Recent advancements in ultra-stable ground-based high-resolution spectrographs have propelled ground-based astronomy to the forefront of exoplanet detection and characterisation. Retrieving accurate atmospheric parameters depends on accurate modelling and removal of the telluric contamination while preserving the faint underlying exoplanet signal. There exist many methods to model telluric contamination, whether directly modelling the Earth's transmission spectrum via radiative transfer modelling, or using a principal component analysis (PCA)-like reconstruction to fit the time-invariant features of a spectrum. We aimed to assess the efficacy of these various telluric removal methods in preserving the underlying exoplanetary spectra. We compared two of the most common telluric modelling and removal methods, molecfit and the PCA-like algorithm SysRem, using planetary transmission spectra injected into three high-resolution optical observations taken with ESPRESSO. These planetary signals were injected at orbital periods of P = 2 days and 12 days, resulting in differing changes in radial velocity during transit. We then retrieved various injected atmospheric model parameters in order to determine the efficacy of the telluric removal methods. For the close-in, high velocity injected signal, we found that SysRem performed better for species that are also present in the Earth's atmosphere across each of the datasets. As we moved to slower moving signals at larger orbital separations, for one of the three datasets, SysRem dampened the planetary H$_2$O signal. In contrast, the H$_2$O signal was preserved for the telluric modelling method, molecfit. However, this behaviour was not ubiquitous across all three of the injected datasets, with another dataset showing a more precise H$_2$O/Fe ratio when preprocessed with SysRem., Comment: 25 pages, 23 figures, appendices included. We report the discovery of PSJ2107-1611, a fold-configuration 4.3"-separation quadruply lensed quasar with a bright lensed arc. It was discovered using a convolutional neural network on Pan-STARRS gri images of pre-selected quasar candidates with multiple nearby Pan-STARRS detections. Spectroscopic follow-up with EFOSC2 on the ESO 3.58m New Technology Telescope reveals the source to be a quasar at z = 2.673, with the blended fold image pair showing deformed broad lines relative to the other images. The flux ratios measured from optical to near-infrared imaging in the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey, Pan-STARRS, the Legacy Surveys, and the Vista Hemisphere Survey are inconsistent with a smooth mass model as the fold pair images are about 15 times too faint. Variability, time delay effects, and reddening are ruled out through multiple-epoch imaging and color information. The system is marginally resolved in the radio in the Very Large Array Sky Survey S-band, where it has a 10 mJy detection. The radio flux ratios are compatible with the smooth mass macromodel. This system offers a unique tool for future studies of quasar structure with strong and microlensing. The Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcano erupted on 15 January 2022 with an energy equivalent to around 61 megatons of TNT. The explosion was bigger than any other volcanic eruption so far in the 21st century. Huge quantities of particles, including dust and water vapour, were released into the atmosphere. We present the results of a preliminary study of the effects of the explosion on observations taken at Paranal Observatory using a range of instruments. Since 2005 ESO has been working with its community and industry to develop an extremely large optical/infrared telescope. ESO's Extremely Large Telescope, or ELT for short, is a revolutionary ground-based telescope that will have a 39-metre main mirror and will be the largest visible and infrared light telescope in the world. To address specific topics that are needed for the science operations and calibrations of the telescope, thirteen specific working groups were created to coordinate the effort between ESO, the instrument consortia, and the wider community. We present FORS2 (attached to ESO's Very Large Telescope) observations of the exoplanet WASP-17b during its primary transit, for the purpose of differential spectrophotometry analysis. We use the instrument in its Mask eXchange Unit (MXU) mode to simultaneously obtain low resolution spectra of the planet hosting star, as well as several reference stars in the field of view. The integration of these spectra within broadband and smaller 100$\AA$ bins provides us with 'white' and spectrophotometric light curves, from 5700 to 8000$\AA$. Through modelling the white light curve, we obtain refined bulk and transit parameters of the planet, as well as wavelength-dependent variations of the planetary radius from smaller spectral bins through which the transmission spectrum is obtained. The inference of transit parameters, as well as the noise statistics, is performed using a Gaussian Process model. We achieve a typical precision in the transit depth of a few