Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis struktur dan perkecambahan serbuk sari pada porang. Struktur dan perkecambahan serbuk sari diamati secara mikroskopis. Pengamatan perkecambahan serbuk sari dilakukan pada tiga hari sebelum mekar (M-3), dua hari sebelum mekar (M-2), satu hari sebelum mekar (M-1), mekar (M) hingga empat hari setelah mekar (M+4). Serbuk sari pada porang berstruktur dimorfik (struktur X dan Y: unit monad dan majemuk). Struktur X dengan panjang aksis (P)= 30-50 µm, diameter ekuatorial (E)= 16.67-41.67 µm, dan indeks P/E= 1.19-1.79, sedangkan struktur Y dengan P= 50-84 µm, E= 34-67 µm, dan indeks P/E= 1.25-1.40. Serbuk sari porang berbentuk subspheroidal dan prolat; ukuran panjang aksis bertipe media dan magna; tipe aperture monocolpate. Viabilitas tertinggi struktur X pada M (31.58%), sedangkan struktur Y pada M+1 (21.76%). Viabilitas M+3 mulai menurun, sehingga penyerbukan buatan porang yang tepat dilakukan ketika viabilitas serbuk sari tinggi (M atau tidak lebih dari M+3).

Papeja, herbal potions during breastfeeding in Madura (Indonesia): The use, perceived effectiveness, and documentation of the plants used. Biodiversitas 23: 5139-5148. The World Health Organization recommends breastfeeding as the normal infant feeding method. However, many women often face challenges in breastfeeding their infants. One of the challenges may be a real or perceived insufficient milk supply. Poor breast milk production is the common cause of breastfeeding failure in preterm babies. In Indonesia, Madurese women use Papeja (herbal medicines) as a herbal potion to enhance breast milk production. Hence, this study aims to identify the pattern of use, perceived effectiveness, and galactagogues plant component of Papeja taken by mothers during breastfeeding in the Sub-districts of Guluk-Guluk and Pasongsongan, Sumenep District. The data were collected through interviews using a semi-structured questionnaire. Sixty women who had agreed to be interviewed, 18 years or older, breastfeeding or breastfeeding in the past 24 months, and two traditional midwifery in the study area were interviewed. We used simple descriptive statistics to summarize the data on demographic, respondent attitudes, and galactagogues plants. Most participants (n = 48) perceived that the herbal galactagogues effectively promoted breastfeeding adequacy. We identified 46 plants from 27 families to have been used in Papeja. Some of the plants used by the mothers have been recorded as having benefits for enhancing milk supply, some have not had that information, but most have not yet been chemically tested. Thus, it is important to validate the plants scientifically for possible galactagogues properties, which can be harnessed for future use. Since we recorded those plants as ethnomedicinal and therapeutic plants, phytochemical and pharmacological investigations are recommended because this could lead to developing new medicine to address poor milk production among mothers.

Sofiah S, Hakim L, Indriyani S, Robiansyah I. 2022. Acclimation study of Smilax nageliana A.DC., a climber species endemic to East Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 4082-4089. Smilax L. species, popularly known in Indonesia as Canar, belong to the family Smilacaceae and have been used in folk medicine as a tonic against rheumatism and as anti-syphilitic. Smilax nageliana A.DC is an endemic plant to East Java, Indonesia which is only distributed in Ranu Darungan, Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (BTSNP), and Mt. Kawi. In the effort for its conservation and sustainable management, information regarding the adaptation of S. nageliana to a new environment is necessary. The aim of this study was to investigate the acclimation of S. nageliana under three different treatments, namely (i) in hood application in a greenhouse; (ii) in its natural habitat under shade; (iii) in natural habitat in the open area. Each treatment had ten replications. Survival and growth performance were observed for six months in terms of survival rates, number of new shoots, shoot length, number of leaves and chlorophyll content. Environment factors were also measured including solar intensity, temperature, humidity and water content. Data were analyzed using a two-way Anova. The principal component analysis (PCA) was performed to determine the relationships between environmental components and S. nageliana acclimation performance. The result showed that S. nageliana had a one hundred percent survival rate in the hood application and natural habitat with shade. The best growth performances (i.e., shoot length, the number of leaves, shoots per root and chlorophyll content) were achieved under the hood application. The average temperature was quite influential on the first component (PC1), followed by solar intensity while water affected the second component (PC2). The findings of this study suggest that where sunlight/solar intensity and humidity were controlled, it gave the most optimal results for acclimation of S. nageliana.

