5. Local order in Cr-Fe-Co-Ni : Experiment and electronic structure calculations

Abstract

A quenched-in state of thermal equilibrium (at 723 K) in a single crystal of Cr-Fe-Co-Ni close to equal atomic percent was studied. Atom probe tomography revealed a single-phase state with no signs of long-range order. The presence of short-range order (SRO) was established by diffuse x-ray scattering exploiting the variation in scattering contrast close to the absorption edges of the constituents: At the incoming photon energies of 5969, 7092, and 8313 eV, SRO maxima that result from the linear superposition of the six partial SRO scattering patterns, were always found at X position. Electronic structure calculations showed that this type of maximum stems from the strong Cr-Ni and Cr-Co pair correlations, that are furthermore connected with the largest scattering contrast at 5969 eV. The calculated effective pair interaction parameters revealed an order-disorder transition at approximately 500 K to a L12-type (Fe,Co,Ni)3Cr structure. The calculated magnetic exchange interactions were dominantly of the antiferromagnetic type between Cr and any other alloy component and ferromagnetic between Fe, Co, and Ni. They yielded a Curie temperature (TC) of 120 K, close to experimental findings. Despite the low value of TC, the global magnetic state strongly affects chemical and elastic interactions in this system. 7. Tangible Information : Gestures for a Portable e-Nursing touch screen interface

Abstract

Elderly persons make use of significantly more emergency medical services than do younger adults. The elderly are more prone to medical emergencies such as cardiac arrests, falls or diabetic seizures. Our prototype called Portable Medical Monitoring Computer PMMC was developed to provide a possible solution to efficient elderly care, especially in such emergency situations. It is an addition to our ReMoteCare system which uses a wireless sensor network to monitor the elderly in aged care facilities. PMMC is classified as a touchable Medical e-Nursing Information System to support registered nurses in nursing homes with vital sign parameters and other medical information about residents who are suffering a medical emergency. The âuser centred designâ application was predicated on the concept of a portable computer with a touch screen, which allows users to access information next to the casualty at the point-of-treatment. The paper reports on the results of usability issues found during testing, specifically with our gesture enabled interface. We suggest improvements to make the interface more intuitive and suitable for humansâ interaction.

Abstract

A common occurence in any nursing home for the elderly is a medical emergency such as a cardiac arrest, a fall or a diabetic seizure. Our goal was to provide an effective and supportive graphical user interface for nursing personnel and care-givers who are first responders to such an emergency situation. A prototype called portable medical monitoring computer (PMMC) was developed to provide a possible solution to the growing demand for effective, appropriate and efficient elderly care, especiall in emergency situations. It is classified as a touchable Medical e-Nursing Information System to support registered nurses in nursing homes with a vital sign parameters and other medical information about residents who are suffering a medical emergency. The application was designed around the concept of a portable computer with a touch screen, which allows users to access information next to the casualty at the point-of-treatment. The main goal of this project was to design a usable interface for this emergency deployment scenario. This front-end application receives a variety information, including vital sign information from existing wireless sensor network called ReMoteCare. This application prototype has the potential to significantly help serve the future needs of caregivers during an emergency situation through its easy to use, straight forward interface that allows quick and accurate access to vital sign and medical data. The paper reports on the advantages and improvements related to the mobile touch screen GUI.

9. Effect of magnetism and atomic order on static atomic displacements in the Invar alloy Fe-27 at.% Pt

Abstract

Fe-27 at.% Pt was aged at 1123 K and quenched to room temperature (RT) to set up a state of thermal equilibrium. The local atomic arrangement was studied by diffuse x-ray scattering above (at 427 K) and below (at RT) the Curie temperature as well as at RT under a saturating magnetic field. The separated short-range order scattering remained unchanged for all three states, with maxima at 100 positions. Effective pair interaction parameters determined by the inverse Monte Carlo method gave an order-disorder transition temperature of about 1088 K, close to direct experimental findings. The species-dependent static atomic displacements for the first two shells show large differences, with a strong increase in magnitude from the state at 427 K over RT to the state under saturating magnetic field. This outcome is in agreement with an increase in atomic volume of Fe with increasing local magnetic moment. Electronic-structure calculations closely reproduce the values for the static atomic displacements in the ferromagnetic state, and predict their dependence on the atomic configuration. They also reveal a strong dependence of the magnetic exchange interactions in Fe-Pt on the atomic configuration state and lattice parameter. In particular, the increase of the Curie temperature in a random state relative to that in the ordered one is demonstrated to be related to the corresponding change of the magnetic exchange interactions due to the different local atomic chemical environment. There exists a similar strong concentration dependence of the chemical interactions as in the case of magnetic exchange interactions. Theoretical effective interactions for Fe-27 at.% Pt alloy are in good agreement with experimental results, and they also reproduce well the L1(2)-A1 transition temperature., QC 20151102

