The last two decades saw multiple attempts to explain how the self is represented in the brain within the framework of the Bayesian brain. However, these attempts largely focused on describing a developed, adult self-representation. The current paper argues that looking at the developmental trajectory is crucial for understanding the structure of self-representation. It argues that emergence of self-representations should be understood as an instance of the process of acquisition of new internal models of hidden causes of sensory input. The paper proposes how such models emerge and develop over the course of life by looking at different stages of development of bodily and extra-bodily self-representations. It argues that the self arises gradually in a series of discrete steps: from first-person multisensory representations of one's body to third-person multisensory body representation, and from basic forms of the extended and social selves to progressively more complex forms of abstract self-representation. It discusses how each of them might emerge based on domain-general learning mechanisms, while also taking into account the potential role of innate representations. Label distribution learning is an effective learning approach for addressing label polysemy in the field of machine learning. In contrast to multi-label learning, label distribution learning can accurately represent the relative importance of labels and has richer semantic information about labels. Presently label distribution learning algorithms frequently integrate label correlation into their models to narrow down the assumption space of the model. However, existing label distribution learning works on label correlation use one-to-one or many-to-one correlation which has limitations in representing more complex correlation relationships. To address this issue, we attempt to extend the existing correlation relationships to many-to-many relationships. Specifically, we first construct a many-to-many correlation mining framework based on self-representation. Then by using the learned many-to-many correlation, a label distribution learning algorithm is designed. Our algorithm achieved the best performance in 78.21 % of cases across all datasets and all performance metrics with the algorithm having the best average ranking. It also demonstrated statistical superiority compared to the comparison algorithms in pairwise two-tailed t-tests. This paper introduces a novel approach to representing and applying label correlations in label distribution learning. This article addresses the plurilingual writing practices of eighteenth-century women of letters through the case of Elizabeth Carter (1717–1806), a plurilingual poet and translator who mastered no less than ten different languages. To determine the forms and functions of plurilingualism in early modern women's letters, this article puts forward a methodological framework which combines insights from different fields of study. This framework moves beyond the notion of code-switching, and argues for a distinction between manifest and latent forms of epistolary plurilingualism. To determine the functions of plurilingualism in women's letters, it proposes a contextualised reading. The potential of this framework is then illustrated by a close analysis of Elizabeth Carter's plurilingual correspondence with Catherine Talbot (1721–1770). From this analysis, it appears that during the early years of their correspondence, Carter's use of plurilingualism was inspired by an awareness of the inherent differences between languages, and of the dynamic interplay between language and identity. Studying the plurilingual dimensions of eighteenth-century women's letters thus not only sheds new light upon women's linguistic capabilities, but it also gives more insight into the way in which early modern women (re)shaped their intellectual and/or literary self/ves through letter writing. The enfacement illusion is a facial version of the rubber hand illusion, in which participants experience tactile stimulation of their own faces synchronously with the observation of the same stimulation applied to another's face. In previous studies, participants have reported experiencing an illusory embodiment of the other's face following synchronous compared to asynchronous stimulation. In a series of three experiments, we addressed the following three questions: (i) how does similarity between the self and the other, operationalized here as being of the same or different gender to the other, impact the experience of embodiment in the enfacement illusion; (ii) does the experience of embodiment result from alterations to the self-concept; and (iii) is susceptibility to the experience of embodiment associated with interoceptive processing, i.e. perception of the internal state of the body? Results indicate that embodiment is facilitated by the similarity between the self and the other and is mediated by the incorporation of the other into the self-concept, but sensitivity to one's own internal states does not impact upon embodiment within the enfacement illusion. Video diaries are an innovative tool for ethnographic research, contributing to the quality of fieldwork and ethnographic data by giving additional attention to participant voices. Grounded in two fieldwork periods in secondary and higher education, this paper illustrates three key qualities through which video diaries contributed to ethnographic research: (1) Building trusting relationships with participants, (2) providing a space for participant autonomy, and (3) being a medium of self-explication and truth-telling. In video diaries, participants exercised free speech, providing a widely unmediated, personal perspective on their professional identity, roles, and relationships. This personal perspective allowed participants to contribute to trusting on their own terms, which mitigated face-work – especially when talking about conflicts and challenges – and provided additional entry points for conversations, enabling deep dialogue and understanding. Ultimately, the use of video diaries significantly strengthened the researcher-participant relationship and enriched the ethnographic data and the quality of interactions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article explores the role of private archives through the case study of the Tasca d’Almerita papers. It focuses, specifically, on how these archives can be used for mythopoetic and identity-building purposes, both familial and entrepreneurial. At the center, there is Giuseppe Mastrogiovanni Tasca’s operation of remodeling and organizing the Tasca d’Almerita archives, an aristocratic Sicilian family dedicated to wine production for generations, emphasizing how his work at the same time responds to needs of management and self-representation. The contribution, therefore, aims to highlight the importance of archives also as narrative devices, considering the implications of the ex post selection and organization of archives by the producers themselves, archivists of themselves.

