10. Exploring the Potential of Cold Sintering for Proton-Conducting Ceramics: A Review.

Abstract

Proton-conducting ceramic materials have emerged as effective candidates for improving the performance of solid oxide cells (SOCs) and electrolyzers (SOEs) at intermediate temperatures. BaCeO3 and BaZrO3 perovskites doped with rare-earth elements such as Y2O3 (BCZY) are well known for their high proton conductivity, low operating temperature, and chemical stability, which lead to SOCs' improved performance. However, the high sintering temperature and extended processing time needed to obtain dense BCZY-type electrolytes (typically > 1350 °C) to be used as SOC electrolytes can cause severe barium evaporation, altering the stoichiometry of the system and consequently reducing the performance of the final device. The cold sintering process (CSP) is a novel sintering technique that allows a drastic reduction in the sintering temperature needed to obtain dense ceramics. Using the CSP, materials can be sintered in a short time using an appropriate amount of a liquid phase at temperatures < 300 °C under a few hundred MPa of uniaxial pressure. For these reasons, cold sintering is considered one of the most promising ways to obtain ceramic proton conductors in mild conditions. This review aims to collect novel insights into the application of the CSP with a focus on BCZY-type materials, highlighting the opportunities and challenges and giving a vision of future trends and perspectives. Abstract

The "on‐demand" capture and utilization of CO2 is effectively realized with a readily accessible dual function organic composite. The covalent and controlled derivatization of graphene oxide (GO) surface with naturally occurring arginine led to a "smart" material capable of capturing (chemisorption) CO2 from high‐purity flue‐gas as well as low‐concentration streams (i. e. direct air capture) and concomitant chemical activation toward the incorporation into cyclic carbonates. The overall integrated CO2 capture and conversion (ICCC) strategy has been fully elucidated mechanistically via dedicated computational, spectroscopic and thermal analyses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Bismuth compounds are considered the most suitable alternatives to lead-based systems for ferroelectric and piezoelectric applications. Nevertheless little has been done to systematically study the relationships that link the two main classes of ferroelectric bismuth compounds: perovskite and bismuth layer compounds (Aurivillius compounds). The knowledge of these relationships could be a key to improve the performances of the bismuth compounds and could help to better tailor their properties for specific applications. The objective of this project was twofold: 1. To understand the structural and electrical relationships between perovskite and Aurivillius compounds within the Na^Bi^TiO^-Bi^Ti^O^-BaTiCb (NBT-BIT-BT) system; 2. To explore the possibility of obtaining a new perovskite of formula Bi2MgTiOô. A study of 83 different compositions allowed us to sketch the possible phase diagram of the NBT-BIT-BT system. XRD structural characterisation highlighted the importance of low angle analysis in the study of layered compounds. The presence of monophasic regions in the phase diagram stressed the flexibility of this class of compounds that are able to withstand high percentage of vacancies before collapsing. It was shown that, after taking into account some electronic considerations, a simple geometrical model can be use as "rule of thumb" to predict the stability of Aurivillius compounds. New unreported compounds were found in the system and a mechanism for the formation of the Aurivillius compounds is proposed. The dielectric and piezoelectric properties were linked to the fundamental layered structure of the Aurivillius phases showing that all these properties depend on the number of perovskite blocks present. The higher the number of perovskite blocks, higher the values of resistivity and relative permittivity.

Abstract

Ceramic membranes operating at high-temperatures are a key-technology for hydrogen separation processes. Cer-cer composites based on BaCe0.65Zr0.20Y0.15O3-d-Gd0.2Ce0.8O2-d have gained increasing attention as asymmetric membranes for H2 purification, for their high proton-electron conductivity, 100% selectivity, temperature and chemical stability, and intrinsic lower costs compared with the Pd–based technologies. Here, BCZY-GDC composite parts were successfully fabricated for the first time by microextrusion. Water-based pastes with different solid loadings and suitable rheological properties were formulated and printed in single or multilayer structures without nozzle clogging. After deposition, the samples were osmotically dried in concentrated PEG solutions in order to obtain cracks-free green bodies. The further process optimization allowed the production of planar BCZY-GDC ceramics to be potentially applied in asymmetric membrane structures. 45. Chemical and mechanical stability of BCZY-GDC membranes for hydrogen separation

Abstract

This work investigates, for the first time, the hydrogen permeation of BaCeZrYO-CeGdO (BCZY-GDC) asymmetric membranes for 100 h, using wet 15% CO in Ar as sweep gas. In the same frame, ex-situ aging tests were performed for 100 h exposure at 750 °C in different atmospheres (H, CO, H + CO), to evaluate the phase, microstructure, and mechanical long-term stability of this system. The thermal aging in H-atmosphere leads to lower flexural strength caused by a microstructure embrittlement of the BCZY-GDC asymmetric membrane, due to chemical expansion/contraction of the GDC cell after the aging cycle. Indeed, micro-cracking of GDC grains, that decreases the composite hardness, is observed in symmetric (pressed pellet) membranes. The aging in CO causes a slightly increase in flexural strength values due to the formation of sub-micrometric Zr-doped ceria-BaCO phases at the expense of the perovskite. Higher hardness values related to the emerging of BaCO islands on the symmetric membrane surface were also recorded. In H + CO atmosphere (real testing condition), the membrane shows a slight decrease in flexural strength and hardness while no evident morphological or structural changes (except the BaCO formation in traces) were observed. This study highlights that promising and stable hydrogen permeation flux values can be recorded using the asymmetric configuration for 100 h, using wet 15% CO in Ar as sweep gas. Neither structural nor morphological modification of the membrane were detected after the testing.
