Abstract

A proper version of the proto renormalization-group scheme is presented to derive amplitude equations in striped pattern formation with conserved and nonconserved order parameter. In the conserved case, the result preserves the conservation law as well as the rotational invariance of the physical system. This makes a great contrast with existing singular perturbation theories such as the multiple-scales method, in which the perturbation expansion truncated at any finite order destroys those symmetries., Comment: 8 pages, Prog. 2. Strategy for detecting off-target sites in genome-edited rice

Abstract

Genome-editing using the CRISPR-Cas9 system can substantially accelerate crop breeding. Because off-target editing is the main problem with this system, a reliable method for comprehensively detecting off-target sites is required for the editing of food crop genomes. However, a method that accurately predicts off-target sites has not been established. In this study, we performed a SITE-Seq analysis to predict potential off-target sites. SITE-Seq is an unbiased method applicable for the in vitro detection of double-strand breaks (DSBs). To analyze SITE-Seq data, we developed a novel Galaxy system, which can perform simple and reproducible analyses without a command line operation. We conducted a SITE-Seq analysis of a rice genome modified by OsFH15 gRNA-Cas9, and identified 41 DSB sites in the annotated regions. Amplicon-sequencing revealed mutations at one off-target site in the genome-edited rice. The presence of an uncommon protospacer adjacent motif (NTG PAM) likely makes this off-target site difficult to identify using in silico methods. Of the six tested programs, only CRISPRdirect predicted this off-target site, but it also predicted 6,080 off-target sites in total. These results suggest the SITE-Seq method presented herein can efficiently predict off-target sites and is useful for assessing the safety of genome-edited food.

Abstract

We consider the simplest model that allows the investigation of the role of conservation law and its interplay with a striped-pattern dynamics in determining the overall behavior of the system. We observed in numerical simulations that the interaction of striped-pattern forming instability and a neutrally stable zero mode induces patterns of domains of upflow hexagons coexisting with domains of downflow hexagons. 43. Dynamics of Probe Particles in Polymer Solutions and Gels

Abstract

The dynamics of polystyrene probe particles in poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) solutions and in gels has been investigated by dynamic light scattering. Two modes, i.e., the translational diffusion of probe particles and the cooperative diffusion of polymer chains, were successfully decomposed from CONTIN analysis. The characteristic decay time of probe particles in polymer solutions became larger by a few orders of magnitude than in water. On the other hand, in the case of polymer gels, the translational diffusion of probe particles was substantially frozen, and only the cooperative diffusion of polymer networks was observed. This probe scattering method clearly demonstrates the difference in the dynamics of polymer solutions and gels. The nonergodic nature of polymer networks is also discussed with the characteristic decay time distribution function.

Abstract

It is found that surface electrons show peculiar magnetic properties under a very strong magnetic field and at very low temperatures. When plotted against a dimensionless ratio, the peak values of the ideal susceptibility increase as even integral multiples of the unit value which occurs when the ratio is odd. Such a variation should make an accurate determination of the Bohr magneton possible, but temperature and Coulomb effects supress the peak values. For very small gamma o electron correlations are expected to cause an inversion of the oscillations at the point where the ground state energy in the absence of magnetic field vanishes.

Abstract

Coulomb effects on cyclotron resonance in two-dimensional electron systems are investigated based on a self-consistent approach which improves the random-phase approximation. The memory function in the dynamic magnetoconductivity depends on the electron density not only through the filling factor v but also on its combination with the dimensionless density parameter r sub s in the form r sub s v to the 3/2 power. The memory function reproduces the data of Wilson, Allen and Tsui for intermediate densities.

Important Coulomb effects on the dHvA oscillations in 2D electron systems invite experimental investigation. The magnetothermal oscillations in these systems, which take place under adiabatic conditions, are unusually large and sensitive to the density of states. The period of these oscillations can be used for the determination of the effective Bohr magneton.

By considering electron-electron and electron-impurity scattering, a new exact formula for the memory function of AC conductivity based upon a projection operator formalism is obtained for two-dimensional electron systems in a magnetic field.