Production of vetiver in Indonesia is low, and its oil quality is not in line with market demand due to the low quality of plant raw materials. In vitro mutagenesis using ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) has the potential to produce superior vetiver variants. This study aimed to determine the effect of EMS on the growth and shoot formation of in vitro vetiver plants. In vitro mutagenesis was performed by culturing in vitro shoots on MS medium containing EMS with various concentrations (0.02; 0.04; 0.06; 0.08; 0.1%) for 4 weeks. The results showed that the addition of 0.02-0.1% EMS to the medium affected on in vitro shoot growth and the ability to form new shoots. EMS increased the percentage of dead explants and decreased the average number of shoots, the number of shoots formed per explant, and the shoot fresh weight. The higher the EMS concentration in the medium, the smaller the percentage of survived explants and the lower ability to form new shoots with the average number of shoots formed less. The percentage of survived explants on the medium without the addition of EMS and on the medium with the addition of EMS with low concentrations of 0.02 and 0.04% reached 100% with an average number of shoots formed ranging from 8.5-10 shoots/explant. Meanwhile, the percentage of survived explants on medium with the addition of EMS with a high concentration of 0.08-0.1% was only 12.5-25% with an average number of shoots formed was less than 2 shoots/explant. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of gamma irradiation on shoot growth and multiplication of Patchouli ( Pogostemon cablin Benth.) Two weeks-old in vitro shoots were irradiated gamma-ray, at doses of 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, and 75 Gy. The control shoot was not irradiated. The irradiated shoots were cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 0.1 mg.L -1 NAA and 0.3 mg.L -1 BA and incubated in a growth room for eight weeks at a temperature of 25±2°C. The results showed that the gamma irradiation inhibited the growth and multiplication of shoots. Explants irradiated with high-dose gamma-ray (45-75 Gy) had not formed shoot in four weeks of culture, while 58.3-83.3% of the explants without irradiation or irradiated at low doses 15 and 30 Gy formed shoots. The higher irradiation doses increased percentage of browning explants and reduced the percentage of forming shoots. Within the eight weeks of culture, explant without irradiation was able to form shoots at the percentage of 100% with 24 shoots per explant, while explants irradiated at 15-45 Gy were able to grow form shoots at the percentage of 77.7-95.5%. Geranium plant ( Pelargonium graveolens L'Her) is one of the geranium oil producing plants that has many benefits. Callus culture is a technique that can be used to plant multiplication and increase production of secondary metabolites. This study aims to determine the effect of the concentration of Benzyl Adenine on the formation of geranium callus from petiole and leaf explants. Callus induction was carried out by culturing petiole and leaf explants on MS medium + 0.1 mg.L -1 NAA + Benzyl Adenine (0; 0.5; 1; 1.5 and 2 mg.L -1 ). Callus morphological parameters, percentage of callus formation, and time of first callus formation were observed. The formation of geranium callus influenced by the explant type and the concentration of Benzyl Adenine. In the 2 nd week, the geranium callus was initiated, light green colored with a compact callus texture. At 4 th week, the percentage of callus formation containing NAA 0.1 mg.L -1 of petiole and leaf explants was 20% and 8%, whereas the percentage of callus formation on medium containing 0.1 mg.L -1 NAA combined with 0.5-2 mg.L -1 Benzyl Adenine of petiole and leaf explants was 52-80% and 24-52%. The best percentage of callus formation was found on the culture medium containing 1 mg.L -1 Benzyl Adenine, equaled 80% of petiole explants, and 52% of leaf explants. Casuarina junghuhniana or mountain ru, she oak or cemara is a species from Indonesia which grows in the highland area at an altitude between 2000 - 3000 m above sea level (asl). One of the highland area in Eastern Java (Jawa Timur) of Indonesia is Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS). The study site was on the Tengger Sea of Sands, Eastern Java, Indonesia where it is affected by volcanic activity. This tree, from some references, has not been well studied yet although it has been reported as a tree native to Indonesia. The lack of the study poses problems when there is a program related to planting the tree on a certain location in TNBTS for rehabilitation purposes. This study attempted to construct a Structural Equation Model that mapped some factors observed in the study site related to C. junghuhniana population. Explored factors for their relationship with each other included the number of male and female individuals, growth-related indicators, and environmental factors consisting of altitude and the tree population. Formative factors which consist of parameters related to growth, environmental factors and factor associated with the diffusion of new individuals, may contribute to population growth while population growth was the opposite. The individual growth might not significantly contribute to the population of C. junghuhniana ; instead, the population growth was affected by the tree individuals. Generative reproduction contributed the least to the dispersal as it may rely more on vegetative reproduction by adventitious shoots from roots.

Profile of geographical variation in marginal land and its relationship with the fruit tree species richness in Jombang District, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 22: 3315-3325. The purpose of this study was to determine the sites of fruit tree species richness, in order to analyze the relationship between the locations with fruit tree diversity, and geographical variations, towards the success of marginal land conservation in Jombang Regency. The study area covered four districts, and was divided into 11 sites with different slopes and altitudes. Multivariate analysis was carried out using the R program. The results showed that the structure and composition of fruit trees were discovered to be 21 species from 14 families. The uniqueness of the fruit trees was shown in Tamarindus indica and Cocos nucifera, which were observed as rare plants on slopes with high and low altitudes, respectively. The results of the geographical variation analysis also showed that the slope and elevation with values of 0.5889 and 0.5077, respectively, were significantly correlated with the site of fruit plant species richness at the (?) 0.05 level, as the response formed was not linear for the three geographical diversities studied. Also, the model built between site, slope, and elevation towards the fruit tree species richness was acceptable, due to the fact that the value (Pr> F) = 0.004 was very significant at the (?) 0.001 level.

Indah NK, Indriyani S, Arumingtyas EL, Azrianingsih R. 2021. Local snake fruit conservation in East Java, Indonesia: Community knowledge and appreciation. Biodiversitas 22: 416-423. The community-based conservation of plant species diversity by variety of utility is an effective method for preserving local plants. Salak or the ‘snake fruit’ from East Java is an important fruit plant species in East Java. However, recent dramatic decline in its production and consumption occurred due to land-use change of plantation into resident or settlement areas. This study aims to analyze the value of local knowledge and appreciation and discusses the conservation strategy to cope with the situation. This descriptive research adopted 328 respondents from 10 local and introduced snake fruit cultivation areas in East Java. Respondents were divided into four age categories: young (17-30 years), adults (30-45 years), middle-aged (45-60 years), and old (>60 years). The questioner consisted of closed and open questions about knowledge (9 questions) and appreciation (13 questions). There were variations in the level of knowledge and appreciation between locations and ages. The highest appreciation about snake fruit utilization was shown by the middle-aged group (85.53% and 75% respectively) based on the age group. In comparison, the lowest scores were shown in the young group (79.82% and 59.80% respectively). The points that support appreciation such as benefits and value of snake fruit for societal support. Based on the snake fruit cultivation area, the highest score for knowledge and appreciation of its value was found in Bojonegoro (98.1% and 87.01% respectively) while these were the lowest in Trenggalek (68.0% and 57.10% respectively). Appreciation supports community-based conservation through snake fruit festivals, product diversification i.e. making processed foods, and its use in religious ceremonies.

Yuniati E, Indriyani S, Batoro J, Purwanto Y. 2020. Ethnozoology of the ritual and magic of the To Bada Ethnic Group in the Lore Lindu Biosphere Reserve, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 2645-2653. The To Bada are a traditional ethnic group or community that lives in the Bada valley in the Lore Lindu biosphere reserve. In some spheres, the Bada people still maintain traditional values and principles. This study aims to identify the animals used in rituals, magical and traditional activities among the Bada people, to investigate the ethnozoological perceptions and conceptions that are influenced by social and cultural factors, and to determine animal conservation status. The research method used was a participatory exploration survey with in-depth, open-ended, and semi-structured interviews. The results demonstrate that animal parts used in rituals and various traditions include eggs, heads, horns, blood, flesh, and the whole body. In addition, some body parts and product animals are believed to have magical value, such as fur, sound, and the whole body. The animals used most in rituals are the buffalo, cow, pig, free-range chicken, and partridge. Animals that have magical value are birds and mammals.

