Abstract

This study unveils insights into the spatial and social distribution of Portuguese lexical forms, or lexies, pertaining to urban life in the interior of São Paulo State. These lexies were collected through oral responses from eighty participants, elicited by nine questions addressing variants for terms such as ‘traffic lights’, ‘speed bump’, ‘sidewalk’, ‘curb’, ‘traffic circle’, ‘plot of land’, ‘city bus’, ‘intercity bus’, and ‘a small grocery store where one can also drink liquor at a counter’. The analysis examines whether these lexies establish themselves as predominant norms, indicated by both consistent spatial distribution and a relative frequency exceeding 50% across the localities surveyed. Out of the nine cases studied, eight meet this criterion, with the following overall relative frequencies: ‘semáforo’ 53%; ‘lombada’ 96%; ‘calçada’ 94%; ‘guia’ 84%; ‘rotatória’ 74%; ‘terreno (baldio)’ 79%; ‘ônibus’ (in the sense of ‘city bus’) 71%; ‘ônibus’ (in the sense of ‘intercity bus’) 51%. The ninth variant, ‘bar,’ nearly meets this standard as well, with a relative frequency of 41% just falling short of the minimum threshold.

5. Learning language variations in news corpora through differential embeddings

Abstract

There is an increasing interest in the NLP community in capturing variations in the usage of language, either through time (i.e., semantic drift), across regions (as dialects or variants) or in different social contexts (i.e., professional or media technolects). Several successful dynamical embeddings have been proposed that can track semantic change through time. Here we show that a model with a central word representation and a slice-dependent contribution can learn word embeddings from different corpora simultaneously. This model is based on a star-like representation of the slices. We apply it to The New York Times and The Guardian newspapers, and we show that it can capture both temporal dynamics in the yearly slices of each corpus, and language variations between US and UK English in a curated multi-source corpus. We provide an extensive evaluation of this methodology.

Abstract

This paper investigates relative, completive, interrogative and negative clauses in the language spoken by the Oro Waram and Oro Waram Xijein peoples (Txapakura family) in light of the generative theory. In theoretical terms, we propose there is a parallelism among these structures as the CP head is instantiated by the complementizers ka and ko. Furthermore, these constructions provide syntactic evidence that agreement on this language mainly depends on the syntactic position of each core argument. On the one hand, there is a specific agreement paradigm for moved subjects and another for in situ ones, on the other hand object agreement is realized only when there is no movement.

Abstract

Ice core dating is the first step for a correct interpretation of climatic and environmental changes. In this work, we release the dating of the uppermost 197 m of the 250 m deep GV7(B) ice core (drill site, 70∘41′ S, 158∘52′ E; 1950 m a.s.l. in Oates Land, East Antarctica) with a sub-annual resolution. Chemical records of NO3-, MSA (methanesulfonic acid), non-sea-salt SO42- (nssSO42-), sea-salt ions and water stable isotopes (δ18O) were studied as candidates for dating due to their seasonal pattern. Different procedures were tested but the nssSO42- record proved to be the most reliable on the short- and long-term scales, so it was chosen for annual layer counting along the whole ice core. The dating was constrained by using volcanic signatures from historically known events as tie points, thus providing an accurate age–depth relationship for the period 1179–2009 CE. The achievement of the complete age scale allowed us to calculate the annual mean accumulation rate throughout the analyzed 197 m of the core, yielding an annually resolved history of the snow accumulation on site in the last millennium. A small yet consistent rise in accumulation rate (Tr = 1.6, p<0.001) was found for the last 830 years starting around mid-18th century.

