A fluid is an isotropic medium that is to say that all of its physical properties are identical in all aspects. On the contrary, when we consider the acoustic aspect, the parameters which characterize a solution are completely different and depend on the type and the composition of that solution. In this study we show that the acoustic parameters (ultrasonic velocity, compressibility, impedance and attenuation) of saline solution are based on the salt concentration. The results are very clear, very little change in its concentration leads to a variation of these parameters. The database thus constituted can, by propagating an ultrasonic signal in a solution of unknown concentration, determine the exact concentration of salt in that solution. The result can be achieved with any type of solution just by providing its data base of its acoustic aspect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent decades an extensive mortality and decline of Quercus suber populations mainly caused by Phytophthora cinnamomi has been observed. In the current study, a chestnut gene homologous to ginkbilobin-2 (Cast_Gnk2-like), which in Ginkgo biloba codifies an antifungal protein, was transferred into cork oak somatic embryos of three different embryogenic lines by Agrobacterium mediated transformation. The transformation efficiency varied on the genotype from 2.5 to 9.2%, and a total of 22 independent transformed lines were obtained. The presence of Cast_Gnk2-like gene in transgenic embryos was verified in all lines by PCR. The number of transgene copies was estimated by qPCR in embryogenic lines with high proliferation ability and it varied between 1 and 5. In addition, the expression levels of Cast_Gnk2-like gene were determined in the embryogenic lines, with higher levels in lines derived from the genotype ALM6-WT. Transgenic plants were obtained from all transgenic lines and evaluated after cold storage of the somatic embryos for 2 months and subsequent transfer to germination medium. Phytophthora cinnamomi Rands is a highly prevalent phytopathogen worldwide, ranking among the top ten in terms of distribution. It inflicts crown rot, canker, and root rot on numerous plant species, significantly impacting the biodiversity of both flora and fauna within affected environments. With a host range spanning over 5,000 species, including important plants like Quercus suber, Quercus ilex, Castanea sativa, and commercially significant crops such as avocado (Persea americana), maize (Zea mays), and tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), Phytophthora cinnamomi poses a substantial threat to agriculture and ecosystems. The efficient dissemination of the oomycete relies on its short-lived asexually motile zoospores, which depend on water currents to infect host roots. However, managing these zoospores in the laboratory has long been challenging due to the complexity of the life cycle. Current protocols involve intricate procedures, including alternating cycles of growth, drought, and flooding. Unfortunately, these artificial conditions often result in a rapid decline in virulence, necessitating additional steps to maintain infectivity during cultivation. In our research, we sought to address this challenge by investigating zoospore survival under various conditions. Our goal was to develop a stable stock of zoospores that is both easily deployable and highly infective. Through direct freezing in liquid nitrogen, we have successfully preserved their virulence. This breakthrough eliminates the need for repeated culture transfers, simplifying the process of plant inoculation. Background: This study was designed to evaluate the care of hypertensive patients in daily clinical practice in public and private centers in all Tunisian regions., Objective: This study will provide us an overview of hypertension (HTN) management in Tunisia and the degree of adherence of practitioners to international recommendations., Methods: This is a national observational cross-sectional multicenter study that will include patients older than 18 years with HTN for a duration of 4 weeks, managed in the public sector from primary and secondary care centers as well as patients managed in the private sector. Every participating patient signed a consent form. The study will exclude patients undergoing dialysis. The parameters that will be evaluated are demographic and anthropometric data, lifestyle habits, blood pressure levels, lipid profiles, treatment, and adherence to treatment. The data are collected via the web interface in the Dacima Clinical Suite., Results: The study began on April 15, 2019 and ended on May 15, 2019. During this period, we included 25,890 patients with HTN. Data collection involved 321 investigators from 24 Tunisian districts. Plant essential oils (EOs) are gaining interest as biopesticides for crop protection. EOs have been recognized as important ingredients of plant protection products including insecticidal, acaricidal, fungicidal, and nematicidal agents. Considering the growing importance of EOs as active ingredients, the domestication and cultivation of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (MAPs) to produce chemically stable EOs contributes to species conservation, provides the sustainability of production, and decreases the variations in the active ingredients. In addition to these direct effects on plant pests and diseases, EOs can induce plant defenses (priming effects) resulting in better protection. This aspect is of relevance considering that the EU framework aims to achieve the sustainable use of new plant protection products (PPPs), and since 2020, the use of contaminant PPPs has been prohibited. In this paper, we review the most updated information on the direct plant protection effects of EOs, focusing on their modes of action against insects, fungi, and nematodes, as well as the information available on EOs with plant defense priming effects.