The small diameter size with thin wall thickness is the unique character of S. lima, so it is appropriate to be used as raw material for environmentally friendly bamboo straws. This environmentally friendly bamboo straw has become one of the mainstay export commodities from Lombok Island. This research aimed at determining the diversity of S.lima in Central Lombok Regency through morphological characteristics and analyzing the phenetic relationship. The research was conducted from November 2020 to June 2021 in Central Lombok Regency. Determination of sampling locations based on literature and the community, especially bamboo craftsmen and S.lima collectors. There are 45 phenetic characters used in this research, consisting of qualitative data and quantitative data. Data analysis was used the NTSYS PC version 2.11a to analyze phenetic relationships. The phenogram was analyzed and subsequently used to develop descriptions of each S.lima which was found in the Central Lombok Regency. As a result, most of S.lima was found growing in community plantations with variations in the soil texture. The results of the cluster analysis resulted in 2 large groups, the first group consisting of 21 locations S.lima was found, and the second group only consisted of 1 location, namely Lantan. The level of similarity between the first group and the second group 2 was only 40%. Another group consisting of 21 locations showed a varying degree of similarity from one location to another (52%-93%). There are 6 locations that have the highest level of similarity (93%), namely, between Jurit and Presak bat, Bebante with Mekar Damai and Montong Terep, and Gunung Ise. The results of this study indicate that S.lima found in all locations in Central Lombok did not show significant variation when the growth factor was optimal. Further research by molecular approach is needed to determine the genetic variation of S. lima in Central Lombok Regency.

Recent rapid grow of culinary tourism has significant potential contribution to enhancing biodiversity conservation especially biodiversity of local plant species for local food and food preparation tradition in local community. Ethnic food has been explored as one of the indigenous resources for community-based tourism, in which it is important in community development and biodiversity conservation. The aim of the study was to describe the involvement of plant in local cuisine and the concept of ethno-culinary tourism products development. The research was based on ethno-botanical study through observation and interviews with local community and tourism stakeholder in Kemiren Village, Banyuwangi. This study found that there was 108 ethnic food menu in Kemiren Village. There are 67 species of 35 plant family were used in local cuisine. Kemiren Village has been identified rich in term of traditional culinary which are able to be developed as attractive cuisine in culinary tourism. Hipertensi merupakan penyakit yang disebabkan oleh meningkatnya tekanan darah. Penggunaan tanaman obat untuk mengatasi hipertensi telah digunakan sejak zaman dahulu. Hal ini dapat terjadi karena di dalam tanaman tersebut mengandung metabolit sekunder yang dimanfaatkan sebagai obat. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui keberadaan senyawa metabolit sekunder, struktur atau bentuk dan kerapatan sel sekretori senyawa metabolit sekunder berupa tanin, flavonoid, dan alkaloid. Sampel yang digunakan adalah daun mimba, belimbing wuluh, seledri, mahkota dewa, sambiloto, sambung nyawa, dan tempuyung (umur 4 bulan). Masing-masing sampel daun diambil tiga ulangan individu tanaman pada daun bagian median. Sampel diiris dengan dua metode irisan yaitu melintang dan paradermal. Irisan melintang dengan clamp on hand microtome dan irisan paradermal dengan preparat whole mount sebanyak tiga ulangan sampel daun. Masing-masing preparat diberi reagen spesifik yaitu tanin dengan potasium dikromat, alkaloid dengan reagen Wagner, dan flavonoid dengan NaOH 10 %; selanjutnya diamati dengan mikroskop. Sel sekretori pada belimbing wuluh ditemukan berbentuk capitate dan trikoma uniseluler panjang. Trikoma pada sambiloto ditemukan berbentuk kerucut dan juga ditemukan sel litosis. Pada mahkota dewa ditemukan sel idioblas dan pada mimba ditemukan sel trikoma uniseluler panjang dan sel sekretori berbentuk capitate. Pada sambung nyawa ditemukan sel trikoma capitate glandular, sel idioblas, dan sel trikoma multiseluler. Pada seledri dan tempuyung tidak ditemukan bentuk sel sekretori. Tanaman obat yang mengandung ketiga senyawa metabolit sekunder pada daunnya adalah belimbing wuluh, sambiloto, mahkota dewa, dan mimba. Kerapatan sel sekretori yang mengandung flavonoid dan tanin tertinggi yaitu belimbing wuluh berturut-turut sebesar 3,27±2,46 sel/mm2 dan 3,11±5,58 sel/mm2 sedangkan sambiloto mengandung alkaloid tertinggi sebesar 1,33±0,84 sel/mm2

In vitro propagation method for vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides L.) had been effectively developed in this study. Several variations of media were used for shoot initiation and multiplication. Shoot formation was initiated from crown explant cultured on MS media with the addition of 2 mgL -1 of growth regulator Benzyladenine (BA). Whereas for shoot multiplication, 3 mgL -1 of BA was evidently effective with the average shoot number was 126 shoots per explant. The application of high BA concentration (3-5 mgL -1 ) in multiplication media was capable of inducing more shoots, but the shoots resulted were shorter. In contrast, multiplication media supplemented with low BA concentration (1-2 mgL -1 ) yielded less shoots, but the shoots were longer. Plantlet regeneration was accomplished by inducing roots in the shoots yielded on MS media containing 1 mgL -1 growth regulator NAA. In vitro plants of vetiver had been successfully grown on soil media under greenhouse condition. By using foregoing method, it is possible to conduct mass propagation of vetiver through tissue culture technique.

