- Abstract
We evaluated 14 years of simulations from a high-resolution ocean model to identify changes in the upper water column of the Arctic Ocean since 2007. Comparisons of simulations with observations highlighted the model's capabilities for reproducing the properties of the Arctic Ocean. We then examined how the freshwaters, which isolate the sea-ice from the heat stored at depth, have seen their distribution and pathways changed over the last 14 years in the model. The freshwater content increased near the North Pole after 2012, while one of the largest reservoirs of freshwater in the Arctic Ocean retreated to the northeast. We also documented changes in the freshwater pathway exiting the Arctic with more freshwater outflow through the western Canadian Archipelago after 2015.

- Abstract
The Makarov Basin halocline receives contributions from diverse water masses of Atlantic, Pacific, and East Siberian Sea origin. Changes in surface circulation (e.g., in the Transpolar Drift and Beaufort Gyre) have been documented since the 2000s, while the upper ocean column in the Makarov Basin has received little attention. The evolution of the upper and lower halocline in the Makarov Basin and along the East Siberian Sea slope was examined combining drifting platforms observations, shipborne hydrographic data, and modelled fields from a global operational physical model. In 2015, the upper halocline in the Makarov Basin was warmer, fresher, and thicker compared to 2008 and 2017, likely resulting from the particularly westward extension of the Beaufort Gyre that year. From 2012-onwards, cold Atlantic-derived lower halocline waters, previously restricted to the Lomonosov Ridge area, progressed eastward along the East Siberian slope, with a sharp shift from 155 to 170°E above the 1000 m isobath in winter 2011-2012, followed by a progressive eastward motion after winter 2015-2016 and reached the western Chukchi Sea in 2017. In parallel, an active mixing between upwelled Atlantic water and shelf water along the slope, formed dense warm water which also supplied the Makarov Basin lower halocline. The progressive weakening of the halocline, together with shallower Atlantic Waters, is emblematic of a new Arctic Ocean regime that started in the early 2000s in the Eurasian Basin. Our results suggest that this new Arctic regime now may extend toward the Amerasian Basin.

- Abstract
The Atlantic Water (AW) inflow through Fram Strait, largest oceanic heat source to the Arctic Ocean, undergoes substantial modifications in the Western Nansen Basin (WNB). Evaluation of the Mercator system in the WNB, using 1,500 independent temperature‐salinity profiles and five years of mooring data, highlighted its performance in representing realistic AW inflow and hydrographic properties. In particular, favorable comparisons with mooring time‐series documenting deep winter mixed layers and changes in AW properties led us to examine winter conditions in the WNB over the 2007–2020 period. The model helped describe the interannual variations of winter mixed layers and documented several processes at stake in modifying AW beyond winter convection: trough outflows and lateral exchange through vigorous eddies. Recently modified AW, either via local convection or trough outflows, were identified as homogeneous layers of low buoyancy frequency. Over the 2007–2020 period, two winters stood out with extreme deep mixed layers in areas that used to be ice‐covered: 2017/18 over the northern Yermak Plateau‐Sofia Deep; 2012/13 on the continental slope northeast of Svalbard with the coldest and freshest modified AW of the 12‐year time series. The northern Yermak Plateau‐Sofia Deep and continental slope areas became “Marginal Convection Zones” in 2011 with, from then on, occasionally ice‐free conditions, 50‐m‐ocean temperatures always above 0 °C and highly variable mixed layer depths and ocean‐to‐atmosphere heat fluxes. In the WNB where observations require considerable efforts and resources, the Mercator system proved to be a good tool to assess Atlantic Water modifications in winter.

- Abstract
Atlantic Water (AW) enters the Arctic through Fram Strait as the West Spitsbergen Current (WSC). When reaching the south of Yermak Plateau, the WSC splits into the Svalbard, Yermak Pass and Yermak Branches. Downstream of Yermak Plateau, AW pathways remain unclear and uncertainties persist on how AW branches eventually merge and contribute to the boundary current along the continental slope. We took advantage of the good performance of the 1/12° Mercator Ocean model in the Western Nansen Basin (WNB) to examine the AW circulation and volume transports in the area. The model showed that the circulation changed in 2008-2020. The Yermak Branch strengthened over the northern Yermak Plateau, feeding the Return Yermak Branch along the eastern flank of the Plateau. West of Yermak Plateau, the Transpolar Drift likely shifted westward while AW recirculations progressed further north. Downstream of the Yermak Plateau, an offshore current developed above the 3800 m isobath, fed by waters from the Yermak Plateau tip. East of 18°E, enhanced mesoscale activity from the boundary current injected additional AW basin-ward, further contributing to the offshore circulation. A recurrent anticyclonic circulation in Sofia Deep developed, which also occasionally fed the western part of the offshore flow. The intensification of the circulation coincided with an overall warming in the upper WNB (0-1000 m), consistent with the progression of AW. This regional description of the changing circulation provides a background for the interpretation of upcoming observations.