hundred parts per million from various transit light curves. From the transmission spectra we rule out a flat spectrum at >3$\sigma$ and detect marginal presence of the pressure-broadened sodium wings. Furthermore, we detect the wing of the potassium absorption line in the upper atmosphere of the planet with 3$\sigma$ confidence, both facts pointing to a relatively shallow temperature gradient of the atmosphere. These conclusions are mostly consistent with previous studies of this exo-atmosphere, although previous potassium measurements have been inconclusive., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables. Transmission spectroscopy facilitates the detection of molecules and/or clouds in the atmospheres of exoplanets. Such studies rely heavily on space-based or large ground-based observatories, as one needs to perform time- resolved, high signal-to-noise spectroscopy. The FORS2 instrument at ESO's Very Large Telescope is the obvious choice for performing such studies, and was indeed pioneering the field in 2010. After that, however, it was shown to suffer from systematic errors caused by the Longitudinal Atmospheric Dispersion Corrector (LADC). This was successfully addressed, leading to a renewed interest for this instrument as shown by the number of proposals submitted to perform transmission spectroscopy of exoplanets. We present here the context, the problem and how we solved it, as well as the recent results obtained. We finish by providing tips for an optimum strategy to do transmission spectroscopy with FORS2, in the hope that FORS2 may become the instrument of choice for ground-based transmission spectroscopy of exoplanets., Comment: Paper 9908-85 presented at SPIE 2016

We present a large, comprehensive survey of rovibrational CO line emission at 4.7 micron from 69 protoplanetary disks, obtained with CRIRES on the ESO Very Large Telescope at the highest available spectral resolving power (R=95,000, v=3.2 km/s). The CO fundamental band (Delta v=1) is a well-known tracer of warm gas in the inner, planet-forming regions of gas-rich disks around young stars, with the lines formed in the super-heated surfaces of the disks at radii of 0.1-10 AU. Our high spectral resolution data provide new insight into the kinematics of the inner disk gas. Pure double-peaked Keplerian profiles are surprisingly uncommon, beyond the frequency expected based on disk inclination. The majority of the profiles are consistent with emission from a disk plus a slow (few km/s) molecular disk wind. This is evidenced by analysis of different categories as well as an overall tendency for line profiles to have excess blue emission. Weak emission lines from isotopologues and vibrationally excited levels are readily detected. In general, 13CO lines trace cooler gas than the bulk 12CO emission and may arise from further out in the disk, as indicated by narrower line profiles. A high fraction of the sources show vibrationally excited emission (~50%) which is correlated with accretion luminosity, consistent with ultra-violet (UV) fluorescent excitation. Disks around early-type Herbig AeBe stars have narrower lines, on average, than their lower-mass late-type counterparts, due to their increased luminosity. Evolutionary changes in CO are also seen. Removal of the protostellar envelope between class I and II results in the disappearance of the strong absorption lines and CO ice feature characteristic of class I spectra. However, CO emission from class I and II objects is similar in detection frequency, excitation and line shape, indicating that inner disk characteristics are established early., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

We present a spectro-astrometric survey of molecular gas in the inner regions of 16 protoplanetary disks using CRIRES, the high resolution infrared imaging spectrometer on the Very Large Telescope. Spectro-astrometry with CRIRES measures the spatial extent of line emission to sub-milliarcsecond precision, or <0.2 AU at the distance of the observed targets. The sample consists of gas-rich disks surrounding stars with spectral types ranging from K to A. The properties of the spectro-astrometric signals divide the sources into two distinct phenomenological classes: one that shows clear Keplerian astrometric spectra, and one in which the astrometric signatures are dominated by gas with strong non-Keplerian (radial) motions. Similarly to the near-infrared continuum emission, as determined by interferometry, we find that the size of the CO line emitting region in the Keplerian sources obeys a size-luminosity relation as $R_CO L_*^0.5. The non-Keplerian spectro-astrometric signatures are likely indicative of the presence of wide-angle disk winds. The central feature of the winds is a strong sub-Keplerian velocity field due to conservation of angular momentum as the wind pressure drives the gas outwards. We construct a parametrized 2-dimensional disk+wind model that reproduces the observed characteristics the observed CO spectra and astrometry. The modeled winds indicate mass-loss rates of >10^-10 to 