Recently, graph learning-based hyperspectral band selection algorithms illustrate impressive performance for hyperspectral image (HSI) processing, whose goal is to select an optimal band combination containing less redundancy through the learned graph matrix. However, most of the previous methods work in single spectral domain, which neglects the rich image spatial information. Moreover, they typically model the graph matrix from a global perspective while ignoring the differences in spatial distribution that exist in diverse pixel and band regions. Based on the above considerations, to take full account of structure information in spatial and spectral domains, a structural graph learning method for hyperspectral band selection (SGLM) is designed. Specifically, SGLM constructs two matrices using the correlation between pixels and bands under the local perspective, which can capture the image structure information reasonably. Since the proposed method is modelled in both spatial and spectral dimensions, it is conducive to subsequent band subset generation task. Meanwhile, in order to guarantee local spatial consistency among bands, a Laplacian regularization term associated with the error matrix is introduced to the self-representation model. Additionally, considering that the importance of a band is consistent with its capability to reconstruct the entire band set, an adjacent bands reconstruction strategy is adopted to obtain the ultimate band combination, which can assess the significance of each band effectively. The comprehensive experimental analysis on four datasets demonstrates that the proposed SGLM model has outstanding superiority in comparison with several band selection algorithms. Background:  LGBTQ+ people have long used digital media for self-representation but platforms present specific affordances and constraints for sexual identity expression. Analysis:  This article applies the identity modulation framework to TikTok and the account of a user whose representation of lesbian identity is prominent. Conclusions and implications:  While TikTok allows users to control their personal identifiability, it incentivizes them toward a far reach. The platform's algorithm favours posts with a high salience of sexual identity, though only within the bounds of TikTok's vague policies on acceptable self-expression. This study explores how a digital platform constructs rural influencer’s manhood in China. While research on China’s Wanghong industry has primarily focused on urban, heterosexual female influencers, the practices of male digital labor in rural areas remain understudies. This research fills this gap by exploring the self-representations of 38 rural male digital influencers, categorizing their posts into six distinct themes: idle, skillful, positive, dramatic, nostalgic, and quasi-queer performances. This research probes how these rural influencers deploy signs of lower-class status on Kuaishou to engage viewers, foster community, and boost visibility while simultaneously reinforcing their marginalized positions within societal hierarchies. The findings, informed by Connell’s theories of masculinity, reveal a gradual transformation from a marginalized to a complicit manhood as these influencers achieve success, which further reinforces social stratification. Despite their increased visibility, the influencers remain constrained by platform dynamics and limited upward mobility, leading to the emergence of protest masculinities as a response to their entrenched social status. During the first lockdown to limit the spread of Covid-19, a new medial scenario has taken shape in all its rich complexity. The proliferation of tentacular info and iconodemic events has presented, in fact, the manifestation and the progression of a double media movement: on the one hand, the amateur involvement in multiple narrative processes, increasingly involving participatory audience and prosumers; on the other hand, the amateurization of cinematic rhetoric and languages, which are reconfigured in a logic of everyday narrativization. Accordingly, based on rule-making creativity, grassroots performances have set a dialogue with canonical and institutional authorship in the wake of the audiovisual narrativization of the Self in everyday life. Within this framework, certain narrative acts occurring during the pandemic have the power to intervene transformatively in the everyday life they record and tell through performative and amateur participation. In this perspective, the article intends to explore two fronts: the process and the contextualization of amateur performances, based on creative prosumers' participation, within a collective yet cinematic project; second, the impact and the role of audiovisuals as reparative media leading to beneficial self-telling practices. For such purpose, through the illustration of emblematic collective projects, the essay questions the potentially transformative and beneficial nature of self-representational and audiovisual performances that characterize pandemic and postpandemic mediascape. This study addresses a significant gap in our understanding of self-representation in historical news media reporting. It focusses on one significant historical publication: the first nationally distributed Indigenous Australian newspaper written and edited by First Nations people – The Australian Abo Call: The Voice of the Aborigines (hereafter The AAC). The AAC was published in six editions in 1938, the year of the 150th anniversary of invasion of the continent now known as Australia. The corpus consists of all (non-fiction) articles from all six editions of this newspaper, which was founded, edited and largely written by Yorta Yorta man J.T. (Jack) Patten. As such, the study offers a synchronic 'snapshot' of a particular moment in Australian history. The study uses corpus-assisted discourse analysis to explore the linguistic construction of self-representation – how First Nations people write about themselves and the communities they represent. I proceed from