International audience; We present the first sensor‐based profiles of the quasi‐conservative NO parameter obtained with an autonomous ice‐tethered buoy in the Arctic Ocean. Data documented the halocline in the Transpolar Drift and Nansen Basin in 2017. A NO minimum was found in the Nansen Basin on a σ‐horizon of 27.8 kg·m−3 corresponding to the lower halocline, while a lower NO minimum of 380 μM straddled the 27.4 σ‐horizon and marked the cold halocline in the Transpolar Drift. Back trajectories of water parcels encountered along the buoy drift were computed using the Mercator physical system. They suggested that waters within the NO minimum at 27.4 kg·m−3 could be traced back to the East Siberian Sea continental. These trajectories conformed with the prevailing positive phase of the Arctic Oscillation. The base of the lower halocline, at the 27.85 σ‐horizon, corresponded to the density attained in the deepest winter mixed layer north of Svalbard and cyclonically slowly advected from the slope into the central Nansen Basin. The 27.85 σ‐horizon is associated with an absolute salinity of 34.9 g·kg−1 , a significantly more saline level than the 34.3 psu isohaline commonly used to identify the base of the lower halocline. This denser and more saline level is in accordance with the deeper winter mixed layers observed on the slopes of Nansen Basin in the last 10 years. A combination of simulations and NO parameter estimates provided valuable insights into the structure, source, and strength of the Arctic halocline

[PHYS.PHYS.PHYS-AO-PH]Physics [physics]/Physics [physics]/Atmospheric and Oceanic Physics [physics.ao-ph] - Abstract
International audience; Properties of aerosol have been analyzed at the regional scale over the high Arctic north of Svalbard between October 2014 and June 2015 using the new version 4 (V4) CALIPSO (Cloud and Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations) data. Systematic trajectories have been performed for all identified aerosol layers. Results have been compared with lidar observations from IAOOS (Ice-Atmosphere-Ocean Observing System) drifting platforms. Space‒borne observations indicate a maximum in aerosol occurrence at the end of winter attributed to low‒level (0-2 km) and mid‒tropospheric (2-5 km) particles mostly identified by the CALIPSO Lidar CALIOP (Cloud and Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization) as highly depolarizing. Another maximum was observed in October‒December due to clean marine particles below 2 km as well as smoke and depolarizing particles above. The 532 nm aerosol extinction was a factor 2 lower compared to average values previously reported using CALIOP V3 dataset. Aerosols originated mostly in Russia/Europe at all altitudes, and also North America above 2 km. CALIOP aerosol subtype classification is discussed from case studies allowing to identify aerosols close to IAOOS platforms and follow their transport. Adjustments of the aerosol classification involving arctic diamond dust are proposed. Cloudy parts of trajectories are identified for further aerosol-cloud interaction analyses.

Seven ice mass balance instruments deployed near 83°N on different first-year and second-year ice floes, representing variable snow and ice conditions, documented the evolution of snow and ice conditions in the Arctic Ocean north of Svalbard in January–March 2015. Frequent profiles of temperature and thermal diffusivity proxy were recorded to distinguish changes in snow depth and ice thickness with 2 cm vertical resolution. Four instruments documented flooding and snow-ice formation. Flooding was clearly detectable in the simultaneous changes in thermal diffusivity proxy, increased temperature, and heat propagation through the underlying ice. Slush then progressively transformed into snow-ice. Flooding resulted from two different processes: (i) after storm-induced breakup of snow-loaded floes and (ii) after loss of buoyancy due to basal ice melt. In the case of breakup, when the ice was cold and not permeable, rapid flooding, probably due to lateral intrusion of seawater, led to slush and snow-ice layers at the ocean freezing temperature (−1.88°C). After the storm, the instruments documented basal sea-ice melt over warm Atlantic waters and ocean-to-ice heat flux peaked at up to 400 W m−2. The warm ice was then permeable and flooding was more gradual probably involving vertical intrusion of brines and led to colder slush and snow-ice (−3°C). The N-ICE2015 campaign provided the first documentation of significant flooding and snow-ice formation in the Arctic ice pack as the slush partially refroze. Snow-ice formation may become a more frequently observed process in a thinner ice Arctic.