Desa Simo Kecamatan Kendal Kabupaten Ngawi memiliki banyak area kebun, ladang, dan sawah. Kondisi ini mendukung tumbuhnya berbagai umbi. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah mengetahui keragaman struktur butir amilum, kerapatan sel idioblas, kadar tepung, dan clustering (pengelompokan) delapan taksa tanaman berumbi di Desa Simo Kecamatan Kendal Kabupaten Ngawi. Sampel umbi yang digunakan 8 taksa umbi yaitu garut ( Marantha arundinacea L.), suweg ( Amorphophallus campanulatus Bl.), ubi jalar ( Ipomea batatas L.), ubi kayu (Manihot esculenta Cranzt), talas ( Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schott.), gadung ( Dioscorea hispida Dennst.), ganyong ( Canna edulis Ker.), dan uwi ( Dioscorea alata L.). Umbi yang sudah dikoleksi diamati karakter morfologi umbi, struktur butir amilum, kerapatan sel idioblas, kadar tepung, dan clustering (pengelompokan). Data kerapatan sel yang mengandung butir amilum dianalisis dengan SPSS16 for Windows . Analisis clustering (pengelompokan) menggunakan software PAST. Bentuk butir amilum delapan taksa umbi antara lain: bulat, oval, segitiga, setengah lingkaran, bersudut, dan tidak beraturan. Kerapatan sel yang mengandung butir amilum tertinggi umbi talas (66,33 ± 14,74) sel/mm 2 . Kadar tepung tertinggi umbi gadung (9,53 ± 2,08%). Berdasarkan analisis clustering terdapat enam kelompok yaitu kelompok pertama uwi, kedua suweg dan gadung, ketiga ubi jalar, keempat ubi kayu dan talas, kelima ganyong, dan keenam garut.

The Alas Purwo National Park (APNP) has been designated as a world reserved biosphere by UNESCO. Reserved biosphere is an area consisting of the original ecosystem, unique ecosystems, or ecosystems that have degraded their entire natural elements; therefore, this biosphere is protected and preserved for research and education. To support the protection and preservation efforts, it is important to conduct a basic research for empowering the plant species. This study aimed to characterize the architectural model based on the branching tree and to make a key determination or identification of tree species in the APNP. Exploration of APNP area was conducted using the survey methods; it had been done by passing through the triangulated, going to the bridge Sunglon Ombo until Pancur, then rotating to the cave Istana, the lodge of Sadengan, then going back to the triangulated. The architectural model and the type of branch of trees in APNP were observed. They were stratified by 23 of the known architectural models. The data was descriptively analyzed then the key determination was made. The result showed 11 of tree architecture models consisted of Troll 14 types, Scarrone 4 types, Corner 4 types, Leeuwenberg 3 types, Aubreville 3 types, Mc Clure 3 types, Rauh 5 types, Masart 2 types, Holtum 1 type, Prevost 1 type, and Koriba 1 type. Furthermore, the 11 plants as the examples of the architectural model were described, completed with photos, and notes on endemic species of APNP. The identification key for multiple branching trees also was added depending on the model.

Flooding has been reported to cause various responses in plants ranging from wilting to death. However, there is a lack of information about wilting and dying occurrence in C. frutescens L. This study aimed to identify the influence of flooding on wilting and death in C. frutescens L. and to know the correlation between both parameters after flooding stress. Three varieties of C. frutescens L. (Cakra Hijau, Mhanu XR, and Sret) were used in this study. Plants were grown in a greenhouse and treated with periodic flooding treatments (controls, periodic 0, 1 and 2). Wilting was scored visually by a scale of 0-5 where 0 for no wilting, and 5 for plants that died. Death occurrence was observed by counting the number of the dead plant until harvest period. The growing of population of a pioneer species may show a unique behavior. Casuarina junghuhniana is reported as a pioneer species, this is because of its tolerance to adverse environment and transform it to become inhabitable for other organism. A comprehensive method involving field observation, the use of mathematical model and computation to understand plants behavior still needs to be developed. This paper is attempting to show a method to build a model for showing unique dispersal behavior of Casuarina junghuhniana. A relatively straightforward use of Fisher’s reaction diffusion equation, cellular automata based modeling and programming can show behavior easier to understand on a grid space. Some assumption must be used to represent the C. junghuhniana dispersal. As it is known that C. junghuhniana can reproduce both vegetatively and generatively, and both were assumed to have different dispersal behavior. Vegetative reproduction using shoots emerging from roots has pattern to spread close to each other. While generative reproduction by seeds which is lightweight has possibility spread further with the help of wind. The total model area of 1km 2 was divided into 300 × 300 cells which represents 1 km 2 area. Cellular automata apply the same rule to each cell and the result was observed from the pattern of cells interaction. A simple program was developed using Python with Jupyter Notebook an interactive computing environment. The number of iteration was limited before observed simulation reached one of area boundaries. The simulation running time was greatly reduced using Graphical Processing Unit (GPU) parallel processing. NUMBA was used as an interface between python and Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA), the GPU programming API. The simulation showed behavior of the trees spread downward along the slope. The wind direction simulation with additional data from wind rose available from internet was also demonstrated in the simulation. Modeling dispersal with influence from wind showed more sporadic pattern at further distance from originating parents cluster. The trees in the simulation showed clusters in dispersal pattern when rely more on generative reproduction. When the trees rely on vegetative reproduction by roots shoots, the population showed more like continuous cover. When concerning real 3 dimensional aspect, this simulation still can not distinguish vertical (z axis) aspect. It means two points would be seen as close to each other although they actually have far vertical distance. At this stage, the simulation has not yet been optimized to easily convert input from the wind rose. The wind information still needs to be written as code into the program.

Marginal land conditions are a major problem in reducing the level of diversity of species due to decreased soil, climate, and water quality and topography. This study aims to analyze the diversity index and the dominance of fruit tree species cultivated by surrounding communities. The research method uses nested sampling in 4 (four) sub-districts, each of which is taken three sample villages and each of them is made of three transect plots measuring sample plots 20 × 20 m 2 (trees), 10 × 10 m 2 (poles), and 5×5m 2 (sapling). Data analysis using the Biodiversity R application program with version R 3.6.1. The results of the analysis of the growth rates of the best tree species were found in Ploso Regency because they had the highest growth rates of trees, poles, and saplings. The diversity of fruit tree species is based on the distribution of the highest H index value of 1.47 and the lowest of 0.58 and includes areas that have an abundance of moderate species. Fruit tree species that have the highest importance value index are Mangifera indica (mango) 70.26% with a tree density of 139 individuals per hectare, then Dimocarpus longan (longan) 40.24% with a tree density of 153 individuals per hectare. The results of this study indicate that the community structure of fruit trees in degraded lands is more dominated by plants from the Sapindaceae and Anacardiaceae families which generally grow spread in the 4 sub-districts studied.