inductively identifying group-based identity labels to categorising these labels in terms of their positionality in relation to 'self' and 'other'. Using concordances, the study also qualitatively examines these identity labels through transitivity analysis. The results suggest that The AAC was a site of political awakening directed at both Indigenous and white Australians, calling on the former to mobilise, on the latter to listen, and on both to act. The analysis also shows that this activism sits very much within the dominant Western/Colonial frame, reflecting the historical settler-colonial context of the period in which this newspaper was published. The study has broader implications for corpus-assisted discourse analysis, by indicating the insights we gain by shifting our gaze away from 'other'-representation in mainstream newspapers towards 'self'-representation in community-led publications. Speech emotion recognition (SER) methods rely on frames to analyze the speech data. However, the existing methods typically divide a speech sample into smaller speech frames and label them with a single emotional tag, which fails to consider the possibility of multiple emotion tags coexisting within a speech sample. To deal with this limitation, we present a novel approach called self-labeling learning ensemble via DRNN and self-representation (En-DRNN-SR) for SER. This method automatically segments speech sample into speech frames, and then the deep recurrent neural network (DRNN) is applied to learn the deep features, and next the self-representation is built to get a relational degree matrix, finally the speech frames is divided into three parts using a relational degree matrix: the key emotional frames, the compatible emotional frames and the noise frames. The emotion tags of the compatible emotional frames are adaptive cyclic learned based on the key emotion frames vias the relational degree matrix, while also checking the emotion tags associated with the key compatible frames. Additionally, we introduce a new self-labeling criterion based on fuzzy membership degree for SER. To evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed En-DRNN-SR, we conducted extensive experiments on IEMOCAP, EMODB, and SAVEE database, the proposed En-DRNN-SR obtains 69.13%, 82.83%, and 52.31% results on IEMOCAP, EMODB, and SAVEE database, which outperformed all competing algorithms. The experimental results clearly demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms state-of-the-art SER methods, achieving superior performance on feature learning and classification. The pragmatic marker ha 哈 in Mandarin, has little meaning in itself; while some studies have looked into its usage in spoken discourse, we seek to address its usage and unpack its specific interpersonal pragmatic function in online, private, dyadic discourse, itself an underexplored area, and a setting in which participants are free from public scrutiny, unlike on mass social media. The results demonstrate that it can be attached to clauses and sentences to show the affect of the writer, from indicating a jocular and playful tone to softening a request. Therefore, ha is used as a way to express different types of rapport orientations and positive self-presentation. By drawing on personal WeChat messages, this paper bridges the gap by focusing on ha in technologically-mediated conversation. The expanding usage of ha also suggests a wish to create linguistic forms which can act as substitutes for non-verbal communication features. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lack of diversity in IDD research is typically conceptualized only in terms of (1) recruitment of samples that do not appropriately represent the sociodemographics of the population, or (2) the limited number of researchers from historically marginalized backgrounds. Critically, the field also suffers from over-reliance on perspectives and social systems of dominant culture-both in how disability is regarded and in relation to other dimensions of identity and culture. These lenses lead to research findings that reinforce, rather than reduce, social inequities. We propose a framework that minimizes reliance on diagnostic categories, shifts from deficit- to person-centered models, acknowledges people's multiple identities, and includes self-advocates and diverse communities as partners in the research enterprise. The systems change necessary to support this framework is described.

The account of his encounters during his American voyage can shed light on the foundations for criticism and praise. This essay addresses the critical attitude of botanist and astronomer Francisco José de Caldas towards Alexander von Humboldt in years 1801 to 1803. La relación de sus encuentros en el curso de su viaje americano puede dar luces sobre el fundamento de las críticas y los elogios. This paper analyses the self-representations of Portuguese media professionals and their work practices. Utilizing data from a broader empirical study, this paper delves into the dynamics of influence among various actors within newsrooms. Based on journalists’ perceptions of the content, the methods they use to assess the quality of the news are also identified. To address these enquiries, a survey was conducted among professionals engaged in the news production process. This sample comprised 72 individuals from various sectors of newsrooms, including photographers, designers, IT professionals, social media managers, and videographers. The main results indicate that seven out of ten respondents acknowledged their reliance on colleagues in newsrooms for success. Furthermore, the data suggest that there are no significant disparities among different professionals, with personal satisfaction emerging as the primary criterion for assessing the work quality. It is notable that almost twice as many women tend to indicate the low impact of the journalist on their work compared to male respondents. Moreover, most respondents stated that there is space for hybrid professionals in newsrooms.