Abstract

The abundance of crystallins (> 80% of the soluble protein) in the ocular lens provides advantageous markers for selective gene expression during cellular differentiation. Here we show by functional and protein-DNA binding experiments that the chicken alpha A-crystallin gene is regulated by at least five control elements located at sites A (-148 to -139), B (-138 to -132), C (-128 to -101), D (-102 to -93), and E (-56 to -41). Factors interacting with these sites were characterized immunologically and by gel mobility shift experiments. The results are interpreted with the following model. Site A binds USF and is part of a composite element with site B. Site B binds CREB and/or CREM to enhance expression in the lens and binds an AP-1 complex including CREB, Fra2 and/or JunD which interacts with USF on site A to repress expression in fibroblasts. Sites C and E (which is conserved across species) bind Pax-6 in the lens to stimulate alpha A-crystallin promoter activity. These experiments provide the first direct data that Pax-6 contributes to the lens-specific expression of a crystallin gene. Site D (-104 to -93) binds USF and is a negative element. Thus, the data indicate that USF, CREB and/or CREM (or AP-1 factors), and Pax-6 bind a complex array of positive and negative cis-acting elements of the chicken alpha A-crystallin gene to control high expression in the lens and repression in fibroblasts.

Abstract

Virtual touchscreen keyboards provide poor text input performance in comparison to physical keyboards, a fact, which can partly be attributed to the weaker tactile feedback, they offer. Users are unable to feel the keys on which their fingers are resting, and usually hover their hands over the keyboard, hitting each key individually. Consequently, users cannot use all ten fingers for typing, which decreases their input speed and causes hand fatigue. We present a keyboard prototype called LiquidKeyboard, which adapts to the userâs natural finger positions on a touchscreen and discuss options to allow for the fingers to rest on the screen while typing. When invoked, the keyboard appears directly under the userâs fingertips and is able to follow finger movements. As the positions of the surrounding keys are fixed in relation to each finger, users can find and touch the keys without tactile feedback. Additionally the user controlled positioning of the keys allows the keyboard to adapt to the physical specification of the userâs hand, such as the size of each finger.

Abstract

This paper reports on a series of interviews with three mainstream and three alternative/complimentary health professionals about the use of interactive technologies as a tool to improve the physical and mental well-being of the elderly. The questions are based around an Analytic Framework for investigating Interactive Technologies and the elderly. Four balance games using the Wii were demonstrated to the interviewees and their opinion of the suitability or otherwise of these games are discussed. The chosen games did not meet with universal approval but did provide us with useful insights on how to ensure the development of appropriate games for the elderly.

16. Improving health outcomes for the elderly an analytic framework

Abstract

The authors present an analytic framework for investigating interactive gaming technologies and integrating a number of such technologies into a remote healthcare monioring system (ReMoteCare) to help improve the quality of life of the elderly, the chronically unwell and infirm whether they are living in their own homes or in aged care facilities. The framework covers population characteristics of the cohort, the interactive technologies as well as economic and environmental factors. It is anticipated that a series of interactive exercises, developed in conjunction with a Feldenkrais movement therapist who specializes in exercises for the elderly, will help to improve the physical and mental health outcomes of this cohort.

17. Interactions and phase transformations in Fe-Pd

Abstract

Interactions in Fe-Pd were studied using diffuse x-ray scattering and first-principles calculations. Diffuse x-ray scattering was performed from single crystals of Fe-38.2 at. % Pd and Fe-81.0 at. % Pd to investigate states of thermal equilibrium at 1023 K and 1073 K, respectively. Short-range-order scattering was separated and effective pair interaction (EPI) parameters were determined using the inverse Monte Carlo method. The EPI parameters are found to strongly vary with respect to data from a previous investigation of Fe-50 at. % Pd. Electronic-structure calculations of effective cluster interaction (ECI) parameters for these states showed the importance of considering multibody interactions and applying the disordered local moment model of the magnetic state: in the ferromagnetic model, the strength of the interactions gets overestimated. Close agreement is reached for short-range order between calculations and the present scattering experiments. Using either a linear compositional variation of the EPI parameters or ECI parameters for alloys with other Pd fractions, the shape of the order-disorder transition line on the Pd-rich side could be reproduced., QC 20140317

Our application prototype has the potential to significantly help serve the future needs of caregivers during an emergency situation through its easy to use, straight forward interface that allows quick and accurate access to vital sign and medical data. 22. Atomic ordering in Au-(42 to 50) at.% Pd : A diffuse scattering and first-principles investigation