Cayenne pepper is known as a sensitive plant to water stress, either drought or flooding. However, not many studies on the plant's response to the naturally occurring periodic flooding have been reported to date. This study aimed to determine the agronomic and genetic response of cayenne pepper against periodic flooding and find whether RAPD profile reflects periodic flooding endurance. Three cultivars of cayenne pepper: Cakra Hijau (CH); Mhanu XR (M); and Sret (S) were used. Plants were treated with periodic flooding P0 (one day of flooding followed by two days of drainage), P1 (2 x P0), and P2 (3 x P0), and C as control. A completely randomized design was used for the experiment, and the data obtained were analyzed statistically. Plant height and the number of fruits between the control and every flooding treated plant were significantly different, indicating that periodic flooding caused the delay of stem growth and decreased fruit number of all cultivars. The number of branches was influenced significantly by periodic flooding. In contrast, the plant survival rate showed no significant difference among all treatments. The higher the periodic flooding, the higher the risk of plant death and increased risk of production loss. Jaccard’s clustering on RAPD profiling indicated that the group was developed based on cultivar more than periodic flooding. It was concluded that CH differed from others and had better endurance against periodic flooding, made it a right candidate for a breeding program.

The aim of the research was to obtain the method of porang’s tuber dormancy breaking. The source of porang’s tuber were obtained from Rejosari Village, Bantur Subdistrict, Malang Regency. The diameter and weight of porang’s tuber were 5-7 cm and 100-150 g respectively. The research design was Completely Randomized Design. Porang’s tubers were storaged in the photoperiod cabinet during one month. The levels of photoperiod were 0, 8, 12, 16, 20, and 24 hours/day. The light intensity of TL lamp was 400 lux. As a control it was used porang’s tuber that it was placed in the dark cabinet without light. Repetition was four times. The success of dormancy breaking was observed through the tuber capasity to grow that it was identified by bud emerged. Data were analyzed by ANOVA that it was continued by Duncan test (α = 0.05). The results showed that photoperiod 8, 12, 16, 20, and 24 hours/day during one month could stimulate porang’s tuber dormancy breaking. Photoperiod 16 hours/day emerged the height of buds 4.97 ± 1.20 mm and the diameter of buds 7.28 ± 1.22 mm at photoperiod 24 hours/day. The growth of porang’s tuber which is treated by photoperiod during one month were significantly different with control. Photoperiod 16 hours/day emerged the height of plants and the diameter of petiole were 106.38 ± 15.11 cm and 2.90 ± 0.29 mm respectively, while the width of canopy was 72.50 ± 22.17 cm at photoperiod 24 hours/day. Besides, the diameter and weight of harvest tuber were 7.93 ± 2.20 cm and 383.20 ± 23.58 g. The weight of harvest tuber increased 255% from the early weight of tuber. Photoperiod treatment promote breaking of porang’s tuber dormancy.

Background: The relationship of plant kinship can be done through the identification of the phenotype character that is the character that appears on the individual or plant organism that can be both quantitative and qualitative. The purpose of this research is to know the diversity and kinship of corn cultivar from Kisar Island Regency of Maluku Southwest of Maluku Province based on phenotype character. Methods: The genetic material used was six local corn cultivars and one comparative variety. The six local corn cultivars are Red ruby with a brown cob, Blood red corn, Sticky, Ripe yellow, Deep yellow, and White, while the varieties are Srikandi varieties. To know the effect of cultivars and corn varieties on phenotypic diversity, variant analysis with Statistica Analytical System (SAS version 9.0) was used. To know the character that gives the greatest contribution to the diversity of cultivar phenotype and corn varieties, the main component analysis is done. To know the kinship among corn cultivars based on phenotypic character, gross analysis (cluster analysis) with hierarchy method is performed. The main component analysis and gameplay analysis was performed using SPSS version 18.0 computer program. Results: The results of variance analysis showed a significant effect of maize cultivar on phenotypic diversity. Characters that contribute to the diversity of the corn cultivar phenotype are the proline level, the weight of cobs without harvesting at harvest, the weight of cobs without dryness of the oven, the weight of the cobs at 12% moisture content, the unleaded cobs at 12%, the diameter of the ear, the number of seeds per ear, the number of rows of beans per ear, the number of leaves, and the length of the leaf. The results of Euclidean and Euclidean girder analysis show that the local yellow cultivars are in one group alone and have a low similarity with other local corn cultivars as well as the Srikandi-based varieties based on their phenotypic characters. Conclusion: There is a variety of phenotypes of local corn cultivars and varieties of Srikandi compounds grown on Kisar Island of Southwest Maluku Maluku Province.

Background An ethnobotanical study on local cuisine of Sasak tribe in Lombok Island was carried out, as a kind of effort of providing written record of culinary culture in some region of Indonesia. The cuisine studied included meals, snacks, and beverages that have been consumed by Sasak people from generation to generation. Objective The aims of this study are to explore the local knowledge in utilising and managing plants resources in Sasak cuisine, and to analyze the perceptions and concepts related to food and eating of Sasak people. Methods Data were collected through direct observation, participatory-observation, interviews and literature review. Results In total 151 types of consumption were recorded, consisting of 69 meals, 71 snacks, and 11 beverages. These were prepared with 111 plants species belonging to 91 genera and 43 families. Fabaceae contributed the highest number of species to the cuisine. Cocos nucifera had the highest Index of Cultural Significance value and highest number of reported uses. Apparently traditional social and cultural values are still closely associated with Sasak food and eating. Conclusion Sasak people interpret their food not only as a material for supporting life, but also as a means to maintain a good balance between humans, environment, and spiritual needs.

