Abstract

The reign of England's Mary Tudor has long been examined by historians for her regime's extensive use of propaganda to attempt to convert her populace from Protestantism to Catholicism. These explorations, however, ignore the regime's employment of other communications strategies, particularly public relations, as key components of its conversion efforts. This paper furthers the discussion of how propaganda and public relations are differentiated and examines and reinterprets the Marian government's activities from a public relations perspective with the goal of continuing to establish a more comprehensive history of public relations and to explore the impact of public relations activities versus pure propagandistic techniques. Abstract

The past few years have seen an increase in public support for the LGBTQ+ community from large, influential companies that have historically marginalized queer folks and contributed to their erasure on media platforms. This thesis aims to analyze and critique how these fortune 500 companies use discourse and symbols to strategically communicate with LGBTQ+ audiences on social media. Few studies exist that investigate the link between LGBTQ+ support and social media marketing for fortune 500 companies. This thesis addresses the literature gap by critically analyzing how major companies use LGBTQ+ activism as a social media marketing tactic. A critical discourse analysis was conducted on 90 Instagram posts from consumer-facing Fortune 500 companies with 750,000 followers or more. The findings demonstrated that two strategies were used to communicate with LGBTQ+ audiences: brand-focused appeals and person-focused appeals. Brand-focused appeals, employed by 66% of companies in the sample, used images of company products and logos, and promotional language. Person-focused appeals, utilized by 34% of companies, used images of LGBTQ+ people as the main subject of the post and discourse that highlighted the queer experience. Person-focused appeals were found to be more authentic but still lacking in inclusiveness and normalization. These results suggest that communications practitioners invested in successfully communicating with LGBTQ+ audiences should use person-focused appeals year-round that highlight the true diversity of the LGBTQ+ community.

Abstract

This case study documents a large, 4-year university’s transition to virtual instruction fromJanuary 2020 to June 2021 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Using the situational crisiscommunication theoretical framework (Coombs, 2019), this analysis explores the university’s studentcommunication response to the pandemic and a primarily virtual academic year. Based on email communications, social media posts, and interviews, there is evidence that students have new expectations for their universities of how to act and support them in a crisis of a global scale. Implications for how universities should respond to future crises using their COVID-19 pandemic experience are discussed. The case study also includes recommendations on managing future crisis communication at institutions and how to engage students as a stakeholder group on a university campus.
