Search

The development of superconducting electronics requires careful characterization of the components that make up electronic circuits. Superconducting weak links are the building blocks of most superconducting electronics components and are characterized by highly nonlinear current-to-phase relations (CPR), which are often not perfectly known. Recent research has found that the Josephson diode effect (JDE) can be related to the high harmonic content of the current-to-phase relation of the weak links embedded in superconducting interferometers. This makes the JDE a natural tool for exploring the harmonic content of weak links beyond single-harmonic CPR. In this study, we present the theoretical model and experimental characterization of a double-loop superconducting quantum interference device (DL-SQUID) that embeds all-metallic superconductor-normal metal-superconductor junctions. The proposed device exhibits the JDE due to the interference of the supercurrents of three weak links in parallel, and this feature can be adjusted through two magnetic fluxes, which act as experimental knobs. We carry out a theoretical study of the device in terms of the relative weight of the interferometer arms and the experimental characterization concerning flux tunability and temperature.

Heat engines are key devices that convert thermal energy into usable energy. Strong thermoelectricity, at the basis of electrical heat engines, is present in superconducting spin tunnel barriers at cryogenic temperatures where conventional semiconducting or metallic technologies cease to work. Here we realize a superconducting spintronic heat engine consisting of a ferromagnetic insulator/superconductor/insulator/ferromagnet tunnel junction (EuS/Al/AlO$_x$/Co). The efficiency of the engine is quantified for bath temperatures ranging from 25 mK up to 800 mK, and at different load resistances. Moreover, we show that the sign of the generated thermoelectric voltage can be inverted according to the parallel or anti-parallel orientation of the two ferromagnetic layers, EuS and Co. This realizes a thermoelectric spin valve controlling the sign and strength of the Seebeck coefficient, thereby implementing a thermoelectric memory cell. Diodes are key elements for electronics, optics, and detection. The search for a material combination providing the best performances for the required application is continuously ongoing. Here, we present a superconducting spintronic tunnel diode based on the strong spin filtering and splitting generated by an EuS thin film between a superconducting Al and a normal metal Cu layer. The Cu/EuS/Al tunnel junction achieves a large rectification (up to $\sim40$\%) already for a small voltage bias ($\sim 200$ $\mu$V) thanks to the small energy scale of the system: the Al superconducting gap. With the help of an analytical theoretical model we can link the maximum rectification to the spin polarization of the barrier and describe the quasi-ideal Schottky-diode behavior of the junction. This cryogenic spintronic rectifier is promising for the application in highly-sensitive radiation detection for which two different configurations are evaluated. Ferromagnetic insulators can induce a strong exchange field in an adjacent superconductor via the magnetic proximity effect. This manifests as spin-splitting of the BCS density of states of the superconductor, an important ingredient for numerous superconducting spintronics applications and the realization of Majorana fermions. A crucial parameter that determines the magnitude of the induced spin-splitting in FI/S bilayers is the thickness of the S layer $d$: In very thin samples, the superconductivity is suppressed by the strong magnetism. By contrast, in very thick samples, the spin splitting is absent at distances away from the interface. In this work, we calculate the density of states and critical field of FI/S bilayers of arbitrary thickness. From here, we determine the range of parameters of interest for applications, where the exchange field and superconductivity coexist. We compare our theory with the tunneling spectroscopy measurements in several EuS/Al/AlO$_x$/Al samples. If the Al film in contact with the EuS is thinner than a certain critical value, we do not observe superconductivity, whereas, in thicker samples, we find evidence of a first-order phase transition induced by an external field. The complete transition is preceded by a regime in which normal and superconducting regions coexist. We attribute this mixed phase to inhomogeneities of the Al film thickness and the presence of superparamagnetic grains at the EuS/Al interface with different switching fields. Our results demonstrate on the one hand, the important role of the S layer thickness, which is particularly relevant for the fabrication of high-quality samples suitable for applications. On the other hand, the agreement between theory and experiment demonstrates the accuracy of our theory, which, originally developed for homogeneous situations, is generalized to highly inhomogeneous systems., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