Abstract

Abstract Objective To evaluate the accuracy of transvaginal ultrasound in the diagnosis of intrauterine lesions, using hysteroscopy as the gold standard. Methods This was a prospective observational study with 307 patients. All patients underwent hysteroscopy after a previous transvaginal ultrasound to compare the results. The hysteroscopy was performed by experienced examiners, and transvaginal ultrasounds were performed in various public and private services, which is reflective of routine healthcare practices in obstetrics and gynecology. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of the transvaginal ultrasound were calculated using hysteroscopy as the gold standard. The level of agreement between the two exams was calculated using the Kappa test. Results Themean age was 56.55±12.3 years. For endometrial polyps, we observed a sensitivity of 39.8%, specificity of 72.7%, accuracy of 52.8%, and Kappa index of 0.11 (p=0.025). Abstract

Este artigo é um recorte da tese de doutorado Atlas linguístico pluridimensional do português paulista (FIGUEIREDO JR., 2019). Nomeadamente, ele aborda a variação lexical documentada no interior paulista como resposta à pergunta “Como se chama um rio pequeno, estreito, de uns dois metros de largura?”. A rede de pontos é constituída pelos municípios de Santana de Parnaíba, Pirapora do Bom Jesus, Araçariguama, São Roque, Sorocaba, Itu, Porto Feliz, Tietê, Capivari e Piracicaba, integrantes da região do Médio Tietê, considerada berço da cultura caipira (GARCIA, 2011; PAZETTI, 2014). Com aporte teórico-metodológico da Dialetologia Pluridimensional (RADTKE; THUN, 1996; THUN, 2000, 2005, entre outros), 13 covariantes lexicais foram coletadas de 80 informantes. Dessas formas, as mais frequentes e relevantes estão cartografadas e quantitativamente tratadas em correlação com variáveis diatópica, diastrática, diagenérica e diageracional. Um conjunto de conclusões é apresentado, entre as quais a de que Santana de Parnaíba é o ponto mais conservador da rede de pontos, dividido alternadamente entre o uso do grupo covariante / e o uso da covariante , e, inversamente, a de que Tietê é o ponto mais inovador, dividido simultaneamente entre o uso do grupo covariante /, o uso da covariante e o uso da covariante .

25. Outcome analysis of the surgical team in open surgical repair of intact abdominal aortic aneurysm surgery.

Abstract

OBJECTIVES To analyze how the experience of the surgical team went to impact the outcomes after open surgical repair (OSR) of intact abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs). METHODS This is a single-center, observational cohort study with retrospective analysis of all OR for intact AAA performed between 1 January 2010 and 31 December 2022. The primary outcome was survival at 30 days and in follow-up, and a composite outcome of mortality and major complication. The secondary outcome was freedom from aorta-related reintervention. All outcomes were stratified according to the experience of the operating team (surgeons and anesthesiology). RESULTS We analyzed 103 (7.2%) patients: 97 (94.2%) males and 6 (5.8%) females. The mean age was 76 ± 8 years (range, 55–93). The best possible team composition was present in 52 (50.5%) interventions. The follow-up index was 0.82 ± 0.18 (range, 0.6–1.0). Mean follow-up duration was 59 ± 43 months (range, 0–158). We observed no differences between teams in major complications (best, 17.3% vs mixed, 21.6%; OR: 0.4, P = 0.622), 30 days mortality (best, 0% vs mixed, 5.9%; OR: 7.6, P = 0.118) and composite outcome (best, 11.5% vs mixed, 17.6%; OR: 0.8, P = 0.416). Cox regression analysis identified the best possible team as a protective factor against the need for reintervention (hazard ratio: 0.2; 95% confidence interval: 0.06–0.88, P = 0.032). CONCLUSIONS In our experience, OR of AAA yielded satisfactory results in terms of safety and efficacy independently of the team's experience. Este trabalho possui dois objetivos iniciais: apresentar dados para estabelecer a hipótese que os dados obtidos de Martius (1863) e Faria (1927) são de um Karipuna da família linguística Pano; e, também, objetiva reconstruir uma proposta fonética preliminar do Karipuna Pano. As fontes linguísticas utilizadas são: Martius (1863) e Faria (1927). As fontes históricas e propostas de classificação foram: Noronha (1768), Keller (1874), Cardus (1886) e Manson (1950). A partir disso, montou-se uma tabela com dados de cognatos, acrescentados uma coluna de léxico Huni Kuĩ (Kaxinawá) e Kaxarari (os dois da família linguística Pano), com dados de nossa pesquisa. Como resultado preliminar, nossa hipótese é de que os dados do Karipuna em Martius e em Faria pertencem a um Karipuna da família linguística Pano. Assim, chegamos a uma tabela fonética preliminar do Karipuna Pano: [p, b, m, t, n, k, ɲ, h, ɾ, s, ʃ~tʃ, ʂ, w, j] e [i, a, ɨ, u].