Due to the development of social networks and the Internet of things, we recently have faced with large datasets. High-dimensional data is mixed with redundant and irrelevant features, so the performance of machine learning methods is reduced. Feature selection is a common way to tackle this issue with the aim of choosing a small subset of relevant and non-redundant features. Most of the existing feature selection works are for supervised applications, which assume that the information on class labels is available. While in many real-world applications, it is not possible to provide complete knowledge of class labels. To overcome this shortcoming, an unsupervised feature selection method is proposed in this paper. The proposed method uses the matrix factorization-based regularized self-representation model to weight features based on their importance. Here, we initialize the weights of features based on the correlation among features. Several experiments are performed to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Then the results are compared with several baselines and state-of-the-art methods, which show the superiority of the proposed method in most cases.

AbstractLesbians have long turned to digital media and technologies for information, support, and to self-represent sexual identity in ways that have the capacity for building communities and gathering publics and counterpublics. TikTok is a short video platform popular with young people, which has increasingly seen the participation of comparatively older users. This paper investigates the self-representation of lesbians over age 30 on TikTok to understand the themes in their content and how the platform shapes their communication with others. Through sampling tailored to TikTok’s algorithmic curation, ten lesbians’ accounts are examined alongside qualitative coding and analysis of 50 of these creators’ videos. Findings reveal key themes regarding the expression of identity and age, lived experience over time, and bids for connection and community. TikTokers expressed lesbian identity in continuity with longstanding stereotypes to enhance visibility but also incorporated humor and youthful trends to give rise to novel identity expressions. Videos showcasing the passage of time and sociopolitical change demonstrated the resilience of lesbian lives and conveyed hope while advice and statements of solidarity expressed support for young people’s present struggles with homophobia and transphobia. Contrasting with studies of TikTok’s generational wars, this article shows how older lesbians are building generational bridges through their uptake of youth-driven platform practices, sharing of past challenges to support youth in overcoming present hurdles, and by modeling lesbian futures. Although prior research has implied that emotional contagion occurs automatically and unconsciously, convincing evidence suggests that it is significantly influenced by individuals' perceptions of their relationships with others or with collectives within specific social contexts. This implies a role for self-representation in the process. The present study aimed to offer a novel explanation of the interplay between social contexts and emotional contagion, focusing on the contextualized nature of self-representation and exploring the social factors that shape emotional contagion. It further posits a causal loop among social contexts, self-representation, and emotional contagion. Drawing from the lens of self-representation, this study concludes with a discussion on potential research directions in this field, commencing with an exploration of the antecedents and consequences of emotional contagion and selfrepresentation. "Listing the Body: Embodied Experience and Identity in Autobiographical Graphic Illness Narratives" examines the popular use of lists in autobiographical graphic illness narratives to determine how they are used to address the subject's embodied experience of illness. After a brief discussion of what lists are and how they have been said to function in literary texts, attention is given to examining how the verbal and visual lists included in several autobiographical graphic illness narratives narrate identity as understood across the body, in the mind of the self, and in the mind of others. Asking how lists function within autobiographical graphic illness narratives to address the ill subject's fluctuating understanding of self as an embodied being, the article concludes that lists narrate the subject's lived experience of illness. This article addresses the notion of the web as a mirrored sphere. The debate about the primacy of a psychomorphic vision of reality, associated with the use of the new technologies of connectivity, is here related with the practices of self-representation and hipervisibilisation that are characteristic of the new communicative and social habits that take place in the network-system.

Edward Said advocated for Palestinians to tell their own stories, emphasizing the need of self-representation in literature, politics, and cultural discourse. He believed that by reclaiming their narratives, Palestinians might combat inaccurate portrayals, counter negative stereotypes, and assert their autonomy in constructing their history and identity. This study argues that Susan Abulhawa's Mornings in Jenin echoes Said's call for self-representation by using storytelling to communicate a Palestinian perspective. Abulhawa's method provides an alternative narrative to external portrayals, which may perpetuate misunderstandings or oversimplify complex reality. This study focuses exclusively on Edward Said's concept of self-representation while examining Susan Abulhawa's Mornings in Jenin. The question was raised using a postcolonial methodology. The data for the study was obtained from Susan Abulhawa's novel Mornings in Jenin, which was published by Bloomsbury Publishing in 2010. So, this study investigates the Palestinian perspective on the conflict as a decolonial strategy aimed at developing a political platform for Palestinians through a focus on their experiences and struggles under Israeli occupation. In sum, the author`s narrative contributes to a broader conversation on Palestinian identity, dispossession, and resistance.