10^-8 Msol/yr. We suggest a unifying model in which all disks have slow molecular winds, but where the magnitude of the mass-loss rate determines the degree to which the mid-infrared molecular lines are dominated by the wind relative to the Keplerian disk surface., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We report evidence for an anti-correlation between spin temperature $T_s$ and metallicity [Z/H], detected at $3.6 \sigma$ significance in a sample of 26 damped Lyman-$\alpha$ absorbers (DLAs) at redshifts $0.09 < z < 3.45$. The anti-correlation is detected at $3 \sigma$ significance in a sub-sample of 20 DLAs with measured covering factors, implying that it does not stem from low covering factors. We obtain $T_s = (-0.68 \pm 0.17) \times {\rm [Z/H]} + (2.13 \pm 0.21)$ from a linear regression analysis. Our results indicate that the high $T_s$ values found in DLAs do not arise from differences between the optical and radio sightlines, but are likely to reflect the underlying gas temperature distribution. The trend between $T_s$ and [Z/H] can be explained by the larger number of radiation pathways for gas cooling in galaxies with high metal abundances, resulting in a high cold gas fraction, and hence, a low spin temperature. Conversely, low-metallicity galaxies have fewer cooling routes, yielding a larger warm gas fraction and a high $T_s$. Most DLAs at $z>1.7$ have low metallicities, [Z/H] $< -1$, implying that the HI in high-$z$ DLAs is predominantly warm. The anti-correlation between $T_s$ and [Z/H] is consistent with the presence of a mass-metallicity relation in DLAs, suggested by the tight correlation between DLA metallicity and the kinematic widths of metal lines. Most high-$z$ DLAs are likely to arise in galaxies with low masses ($M_{\rm vir} < 10^{10.5} M_\odot$), low metallicities ([Z/H]$< -1$, and low cold gas fractions., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures; accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal Letters

We analyse the properties of MgII absorption systems detected along the sightlines toward GRBs using a sample of 10 GRB afterglow spectra obtained with VLT-UVES over the past six years. The S/N ratio is sufficiently high that we can extend previous studies to smaller equivalent widths (typically Wr>0.3A). Over a pathlength of Delta(z)~14 the number of weak absorbers detected is similar along GRB and QSO lines of sight, while the number of strong systems is larger along GRB lines of sight with a 2-sigma significance. Using intermediate and low resolution observations reported in the literature, we increase the absorption length for strong systems to Delta(z)=31.5 (about twice the path length of previous studies) and find that the number density of strong MgII systems is a factor of 2.1+/-0.6 higher (about 3-sigma significance) toward GRBs as compared to QSOs, about twice smaller however than previously reported. We divide the sample in three redshift bins and we find that the number density of strong MgII is larger in the low redshift bins. We investigate in detail the properties of strong MgII systems observed with UVES. Both the estimated dust extinction in strong GRB MgII systems and the equivalent width distribution are consistent with what is observed for standard QSO systems. We find also that the number density of (sub)-DLAs per unit redshift in the UVES sample is probably twice larger than what is expected from QSO sightlines which confirms the peculiarity of GRB lines of sight. These results indicate that neither a dust extinction bias nor different beam sizes of the sources are viable explanations for the excess. It is still possible that the current sample of GRB lines of sight is biased by a subtle gravitational lensing effect. More data and larger samples are needed to test this hypothesis. The formation and evolution of the Milky Way bulge is not yet well understood and its classification is ambiguous. Constraints can, however, be obtained by studying the abundances of key elements in bulge stars. The aim of this study is to determine the chemical evolution of CNO, and a few other elements in stars in the Galactic bulge, and to discuss the sensitivities of the derived abundances from molecular lines. High-resolution, near-IR spectra in the H band were recorded using VLT/CRIRES. Due to the high and variable visual extinction in the line-of-sight towards the bulge, an analysis in the near-IR is preferred. The CNO abundances can all be determined simultaneously from the numerous molecular lines in the wavelength range observed. The three giant stars in Baade's window presented here are the first bulge stars observed with CRIRES. We have especially determined the CNO abundances, with uncertainties of less than 0.20 dex, from CO, CN, and OH lines. Since the systematic uncertainties in the derived CNO abundances due to uncertainties in the stellar fundamental parameters, notably Teff, are significant, a detailed discussion of the sensitivities of the derived abundances is included. We find good agreement between near-IR and optically determined O, Ti, Fe, and Si abundances. Two of our stars show a solar [C+N/Fe], suggesting that these giants have experienced the first dredge-up and that the oxygen abundance should reflect the original abundance of the giants. The two giants fit into the picture, in which there is no significant difference between the O abundance in bulge and thick-disk stars. Our determination of the S abundances is the first for bulge stars. The high [S/Fe] values for all the stars indicate a high star-formation rate in an early phase of the bulge evolution., Comment: Accepted by A&A