In a family of experiments carried on all-metallic supercurrent nano-transistors a surprising gating effect has been recently shown. These include the full suppression of the critical supercurrent, the increase of quasiparticle population, the manipulation of the superconducting phase, and the broadening of the switching current distributions. Aside from the high potential for future applications, these findings raised fundamental questions on the origin of these phenomena. To date, two complementary hypotheses are under debate: an electrostatically-triggered orbital polarization at the superconductor surface, or the injection of highly-energetic quasiparticles extracted from the gate. Here, we tackle this crucial issue via a fully suspended gate-controlled Ti nano-transistor. Our geometry allows to eliminate any direct injection of quasiparticles through the substrate thereby making cold electron field emission through the vacuum the only possible charge transport mechanism. With the aid of a fully numerical 3D model in combination with the observed phenomenology and thermal considerations we can rule out, with any realistic likelihood, the occurrence of cold electron field emission. Excluding these two trivial phenomena is pivotal in light of understanding the microscopic nature of gating effect in superconducting nanostructures, which represents an unsolved puzzle in contemporary superconductivity. Superconducting computing promises enhanced computational power in both classical and quantum approaches. Yet, scalable and fast superconducting memories are not implemented. Here, we propose a fully superconducting memory cell based on the hysteretic phase-slip transition existing in long aluminum nanowire Josephson junctions. Embraced by a superconducting ring, the memory cell codifies the logic state in the direction of the circulating persistent current, as commonly defined in flux-based superconducting memories. But, unlike the latter, the hysteresis here is a consequence of the phase-slip occurring in the long weak link and associated to the topological transition of its superconducting gap. This disentangle our memory scheme from the large-inductance constraint, thus enabling its miniaturization. Moreover, the strong activation energy for phase-slip nucleation provides a robust topological protection against stochastic phase-slips and magnetic-flux noise. These properties make the Josephson phase-slip memory a promising solution for advanced superconducting classical logic architectures or flux qubits., Comment: 14 pages, 10 color figures

A battery is a classical apparatus which converts a chemical reaction into a persistent voltage bias able to power electronic circuits. Similarly, a phase battery is a quantum equipment which provides a persistent phase bias to the wave function of a quantum circuit. It represents a key element for quantum technologies based on quantum coherence. Unlike the voltage batteries, a phase battery has not been implemented so far, mainly because of the natural rigidity of the quantum phase that, in typical quantum circuits, is imposed by the parity and time-reversal symmetry constrains. Here we report on the first experimental realization of a phase battery in a hybrid superconducting circuit. It consists of an n-doped InAs nanowire with unpaired-spin surface states and proximitized by Al superconducting leads. We find that the ferromagnetic polarization of the unpaired-spin states is efficiently converted into a persistent phase bias $\varphi_0$ across the wire, leading to the anomalous Josephson effect. By applying an external in-plane magnetic field a continuous tuning of $\varphi_0$ is achieved. This allows the charging and discharging of the quantum phase battery and reveals the symmetries of the anomalous Josephson effect predicted by our theoretical model. Our results demonstrate how the combined action of spin-orbit coupling and exchange interaction breaks the phase rigidity of the system inducing a strong coupling between charge, spin and superconducting phase. A superconductor with a spin-split excitation spectrum behaves as an ideal ferromagnetic spin-injector in a tunneling junction. It was theoretical predicted that the combination of two such spin-split superconductors with independently tunable magnetizations, may be used as an ideal $absolute$ spin-valve. Here we report on the first switchable superconducting spin-valve based on two EuS/Al bilayers coupled through an aluminum oxide tunnel barrier. The spin-valve shows a relative resistance change between the parallel and antiparallel configuration of the EuS layers up to 900% that demonstrates a highly spin-polarized currents through the junction. We consider a Josephson junction consisting of superconductor/ferromagnetic insulator (S/FI) bilayers as electrodes which proximizes a nearby 2D electron gas. By starting from a generic Josephson hybrid planar setup we present an exhaustive analysis of the the interplay between the superconducting and magnetic proximity effects and the conditions under which the structure undergoes transitions to a non-trivial topological phase. We address the 2D bound state problem using a general transfer matrix approach that reduces the problem to an effective 1D Hamiltonian. This allows for straightforward study of topological properties in different symmetry classes. As an example we consider a narrow channel coupled with multiple ferromagnetic superconducting fingers, and discuss how the Majorana bound states can be spatially controlled by tuning the superconducting phases. In their original formulation of superconductivity, the London brothers predicted the exponential suppression of an $electrostatic$ field inside a superconductor over the so-called London penetration depth, $\lambda_L$. Despite a few experiments indicating hints of perturbation induced by electrostatic fields, no clue has been provided so far on the possibility to manipulate metallic superconductors via field-effect. Here we report field-effect control of the supercurrent in $all$-metallic transistors made of different Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superconducting thin films. At low temperature, our field-effect transistors (FETs) show a monotonic decay of the critical current under increasing electrostatic field up to total quenching for gate voltage values as large as $\pm 40$V in titanium-based devices. This $bipolar$ field effect persists up to $\sim 85\%$ of the critical temperature ($\sim 0.41$K), and in the presence of sizable magnetic fields. A similar behavior was observed in aluminum thin film FETs. A phenomenological theory accounts for our observations, and points towards the interpretation in terms of an electric-field-induced perturbation propagating inside the superconducting film. In our understanding, this affects the pairing potential and quenches the supercurrent. We suggest a new type of an ultrasensitive detector of electromagnetic fields exploiting the giant thermoelectric effect recently found in superconductor/ferromagnet hybrid structures. Compared to other types of superconducting detectors where the detected signal is based on variations of the detector impedance, the thermoelectric detector has the advantage of requiring no external driving fields. This becomes especially relevant in multi-pixel detectors where the number of bias lines and the heating induced by them becomes an issue. We propose different material combinations to implement the detector and provide a detailed analysis of its sensitivity and speed. In particular, we perform to our knowledge the first proper noise analysis that includes the cross correlation between heat and charge current noise and thereby describes also thermoelectric detectors with a large thermoelectric figure of merit., Comment: 7 pages + appendix; 7 figures