Objective/Context: With a modernizing discourse and business partners, former Peruvian president Alan García led the sale of indigenous Amazonian lands to oil companies. The Awajun and Wampis peoples responded, alongside national and international allies, by demanding the application of ILO Convention 169 through various mobilizations known as “el Baguazo” (2007-2009). This study analyzes, from a deliberative perspective, how the visibility of the arguments and cultural representations of indigenous peoples influenced their self-representation in the public sphere. Methodology: Based on the review of journalistic sources, government reports, statements from national and international organizations, and literature on social conflict and indigenous peoples, the chronology and discourses of the conflict were reconstructed. Conclusions: The mobilized indigenous communities self-represented, expressing their demands and cultural identities (cosmogonies, notions of territory, and development), opposing the sale of their lands. The physical appearance of many people with disabilities leads them to feel stigmatised for not conforming to socially imposed ideals of beauty. These aesthetic standards convey lifestyles on Instagram that attract the attention of young audiences. In this regard, previous research has pointed out that people with disabilities also post self-representative images that are leading to new stereotypes of beauty with a potential impact on users without impairments. The aim of this research was to measure the attention and emotional intensity generated by a selection of posts on Instagram made by people with disabilities, in which they display their body image for aesthetic purposes, both in terms of beauty and fashion. Two neurocommunication techniques, eye tracking and galvanic skin response, were used on a sample of 120 Spanish and Portuguese university students who are regular Instagram users. The results indicate that young people without disabilities focus their attention on aspects of the image that clearly show a person's disability, especially regarding specific features, yet there were no appreciable changes in emotional intensity. Objective/Context: With a modernizing discourse and business partners, former Peruvian president Alan García led the sale of indigenous Amazonian lands to oil companies. The Awajun and Wampis peoples responded, alongside national and international allies, by demanding the application of ILO Convention 169 through various mobilizations known as "el Baguazo" (2007-2009). This study analyzes, from a deliberative perspective, how the visibility of the arguments and cultural representations of indigenous peoples influenced their self-representation in the public sphere. Methodology: Based on the review of journalistic sources, government reports, statements from national and international organizations, and literature on social conflict and indigenous peoples, the chronology and discourses of the conflict were reconstructed. Conclusions: The mobilized indigenous communities self-represented, expressing their demands and cultural identities (cosmogonies, notions of territory, and development), opposing the sale of their lands. The concept of vertex geography is proposed as the space in which executive mothers are simultaneously present in the domestic and work environments through the virtuality facilitated by technological devices (cell phone, computer, tablet). 16 mothers in Monterrey between 36 and 45 years old with a managerial position were interviewed to detect what the dynamics are like within the vertex geography and what are its spatial and discursive limits. The results are exposed from narratives of self-representation in this space, which allow to conclude that the use of technological devices perpetuates the double shift of the interviewees; but also, that its use defies the rule of physical closeness as the only way to exercise motherhood. The fight metaphors discussed in this article are linguistic expressions of physical conflict, a revolutionary legacy that still lingers in contemporary Chinese political discourse. This article takes a critical cognitive-linguistic approach to fight metaphors in translation, analysing a dataset comprising the Chinese governmental and Communist Party of China's congressional reports and their official English-language translations from 2004 to 2020. The discussion highlights conceptual metaphor's representational role and its ideological potential in discourse, and operationalises the English-based metaphor identification procedure (Steen et al. 2010) for Mandarin texts. Drawing on corpus-based evidence, the article argues that fight metaphors in the source texts (STs) legitimise and consolidate Beijing's dominance of domestic power by generating positive representations and reproducing patriotic ideology. The translations of those metaphors transform Beijing's image, assertive in the STs, into a non-aggressive one for the international readership. The target texts (TTs) also reproduce favourable representations from the STs to justify China's unique political system and to satisfy a pragmatic need – that of constructing positive images for the Chinese authority and China internationally. The present paper analyses the artificial intelligence future impact on mandatory representation in spanish civil proceedings. Firstly, the work studies the reasons for mandatory representantion and the constitucional limits to self-representation. Secondly, it analyses if artificial intelligence could condicionate these factors and what would be the adequate procedural acts to allow self-representantion with IA assistance.
