28. Individual Participant Data Meta-Analysis of the Impact of EEF Trials on the Educational Attainment of Pupils on Free School Meals: 2011-2019

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of Education Endowment Foundation (EEF)-funded trials on pupils eligible for free school meals. Although similar analysis is conducted during each individual evaluation, this report conducts a meta-analysis using data from 88 trials and over half a million pupils to reach conclusions. The report contributes to the evidence about what type of approaches may be effective at reducing the attainment gap, which influences the choice of interventions that EEF chooses to trial and scale up. This study investigates the immediate impact of EEF-funded interventions on attainment in literacy and mathematics based on the following research questions: (1) Do EEF trials improve literacy/mathematics attainment of pupils eligible for FSM? (2) What broad types of interventions are more beneficial for mathematics and literacy outcomes of FSM pupils? and (3) Do FSM pupils improve their literacy/mathematics attainment more or less from EEF-funded interventions compared to their non-FSM peers? Abstract

In this new digital era, social media has created a severe impact on the lives of people. In recent times, fake news content on social media has become one of the major challenging problems for society. The dissemination of fabricated and false news articles includes multimodal data in the form of text and images. The previous methods have mainly focused on unimodal analysis. Moreover, for multimodal analysis, researchers fail to keep the unique characteristics corresponding to each modality. This paper aims to overcome these limitations by proposing an Efficient Transformer based Multilevel Attention (ETMA) framework for multimodal fake news detection, which comprises the following components: visual attention-based encoder, textual attention-based encoder, and joint attention-based learning. Each component utilizes the different forms of attention mechanism and uniquely deals with multimodal data to detect fraudulent content. The efficacy of the proposed network is validated by conducting several experiments on four real-world fake news datasets: Twitter, Jruvika Fake News Dataset, Pontes Fake News Dataset, and Risdal Fake News Dataset using multiple evaluation metrics. The results show that the proposed method outperforms the baseline methods on all four datasets. 33. Piecewise Pad\'e-Chebyshev Reconstruction of Bivariate Piecewise Smooth Functions

Abstract

We extend the idea of approximating piecewise smooth univariate functions using rational approximation introduced in \cite{aka_bas-19a} to two-dimensional space. This article aims to implement the novel piecewise Maehly based Pad\'e-Chebyshev approximation \cite{mae_60a}. We first develop a method referred to as PiPC to approximate univariate piecewise smooth functions and then extend the same to a two-dimensional space, leading to a bivariate piecewise Pad\'e-Chebyshev approximation (Pi2DPC) for approximating piecewise smooth functions in two-dimension. We study the utility of the proposed techniques in minimizing the Gibbs phenomenon while approximating piecewise smooth functions. The chief advantage of these methods lies in their non-dependence on any apriori knowledge of the locations and types of singularities (if any) present in the original function. Finally, we supplement our methods with numerical results to validate their effectiveness in diminishing the Gibbs phenomenon to negligible levels., Comment: 26 pages, 15 figures

47. Multisite Educational Trials: Estimating the Effect Size and Its Confidence Intervals

Abstract

In education, multisite trials involve randomization of pupils into intervention and comparison groups within schools. Most analytical models in multisite educational trials ignore that the impact of an intervention may be school dependent. This study investigates the impact of statistical models on the uncertainty associated with an effect size using comparable outcomes and covariates from ten multisite educational trials funded by the UK's Education Endowment Foundation. Ordinary least squares (OLS) models often assume that the pupil's outcomes within schools are independent, which is not always true. Multilevel models address this limitation by incorporating heterogeneity between schools to account for intra-school dependency. This inflates the confidence interval of an effect size obtained from the multilevel models than from an OLS model. For a multisite trial, the heterogeneity between schools also includes the differences in the expected impact of intervention between schools. Ignoring this additional school-by-intervention variation in a multisite trial could affect both its interpretation and conclusions. A robust approach to estimate the confidence intervals for effect size from multisite trials is by treating effect size as a parameter with its distribution. This paper is important for evaluating evidence from multisite trials by accounting for all sources of variability.

Abstract

Educational stakeholders are keen to know the magnitude and importance of different interventions. However, the way evidence is communicated to support understanding of the effectiveness of an intervention is controversial. Typically studies in education have used the standardised mean difference as a measure of the impact of interventions. This measure, commonly known as the effect size, is problematic, in terms of how it is interpreted and understood. In this study, we propose a "gain index" as an alternative metric for quantifying and communicating the effectiveness of an intervention. This is estimated as the difference in the percentage of children who make positive gains between the intervention and control groups. Analysis of four randomized controlled trials in education supports the expectation that most children make progress due to normal school activities, which is independent of the intervention. This study elaborates a method to illustrate how trials with a positive gain index and with a higher percentage of pupils with positive gain in the intervention group can be used to communicate which trials are effective in improving educational outcomes.