Aims. High angular resolution N-band imaging is used to discern the torus of active galactic nuclei (AGN) from its environment in order to allow a comparison of its mid-infrared properties to the expectations of the unified scenario for AGN. Methods. We present VLT-VISIR images of 25 low-redshift AGN of different Seyfert types, as well as N-band SEDs of 20 of them. In addition, we compare our results for 19 of them to Spitzer IRS spectra. Results. We find that at a resolution of ~ 0.35", all the nuclei of our observed sources are point-like, except for 2 objects whose extension is likely of instrumental origin. For 3 objects, however, we observed additional extended circumnuclear emission, even though our observational strategy was not designed to detect it. Comparison of the VISIR photometry and Spitzer spectrophotometry indicates that the latter is affected by extended emission in at least 7 out of 19 objects and the level of contamination is (0.20 ~ 0.85) * F_IRS. In particular, the 10 um silicate emission feature seen in the Spitzer spectra of 6 type I AGN, possibly 1 type II AGN and 2 LINERs, also probably originates not solely in the torus but also in extended regions. Conclusions. Our results generally agree with the expectations from the unified scenario, while the relative weakness of the silicate feature supports clumpy torus models. (Abridged) We use VLT/UVES high-resolution optical spectroscopy of seven GRB afterglows at z_GRB>2 to investigate circumburst and interstellar plasma in the host galaxies. Our sample consists of GRBs 021004, 050730, 050820, 050922C, 060607, 071031, and 080310. Four of these spectra were taken in rapid-response mode, within 30 minutes of the Swift GRB detection. We identify several distinct categories of high-ion absorption at velocities close to z_GRB: (i) Strong high-ion components at z_GRB itself are always seen in OVI, CIV, and SiIV, and usually (in 6 of 7 cases) in NV. We discuss circumburst and interstellar models for the origin of this absorption. Using the non-detection of SIV* toward GRB 050730 together with a UV photo-excitation model, we place a lower limit of 400 pc on the distance of the SIV-bearing gas from the GRB. (ii) Complex, multi-component CIV and SiIV profiles extending over 100-400 km/s around z_GRB are observed in each spectrum; these velocity fields are similar to those measured in damped Lyman-alpha systems at similar redshifts, suggesting a galactic origin. (iii) Asymmetric, blueshifted, absorption-line wings covering 65-140 km/s are seen in the CIV, SiIV, and OVI profiles in 4 of the 7 spectra. The wing kinematics together with the observation that two wings show "Galactic" CIV/SiIV ratios suggest these features trace outflowing ISM gas in the GRB host galaxies. (iv) High-velocity (HV; 500-5000 km/s) components are detected in 6 of the 7 spectra. The HV components show diverse properties. We present velocity-resolved spectro-astrometric imaging of the 4.7 $\mu$m rovibrational lines of CO gas in protoplanetary disks using the CRIRES high resolution infrared spectrometer on the Very Large Telescope (VLT). The method as applied to three disks with known dust gaps or inner holes out to 4-45 AU (SR 21, HD 135344B and TW Hya) achieves an unprecedented spatial resolution of $0.1-0.5$ AU. While one possible gap formation mechanism is dynamical clearing by giant planets, other equally good explanations (stellar companions, grain growth, photo-evaporation) exist. One way of distinguishing between different scenarios is the presence and distribution of gas inside the dust gaps. Keplerian disk models are fit to the spectro-astrometric position-velocity curves to derive geometrical parameters of the molecular gas. We determine the position angles and inclinations of the inner disks with accuracies as good as 1-2\degr, as well as the radial extent of the gas emission. Molecular gas is detected well inside the dust gaps in all three disks. The gas emission extends to within a radius of 0.5 AU for HD 135344B and to 0.1 AU for TW Hya, supporting partial clearing by a $< 1-10 M_{\rm Jup}$ planetary body as the cause of the observed dust gaps, or removal of the dust by extensive grain coagulation and planetesimal formation. The molecular gas emission in SR 21 appears to be truncated within $\sim 7 $AU, which may be caused by complete dynamical clearing by a more massive companion. We find a smaller inclination angle of the inner disk of TW Hya than that determined for the outer disk, suggestive of a disk warp. We