[PHYS.PHYS.PHYS-AO-PH]Physics [physics]/Physics [physics]/Atmospheric and Oceanic Physics [physics.ao-ph] - Abstract
International audience; In the frame of the French IAOOS Equipex project, a new observational network is to be developed for the ocean-ice-atmosphere survey over the Arctic starting in 2015 to better understand interactions and in particular the role of aerosols and clouds in the Arctic. Eye-safe lidar measurements will allow to profile aerosols and clouds for the atmospheric part, with the objective to perform regular measurements and characterize their vertical structure and optical properties complementing satellite observations. Radiation and meteorological parameters will simultaneously be measured at the surface. A first buoy has been prototyped and deployed in April 2014 at the Barneo site set by the Russian teams at the North Pole. Measurements with the first autonomous backscatter lidar ever deployed in the arctic have been taken from April to end of November 2014 before the buoy was lost. A second set of data were acquired during the N-ICE campaign north of Svalbard during winter 2015. Up to four profiles a day (10 mn sequence each) have been performed allowing a good sampling with respect to meteorological analyses. Observations have shown that the occurrence of low level clouds was higher than 90% during summer. New deployments are planned in summer 2015 as the start of the IAOOS network. The project is presented, instruments are described and first results are discussed.

[PHYS.PHYS.PHYS-AO-PH]Physics [physics]/Physics [physics]/Atmospheric and Oceanic Physics [physics.ao-ph] ,[SDU.STU.CL]Sciences of the Universe [physics]/Earth Sciences/Climatology - Abstract
International audience; It is quite clear that for studying Arctic climate changes, and better understand interacting processes it is essential to follow an integrated approach for observing and modeling the whole Arctic system encompassing the atmosphere, the ocean and sea-ice at once. Due to the difficulties in retrieving key parameters, satellite observations alone are not the right answer. The project we are developing, is an attempt to tackle this challenge by providing and maintaining a new integrated observing network of instrumented buoys over the Arctic Ocean in order to collect simultaneously and in real time information related to the state of the upper Ocean, the lower Atmosphere and the Arctic sea-ice/snow.It is planned to operate several autonomous platforms in a network in the Arctic Ocean for a period of at least 5 years. Each platform is equipped to vertically sense and profile key variables in the ocean, sea-ice and atmosphere using- CTD (conductivity, temperature, depth) vertical profilers sensors collecting ocean temperature and salinity down to 800m depth,- Temperature and heat conductivity in snow and ice from ice-mass-balance systems- Cloud and aerosol lidar profiling of the lower atmosphere- Diffuse and direct solar flux using wide angle radiometer- Meteorological standard parameters at the surfacePlatforms allow measurements to be transmitted in near real time via Iridium satellites. As they will be drifting, it is planned to replace part of them every year.Major tests were performed deploying progressively fully equipped IAOOS platform at the North Pole in April 2012, 2013 and 2014. These platforms drifted from the North Pole in April to Fram Strait (September, October) providing spring summer and fall field data. Important fieldwork for IAOOS was also taking place within the Norwegian ice camp on board R/V Lance organized by the Norsk Polar Institute from January to June 2015, as part of the Norwegian young ICE (N-ICE 2015) cruise project. These intensive tests were very timely. The first IAOOS array deployment will start in August 2015 from R/V Araon during the Korean cruise organized by the KOPRI in the Canadian Basin and from R/V Polarstern during the German cruise TRANSARC II organized by the Alfred Wegener Institute in the Eurasian Basin. First results obtained in the frame of IAOOS will be presented and discussed.

[PHYS.PHYS.PHYS-AO-PH]Physics [physics]/Physics [physics]/Atmospheric and Oceanic Physics [physics.ao-ph] - Abstract
International audience; Better understanding of atmosphere-ice-ocean interactions and in particular of the role of aerosols and clouds in this Earth system is of prime importance in the Arctic. In the frame of the French IAOOS Equipex project, a new observational network is planned to be developed for ocean-ice-atmosphere climate survey over the Arctic, starting in 2015, to complement satellite observations. Eye-safe lidar measurements will allow us to profile aerosols and clouds for the atmospheric part, with the objective to perform regular measurements and characterize the vertical structure and optical properties. Radiation and meteorological parameters will be measured at the surface. A first buoy has been prototyped and deployed in April 2014 at the Barneo site set by the Russian teams at the North Pole. Measurements with the first autonomous backscatter lidar ever deployed in the arctic have been taken from April to end of November 2014 before the buoy was lost. Four profiles a day have been performed allowing a good sampling of cloud variability. Observations have shown that the occurrence of low level clouds was higher than 90% during summer. The project is presented, instrument performance is described and first results are discussed.