Hyperhydricity is a symptom of abnormal morphological and physiological function which inhibits the regeneration of plantlets. In general, the main symptom of hyperhydricity is a change in the condition of the plantlets which looks clear (Glassy) as a result of low levels of chlorophyll, the high water content in the plantlets, and the abnormal anatomical structure of the leaves. Hyperhydricity can be controlled by reducing cytokinin concentration, increasing gelling agent concentration, and reducing ammonium nitrate and macro salt concentration on medium. Objective of this research was to reduce hyperhydricity in shoot tip culture of patchouli by modification of ammonium nitrate and macro salt concentration on MS medium. The various treatment concentrations of ammonium nitrate were 0 mg.L -1 (0), 41.25 mg.L -1 (¼ concentration), 825 mg.L -1 (½ concentration), 1650 mg.L -1 (1 concentration) and macro salt MS with 0, ¼ MS, ½ MS, MS with 5 replications. Hyperhydricity on patchouli shoots could be lowered, as indicated by the decrease in water content from 96% to 90-91%, the increase in total chlorophyll content, and the increased number of palisade cells and stomata on the leaf treatment outcome. The concentration treatment of ammonium nitrate showed better results than the concentration of macros salt in increasing the total chlorophyll content, but it did not differ significantly in lowering water levels and increasing the number of palisade cells and stomata. ¼x concentration treatment of ammonium nitrate could increase chlorophyll content of 0.16 to 0.97 mg.g -1 , but MS with 1x concentration showed the best result in the increase of number of palisade cells and stomata of the leaves. Citrus mandarin Batu 55 ( Citrus reticulata Blanco.) is one of Indonesian fruits commodities that have high economic value and consumers demand. The propagation of citrus mandarin by plant tissue culture generally was carried out on solid medium. The liquid culture system could increase cell multiplication therefore it became alternative method of plant propagation through somatic embryogenesis. The effect of initial cell density and Benzyl Amino Purin (BAP) concentration in liquid media were investigated. The initial cells density and right concentration of BAP given in media can increase cell proliferation of somatic embryo in liquid culture. Globular somatic embryo were cultured on Murashige and Tucker media with initial cell density 4, 6, 8 and 10 mgL -1 and BAP 0, 0.25, 0.5, and 0.75 mgL -1 . Growth evaluation of somatic embryo were obtained by weighing fresh and dry weight every 2 weeks for 8 weeks for initial cell density treatment and 6 weeks of BAP treatment. The result of the research showed that cell density affect the growth of somatic embryo of citrus mandarin. Somatic embryo with low cell density showed slower growth compared than high cell density. Peak growth occured in 6 th cultured with cell density 10 mgL -1 . In addition to cell density, the growth of somatic embryo in liquid culture was affected by BAP. The growth of somatic embryo on the media containing BAP showed better results than without BAP. The highest BAP concentration on media showed fresh and dry weight of somatic embryo increased. In this research, growth of somatic embryo is not optimal yet because fresh and dry weights of somatic embryo still increase with high concentration 0.75 mgL -1 of BAP. The research aimed to monitor surface water quality by using water quality index NSF-WQI and accurate biotic index of benthic macroinvertebrate. This study was conducted in September to November 2012 in some water tourism destinations in three regencies, i.e. Jember (three sites), Pasuruan (one site), and Malang (one site), East Java, Indonesia. Each site consisted of three stations (upstream, middlestream and downstream). Reference upstream and middlestream were located in the Meru Betiri National Park (MBNP) Jember. Water quality and benthic macroinvertebrates sampling were conducted in each site. While physical-chemical data consisted of TDS, DO, pH, NO 3 -N, TP and temperature were analyzed to determine the NSF-WQI index. Macrozoobenthic data were analyzed to determine three diversity indices and 11 biotic indices. Results showed that based on parameter of DO, TP, NO 3 -N, TDS and pH, water quality in downstreams were generally lower than upstreams. Upstream to middlestreams of two sites in Jember were good to excellent based on NSF-WQI water quality and biotic indices. Therefore, the water were qualified as drinking water resources and also served as safe recreational water. The accurate biotic indices to surface water quality in this study were % EPT, ASPT, HBI, FBI and % Gastropodes. Pasuruan is one of the districts in East Java known for a diversity of snakefruit. Two subdistricts, namely Gondang Wetan and Pasrepan, have been known for a long time to have the highest production of snakefruit in the area. There are four variants of snakefruit plants found growing in Kersikan, Ranggeh, Wonosari (belonging to the Gondang Wetan subdistrict area) and Tempuran (belonging to the Pasrepan subdistrict area). Although there are four variants, the community recognizes only two variants, namely Kersikan and Tempuran. To determine whether the four variants are each able to be distinguished as variants, this study aimed to analyze their diversity as well as to determine their relationship through phenotypic characteristics, the most readily observable characteristics and familiar use by local people. In this study, 15 samples were taken in each place for observation of 30 characters, especially rachilla, fruits, and taste. Phenetic clustering was constructed using NTSYSpc version 2.11a. As a result, the four variants of snakefruit were divided into two clusters, the first cluster was occupied by Kersikan, Ranggeh and Wonosari, and the second cluster was occupied by Tempuran. Both groups had 30% similarity levels. The variants of Ranggeh and Wonosari showed the highest similarity level (73.3%). The Kersikan was separated from the other variants by 63.3%. This result supported local convention for naming snakefruit variants grown in Pasuruan.

The effect of gibberellin at multiplication stage on somatic embryo growth and maturation and plantlet regeneration of tangerine ( Citrus reticulata Blanco.) var. Batu 55 was assessed. Somatic embryo at globular phase was cultured on MT media + 30 gL -1 sucrose and various concentrations of gibberellin (0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 ppm). The somatic embryo was maturated on MT media + 500 ppm malt extract + 73 mM sorbitol + 73 mM galactose. Cotyledonary somatic embryo was regenerated into plantlet on MT media + 500 ppm malt extract + 30 gL -1 sucrose + 2 ppm GA 3 . The results showed that the addition of gibberellin in somatic embryo multiplication stage increased somatic embryo growth and maturation and plantlet regeneration of tangerine. Optimum concentration of gibberellin needed for somatic embryo growth was 4 ppm which yielded two-fold fresh weight compared to control. The percentage of maturation was very low below 5%. The addition of gibberellin in media at embryo multiplication stage slightly increased the percentage of maturation about 1-2%. Thirty percent of cotyledonary embryo was able to regenerate into plantlet. The addition of gibberellin in media at embryo multiplication stage increased the regeneration percentage, even the addition of 8 ppm gibberelline yielded regeneration percentage up to 70%. This study was aimed to determine the effect of incubation at 4°C temperature during multiplication stage of somatic embryos on growth, maturation and plantlets regeneration of citrus Mandarin var Batu 55. Globular somatic embryos were cultured on MT (Murashige & Tucker) medium and incubated at 4°C temperature for 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 weeks. Maturation of somatic embryos was induced by transfering globular somatic embryos on maturation medium (MT + 50 mgl -1 malt extract + 73 mM sorbitol + 73 mM galactose). Cotyledonary embryo was regenerated on MT medium + 50 mgl -1 malt extract + 30 gL -1 sucrose + 2 ppm GA 3 . The research showed that maturation of somatic embyos at 4°C temperature inhibited growth and maturation of somatic embyos. Fresh weight of somatic embryo incubated at 4°C for 2 weeks lower than fresh weight of embryo cultured without incubation at 4°C, and continuous decline in longer incubation period. Maturation percentage of embryos without incubation at 4°C temperature was 15%, but embryos incubated at 4°C temperature were lower than 9%. There was no effect of incubation at 4°C temperature during somatic embryos multiplication stage on plantlet regeneration percentage. When obtaining plantlets, embryo maturation and simultaneous germination are important steps in plant micropropagation via somatic embryogenesis. Several studies have shown that the use of carbohydrates as a carbon source plays a significant role in inducing somatic embryo development in certain plant species. This study aimed to establish a somatic embryo maturation protocol for Batu 55 Mandarin ( C. reticulata Blanco.) by examining the effect of various types of sugar and concentrations. The results showed that the type and concentration of sugar added to the medium affect the somatic embryo maturation of Batu 55 Mandarin. Galactose and maltose enhance somatic embryo maturation more effectively than does sorbitol. The combination of galactose or maltose with sorbitol was able to improve somatic embryo maturation more effectively than galactose or maltose alone. The combination of galactose and sorbitol enhanced the maturation of somatic embryos more effectively than did change the concentrations of maltose or sorbitol. It can be concluded that sugar type and concentration had effects on citrus somatic embryo development. The combination of sorbitol (36.5 mM) with galactose 73 mM was able to augment citrus somatic embryo maturation more effectively than the other concentrations applied.