present measurements of the fluorine abundance in a Galactic Bulge Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) star. The measurements were performed using high resolution K-band spectra obtained with the CRIRES spectrograph, which has been recently installed at ESO's VLT, together with state-of-the-art model atmospheres and synthetic spectra. This represents the first fluorine abundance measurement in a Galactic Bulge star, and one of few measurements of this kind in a third dredge-up oxygen-rich AGB star. The F abundance is found to be close to the solar value scaled down to the metallicity of the star, and in agreement with Disk giants that are comparable to the Bulge giant studied here. The measurement is of astrophysical interest also because the star's mass can be estimated rather accurately ($1.4 \lesssim M/\mathrm{M}_{\sun} \lesssim 2.0$). AGB nucleosynthesis models predict only a very mild enrichment of F in such low mass AGB stars. Thus, we suggest that the fluorine abundance found in the studied star is representative for the star's natal cloud, and that fluorine must have been produced at a similar level in the Bulge and in the Disk., Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure, accepted for publication by ApJ

Context: We investigate mid-infrared and X-ray properties of the dusty torus invoked in the unification scenario for active galactic nuclei. Aims: We use the relation between mid IR and hard X-ray luminosities to constrain the geometry and physical state of the dusty torus. Methods: We present new VISIR observations of 17 nearby AGN and combine these with our earlier VISIR sample of 8 Seyfert galaxies. Combining these observations with X-ray data from the literature we study the correlation between their mid IR and hard X-ray luminosities. Results: A statistically highly significant correlation between the rest frame 12.3 mircon (L_MIR) and 2-10 keV (L_X) luminosities is found. Furthermore, with a probability of 97%, we find that Sy 1 and Sy 2 have the same distribution of L_MIR over L_X. Conclusions: The high resolution of our MIR imaging allows us to exclude any significant non-torus contribution to the AGN mid IR continuum,thereby implying that the similarity in the L_MIR / L_X ratio between Sy 1s and Sy 2s is intrinsic to AGN. We argue that this is best explained by clumpy torus models. The slope of the correlation is in good agreement with the expectations from the unified scenario and indicates little to no change of the torus geometry with luminosity. Half of the Seyfert-2 galaxies escaped detection of broad lines in their polarised spectra observed so far. Some authors have suspected that these non-HBLRs contain real Sy2 nuclei without intrinsic broad line region hidden behind a dust torus. If this were true, then their nuclear structure would fundamentally differ from that of Sy2s with polarised broad lines: in particular, they would not be explained by orientation-based AGN unification. Further arguments for two physically different Sy2 populations have been derived from the warm and cool IRAS F25/F60 ratios. These ratios, however, refer to the entire host galaxies and are unsuitable to conclusively establish the absence of a nuclear dust torus. Instead, a study of the Seyfert-2 dichotomy should be performed on the basis of nuclear properties only. Here we present the first comparison between [OIII] 5007A and mid-infrared imaging at matching spatial resolution. Exploring the Seyfert-2 dichotomy we find that the distributions of nuclear mid-infrared/[OIII] luminosity ratios are indistinguishable for Sy1s and Sy2s with and without detected polarised broad lines and irrespective of having warm or cool IRAS F25/F60 ratios. We find no evidence for the existence of a population of real Sy2s with a deficit of nuclear dust emission. Our results suggest 1) that all Seyfert nuclei possess the same physical structure including the putative dust torus and 2) that the cool IRAS colours are caused by a low contrast of AGN to host galaxy. Then the Seyfert-2 dichotomy is explained in part by unification of non-HBLRs with narrow-line Sy1s and to a larger rate by observational biases caused by a low AGN/host contrast and/or an unfavourable scattering geometry., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, accepted by A&A

We show individual high resolution spectra of components A, B, and C of the nearby late-M type multiple system LHS 1070. Component A is a mid-M star, B and C are known to have masses at the threshold to brown dwarfs. From our spectra we measure rotation velocities and the mean magnetic field for all three components individually. We find magnetic flux on the order of several kilo-Gauss in all components. The rotation velocities of the two late-M objects B and C are similar (vsini = 16km/s), the earlier A component is spinning only at about half that rate. This suggests weakening of net rotational braking at late-M spectral type, and that the lack of slowly rotating late-M and L dwarfs is real. Furthermore, we found that magnetic flux in the B component is about twice as strong as in component C at similar rotation rate. This indicates that rotational braking is not proportional to magnetic field strength in fully convective objects, and that a different field topology is the reason for the weak braking in low mass objects., Comment: accepted for publication as A&A Letter

