Aim: Compare the intima-media thickness (IMT) of the internal carotid artery with the IMT of the common and external carotid, vertebral and femoral arteries and the abdominal aorta to assess the possibility of using these arteries as markers of atherosclerotic disease., Methods: Fifty patients with atherosclerosic risk factors were examined and the IMT was determined in the carotid arteries and compared with the values of IMT of the vertebral and femoral arteries and the abdominal aorta. The Spearman correlation coefficient and Kappa index were used for statistical analysis., Results: Considering IMT equal or greater than 0,8mm, there was positive and significant correlation between the values obtained for the examined arteries. The best agreement was found between the external and common carotid artery as compared to the internal carotid. (accuracy of 73.5% and 79.2%, respectively). For all arteries the was a positive correlation of the values of the EMI., Conclusion: There is positive and significant correlation between the IMT of the internal carotid artery and the vertebral and femoral arteries and abdominal aorta. Routine examinations of either one of these arteries can ad important findings regarding early diagnosis for higher risk patients concerning atherosclerotic disease.

Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and risk factors for peripheral occlusive vascular disease (POVD) in subjects with diabetes mellitus (DM) in Brazil., Methods: We evaluated 236 diabetic individuals, in spontaneous demand, representing 471 legs. POVD was assessed by the ankle brachial index (ABI)., Results: The mean age was 62.1 years (range 22-89 years), 52% were male, 93.2% type II DM and the mean time to diagnosis was 7.9 years (range 0-37 years). Sixty percent were hypertensives. In 61% at least one pulse was diminished or absent. The prevalence of ischemia was 18% (ABI<0.9) while 22% had an ABI compatible with high grade arterial calcification (ABI>1.3). Overall less than 1/3 of the cases had the vascular exam that could be considered normal. The ABI was lower in subjects with pulse deficit (p<0.001), and a normal pulse had a negative predictive value for ischemia of more than 90%. Subjects with normal pulses were younger and had a decreased diabetes duration (p<0.001 and p<0.05, respectively). An increase in the duration of the diabetes was associated with a progressive decrease in the ABI (p<0.01). Female gender and hypertension were associated with a reduced ABI (p<0.01 and p<0.05, respectively)., Conclusion: There is a high prevalence of POVD in diabetic individuals. The disease is associated with hypertension and female gender and gets worse with increasing duration of the diabetes.

Evidence shows that climate change may have adverse effects on human health. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relation between Physiologically Equivalent Temperature (PET) and cardiovascular hospital admissions in Ahvaz. Distributed Lag Non-linear Models (DLNM) combined with quasi-Poisson regression models were used to investigate the effect of PET on hospital admissions. Low PET values (6.4 °C, 9.9 °C and 16.9 °C) in all lags, except lag 0-30, significantly decreased the risk of hospital admissions for total cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, ischemic heart diseases, and cardiovascular admissions in men, women and ≤65 years. But, low PET (6.4 °C) in lags 0 and 0-2 significantly increased the risk of hospital admissions for cerebrovascular diseases; and high PET values increased the risk of ischemic heart diseases and in men. Aim: Beside the intention of early detection and optimal treatment of deep venous thrombosis (DVT), the aim of this study was to investigate the influence of chronobiological rhythms on the etiopathogenesis of unprovoked deep vein thrombosis of the lower limbs with monitoring of seasonal variations in biochemical parameters. Patients and methodology: The prospective clinical trial included all consecutive hospitalized patients and outpatients diagnosed with DVT at the Vascular Surgery Clinic of the Clinical Center in Niš, starting from January 2013 to December 2014. Results: There was no statistically significant difference in correlation between the distribution of the incidence of DVT of the lower limbs (p = 0.582), sex (p = 0.350), age (p = 0.385) and localization (p = 0.886) and the seasons. Creatinine levels were significantly higher in patients who developed DVT in spring than in those who developed DVT in winter (p < 0.05), while LDL cholesterol levels were significantly higher in patients diagnosed with DVT in winter than in those diagnosed with DVT in autumn (p < 0.05). Conclusion: According to the results of the study, it can be concluded that in the territory of South Serbia, the seasons are not significantly related to