Abstract

In this paper, we analyze the argument structure of verbal phrases in two varieties of Wari’ (Pakaa Nova/Txapakura), Oro Waram and Oro Waram Xiyein (Rondônia – Brazil). The data was collected from traditional narratives and from elicited sentences, in which syntactic and semantic tests were applied. As a result, two sets of particles were identified, one that behaves as associative particles, which coordinate nominal phrases, and argumentative particles that introduce non-core arguments in the structure. These two groups of particles present gender and number variation that denote an agreement system, which is sensible to these grammatical properties. Additionally, they are in an agreement relation with the nearest noun phrase. Therefore, the discussion presented in this paper aims to contribute to a broader knowledge of natural languages, as Wari’ is part of the group of languages that present grammatical gender and number features relevant to the behavior of these associative and argumentative particles.

Abstract

A linfadenite caseosa (LC) é uma doença infecto-contagiosa causada pela bactéria Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis. Acomete caprinos e ovinos e caracteriza-se pela formação de abscesso(s) contendo pus de cor amarelo-esverdeada e consistência tipo queijo coalho. A doença apresenta-se em duas formas, a superficial e a visceral. Os abscessos localizam-se, inicialmente, nos gânglios superficiais, podendo ser na região da mandíbula, abaixo da orelha, na escápula, no crural e na região mamária. Apresenta-se, também, nos gânglios internos (mediastínicos, torácicos) e em órgãos como os pulmões, o fígado e, em menor escala, o baço, a medula, o cérebro e o sistema reprodutivo

Abstract

Abstract Delayed Ettringite formation (DEF) is an internal expansive reaction that can damage concrete. DEF is strongly influenced by the temperature, above about 60-65°C, and other factors involving cement chemistry especially, but also its physical characteristics. The exposure environment over time also promotes a condition to increase deterioration from DEF. Expansions results from secondary ettringite formation are progressive and can lead concrete to microcracking impacting its performance and durability over time. Several concrete structures are pointed to be severely attacked by DEF, and test method as well a better comprehension on this pathology is necessary to promote specific and proper preventive measures to avoid future damages. Furthermore, compared to alkali-silica reaction, DEF occurs more readily and aggressively, and sometimes prematurely, depending on several factors, such as type of cement, concrete mix design, exposure conditions, among others. This paper involves an overall analysis of the behavior of concretes with two types of Portland cements (High early-strength cement and a Portland pozzolanic cement, with fly-ash) in relation to DEF process. Several data from a laboratory study where DEF was induced through a specific thermal curing procedure are presented and discussed. The analyses involved the assessment of physical, mechanical, and expansive properties besides microstructural monitoring of samples from concretes over time. These experiments allowed detecting high values of expansions from DEF (up to 1.2%) in the concrete without fly ash. The mechanical properties were severely impacted from this deleterious process; as expansions increased, losses in the mechanic and elastic properties were verified. Expansion levels in the order of 0.5% prompted remarkably high reductions and, at about 1% the losses were relevant for both strengths (tensile and compressive) and modulus of elasticity, of 60% and 80%, respectively, in the presence of cement without fly-ash. Concrete microstructure has indicated massive formations of ettringite as well as micro-cracking and the fragility of the cement matrix because of DEF. On the other hand, expansion up to 0.2% did not promote important negative effects on the properties of concrete, especially with the pozzolanic cement tested. Furthermore, an overall approach with several correlations between physical and mechanical properties was taken to obtain different levels of deterioration for a concrete presenting DEF.

The negation in Brazilian Portuguese syntax is studied via dialectology. The focus lies on the positional relationship between the negation operator and the elements within its scope. We explore the well-known trichotomy of preverbal negation, double negative, and postverbal negation. Moreover, we introduce a tripartite classification consisting of sentence negation, complex phrase negation, and constituent negation.