Context: We investigate mid-infrared and X-ray properties of the dusty torus in unification scenarios for active galactic nuclei. Aims: We use the relation between mid IR and hard X-ray luminosities to constrain AGN unification scenarios. Methods: With VISIR at the VLT, we have obtained the currently highest angular resolution (0".35 FWHM) narrow-band mid infrared images of the nuclei of 8 nearby Seyfert galaxies. Combining these observations with X-ray data from the literature we study the correlation between their mid IR and hard X-ray luminosities. Results: We find that the rest frame 12.3 mircon (L_MIR) and 2-10 keV (L_X) luminosities are correlated at a highly significant level. The best fit power-law to our data is log L_MIR \propto (1.60 \pm 0.22) log L_X, showing a much smaller dispersion than earlier studies. Conclusions: The similarity in the og L_MIR / log L_X ratio between Sy1s and Sy2s even using high angular resolution MIR data implies that the similarity is intrinsic to AGN and not caused by contamination from extra-nuclear emission. We present near-infrared (nIR) and optical observations of the afterglow of GRB 030115. Discovered in an infrared search at Kitt Peak 5 hours after the burst trigger, this afterglow is amongst the faintest observed in the R-band at an early epoch, and exhibits very red colors, with $R-K\approx 6$. The magnitude of the optical afterglow of GRB 030115 is fainter than many upper limits for other bursts, suggesting that without early nIR observations it would have been classified as a ``dark'' burst. Both the color and optical magnitude of the afterglow are likely due to dust extinction and indicate that at least some optical afterglows are very faint due to dust along the line of sight. Multicolor {\it Hubble Space Telescope} observations were also taken of the host galaxy and the surrounding field. Photometric redshifts imply that the host, and a substantial number of faint galaxies in the field are at $z \sim 2.5$. The overdensity of galaxies is sufficiently great that GRB 030115 may have occurred in a rich high-redshift cluster. The host galaxy shows extremely red colors (R-K=5) and is the first GRB host to be classified as an Extremely Red Object (ERO). Some of the galaxies surrounding the host also show very red colors, while the majority of the cluster are much bluer, indicating ongoing unobscured star formation. As it is thought that much of high redshift star formation occurs in highly obscured environments it may be that GRB 030115 represent a transition object, between the relatively unobscured afterglows seen to date and a population which are very heavily extinguished, even in the nIR., Comment: 19 Pages. We present an analysis of three strong, intervening Mg II absorption systems (z_abs = 0.603, 0.656, 1.107) towards the optical afterglow of gamma-ray burst (GRB) 060418. From high resolution UVES spectra we measure metal column densities and find that the highest redshift absorber exhibits a large amount of dust depletion compared with DLAs seen in QSO spectra. The intervening z_abs = 1.107 absorber is also unusual in exhibiting a clear 2175 A bump, the first time this feature has been definitively detected in a GRB spectrum. The GRB afterglow spectrum is best fit with a two component extinction curve: an SMC extinction law at z=1.49 (the redshift of the host) with E(B-V) = 0.07+-0.01 and a Galactic extinction curve at z ~ 1.1 with E(B-V) = 0.08+-0.01. We also present a moderately deep NTT R-band image of the GRB060418 field and spectroscopy of four galaxies within 1 arcminute. None of these objects has a redshift that matches any of the intervening absorbers, and we conclude that the galaxies responsible for the two intervening Mg II absorbers at z ~ 0.6 have luminosities ~<0.3 L^star., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS (Letters), 5 pages. We study the kinematics of the gaseous cosmic web at high redshift with Lyman alpha forest absorption in multiple QSO sightlines. Using a simple analytic model and a cosmological hydrodynamic simulation we constrain the underlying three-dimensional distribution of velocities from the observed line-of-sight distribution of velocity shear across the plane of the sky. The distribution is found to be in good agreement with the intergalactic medium (IGM) undergoing large scale motions dominated by the Hubble flow. Modeling the Lyman alpha clouds analytically and with a hydrodynamics simulation, the average expansion velocity of the gaseous structures causing the Lyman alpha forest in the lower redshift (z = 2) sample appears about 20 percent lower than the local Hubble expansion velocity. We interpret this as tentative evidence for some clouds undergoing gravitational collapse. However, the distribution