A secretory structure is a structure that produces a plant’s metabolite substances. Secretory structures are grouped into an internal and external. Zingiberaceae plants are known as traditional medicine plants and as spice plants due to secretory structures in their tissues. The objective of the research were to describe the secretory structure of Zingiberaceae plants and to discover the qualitatively primary metabolite substances in plant’s tissues via histochemistry test. The research was conducted by observation descriptive design, quantitative data including the density of secretory cells per mm². The quantitative data were analyzed by ANOVA and continued by Duncan at α = 5 %. The results showed that the secretory structures in leaves, rhizome, and the root of 14 species of Zingiberaceae plants are found in the mesophyll of leaves and cortex, and also pith in rhizome and roots. The type of secretory structure is internal. Within the root of Zingiber cassumunar Roxb.(bengle), Curcuma domestica Val. (kunyit), Curcuma zedoaria (Berg.) Roscoe (kunyit putih), Zingiber zerumbet (L.) J.E. Smith (lempuyang), Alpiniapurpurata K. Schum (lengkuas merah), and Curcuma aeruginosa Val. (temu ireng) were found amylum grains, while in Kaemferia galanga L. (kencur), Boesen bergiapandurata L. (temu kunci), and Curcuma xanthorrhiza Roxb. (temulawak) there were no amylum grains in the root as well as in the leaves. The roots of bengle had the greatest density of amylum grain, it had 248.1 ± 9.8 secretory cells of amylum grains per mm². Lipids (oil droplets) were found in the root of bengle, Zingiber officinale Roxb. Var. emprit (jahe emprit), Zingiber officinale Roxb. Var. Gajah (jahe gajah), Zingiber officinale Roxb. Var. Rubrum (jahe merah), Keampferia angustifolia L. (kunci pepet), kunyit, kunyit putih, lempuyang, lengkua smerah, Curcuma aeruginosa Val. (temu ireng), and Curcuma mangga Val. and van Zijp (temu mangga); the root of lempuyang had the greatest density of oil droplets, it had 10.4 ± 2.1 secretory cells of oil droplets per mm2. All of Zingiberaceae’s root and leaves did not have secretory cells of protein. Zingiberaceae’s rhizomes had amylum grain, protein granules, and oil droplets. Jahe merah’s rhizomes had the greatest density of amylum grain, it had 198.3 ± 21.1 cells of amylum grain per mm2. Jahe emprit’s rhizomes had the greatest density of protein granules, it had254.0 ± 90.0 cells of protein granules per mm². Kunyit putih’s rhizomes had the greatest density of oil droplets, it had 254.0 ± 90.0 cells of oil droplets per mm².

Rods fiber content used the average Ø1,031mm with a tensile strength of single fiber 39,305N / cm and fruit fiber to an average value Ø0,40mm with a tensile strength of single fiber 33,691N / cm. Making test specimen with a length of 20cm, width 10cm and thick 8cm. The test results of compressive strength after 14 days with the lowest value at 3% of additional material combination of fiber content of 6% fiber stem and fruit by 70,384Kg/cm² with a water content of 15,254% In weight position 2,935Kg as well as the highest value on the combination of additional material 0% rods fiber content and 3% fruit fiber by 98,821Kg/cm² with a water content of 15,031% In weight position 3,058Kg. Some plants that have wood economically value are found at Meru Betiri National Park, such as nyampuh ( Litsea monopetala (Roxb.) Pers.), bayur ( Pterospermum javanicum Jungh.), gempol kethek ( Lophopetalum javanicum (Zoll.) Turcz.), suren ( Toona sureni Merr.), sapen ( Pomentia tomentosa T. & B.), manting ( Eugenia cymosa Lamk.), pluncing ( Spondias pinnata (L.F.) Kurz.), mahoni ( Swietenia macrophylla King), and bungur ( Lagerstoemia speciosa Pers.). Anatomically, wood has specific and unique structure. Wood is a secondary xylem that consist of tracheary elements such as vessel and tracheid, fibers such as fiber-tracheid and libriform fiber, and parenchyma cells (ray system). The pattern of wood section is affected by intrinsic factors. Wood was sectioned in 2X1 cm² in measurement and then it was boiled during 1 hour, after that it was immersed in mixed solution glycerin and absolute alcohol (1:1) during several weeks until the wood smooth adequately to sliced. Wood was sliced by sliding microtome 20-25 µm in thickness, and then it was placed on the objectglass that contain glycerin and covered by coverglass, after that it was observed by microscope. There was anatomically variation of wood samples that observed, involved trachea and tracheid width, also schlerenchyme fiber length. Vessel of nyampuh is the biggest in diameter (35±4.7 µm), and parenchyma ray of suren is the longest in length (70±9.3 µm) among other species.

