοινωνία με τις κυρίαρχες έμφυλες, αναχρονιστικές, κοινωνικές πρακτικές. Συγκεκριμένα υπάρχει μια έντονη έμφυλη σχηματοποίηση των ιεραρχιών, όπου οι γυναίκες υπο-εκπροσωπούνται σε όλα τα κέντρα λήψης αποφάσεων με εξαιρετικά χαμηλά ποσοστά υπουργών, βουλευτριών, δημοτικών και κοινοτικών συμβούλων, αλλά και σε διευθυντικές θέσεις στον δημόσιο και ιδιωτικό τομέα. Στην έρευνα καταδεικνύεται, ότι τα θύματα σεξουαλικής παρενόχλησης όχι απλά δεν είχαν την απαιτούμενη στήριξη από τις συνδικαλιστικές τους οργανώσεις τους, αλλά αντιμετωπίστηκαν με αδιαφορία τόσο στην αναφορά του προβλήματος, όσο και στη μετέπειτα εξέλιξη της καταγγελίας τους. Η έρευνα λοιπόν, καταδεικνύει πως οι εργοδοτικές και συνδικαλιστικές οργανώσεις της Κύπρου δεν τόλμησαν να συγκρουστούν με την εγκαθιδρυμένη πατριαρχία και να «υποχρεώσουν» το κοινωνικό-πολιτικό σύστημα να αναγνωρίσει από τη μια την αξία της έμφυλης ισότητας στην απασχόληση και από την άλλη να προχωρήσει σε αλλαγές που να μπορούν να διασφαλίζουν την ουσιαστική ισότητα. Η έρευνα καταλήγει σε συγκεκριμένες προτάσεις πολιτικής προς τις συνδικαλιστικές και εργοδοτικές οργανώσεις. The purpose of this research is to present a critical feminist analysis of the way Cypriot trade unions and employers’ organizations, have dealt with the issue of sexual harassment in the workplace over the years, focusing on the organizational theory model (power, structure, organization). Specifically, through qualitative research, this dissertation paper examines the experiences and perceptions of women victims of sexual harassment in relation to the handling of their complaints by their trade unions. It also looks into how these organizations justify their actions in handling sexual harassment complaints in Cyprus’s labour market. The goal overall is to identify and analyze systemic and organizational factors that hinder effective handing of sexual harassment cases. The research documents the institutional framework for the prevention and combatting of sexual harassment and gender-based violence at international, European and national level. In addition, it presents data from EU Member States with progressive legislation and practices enacted to prevent and combat this phenomenon. In addition, the study examines the contribution of employers’ and trade unions' efforts to eliminate the problem of sexual harassment, and to effectively contest obsolete perceptions and gender stereotypes of patriarchal Cypriot culture. Through the lens of feminist theory in organizational culture, the study argues that the culture of trade unions and employers' organizations in Cyprus, is shaped and influenced by senior management/leadership, and does not include in its priorities the issue of sexual harassment or even the promotion of gender equality in the workplace. The culture of trade unions and employers’ organizations is influenced by internal, external and organizational factors. Analyzing this culture from a feminist perspective, it is observed that internal factors relate to patriarchal structures with men possessing and establishing power, while women facing gender related issues are marginalized. At the same time, external factors are related to the patriarchal Cyprus society with dominant sexist and anachronistic practices. In particular, there is a strong gender hierarchy, where women are under-represented in all decision-making bodies with extremely low rates in ministerial, parliamentary, municipal and local community positions. The same low percentage of women’s representation are also true for managerial and director positions in both the public and private sectors. Findings from this field research indicate that victims of sexual harassment did not receive adequate support from their trade unions, and were treated with indifference both when the complaint was filed but also in pursuing an inquiry of their complaint. The study shows that the employers' and trade unions of Cyprus do not challenge the established patriarchy and do not compel the socio-political system to recognize the value of gender equality both in employment and in the socio-economic life in Cyprus. The study ends with policy recommendations that can ensure not only formal legal gender equality but also substantive gender equality by strengthening institutions and policy-making in the context of participatory democracy and the promotion of gender equality in employment and in Cypriot society overall.