of velocities is highly skewed, and the majority of clouds at redshifts from 2 to 3.8 expand typically about 5 - 20 percent faster than the Hubble flow. This behavior is explained if most absorbers in the column density range typically detectable are expanding filaments that stretch and drain into more massive nodes. We find no evidence for the observed distribution of velocity shear being significantly influenced by processes other than Hubble expansion and gravitational instability, like galactic winds. To avoid overly disturbing the IGM, winds may be old and/or limp by the time we observe them in the Lyman alpha forest, or they may occupy only an insignificant volume fraction of the IGM. We present an HST STIS spectrum of the HeII Gunn-Peterson effect towards HE2347-4342. Compared to the previous HST GHRS data obtained by Reimers et al. (1997), the STIS spectrum has a much improved resolution. The 2-D detector also allows us to better characterize the sky and dark background. We confirm the presence of two spectral ranges of much reduced opacity, the opacity gaps, and provide improved lower limits on the HeII G-P opacity in the high opacity regions. We use the STIS spectrum together with a Keck--HIRES spectrum covering the corresponding HI Lya forest to calculate a 1-D map of the softness S of the ionization radiation along the line of sight towards HE 2347-4342, where S is the ratio of the HI to HeII photoionization rates. We find that S is generally large but presents important variations, from S ~ 30 in the opacity gaps to a 1 sigma lower limit of 2300 at z~2.86, in a region which shows an extremely low HI opacity over a 6.5 A range. We note that a large S naturally accounts for most of the large SiIV to CIV ratios seen in other quasar absorption line spectra. We present a simple model that reproduces the shape of the opacity gaps in absence of large individual absorption lines. We extend the model described in Heap et al. (2000) to account for the presence of sources close to the line of sight of the background quasar. As an alternative to the delayed reionization model suggested by Reimers et al. (1997), we propose that the large softness observed at z~2.86 is due to the presence of bright soft sources close to the line of sight, i.e. for which the ratio between the number of HI to HeII ionizing photons reaching the IGM is large. Le Brun et al. (1997) presented the first identifications of the galaxies giving rise to 7 intermediate redshift damped Ly-alpha (DLA) absorption systems. Here, we study the gravitational lensing properties of these foreground galaxies based on their observed optical appearance and on the absence of any secondary lensed quasar image. We consider the possibility that any secondary image be hidden due to extinction by dust, but find it unlikely. We derive upper limits on the amplification factor affecting the luminosity of the background quasars; in each case, this factor is found to be less than 0.3 mag. We also obtain upper limits on the total mass of the damped Ly-alpha galaxies, within radii equal to the quasar impact parameters. Mass-to-light ratios are found to be consistent with existing estimates based on X-ray emission or on motion of dwarf satellites. Although we show that lensing is not important in this sample, we note that existing DLA surveys used to determine the cosmological density of gas at z<1 are based on samples of quasars brighter than the ones considered here and for which the amplification bias is likely to be stronger., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A Main Journal. 7 pages, 2 images

We present candidate quasars from a multi-color (uBVRI + narrow-band) imaging survey of 1/2 square degree around the Hubble Deep Field - South. We identify 154 candidate quasars with B < 23 using color selection, consistent with previously measured QSO number counts if we assume a 60% selection efficiency. The narrow-band filter (NB) was centered at 3958 A to detect Ly-alpha at the redshift of J2233-6033, the HDF-S QSO. We confirm the presence of Ly-alpha nebulosity extending ~12'' around the HDF-S QSO, reported by Bergeron et al. (1999). We detect 10 point-like objects in emission through the NB filter. Of these, 7 satisfy our QSO color selection criteria. One of emission-line objects is a B~20 radio-quiet quasar at z=1.56, 6.7' from the line of sight to the HDF-S QSO and ~12'' from the western edge of the WFPC2 deep field., Comment: 13 pages and 6 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We report on HST and Palomar optical images of the field of GRB 990123, obtained on 8 and 9 February 1999. We find that the optical transient (OT) associated with GRB 990123 is located on an irregular galaxy, with magnitude V=24.20 +/- 0.15. The strong metal absorption lines seen in the spectrum of the OT, along with the low probability of a chance superposition, lead us to conclude that this galaxy is the host of the GRB. The OT is projected within the ~1'' visible stellar field of the host, nearer the edge than the center. We cannot, on this basis, rule out