The relationship between humans and animals has existed since the past. Animals as a natural resource that plays a role in human life. The bada ethnic community that occupies the Bada valley in Lore Lindu biosphere reserve is an indigenous community called To Bada / Tampo Bada which has a local wisdom and acts as a strategy for life activities. One form of local wisdom is traditional medicine. This study aims to inventory and find out perceptions of bada ethnic conceptions about using animals in traditional medicine. This explorative study used semi-structure interview and in-depth interviews with open-ended interview techniques. Based on the results of this study there were 13 species consisting of 5 classes and 10 tribes of animals used as traditional medicine. There are 8 types of diseases that can be treated, namely asthma, liver, heartburn, eczema, itching allergy when cold, ageless, strong / massage oil. Utilization of body parts used includes the entire body, meat, liver, bile, and fat. The use of animals as medicine must be sustainable in order to stabilize the population in nature. The identification of species used as traditional medicines is important in conservation efforts.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of explant types and plant growth regulators on callus induction of geranium (Pelargonium graveolens L’Her). Callus induction was carried out by culturing leaf and petiole explants from ex vitro geraniums on MS + 0.5 mg/l 2.4-D + 0.1 and 0.3 mg/l Benzyladenine (BA) or Kinetin. Each culture was carried out in 5 replications, cultures were incubated in rooms 25°C and 600 lux. The parameters days for callus induction and percentage of callus formation were observed. Geranium callus formation was influenced by types of explants and plant growth regulators. Petiole explants was able to induce callus better than leaf explants. Days for callus induction at second week and percentage of callus formation of petiole explants were 58 and 58% compared to leaf explants were only 53 and 54%. Plant Growth Regulators BA combined with 2.4-D was able to induce callus better than kinetin. The best callus formation was produced from petiole explants cultured on MS + 0.5 mg/l 2.4-D + 0.3 mg/l BA by 84%.

This study had aims to find the optimum temperature for the extraction of the glucomannan with good physicochemical characters . The method that used for extraction was the stirring method according varies temperatures (35-55-75 o C), followed by centrifugation with speed 1500 rpm for 30 minutes at temperatures 25°C. Glucomannan was coagulated using 95% isopropyl alcohol. Parameters that observed included glucomannan yield, ash and water content, flour color, lightness of glukomanan as well as calcium oxalate contents. The results showed that glucomannan extraction at 55°C gave optimal results (63.1% per dry weigh of tuber), followed by 52.2% and 39.91% for extracted temperature 35°C and 75°C respectively. There was no different significantly in color of glucomannan flour in between temperature which had L value 25.17; 27.23 and 26.37 correspond with extraction temperature 35°C, 55 °C, and 75°C. The calcium oxalate content of all treatment was 0.03-0,11% . The treatments also gave 1.17-2.00% ash content, 4.6-5.53% water content and 49.5-2654.5 Cp of viscosity.

Porang ( Amorphophalus oncophyllus Hook.), a tuber plant, is intensively explored for export commodities from East Java and as a raw food stuff material for domestic industry. The prospects of Porang tubers as the healthy food is interesting, however some studies are needed for their allergy effects. It was thought that the allergy effects of Porang are caused by the composition of Calcium Oxalate crystal that leads the itching and irritation in the mouth. On the other hands, the food allergy is usually caused by unchanged protein during food digesting. Some proteins have been known that play a role in Calcium Oxalate crystal (Matrix proteins) formation, they are: Asp-rich and Ser-rich acidic proteins that are tightly bound to Calcium. So, substantially the allergen of Porang tuber is from the matrix protein, not from its crystal. The allergen in the food is usually a protein that is not change during the food digestion. In this study, it has been done the allergic test of some Porang tuber variants, namely: Sumber Baru-Jember; Klangon, Saradan-Madiun and Sumber Bendo, Saradan-Madiun, by ELISA-IgE from rat’s blood serum that have been orally treated by raw Porang tubers powder before. The SDS-PAGE analysis shows that the proteins bands profiles are similar between raw and steamed Porang tubers (appearance Molecular Weight: 18 and 15 kDa). But, those raw Porang tubers bands are thicker than the steamed ones. The thickness of those raw Porang tubers decrease from 25 to 50 %, compare to those steamed ones. It means that the steaming of Porang is effective to decrease the potential allergy of Porang for consumptions. The allergic test analysis by ELISA-IgE revealed that the potential allergy of Porang are: Sumber Baru (Jember) > Porang var. Klangon - Saradan (Madiun) > Porang var. Sumber Bendo - Saradan (Madiun), respectively.

The research on use of various plants for medical purposes was undertaken in Tengger tribe area, Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (BTSNP). The objectives of the research were to give information about species and potency of medicinal plants. Ethno-direct sampling was done through directly or semi-structural interview to the ordinary peoples, traditional leader and traditional therapist. The result of study showed that there were 98 species of medicinal plants that used by Tengger purwoceng ( Pimpinella pruatjan ), krangean ( Abrus laevigatus ), adas ( Foeniculum vulgare ), kayu ampet ( Astronia macrophylla ), pulosari ( Alyxia reinwardtii ), pronojiwo ( Euchresta horsfieldii ), sempretan, dringu ( Acorus calamus ) dan jamur impes were endemic grow in BTSNP. Tengger tribe did not cultivate the medicinal plants by themselves but seeking it in BTSNP forest.

In soybeans, drought stress causes 50% yield losses. Breeding for drought tolerance in soybeans has been widely developed using various methods, among which is polyethylene glycol (PEG-6000) induction to simulate drought in vitro. In a previous experiment, three somaclones with different levels of tolerance were generated. The objectives of this research were to determine the RAPD patterns of those somaclones and to investigate the correlation of the RAPD patterns to the drought tolerance characteristics. The results showed eleven RAPD primers capable of amplifying the DNA genome of soybeans, among which four primers were monomorphic and seven were polymorphic. Two of the polymorphic primers, OPK7 and OPK12, are capable of differentiating medium tolerance traits from other traits. Bands that are specific for medium tolerance against drought were 450 bp and 650 bp in size, generated by the OPK7 primer, and the band of 2000 bp, generated by the OPK12 primer. However, there was no band capable of differentiating between sensitive and tolerance varieties/lines, although some changing of the DNA sequence was detected in this research. This indicates that there are other factors responsible for the expression of drought tolerance.