A ferromagnetic insulator attached to a superconductor is known to induce an exchange splitting of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) singularity by a magnitude proportional to the magnetization, and penetrating into the superconductor to a depth comparable with the superconducting coherence length. We study this long-range magnetic proximity effect in EuS/Al bilayers and find that the exchange splitting of the BCS peaks is present already in the unpolarized state of the ferromagnetic insulator (EuS), and is being further enhanced when magnetizing the sample by a magnetic field. The measurement data taken at the lowest temperatures feature a high contrast which has allowed us to relate the line shape of the split BCS conductance peaks to the characteristic magnetic domain structure of the EuS layer in the unpolarized state. These results pave the way to engineering triplet superconducting correlations at domain walls in EuS/Al bilayers. Furthermore, the hard gap and clear splitting observed in our tunneling spectroscopy measurements indicate that EuS/Al bilayers are excellent candidates for substituting strong magnetic fields in experiments studying Majorana bound states., Comment: 9 pages, 4 color figures

We present an exhaustive theoretical analysis of a double-loop Josephson proximity interferometer, as the one recently realized by Strambini et al. for the control of the Andreev spectrum via an external magnetic field. This system, called $\omega$-SQUIPT, consists of a T-shaped diffusive normal metal (N) attached to three superconductors (S) forming a double loop configuration. By using the quasiclassical Green function formalism, we calculate the local normalized density of states, the Josephson currents through the device and the dependence of the former on the length of the junction arms, the applied magnetic field and the S/N interface transparencies. We show that by tuning the fluxes through the double loop, the system undergoes transitions from a gapped to a gapless state. We also evaluate the Josephson currents flowing in the different arms as a function of magnetic fluxes and explore the quasi-particle transport, by considering a metallic probe tunnel-coupled to the Josephson junction and calculating its I-V characteristics. Finally, we study the performances of the $\omega$-SQUIPT and its potential applications, by investigating its electrical and magnetometric properties., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures

Multi-terminal superconducting Josephson junctions based on the proximity effect offer the bright opportunity to tailor non trivial quantum states in nanoscale weak-links. These structures can realize exotic topologies in multidimensions as, for example, artificial topological superconductors able to support Majorana bound states, and pave the way to emerging quantum technologies and future quantum information schemes. Here, we report the first realization of a three-terminal Josephson interferometer based on a proximized nanosized weak-link. Our tunneling spectroscopy measurements reveal transitions between gapped (i.e., insulating) and gapless (i.e., conducting) states, those being controlled by the phase configuration of the three superconducting leads connected to the junction. We demonstrate the $topological$ nature of these transitions: a gapless state necessarily occurs between two gapped states of different topological index, very much like the interface between two insulators of different topology is necessarily conducting. The topological numbers characterizing such gapped states are given by superconducting phase windings over the two loops forming the Josephson interferometer. Since these gapped states cannot be transformed to one another continuously withouth passing through a gapless condition, these are topologically $protected$. Our observation of the gapless state is pivotal for enabling phase engineering of more sophisticated artificial topological materials realizing Weyl points or the anomalous Josephson effect., Comment: 10 pages, 8 color figures

The Josephson effect is a fundamental quantum phenomenon consisting in the appearance of a dissipationless supercurrent in a weak link between two superconducting (S) electrodes. While the mechanism leading to the Josephson effect is quite general, i.e., Andreev reflections at the interface between the S electrodes and the weak link, the precise physical details and topology of the junction drastically modify the properties of the supercurrent. Specifically, a strong enhancement of the critical supercurrent $I_C$ is expected to occur when the topology of the junction allows the emergence of Majorana bound states. Here we report charge transport measurements in mesoscopic Josephson junctions formed by InAs nanowires and Ti/Al superconducting leads. Our main observation is a colossal enhancement of the critical supercurrent induced by an external magnetic field applied perpendicular to the substrate. This striking and anomalous supercurrent enhancement cannot be ascribed to any known conventional phenomenon existing in Josephson junctions including, for instance, Fraunhofer-like diffraction or a $\pi$-state behavior. We also investigate an unconventional model related to inhomogenous Zeeman field caused by magnetic focusing, and note that it can not account for the observed behaviour. Finally, we consider these results in the context of topological superconductivity, and show that the observed $I_C$ enhancement is compatible with a magnetic field-induced topological transition of the junction., Comment: 9 pages, 4 color figures