Abstract

Atomic ordering in Au-Pd alloys was studied by diffuse x-ray scattering and first-principles methods. Diffuse scattering was done of a single crystal of Au-48 at.% Pd that was aged at 703 K for 24 days. The weakly modulated short-range-order scattering exhibits diffuse maxima with an incommensurate wave vector, which can be related to a Fermi-surface nesting mechanism. From effective pair interaction parameters determined by the inverse Monte Carlo method, a one-dimensional long-period superstructure of the CH structure, LPS1, was found for AuPd. Concurrent electronic-structure calculations of the effective cluster interaction (ECI) parameters indicated the presence of another closely related superstructure, LPS2, at 0 K. At the same time, direct first-principles calculations of the total energies of the CH structure and further one-dimensional long-period superstructures predicted the stabilization of LPS4. Although the energy differences between these structures are small and a complex behavior of the effective interactions is expected due to the Fermi-surface nesting, experimental data and theoretical results both support the stabilization of a long-period superstructure of the CH structure for AuPd at 0 K. The ECI parameters determined by the screened generalized perturbation method also predicted a ground-state structure different from Au(7)Pd(5), previously obtained from cluster expansion calculations. 47. Challenges to a legacy: retaining CORE accreditation of rehabilitation counselor education programs.

Abstract

Currently the Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE) is exploring merger opportunities with the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). Because there has been no systematic involvement of CORE constituents in discussions related to merger, it is important to review the reasons CORE was established, previous attempts at merger, and misrepresentations of the role of licensure and accreditation. Reasons (e.g., emphasize the identity of rehabilitation counsel-ors, maintain autonomy of the rehabilitation counseling profession, promote advocacy and partnerships with individuals with disabilities, develop opportunities for accreditation of undergraduate and doctoral rehabilitation programs) for retaining the CORE as a separate accrediting body for Rehabilitation Counselor Education Programs are discussed. Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To validate an assistive technology (AT) baseline and outcomes measure and to quantify the measure's value in determining the best match of consumer and AT considering consumer ratings of their subjective quality of life, mood, support from others, motivation for AT use, program/therapist reliance, and self-determination/self-esteem. DESIGN: Prospective multi-cohort study. SETTING: Vocational rehabilitation offices and community. PARTICIPANTS: Over 150 vocational rehabilitation counselors in 25 U.S. states with one consumer each receiving new AT. INTERVENTIONS: Counselor training in the Matching Person and Technology (MPT) Model and consumer completion of the MPT measure, Assistive Technology Device Predisposition Assessment (ATD PA). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Total and subscale scores on the ATD PA as well as counselor-completed questionnaires. RESULTS: ATD PA items differentiated consumer predispositions to AT use as well as AT and user match. There were no significant differences due to gender, physical locality, or age within this sample of working-age adult consumers. Vocational rehabilitation counselors exposed to training in the MPT Model achieved enhanced AT service delivery outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: The ATD PA is a valid measure of predisposition to use an AT and the subsequent match of AT and user. Rehabilitation practitioners who use the ATD PA will achieve evidence-based practice and can expect to see enhanced AT service delivery outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

49. The cellular basis of corneal transparency: evidence for 'corneal crystallins'.

Abstract

In vivo corneal light scattering measurements using a novel confocal microscope demonstrated greatly increased backscatter from corneal stromal fibrocytes (keratocytes) in opaque compared to transparent corneal tissue in both humans and rabbits. Additionally, two water-soluble proteins, transketolase (TKT) and aldehyde dehydrogenase class 1 (ALDH1), isolated from rabbit keratocytes showed unexpectedly abundant expression ( approximately 30% of the soluble protein) in transparent corneas and markedly reduced levels in opaque scleral fibroblasts or keratocytes from hazy, freeze injured regions of the cornea. Together these data suggest that the relatively high expressions of TKT and ALDH1 contribute to corneal transparency in the rabbit at the cellular level, reminiscent of enzyme-crystallins in the lens. We also note that ALDH1 accumulates in the rabbit corneal epithelial cells, rather than ALDH3 as seen in other mammals, consistent with the taxon-specificity observed among lens enzyme-crystallins. Our results suggest that corneal cells, like lens cells, may preferentially express water-soluble proteins, often enzymes, for controlling their optical properties.

Abstract

The lens-preferred mouse alphaA-crystallin gene contains a conserved stretch (proximal element 2, +24/+43) in its 5'-noncoding region that we have previously shown binds nuclear proteins of lens and non-lens cells. The 5'-half of this sequence (PE2A, +25/+32) has consensus binding sites for AP-1 and other transcription factors. We show here by deletion experiments that PE2A is important for activity of the mouse alphaA-crystallin promoter and mediates phorbol ester and c-Jun responsiveness of this promoter in transfected lens cells. In vitro protein binding studies suggest that AP-1 complexes are capable of binding to PE2A. Our findings suggest that PE2A plays a role in mouse alphaA-crystallin gene expression through AP-1-mediated regulatory mechanisms. We propose that the mouse and chicken alphaA-crystallin genes are expressed with lens specificity using a similar assortment of transcription factors but with a different physical arrangement of their respective cis-elements within the promoter region. A fundamental role for AP-1 in lens-preferred expression of crystallin genes is consistent with the idea that a redox-sensitive mechanism is a selective force for recruiting lens crystallins.