[PHYS.PHYS.PHYS-AO-PH]Physics [physics]/Physics [physics]/Atmospheric and Oceanic Physics [physics.ao-ph] - Abstract
6th International Workshop on Sea-Ice Modelling and Data Assimilation, 2014 September 15-16, Toulouse, France; International audience; The key to documenting and understanding change in the Arctic is continuous monitoring. The high cost of Arctic operations thus makes observationsby satellite or with long-endurance, refurbishable, autonomous platforms a cost effective solution to continuously observe on-going changes in nearreal-time. IAOOS (Ice Atmosphere Ocean Observing System, http://www.iaoos-equipex.upmc.fr, http://iaoos.ipev.fr/) is a nine-year France-fundedproject (2011-2019), developed by LOCEAN and LATMOS, which objective is to provide and maintain an integrated observing system over the ArcticOcean that collects synoptic and near real time information related to the state of the atmosphere, the snow, the sea-ice and the ocean.

International audience; The complex bathymetry of the Drake Passage and the meridional extent of the Shackleton Fracture Zone, in particular, force the Subantarctic Front (SAF) and the Polar Front (PF) to veer to the north, and the flow of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current concentrates in the Yaghan Basin. We have studied the circulation in the Yaghan Basin, using 3 years of velocity data (January 2006-March 2009) at five mooring sites and 18 years of satellite altimetry data. Mean velocities at our mooring sites show a dominant eastward component which decreases with depth, as expected, with a notable exception in the center of the Yaghan Basin, where mean velocities reveal a dominant westward component increasing with depth. The mooring data suggest the existence of a permanent, strong deep cyclonic circulation over the Yaghan seafloor depression in the northeastern part of the Yaghan Basin. The in situ data provide the first opportunity to compare altimetry-derived velocities with high temporal resolution near-surface current meter velocities in a large eddy kinetic energy environment at high latitudes. Globally, altimetry-derived velocities compare rather well with the in situ velocities at 500 m depth both in strength and direction. Correlations are high between the in situ velocities and the surface velocities derived from satellite altimetric data. Mean sea level estimates lead to reasonable mean surface velocities with, however, a slight underestimation of the mean velocity at the mean location of the SAF on the continental slope and a more important underestimation of the westward current in the center of the Yaghan Basin. A dominant mode of velocity variations (23% of the variance) is observed both in the in situ and satellite data, corresponding to a strong southward meander of the SAF upstream of the mooring line and a northward meander of the PF downstream of the latter. The 18 yearlong altimetry time series shows that the mode is robust and has a strong semiannual component.

47. An intercomparison between four tropical ocean models

- Abstract
A multivariate model testing procedure is used to intercompare several tropical ocean models, using the evolution of the thermocline depth during the 1982–1984 FOCAL/SEQUAL experiment in the equatorial Atlantic as observational basis. Four models of increasing complexity are considered: Cane's linear multimode model, a nonlinear 2-layer model developed at LODYC, the KNMI GCM and the LODYC GCM. Some of the uncertainties in the atmospheric forcing are taken into account by forcing the models with 3 equally plausible windstress fields whose differences are consistent with the wind measurement and sampling errors, and the drag coefficient indeterminacy. Although the resulting uncertainties in model response are substantial, none of the models is fully consistent with the observations, i.e., within the error bars. The more complex models represent the thermocline depth variations significantly better than the simpler ones, in particular when the comparison is done over broad geographical areas. When the whole intercomparison domain (12°N−12°S) is considered, the LODYC GCM performs better than the KNMI GCM, both for the yearly mean conditions and for the variations around the 3-year mean, while the 2 models have comparable performance in the equatorial waveguide (3°N−3°S). In view of its simplicity, the linear model shows much skill, in particular for simulating the long-term mean. The 2-layer model poorly represents the long-term mean position of the thermocline, but represents well the variations around the 3-year mean, outperforming the linear model in the equatorial waveguide. Along meridional sections, model performance may be more variable, stressing the need for a global approach to model validation. Finally, a coarse investigation of the simulations of the thermocline depth anomalies with respect to the mean seasonal cycle suggests that, because of the small signal-to-noise ratio, most models have only little skill in the 12°N−12°S domain, but more in the equatorial waveguide. The linear model, however, does not seem to have predicative skill for these noisy anomalies.DOI: 10.1034/j.1600-0870.1995.t01-2-00005.x
