Abstract

A Chinese financial company, through the introduction of action learning methodology, identified core problems from strategy, and finally solved the core strategic problems by forming action learning teams of middle and senior managers, and in the process improved the mindset and capabilities of middle and senior managers. This account of Practice is a reflection from the lead facilitator as he reflects on his own action learning facilitation skills through a review and introduction of this programme design and team-led process, including how to design action learning that integrates offline and online. The content can be used as a reference for other facilitators who are interested in action learning.

31. Ecological restoration of tidal flat and its effects on soil characteristic and bacterial community.

Abstract

Vegetation restoration is a vital ecological remediation technology for greening saline‐alkaline soils. However, little attention is paid to the seasonal changes of soil remediation under different vegetation coverage. This study investigated a recently restored coastal tidal flat located on the island of Zhoushan, by examining shifts in physicochemical properties, enzyme activities, and bacterial communities over 1 year. Soils under Suaeda australis (SUA), Phragmites australis (PHR), Tamarix chinensis (TAM), and two hybrid treatments (SUA+PHR and SUA+TAM) were collected seasonally. Results showed that the seasonal climate variations and vegetation types played important roles in soil physicochemical properties and soil enzyme activities during vegetation restoration. Vegetation could stimulate the activities of soil microbial enzymes, of which PHR‐covered soils exhibited higher catalase activities, higher alkaline phosphomonoesterase activities were observed in summer except for PHR. The combined communities had the highest urease activities in spring and summer, and the highest levels of polyphenol oxidase activity were found in summer or autumn. Furthermore, the bacterial alpha diversity revealed that SUA‐ and SUA+PHR‐covered soils were not markedly affected as the season progressed, whereas PHR and SUA+TAM were characterized by an increase–decrease trend, as well as TAM exhibited highest in autumn. Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Chloroflexi were the dominant phyla in each vegetation types. 48. Cr(VI) Reduction and Fe(II) Regeneration by Penicillium oxalicumSL2-Enhanced Nanoscale Zero-Valent Iron

Abstract

Nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) faces significant challenges in Cr(VI) remediation through aggregation and passivation. This study identified a Cr(VI)-resistant filamentous fungus (Penicillium oxalicumSL2) for nZVI activation and elucidated the synergistic mechanism in chromium remediation. P. oxalicumSL2 and nZVI synergistically and effectively removed Cr(VI), mainly by extracellular nonenzymatic reduction (89.1%). P. oxalicumSL2 exhibited marked iron precipitate solubilization and Fe(II) regeneration capabilities. The existence of the Fe(II)–Cr(V)-oxalate complex (HCrFeC4O9) indicated that in addition to directly reducing Cr(VI), iron ions generated by nZVI stimulated Cr(VI) reduction by organic acids secreted by P. oxalicumSL2. RNA sequencing and bioinformatics analysis revealed that P. oxalicumSL2 inhibited phosphate transport channels to suppress Cr(VI) transport, facilitated iron and siderophore transport to store Fe, activated the glyoxylate cycle to survive harsh environments, and enhanced organic acid and riboflavin secretion to reduce Cr(VI). Cr(VI) exposure also stimulated the antioxidative system, promoting catalase activity and maintaining the intracellular thiol/disulfide balance. Cr(VI)/Fe(III) reductases played crucial roles in the intracellular reduction of chromium and iron, while nZVI decreased cellular oxidative stress and alleviated Cr(VI) toxicity to P. oxalicumSL2. Overall, the P. oxalicumSL2–nZVI synergistic system is a promising approach for regenerating Fe(II) while reducing Cr(VI).