the incidence, sex, age and localization of unprovoked DVT of the lower limbs. Background: The burden of disease from diabetic foot ulcers linked to peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is complicated by limited resources in low- to middle-income countries (LMIC). This precludes the widespread use of sophisticated imaging methods. Screening for PAD can include the use of low-cost tests such as the ankle brachial index (ABI). A scoping review was performed to identify what is known about the use of ABI in screening for diabetes-related PAD in LMIC. Methods: LMIC were defined as per the International Diabetes Federation Atlas. The following databases were searched using a comprehensive search term: Cochrane Library, EbscoHost, PubMed, Web of Science, Science Direct, Scopus, and Google Scholar. A total of 400 records were gleaned. The publication abstracts were screened through several rounds to select only those in which ABI was used in the context of screening for PAD to prevent diabetic foot disease. Results: Twenty publications were included, from MLIC countries such as Brazil, Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, South Africa, India, China, Singapore, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines. Ten ancilliary publications were identified. Conclusions: The widespread reporting and large scale use of ABI in PAD screening in Asia are evident, compared to fewer reports from Africa and South America. Many Asian publications report using faster, automated ABI equipment in conjunction with handheld Doppler evaluation of flow signals. Despite concerns regarding the potential for false elevations secondary to vessel calcification and non-compressibility, ABI remains a useful first encounter test in screening for PAD. Asian publications endorse and report the use of ABI firmly within the core clinical examination and consideration of other risk factors for PAD. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between aortic intima–media thickness (aIMT) and coronary artery disease (CAD) severity in patients with non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). SYNTAX score (SS) was calculated. Patients were categorized into 2 main groups according to the SS: patient with high risk (SS ≥ 13) and low risk (SS < 13). Common carotid artery IMT (cIMT), common femoral artery IMT, and aIMT were measured with a high-resolution ultrasound Doppler system. We had 147 (52.9%) patients in the high-risk group and 132 patients in the low-risk group. Both cIMT and aIMT were significantly increased, and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) was significantly lower in the high-risk group; aIMT (odds ratio [OR]: 1.272, P <.001), cIMT (OR: 1.239, P =.009), and LVEF (OR: 0.931, P =.002) were determined as independent predictors for the high-risk group. When the cutoff value was accepted as 1.25 mm for the aIMT, patients with high SS identification had 74.1% sensitivity and 89.4% specificity (area under the curve: 0.764, P <.001). Background: Increased carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (CF-PWV) and increased carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) in hypertension (HT) patients are indicators of asymptomatic organ damage. The relationship between carotid IMT and CF-PWV has been shown; studies comparing CF-PWV and IMT values within different vascular regions are limited. We aimed to investigate the relationship between IMT value measured from different anatomical regions and CF-PWV, and the localization of IMT that determines increased CF-PWV best. Methods: This study included 312 patients with HT. CF-PWV measurements with Doppler ultrasonography (USG). Vascular IMTs were measurements of common-internal carotid, brachial, and femoral arteries with B-mode USG (CC-IMT, IC-IMT, B-IMT, and F-IMT, respectively). Patients were divided into two groups according to their CF-PWV value (Increased CF-PWV >10 m/s and normal CF-PWV ≤10m/s). Results: Increased CF-PWV was detected in 54 (17.3%) of HT patients. The patient group with increased CF-PWV was older, and their CC-IMT, IC-IMT and F-IMT values were found to be higher. The other 3 IMT increases excluding B-IMT were closely related to the CF-PWV increase. Only age and CC-IMT values were found to be most closely related to CF-PWV. CC-IMT and age were found to be independently associated with increased CF-PWV. CC-IMT (each-0.1 mm) and age (each year) were found to augment the development of increased CF-PWV by 50.3% and 14.6%, respectively. Conclusion: There is a close relationship between CC-IMT and CF-PWV increase in HT. Background: Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is an important marker of cardiovascular (CV) risk and the risk of PAD is markedly increased in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Consequently, early diagnosis and treatment of PAD in patients with T2DM are critically important to reduce the risk of CV events. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of asymptomatic PAD in patients with T2DM and to investigate the demographic and clinical associations of PAD among them. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 2423 diabetic patients >20 years old, who were regularly followed up at the regional diabetes clinic, Galle, Sri Lanka. Data were obtained using structured questionnaires for information on demographic characteristics and risk factors. Assessment of ankle-brachial pressure index (ABPI) was performed in all. PAD was diagnosed when ABPI was < 0.9 on either leg. Results: The overall prevalence of PAD was 15.3% with no significant age or gender difference. Patients with PAD had significantly higher systolic blood pressure (SBP) (127 vs 125 mmHg, P = 0.002) and diastolic blood pressure (DPB) (80 vs 78 mmHg, P = <0.001) and significantly lower estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) (80 vs 84 ml/min, P = 0.007) than those without PAD. No significant relationships were found between the duration of diabetes mellitus, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and PAD. Conclusions: Prevalence of PAD was relatively high in the diabetic population of this study when compared with findings from other countries. To disentangle genetic and environmental influences on the development of femoral plaques using a population of adult twins. To evaluate the potential role of shared genetic and environmental factors in the co-occurrence of femoral and carotid plaques. The sample included 566 twins belonging to 164 monozygotic (MZ) and 119 dizygotic (DZ) twin pairs, who underwent peripheral arterial assessment by B-mode ultrasound in different centers. The variance in femoral plaques onset was due to genetic factors and the remaining 50% was explained by common (15%) and unique (35%) environmental factors. Findings on sidedness and number of femoral plaques indicated that also these traits were mainly under genetic control. No effect of common environment was found on plaques composition, and variability of this trait was explained by genetics (64%) and unique environment (36%). Covariation between the liabilities to carotid and femoral plaques was mainly attributed to shared genes (77%), with the remaining 23% explained by individual-specific environmental factors shared by the two districts. Inter-individual differences in plaque onset as well as in their number, sidedness and composition are mainly genetic in origin. Background: Previous studies have demonstrated higher rates of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) in blacks and lower in Asians compared to whites. The aim of this study is to undertake a comprehensive review of literature on ethnic differences in the epidemiology of PAD.Methods: A systemic review and meta-analysis included studies reporting PAD prevalence in general or diabetic populations, and comparing PAD prevalence in ethnic groups.Results: Mean prevalence of PAD in general population for whites, blacks and Asians was 3.5%, 6.7% and 3.7% respectively. Meta-analysis demonstrated higher prevalence of PAD in blacks (p < 0.001) and lower amongst Asians (p < 0.001), compared to whites. In diabetic population, the mean prevalence of PAD for whites, blacks, east Asians and south Asians was 17%, 25.3%, 13.5% and 7.6% respectively. In diabetic population, south Asians had a lower PAD prevalence (p < 0.001) compared to whites; there was no significant difference between blacks and whites. Overall females have higher PAD rates, in general (3.8% vs 3.2%; p < 0.001) and in diabetic population (13.7% vs 10%; p < 0.001).Conclusion: Blacks are vulnerable to PAD, in contrast to Asians who have lower prevalence of PAD when compared to whites. We compared intima-media thickness (IMT) and the prevalence of plaques in the common carotid artery (CCA) and common femoral artery (CFA) in apparently healthy participants. This multicenter study included 322 participants (59.9% female; age 20-78 years, mean 52.1 ± 15.3 years) who underwent Echo-color Doppler examination of the CCA and CFA bilaterally. Prevalence and composition of plaque were recorded. A significant (P < .01) difference between mean CCA-IMT and mean CFA-IMT was detected (0.70 vs 0.73 mm). Plaque prevalence was significantly higher in the CFA compared to the CCA (40.7% vs 30.4%). Atherosclerotic plaques were found in both CFA and CCA in 46% of the cases, solely in CFA in 38%, and in CCA alone in 17%. The observed difference in plaque prevalence was even greater when only fibrolipid isolated plaques were considered (CFA 39.4% vs CCA 22.1%). In a healthy general population, atherosclerotic plaques were present in the CFA but not in the CCA in over onethird of the cases.