Background: The additive benefit of inhaled corticosteroid when used with systemic corticosteroid in acute asthma is still unclear. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of high and repeated doses of inhaled budesonide when combined with the standard treatment of adult acute asthma., Methods: It was a prospective double-blind randomized controlled study performed in the emergency department (ED) from May 1, 2010 to February 28, 2011 (ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT04016220). Fifty patients were included and were randomized to receive intravenous hydrocortisone hemisuccinate in association with nebulized budesonide (n = 23, budesonide group) or normal saline (n = 27, control group). Nebulization of budesonide or saline was done in combination with 5 mg of terbutaline every 20 min the first hour, then at 2 h (H2), and 3 h (H3). All patients received standard treatment. Efficacy and safety of inhaled budesonide were evaluated every 30 min for 180 min., Results: A significant increase in peak expiratory flow (PEF) was observed in both treatment groups at evaluation times. The increase in PEF persisted significantly compared to the previous measurement in both groups. There was no significant difference in the PEF between the two groups at evaluation times. There was no significant difference between the two groups in the evolution in the respiratory rate and heart rate. There was also no statistically significant difference between the two groups in the rate of hospitalization, the discharge criteria before the end of the protocol., Conclusions: Considering its limited power, our study suggests that the association of nebulized budesonide with hydrocortisone hemisuccinate has no additional effect over the use of hydrocortisone alone in adults' acute asthma managed in the ED., (© 2022. The use of high-pressure synthesis conditions to produce I-bearing aluminoborosilicate represents a promising issue for the immobilization of 129 I radioisotope. Furthermore, iodine appears to be more solubilized in glasses under its iodate (I 5+ ) form rather than its iodide (I - ) form. Currently, the local atomic environment for iodine is poorly constrained for I - and virtually unknown for I 5+ or I 7+ . We used I K-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy conducted at 20 K for determining the local atomic environment of iodine dissolved as I - , I 5+ , and I 7+ in a series of aluminoborosilicate glasses. We determined that I - is surrounded by either Na + or Ca 2+ in agreement with previous studies. The signal collected from EXAFS reveals that I 5+ is surrounded invariably by three oxygen atoms forming an IO 3 - cluster charge compensated by Na + and/or Ca 2+ . The I-O distance in iodate dissolved in glass is comparable to the I-O distance in crystalline compounds at ∼1.8 Å. The distance to the second nearest neighbor (Na + or Ca 2+ ) is also constant at ∼3.2 Å. This derived distance is identical to the distance between I - and Na + or Ca 2+ in the case of iodide local environment. For one sample containing iodate and periodate, the distinction between the local environment of I 5+ and I 7+ could not be made, suggesting that both environments have comparable EXAFS signals.

Background: Hypertension is the leading cause of morbi-mortality in our country. Thus, we conducted this national survey on hypertension to analyze the profile of the Tunisian hypertensive patient and to assess the level of blood pressure control., Methods: Nature HTN is an observational multicentric survey, including hypertensive individuals and consulting their doctors during the period of the study. Blood pressure measurements were conducted during consultation, using a standardized auscultatory or oscillometric sphygmomanometer after at least 15 min of rest. The diagnosis of new hypertension is based on the 2018 ESC/ESH criteria. The primary endpoint of our study was uncontrolled hypertension defined by a systolic blood pressure ≥ 140 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure ≥ 90 mmHg., Results: Three hundred twenty-one investigators participated in the study. We enrolled 25,890 patients with a female predominance (Sex ratio, 1.21) and an average age of 64.4 ± 12.2 years. Most individuals were treated in the public sector (74%), 39.4% of patients were diabetic, 25.8% were obese, 44.6% were overweight and 14% were smokers. Hypertension was controlled in 51.7% of cases if we consider 140/90 as a BP target, and only in 18.6% if we consider 130/80 as a target. The independent predictors of uncontrolled blood pressure were male sex (OR = 1.09, 95%CI [1.02-1.16]), age > 65 year-old (OR = 1.07, 95% CI[1.01-1.13], diabetes (OR = 1.18, 95% CI [1.11-1.25], Smoking (OR = 1.15, 95% CI [1.05-1.25]), Obesity (OR = 1.14, 95% CI[1.07-1.21]), management in public sector (OR = 1.25, 95% CI [1.16-1.34]), and Heart rate > 80 bpm (OR = 1.59, 95% CI [1.48-1.71]). Contrarily, high educational level (OR = 0.9, 95% CI [0.84-0.97], absence of history of coronary disease (OR = 0.86, 95% CI [0.8-0.93]), salt restriction (OR = 0.48, 95% CI [0.45-0.51]), drug compliance (OR = 0.57, 95% CI[0.52-0.61]), and regular physical activity (OR = 0.77, 95% CI[0.71-0.84]) are strong predictors of blood pressure control., Conclusion: NaTuRe HTN showed that blood pressure control was reached in more than half of the Tunisian people. The control remains low in patients with high cardiovascular profiles and in those treated in the public sector. A national health program based on therapeutic education, regular control and continuous support to the public institutions is needed to decrease the burden of hypertension incidence rate., (© 2022. In this work, we studied the direct and indirect plant protection effects of an Artemisia absinthium essential oil (AEO) on tomato seedlings against Fusarium oxysporum sp. oxysporum radicis lycopersici ( Fol ). AEO exhibited a toxic effect in vitro against Fol . Additionally, tomato seedlings germinated from seeds pretreated with AEO and grown hydroponically were protected against Fol . Plant disease symptoms, including, water and fresh weight loss, tissue necrosis, and chlorosis were less pronounced in AEO-treated seedlings. AEO also contributed to plant defenses by increasing callose deposition and the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) on seed surfaces without affecting seed germination or plant development. The essential oil seed coating also primed a durable tomato seedling defense against the fungus at later stages of plant development. RNA-seq and metabolomic analysis performed on seedlings after 12 days showed that the AEO treatment on seeds induced transcriptomic and metabolic changes. The metabolomic analysis showed an induction of vanillic acid, coumarin, lycopene, oleamide, and an unknown metabolite of m/z 529 in the presence of Fol . The StNRPD2 gene, the second largest component of RNA polymerases IV and V directly involved in de novo cytosine methylation by RNA-directed DNA methylation (RdDM), was highly induced in the presence of AEO. The host methionine cycle (MTC) controlling trans-methylation reactions, was also altered by AEO through the high induction of S-adenosyl methionine transferases (SAMts). Our results suggest that AEO treatment could induce de novo epigenetic changes in tomato, modulating the speed and extent of its immune response to Fol . Seasonal influenza represents a huge health burden, resulting in significant mortality and morbidity. Following the 2009 H1N1 pandemic, focus has been directed on the burden of influenza globally. Country and regional disease burden estimates play important roles in helping inform decisions on national influenza intervention programmes. Despite improvements in influenza surveillance following the 2009 pandemic, many opportunities remain unexplored in the Eastern Mediterranean and North African (EMNA) region, which has a high prevalence of patients with chronic disease and thus a population at high risk of influenza complications. We conducted a systematic literature review of Embase, Medline, Scopus and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews from 1 January 1998 to 31 January 2020 covering the EMNA region with the aim to describe the epidemiology of influenza in the region and assess the influenza epidemiological surveillance research landscape. Relevant data on study characteristics, population, clinical/virology characteristics and epidemiology were extracted and summarised descriptively. Of the 112 studies identified for inclusion, 90 were conducted in the Eastern Mediterranean region, 19 in North Africa and three across the EMNA region. Data were reported on 314,058 laboratory-confirmed influenza cases, 96 of which were derived from surveillance systems. Amongst the surveillance studies, the percentage of positive cases reported ranged from 1% to 100%. The predominantly identified influenza strain was strain A; H1N1 was the most prominent circulating subtype. Typing was performed in approximately 75% and subtyping in 50% of studies, respectively. Data on those considered most at risk for influenza complications were collected in 21% of studies, highlighting a regional gap for these data. Our review reveals existing gaps in regional estimates of influenza health and economic burden, hospitalisation rates and duration, and highlights the need for robust and high-quality epidemiology data to help inform public health interventions., (© 2022. The syntheses and investigations of new biologically active derivatives of dihydropyrimidines by Biginelli reaction in the presence of copper triflate are reported. Due to the fact that salicylaldehyde and its derivatives under Biginelli reaction conditions can lead to the formation of 2 types of dihydropyrimidines, the influence of copper triflate on product formation was also investigated. In addition to this, regioselective oxidation of dihydropyrimidines was performed in the presence of cerium ammonium nitrate and novel oxidized dihydropyrimidines were obtained. Single crystals of some of them were obtained and as a result, the structures of them were investigated by X-ray diffraction method, which allows determining the presence of hydrogen bonds in their structures. In addition to this, the presence of hydrogen bonds in their structures affects the formation of the corresponding tautomer during oxidizing of dihydropyrimidines. The wastewater treatment produces a large amount of sludge. The different uses of eliminations sludge such as landfills or incineration have consequences negative for the environment, the agricultural use has increased worldwide, especially in crops and few or no studies have been conducted with forest plantations in Algeria. The objective of this study is to assess fertilizing characteristics of the sludge from the wastewater treatment plant of Tiaret (Algeria). One-year-old saplings of Eucalyptus camaldulensis were transplanted into pots with sludge/soil mixtures where sludge content was 20%, 40% and 60%. Biometric measurements (height, base diameter, diameter at mid-height and the number of leaves) were performed during six months after planting. Results demonstrated the positive effect of sludge application. A significant difference in height increment and number of leaves was found between the control and sludge-treated plants. Biometric values for all sludge mixtures were higher than those for control plants (100% soil). The mixture, which contained 60% sludge, gives the best result, except for a diameter of stem. Plants grown on sludge/soil mixture had average height 49.4 ± 24.1 cm and average number of leaves 68.8 ± 6.2 while average height for plants grown on soil was 34.3 ± 12.8 cm and average number of leaves was 40 ± 3.8. Sludge application provides soil amendment and additional nutrient supply for planted trees.

Background: The goal of this study was to determine the value of systolic time intervals and their change during Valsalva maneuver (VM) in the diagnosis of left ventricular dysfunction (LVD) in patients with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD)., Methods: We included 166 patients admitted to the emergency department for AECOPD. Measurement of systolic time intervals included electromechanical activation time (EMAT), left ventricular ejection time (LVET), and EMAT/LVET ratio. These were performed at baseline and during the first strain phase of the VM using a computerized phonoelectrocardiographic method. The diagnosis of LVD was determined on the basis of clinical examination, echocardiography, and brain natriuretic peptide. The values of systolic time intervals were compared between patients with and without LVD; their diagnostic performance was assessed using the area under receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve., Results: Patients with LVD (n=95) had a significantly higher EMAT and lower LVET and EMAT/LVET ratio compared to patients without LVD (n=71); the area under ROC curve was 0.79, 0.88, and 0.90, respectively, for EMAT, LVET, and EMAT/LVET ratio. All baseline systolic time intervals changed significantly during VM in patients without LVD but they did not change in patients with LVD. The area under ROC curve increased to 0.84 and 0.93, respectively, for EMAT and EMAT/LVET ratio but did not change for LVET., Conclusion: Simple and noninvasive measurements of systolic time intervals combined with VM could be helpful to detect or rule out LVD in patients admitted to the emergency room for COPD excacerbation. The EMAT/LVET ratio seems to have the best diagnostic value.

Background: Left-ventricular dysfunction associated with COPD exacerbation is frequently underestimated. We tested whether finger plethysmography waveform change during the Valsalva maneuver could aid in the distinction between patients with COPD exacerbation with and without left-ventricular dysfunction., Methods: We included 102 subjects with COPD exacerbation and 51 subjects with acute heart failure admitted to the emergency department for acute dyspnea. Measurements of the plethysmographic pulse amplitude ratio under the Valsalva maneuver were obtained. The value of the plethysmographic pulse amplitude ratio in diagnosing left-ventricular dysfunction in COPD exacerbation subjects was quantified using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curves. Diagnostic performance of the plethysmographic pulse amplitude ratio was compared with the Boston score, and the net reclassification improvement was calculated to determine the incremental value in detecting left-ventricular dysfunction., Results: Values of the plethysmographic pulse amplitude ratio were higher in COPD exacerbation subjects with left-ventricular dysfunction compared with those without left-ventricular dysfunction (0.78 vs. 0.38, P = .01) but not significantly different from those of the acute heart failure group (0.78). There was a significant correlation between plethysmographic pulse amplitude ratio values and brain natriuretic peptide serum levels. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for the plethysmographic pulse amplitude ratio to detect left-ventricular dysfunction among subjects with COPD exacerbation was significantly higher compared with that of the Boston score (0.92 vs. 0.76, P = .02). Exposure to plethysmographic pulse amplitude ratio values increased the overall accuracy from Boston score-based predictions of left-ventricular dysfunction and provided a net reclassification improvement of 17.3%., Conclusions: An increased plethysmographic pulse amplitude ratio associated with COPD exacerbation is a good predictor of left-ventricular dysfunction. This simple and noninvasive index could help emergency department physicians to detect or rule out left-ventricular dysfunction in patients with COPD exacerbation who are able to perform the Valsalva maneuver.
