"Altmetrics"is an alternative metric that quantifies the public engagement of research articles on social media and news platforms. This study aims to analyze articles with the highest altmetric attention score (AAS) related to dental implants and assess their association with citation counts and other publication characteristics Altmetric explorer was used to identify the articles with the highest 100 altmetric scores. 116 articles were selected and analyzed using descriptive and correlational statistics. A total of 4447 articles were identified. Topics were mostly discussed on Twitter, news outlets, and Mendeley. The top 116 articles that generated the highest online attention discussed mainly topics related to risk factors of implant survival (n=25) and implant design and material (n=17). The article with the highest AAS (501) was an observational study published in 2016 in the journal of oral implantology regarding the use of ringbone allograft to restore atrophic implant site. Regarding the first author's country and affiliation, more than half were from Europe and more than 80% were university-affiliated.; journals with a social media account did not have significantly higher Altmetric scores for their articles compared to those without an account. Similarly, we found no difference between open access and closed access journals in AAS. No significant correlation between articles' AASs and their citation counts on Scopus (r = -0.083, P= 0.38), Dimensions (r = -0.084, P = 0.37), and Google Scholar (r = -0.087, P = 0.36). Aims or Objectives: The Syrian crisis has resulted in a significant impact on refugee oral health status, but the scientific literature lacks information characterizing the pattern of tooth extraction in refugees. Materials and Methods: The current study analyzed the pattern of tooth extraction and the associated sociodemographic factors among 626 (53.4% females, 46.6% males) Syrian refugees who were treated in dental clinics in the Zaatari camp. All adult Syrian refugees attending the dental unit at Zaatari camp were eligible to participate. Clinical and sociodemographic data were collected from the study sample using a validated semi‐structured survey over a period of 4 months. Descriptive statistics were generated and Chi‐square test, independent sample t‐test, ANOVA test and Bonferroni Post Hoc test were used to examine associations between the different variables. Results: More than one third of the attendees (33.9%) were young adults (18–29 years), and nearly two thirds (69.8%) had no or very basic education. The mean number of teeth that needed extraction was (1.46 ± 0.84) and was significantly higher in males, smokers, older patients, and those with no or basic education. The most common cause for tooth extraction was dental caries (54.8%), followed by tooth fracture/un‐restorability (38.5%), and periodontitis (3.4%); while the least common reason was tooth extraction for orthodontic treatment (0.20%). Conclusions: Dental caries and its sequelae were the leading cause of tooth extraction in this refugee population. Molar teeth were found to be the most frequently extracted and lower anteriors were the least. Older age, smoking, patients with lower educational level, poor oral hygiene and male gender all predispose to a higher incidence of tooth extractions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background In oral implantology, there is no consensus on the most appropriate regimen for antibiotics prescribing, the decision to prescribe antibiotic is usually based on procedure, patient and clinician related factors. The aim of this study was to investigate the rationale of antibiotic prescribing among Jordanian clinicians who practice oral implantology. Findings The target sample for the study was the 250 Jordan Dental Implant Group members. A five page questionnaire contained 41 questions, both closed and open questions were used to collect data. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS Windows 16.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). Descriptive statistics were generated. The response rate was (70.4%) 176/250. Mean age was 37.2 yrs, 49.4% always prescribe antibiotics mainly oral amoxicillin and amoxicillin with clavulinic acid. Antibiotics prescribing increased with flap raising, multiple implants and sinus or bone augmentation. Patient medical condition, periodontitis and oral hygiene were the most important clinical factors in antibiotic prescribing, non-clinical factors were; reading scientific materials, courses and lectures, knowledge gained during training, and the effectiveness and previous experience with the drug. Conclusions Wide variations in antibiotics types, routes, dose and duration of administration were found. Recommendations on antibiotic prescribing are needed to prevent antibiotic overprescribing and misuse.

Abstract Background The present study aimed to address the suspected deficiency in the level of understanding of HIV/AIDS among clinical and pre clinical dental students at the University of Jordan. In this cross-sectional study, structured questionnaires were distributed to fifth year dental students (n = 121) and to third year dental students (n = 144) in the academic year 2008/2009. Findings Significantly higher percentage of fifth-year students compared to third-year students felt that the teaching they received on cross-infection precautions and barrier dentistry was adequate (P < 0.001). Majority (84.2%) of fifth-year students were aware that individual carrying anti-HIV antibodies to be an HIV carrier, only 57.7% of third-year students were aware of this fact (P < 0.001). Majority recognized the association between Kaposi sarcoma, oral candidiasis and hairy leukoplakia with HIV/AIDS but knowledge of the association between HIV/AIDS with less frequent lesions was inadequate. Significantly higher proportion of third-year students compared to fifth-year (39.2% vs. 26.3%) thought that HIV patients should be referred to other centers or support groups for treatment (P = 0.04). Conclusions The level of knowledge of Jordanian dental students about HIV and AIDS was generally acceptable; there were inadequacies, however, in their understanding regarding some aspects of AIDS epidemic which demands that dental school curriculum needs some improvement.

Purpose: To compare the efficacy of three different antibiotic regimens in reducing early dental implant failure. Materials and methods: In a controlled clinical trial, 270 consecutively treated patients were allocated to three antibiotic groups, alternatively, according to order of participation in the trial: Group A (2 g amoxicillin single preoperative dose), Group B (single preoperative 2 g amoxicillin followed by 500 mg three times daily for 5 days) and Group C (postoperative amoxicillin with clavulanic acid 625 mg three times daily for 5 days). Outcomes were pain, wound infection, dehiscence, adverse events possibly related to antibiotics and early implant failure. The patients were followed postoperatively at 1 week, 1 month and at the beginning of the prosthetic stage. Chi-square test and ANOVA test were used to examine differences. Results: In total, 240 patients were adherent to the trial protocol: Group A, 73 patients (210 implants); Group B, 79 patients (266 implants); and Group C, 88 patients (290 implants). Patients experiencing early implant failure: 12 in Group A (16.4%), 11 in Group B (13.9%) and 13 in Group C (14.8%). No statistically significant differences were observed for any of the outcome measures between the three groups. Conclusions: It may not be necessary to provide postoperative antibiotics in patients undergoing dental implant placement, however, these preliminary findings need to be confirmed by large multicentre clinical trials.