the galactic nucleus as the site of the GRB, since the unusual morphology of the host may be the result of an ongoing galactic merger, but our demonstration that this host galaxy has extremely blue optical to infrared colors more strongly supports an association between GRBs and star formation. We find that the OT magnitude on 1999 Feb 9.05, V = 25.45 +/- 0.15, is about 1.5 mag fainter than expected from extrapolation of the decay rate found in earlier observations. A detailed analysis of the OT light curve suggests that its fading has gone through three distinct phases: an early rapid decline (f_{nu} \propto t^{-1.6} for t < 0.1 days), a slower intermediate decline power-law decay (f_{nu} \propto t^{-1.1} for 0.1 < t < 2 days), and then a more rapid decay (at least as steep as (f_{\nu} \propto t^{-1.8} for t > 2 days). The break to steeper slope at late times may provide evidence that the optical emission from this GRB was highly beamed., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal (Letters). Using new HST/FOS, NTT/EMMI, and Keck/HIRES spectra of the gravitationally-lensed double QSO HE 1104-1805 AB (z=2.31, \theta=3.2), and assuming UV photoionization by a metagalactic radiation field, we derive physical conditions (ionization levels, metal abundances and cloud sizes along the lines of sight) in five CIV+MgII absorption systems clustered around z=1.66 along the two lines of sight. Three of these systems are associated with a damped Ly-alpha (DLA) system with logN(HI)=20.85, which is observed in A. The other two systems are associated with a Lyman-limit system with logN(HI)=17.57 (B). The CIV and MgII line profiles in A resemble those in the B spectra, and span \Delta v=360 km/s. Assuming that the relative metal abundances in these absorption systems are the same as observed in the DLA system, we find that the observed N(CIV)/N(MgII) ratios imply ionization parameters of log\Gamma=-2.95 to -2.35. Consequently, these clouds should be small (0.5-1.6 kpc with a hydrogen density n_H<=0.01 cm-3) and relatively highly ionized. The absorption systems to B are found to have a metallicity 0.63 times lower than the metallicity of the gas giving rise to the DLA system, Z(DLA)= 0.1*Z(solar). We detect OVI at z=1.66253 in both QSO spectra, but no associated NV. Our model calculations lead us to conclude that the CIV clouds should be surrounded by large (>= 100 kpc) highly ionized low-density clouds (n_H\sim e-4 cm-3), in which OVI, but only weak CIV absorption occurs. In this state, log\Gamma>=-1.2 reproduces the observed ratio of N(OVI)/N(NV)>60. The spatial distribution of the Ly$\alpha$ forest is studied using new HST data for the quasar pair Q~1026--0045 A and B at $z_{em}$ = 1.438 and 1.520 respectively. The angular separation is 36 arcsec and corresponds to transverse linear separations between lines of sight of $\sim300h^{-1}_{50}$ kpc ($q_{o}$ = 0.5) over the redshift range 0.833 < z < 1.438. From the observed numbers of coincident and anti-coincident Ly$\alpha$ absorption lines, we conclude that, at this redshift, the Ly$\alpha$ structures have typical dimensions of $\sim500h^{-1}_{50}$ kpc, larger than the mean separation of the two lines of sight. The velocity difference, $\Delta V$, between coincident lines is surprisingly small (4 and 8 pairs with $\Delta V < 50 and 200 km/s respectively). Metal line systems are present at $z_{abs}$ = 1.2651 and 1.2969 in A, $z_{abs}$ = 0.6320, 0.7090, 1.2651 and 1.4844 in B. In addition we tentatively identify a weak Mg II system at $z_{abs}$ = 0.11 in B. It is remarkable that the $z_{abs}$ = 1.2651 system is common to both lines of sight. The system at $z_{abs}$ = 1.4844 %is probably associated and has strong O~VI absorption. There is a metal-poor associated system at $z_{abs}$ = 1.4420 along the line of sight to A with complex velocity profile. We detect a strong Ly$\alpha$ absorption along the line of sight to B redshifted by only 300 km/s relatively to the associated system. It is tempting to interpret this as the presence of a disk of radius larger than 300$h^{-1}_{50}$ kpc surrounding quasar A., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, A&A Letter acccepted

We report on the detection of a z_gal=0.101 galaxy projected on the sky at 4.2 arcsec (or 5.2 h^{-1} kpc for q_o=0.5) from the quasar Q 0439-433 (z_em=0.594). The HST spectrum of the quasar shows strong MgII, FeII, SiII, AlII and CIV absorption lines at the same redshift as the galaxy. The equivalent width ratios of the low ionization lines indicate that this system is probably damped with a neutral hydrogen column density of N_HI~10^{20}cm^{-2}. The CIV doublet presents a complex structure, and in particular a satellite with a velocity v=1100km/s relative to the galaxy. The recent observations of high-velocity maser emissions in NGC 4258 by Myoshi et al provide strong evidence for a central object of mass 3.6 10**7 solar masses in the nucleus of this galaxy based on a kinematic argument. However, they should allow an independent determination of the central object mass via gravitational redshift.
