Patients with mental health problems typically have to wait for psychological therapies. This study aimed to investigate the effects of a placebo administered to patients with depression while they were waiting for cognitive-behavioral therapy. Sixty-seven patients were randomly assigned to a three-week waiting period with or without treatment with a take-home placebo for daily usage (herbal medicine to mobilize the body's natural healing powers to be taken orally). Symptoms of depression (self-rated and clinician-rated) were assessed at the beginning and end of the waiting period. Moreover, each week the patients evaluated levels of energy, concentration, relaxation, well-being, and sleep quality. The placebo group showed a greater reduction in symptoms of depression (self-rated and clinician-rated) compared to the standard group. Moreover, placebo treatment was associated with improved overall well-being during the waiting period. In conclusion, placebo treatment can make the wait time for psychotherapy more tolerable for patients with depression. In the context of large-scale surveys, pre-screening or longitudinal studies, researchers may be faced with the choice of using a brief measure of disgust propensity (DP: the general tendency to respond with the emotion of disgust to any given situation) or using no measure at all. The goal of the present study was to develop and validate such a short scale based on the Questionnaire for the Assessment of Disgust Propensity (QADP); Schienle et al., 2002 (See CR31)). The participants (n = 1367; 80% female; mean age = 28 years) completed the QADP, and scales on disgust sensitivity and self-disgust. Brain structural data and disgust rating data were available for subsets of the total sample. Factor analysis revealed a five-factor structure of the QADP. A total of 10 items (two items for each factor) with the highest item-total correlations were selected. The resulting five-factor QADP (Cronbach's alpha = .76) covers a broad range of disgust domains. The short QADP is correlated with the original questionnaire (r = .90), disgust sensitivity, disgust ratings for gustatory, olfactory and visual disgust elicitors, and volume in the insular cortex (a brain region involved in disgust processing). Previous research has shown that people who endorse conspiracy theories are more prone to the conjunction fallacy: the tendency to perceive conjunct events as more probable than constituent events. The present study examined the relationship between specific beliefs (belief in conspiracy theories, religiosity) and the susceptibility to conjunction errors (CEs) in specific domains. A total of 500 participants was presented with brief scenarios from the domains "coronavirus conspiracy," "miraculous healing," and a control condition. Each scenario included one statement about a separate event and a second statement about two joint events co-occurring. The participants estimated the probability of each statement. Results showed that the number of CEs made in the coronavirus domain was only associated with the belief in conspiracy theories, while general religiosity was only associated with CEs for scenarios describing miraculous healings. The assessed beliefs were not associated with CEs made in the control condition. Results suggest that distinct beliefs are uniquely associated with the susceptibility to conjunction errors in particular domains.

Background: A high level of food cue reactivity (FCR) is a risk factor for overeating and weight gain. This randomized trial investigated whether open-label placebos (OLPs: placebos honestly administered) can reduce FCR (reported appetite) in children and adolescents. Method: Children (n = 73; 8–12 years old) and adolescents (n = 187; 16–18 years old) were randomly assigned to either an OLP group or a control group (without OLP). Participants viewed images depicting food (sweets and fruits) and non-food items. Before viewing, the OLP group received a placebo for appetite reduction. Participants rated their desire to eat the depicted food items (0–100) and the perceived effectiveness of the OLP intervention. Results: The OLP exhibited a large effect in children, leading to a general reduction in appetite (group difference OLP vs. no OLP: M = −20.8; ηp2 = 0.20). This general effect was absent in adolescents, whose appetite reduction was restricted to fruits (OLP vs. no OLP: M = −8.1; ηp2 = 0.03). Additionally, children perceived the OLP as more effective than adolescents. Background: Caress-like touch activates C-tactile (CT) afferents present in the skin of humans. It is generally assumed that this type of touch provides beneficial effects throughout the lifespan. However, little is known about its processing in later adulthood. Moreover, emotional responses to interpersonal vs. self-touch have not been investigated in older adults. Method: A total of 132 females from two age groups (older: 60–96 years; younger: 18–30) participated in a well-validated method of tactile stimulation, in which CT-optimal vs. nonoptimal soft brushing (3 cm/s vs. 30 cm/s) was administered on the forearms of the participants, once by a female experimenter and once by the participant themselves. All participants rated their affective state in each of the conditions and tactile acuity was assessed. Results: Relative to the younger group, older participants rated touch as more pleasant, independent of type (CT-optimal, non-optimal) and origin (experimenter, self). In the older group, the emotional differentiation of CT-optimal vs. non-optimal touch was reduced, which was associated with reduced tactile acuity. Conclusion: This study revealed an age-dependent enhancement of the perceived pleasantness of (self)touch. Interventions with auditory-guided CT-optimal self-touch could be easily implemented as part of training programs for older adults. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Studies with adults and school children have shown that placebos can enhance motivation and performance in physical activities. This study aimed to investigate whether similar effects are present in kindergarten-aged children. A total of 101 children (58 girls, 43 boys) aged 3 to 6 years were randomly assigned to one of two groups that either received a deceptive placebo (DP: "magic potion") or a nondeceptive placebo (NDP: "water") to enhance physical abilities. Each child completed three tasks (sprinting; balancing: standing on a balance board; strength: using a handheld dynamometer) both with and without the placebo. The variables assessed included task performance, enjoyment, and expected and perceived placebo efficacy (measured with nonverbal pictorial rating scales). Results showed that both the DP and NDP increased speed. For strength, balance, and task enjoyment (which was very high), no placebo-induced changes were observed. Expected efficacy was higher for the DP; perceived efficacy did not differ between DP and NDP. In conclusion, reported outcome expectations indicated that kindergarten-aged children were already able to differentiate between the two types of placebos which exhibited positive effects concerning running performance. This encourages further research on using nondeceptive placebos to enhance physical activity, which is crucial for children's overall health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