Nonlocality is a key feature discriminating quantum and classical physics. Quantum-interference phenomena, such as Young's double slit experiment, are one of the clearest manifestations of nonlocality, recently addressed as $dynamical$ to specify its origin in the quantum equations of motion. It is well known that loss of dynamical nonlocality can occur due to (partial) collapse of the wavefunction due to a measurement, such as which-path detection. However, alternative mechanisms affecting dynamical nonlocality have hardly been considered, although of crucial importance in many schemes for quantum information processing. Here, we present a fundamentally different pathway of losing dynamical nonlocality, demonstrating that the detailed geometry of the detection scheme is crucial to preserve nonlocality. By means of a solid-state quantum-interference experiment we quantify this effect in a diffusive system. We show that interference is not only affected by decoherence, but also by a loss of dynamical nonlocality based on a local reduction of the number of quantum conduction channels of the interferometer. With our measurements and theoretical model we demonstrate that this mechanism is an intrinsic property of quantum dynamics. We propose and analyze a mesoscopic Josephson junction consisting of two ferromagnetic insulator-superconductors (FI-Ss) coupled through a normal metal (N) layer. The Josephson current of the junction is non-trivially affected by the spin-splitting field induced by the FIs in the two superconductors. In particular, it shows sizeable enhancement by increasing the amplitude of the exchange field ($h_{ex}$) and displays a switchable current-phase relation which depends on the relative orientation of $h_{ex}$ in the FIs. In a realistic EuS/Al-based setup this junction can be exploited as a high-resolution threshold sensor for the magnetic field as well as an on-demand tunable kinetic inductor., Comment: 4.5 pages, 5 color figures

We propose a phase-controlled heat-flux quantum valve based on the proximity effect driven by a superconducting quantum interference proximity transistor (SQUIPT). Its operation relies on the phase-dependent quasiparticle density of states in the Josephson weak-link of the SQUIPT which controls thermal transport across the device. In a realistic Al/Cu-based setup the structure can provide efficient control of thermal current inducing temperature swings exceeding $\sim100$~mK, and flux-to-temperature transfer coefficients up to $\sim 500$~mK/$\Phi_0$ below 100~mK. The nanovalve performances improve by lowering the bath temperature, making the proposed structure a promising building-block for the implementation of coherent caloritronic devices operating below 1~K.

Phase-coherent acoustoelectric transport is reported.Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in the acoustoelectric current with visibility exceeding 100% were observed in mesoscopic GaAs rings as a function of an external magnetic field at cryogenic temperatures. A theoretical analysis of the acoustoelectric transport in ballistic devices is proposed to model experimental observations. Our findings highlight a close analogy between acoustoelectric transport and thermoelectric properties in ballistic devices.

Three different implementations of interaction-free measurements (IFMs) in solid-state nanodevices are discussed. The first one is based on a series of concatenated Mach-Zehnder interferometers, in analogy to optical-IFM setups. The second one consists of a single interferometer and concatenation is achieved in the time domain making use of a quantized electron emitter. The third implementation consists of an asymmetric Aharonov-Bohm ring. For all three cases we show that the presence of a dephasing source acting on one arm of the interferometer can be detected without degrading the coherence of the measured current. We show that an Aharonov-Bohm (AB) ring with asymmetric electron injection can act as a coherent detector of electron dephasing. The presence of a dephasing source in one of the two arms of a moderately-to-highly asymmetric ring changes the response of the system from total reflection to complete transmission while preserving the coherence of the electrons propagating from the ring, even for strong dephasing. Multi-terminal Aharonov-Bohm (AB) rings are ideal building blocks for quantum networks (QNs) thanks to their ability to map input states into controlled coherent superpositions of output states. We report on experiments performed on three-terminal GaAs/Al_(x)Ga_(1-x)As AB devices and compare our results with a scattering-matrix model including Lorentz forces and decoherence. Our devices were studied as a function of external magnetic field (B) and gate voltage at temperatures down to 350 mK. The total output current from two terminals while applying a small bias to the third lead was found to be symmetric with respect to B with AB oscillations showing abrupt phase jumps between 0 and pi at different values of gate voltage and at low magnetic fields, reminiscent of the phase-rigidity constraint due to Onsager-Casimir relations. Individual outputs show quasi-linear dependence of the oscillation phase on the external electric field. We emphasize that a simple scattering-matrix approach can not model the observed behavior and propose an improved description that can fully describe the observed phenomena. Furthermore, we shall show that our model can be successfully exploited to determine the range of experimental parameters that guarantee a minimum oscillation visibility, given the geometry and coherence length of a QN., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures
