The design and optimization of laser-Compton x-ray systems based on compact distributed charge accelerator structures can enable micron-scale imaging of disease and the concomitant production of beams of Very High Energy Electrons (VHEEs) capable of producing FLASH-relevant dose rates. The physics of laser-Compton x-ray scattering ensures that the scattered x-rays follow exactly the trajectory of the incident electrons, thus providing a route to image-guided, VHEE FLASH radiotherapy. The keys to a compact architecture capable of producing both laser-Compton x-rays and VHEEs are the use of X-band RF accelerator structures which have been demonstrated to operate with over 100 MeV/m acceleration gradients. The operation of these structures in a distributed charge mode in which each radiofrequency (RF) cycle of the drive RF pulse is filled with a low-charge, high-brightness electron bunch is enabled by the illumination of a high-brightness photogun with a train of UV laser pulses synchronized to the frequency of the underlying accelerator system. The UV pulse trains are created by a patented pulse synthesis approach which utilizes the RF clock of the accelerator to phase and amplitude modulate a narrow band continuous wave (CW) seed laser. In this way it is possible to produce up to 10 {\mu}A of average beam current from the accelerator. Such high current from a compact accelerator enables production of sufficient x-rays via laser-Compton scattering for clinical imaging and does so from a machine of "clinical" footprint. At the same time, the production of 1000 or greater individual micro-bunches per RF pulse enables > 10 nC of charge to be produced in a macrobunch of < 100 ns. The main contribution of this paper is a six-step semi-automatic algorithm that obtains a recursion satisfied by a family of determinants by systematically and iteratively applying Laplace expansion to the underlying matrix family. The recursion allows explicit computation of the Binet form providing a closed formula for resistance distance between two specified nodes in a family of graphs. This approach is particularly suited for graph families with complex structures; the method is used to prove the 1 over 14 conjectured asymptotic formula for linear 3--trees. Additionally, although the literature on recursive formulas for resistance distances is quite large, the Fibonacci Quarterly and the Proceedings have almost no such results despite the fact that many recursions related to resistance distances involve the Fibonacci numbers. Recent band structure calculations have suggested the potential for band tuning in a chiral semiconductor, Ag$_3$AuTe$_2$, to zero upon application of negative strain. In this study, we report on the synthesis of polycrystalline Ag$_3$AuTe$_2$ and investigate its transport, optical properties, and pressure compatibility. Transport measurements reveal the semiconducting behavior of Ag$_3$AuTe$_2$ with high resistivity and an activation energy $E_a$ of 0.2 eV. The optical band gap determined by diffuse reflectance measurements is about three times wider than the experimental $E_a$. Despite the difference, both experimental gaps fall within the range of predicted band gaps by our first-principles DFT calculations employing the PBE and mBJ methods. Furthermore, our DFT simulations predict a progressive narrowing of the band gap under compressive strain, with a full closure expected at a strain of -4% relative to the lattice parameter. To evaluate the feasibility of gap tunability at such substantial strain, the high-pressure behavior of Ag$_3$AuTe$_2$ was investigated by $in$ $situ$ high-pressure X-ray diffraction up to 47 GPa. Mechanical compression beyond 4% resulted in a pressure-induced structural transformation, indicating the possibilities of substantial gap modulation under extreme compression conditions.

We introduce phi-3-mini, a 3.8 billion parameter language model trained on 3.3 trillion tokens, whose overall performance, as measured by both academic benchmarks and internal testing, rivals that of models such as Mixtral 8x7B and GPT-3.5 (e.g., phi-3-mini achieves 69% on MMLU and 8.38 on MT-bench), despite being small enough to be deployed on a phone. Our training dataset is a scaled-up version of the one used for phi-2, composed of heavily filtered publicly available web data and synthetic data. The model is also further aligned for robustness, safety, and chat format. We also provide parameter-scaling results with a 7B, 14B models trained for 4.8T tokens, called phi-3-small, phi-3-medium, both significantly more capable than phi-3-mini (e.g., respectively 75%, 78% on MMLU, and 8.7, 8.9 on MT-bench). To enhance multilingual, multimodal, and long-context capabilities, we introduce three models in the phi-3.5 series: phi-3.5-mini, phi-3.5-MoE, and phi-3.5-Vision. The phi-3.5-MoE, a 16 x 3.8B MoE model with 6.6 billion active parameters, achieves superior performance in language reasoning, math, and code tasks compared to other open-source models of similar scale, such as Llama 3.1 and the Mixtral series, and on par with Gemini-1.5-Flash and GPT-4o-mini. Meanwhile, phi-3.5-Vision, a 4.2 billion parameter model derived from phi-3.5-mini, excels in reasoning tasks and is adept at handling both single-image and text prompts, as well as multi-image and text prompts., Comment: 24 pages

Recent reports of superconductivity in the vicinity of room temperature have been the subject of discussion by the community. Specifically, features in the resistance-temperature (R-T) relations have raised questions. We show that many of these features can arise from previously unaccounted-for dynamic effects associated with the AC transport techniques often used in high-pressure experiments. These dynamic AC effects can can cause the apparent resistance (Rapparent) to diverge from the DC resistance (RDC), sharpen measured superconducting transitions, and produce other features in the measured R-T response. We also show that utilizing the full output of phase-sensitive transport measurements provides a valuable probe of superconducting samples in difficult to measure systems, Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

While hydrogen-rich materials have been demonstrated to exhibit high T$_c$ superconductivity at high pressures, there is an ongoing search for ternary and quaternary hydrides that achieve such high critical temperatures at much lower pressures. First-principles searches are impeded by the computational complexity of solving the Eliashberg equations for large, complex crystal structures. Here, we adopt a simplified approach using electronic indicators previously established to be correlated with superconductivity in hydrides. This is used to study complex hydride structures, which are predicted to exhibit promisingly high critical temperatures for superconductivity. In particular, we propose three classes of hydrides inspired by the FCC RH$_3$ structures that exhibit strong hydrogen network connectivity, as defined through the electron localization function. The first class [RH$_{11}$X$_3$Y] is based on a Pm$\overline{3}$m structure showing moderately high T$_c$, where the T$_c$ estimate from electronic properties is compared with direct Eliashberg calculations and found to be surprisingly accurate. The second class of structures [(RH$_{11}$)$_2$X$_6$YZ] improves on this with promisingly high density of states with dominant hydrogen character at the Fermi energy, typically enhancing T$_c$. The third class [(R$^1$H$_{11}$)(R$^2$H$_{11}$)X$_6$YZ] improves the strong hydrogen network connectivity by introducing anisotropy in the hydrogen network through a specific doping pattern. We explore electronic and structural properties of Fm$\overline{3}$m Lu-H-N structures with specific N,H ordering as plausible candidates for near-ambient superconductivity possibly originating from their remarkably narrow hydrogen-based bands at the Fermi level. Although LuH$_{2.875}$N$_{0.125}$ exhibits an instability persisting up to 17 GPa, it is anharmonically stable near ambient pressure when accounting for quantum nuclear effects. The presence of flat bands near $E_\text{F}$ is understood to arise from destructive\ quantum interference between N-p and surrounding H-s orbitals, with certain types of defects leaving the flat bands unaffected. The results suggest there is an optimal pressure near ambient where the superconducting $T_{\text{c}}$ is maximized in this structure by anharmonically-stabilized low-frequency and non-adiabatically coupled high-frequency hydrogen modes. Despite the metastability of this structure, its electronic properties and dynamical stability when calculated beyond a classical harmonic approach can explain the reported near-ambient superconductivity in Lu-H-N., Comment: Added significant supplemental information since previous version, revised main figures and text. High pressure x-ray diffraction up to 30 GPa and resonant emission x-ray spectroscopy and partial fluorescence yield x-ray absorption spectroscopy up to 52 GPa were used to study how the structural and electronic properties of UTe$_2$ evolve with pressure at room temperature. An orthorhombic to tetragonal phase transition was observed to occur between 5 and 7 GPa, with a large volume collapse of nearly 11% and a nearest U-U distance increase by about 4%. This lower to higher symmetry transition suggests less 5f electron participation in bonding when the weakly correlated superconducting phase in the tetragonal structure of UTe$_2$ appears. Beyond 7 GPa, no new structural transitions were found up to 30 GPa. The resonant x-ray emission spectra clearly demonstrate an intermediate valence of U, nearly +3.74 at 1.8 GPa and room temperature, and reveal that the U valence shifts towards 4+, passes through a peak at 2.8 GPa, and then decreases towards 3+ and settles down to a nearly constant value above 15 GPa. These experiments reveal that some fundamental structural and valence changes occur in UTe2 at relatively low pressures, which could be responsible for the interplay between unconventional superconductivity, magnetic ordering, and weakly correlated superconductivity that is manifested in the temperature-pressure phase diagram of UTe2., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures, 1 table

The Axion Dark Matter eXperiment (ADMX) has previously excluded Dine-Fischler-Srednicki-Zhitnisky (DFSZ) axions between 680-790 MHz under the assumption that the dark matter is described by the isothermal halo model. However, the precise nature of the velocity distribution of dark matter is still unknown, and alternative models have been proposed. We report the results of a non-virialized axion search over the mass range 2.81-3.31 {\mu}eV, corresponding to the frequency range 680-800 MHz. This analysis marks the most sensitive search for non-virialized axions sensitive to Doppler effects in the Milky Way Halo to date. Accounting for frequency shifts due to the detector's motion through the Galaxy, we exclude cold flow relic axions with a velocity dispersion of order 10^-7 c with 95% confidence.

We study ferroelectricity in the classic perovskite ferroelectric PbTiO$_3$ to high pressures with density functional theory (DFT) and experimental diamond-anvil techniques. We use second harmonic generation (SHG) spectroscopy to detect lack of inversion symmetry, if present. Consistent with early understanding and experiments, we find that ferroelectricity disappears at moderate pressures. However, the DFT calculations show that the disappearance arises from the overtaking of zone boundary instabilities, and not from the squeezing out of the off-centering ferroelectric displacements with pressure, as previously thought. We find a new dense centrosymmetric post-perovskite phase with P$2_1/m$ symmetry that becomes stable at about 70 GPa. Our computations predict a dramatic reentrance of ferroelectricity 90 GPa in the distorted R3c structure, but this phase is metastable relative to the post-perovskite phase.

An overview is presented of a general theory of statistical inference that is referred to as the fiducial-Bayes fusion. This theory combines organic fiducial inference and Bayesian inference. The aim is that the reader is given a clear summary of the conceptual framework of the fiducial-Bayes fusion as well as pointers to further reading about its more technical aspects. Particular attention is paid to the issue of how much importance should be attached to the role of Bayesian inference within this framework. The $\Lambda$CDM paradigm successfully explains the large-scale structure of the Universe, but is less well constrained on sub-galactic scales. Gravitational lens modelling has been used to measure the imprints of dark substructures on lensed arcs, testing the small-scale predictions of $\Lambda$CDM. However, the methods required for these tests are subject to degeneracies among the lens mass model and the source light profile. We present a case study of the unique compound gravitational lens SDSSJ0946+1006, wherein a dark, massive substructure has been detected, whose reported high concentration would be unlikely in a $\Lambda$CDM universe. For the first time, we model the first two background sources in both I- and U-band HST imaging, as well as VLT-MUSE emission line data for the most distant source. We recover a lensing perturber at a $5.9\sigma$ confidence level with mass $\log_{10}(M_\mathrm{sub}/M_{\odot})=9.2^{+0.4}_{-0.1}$ and concentration $\log_{10}c=2.4^{+0.5}_{-0.3}$. The concentration is more consistent with CDM subhalos than previously reported, and the mass is compatible with that of a dwarf satellite galaxy whose flux is undetectable in the data at the location of the perturber. A wandering black hole with mass $\log_{10}(M_\mathrm{BH}/M_{\odot})=8.9^{+0.2}_{-0.1}$ is a viable alternative model. We systematically investigate alternative assumptions about the complexity of the mass distribution and source reconstruction; in all cases the subhalo is detected at around the $\geq5\sigma$ level. Serendipity plays an important role in scientific discovery. Indeed, many of the most important breakthroughs, ranging from penicillin to the electric battery, have been made by scientists who were stimulated by a chance exposure to unsought but useful information. However, not all scientists are equally likely to benefit from such serendipitous exposure. Although scholars generally agree that scientists with a prepared mind are most likely to benefit from serendipitous encounters, there is much less consensus over what precisely constitutes a prepared mind, with some research suggesting the importance of openness and others emphasizing the need for deep prior experience in a particular domain. In this paper, we empirically investigate the role of serendipity in science by leveraging a policy change that exogenously shifted the shelving location of journals in university libraries and subsequently exposed scientists to unsought scientific information. Using large-scale data on 2.4 million papers published in 9,750 journals by 520,000 scientists at 115 North American research universities, we find that scientists with greater openness are more likely to benefit from serendipitous encounters. Following the policy change, these scientists tended to cite less familiar and newer work, and ultimately published papers that were more innovative. By contrast, we find little effect on innovativeness for scientists with greater depth of experience, who, in our sample, tended to cite more familiar and older work following the policy change.

The recent report of superconductivity in nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride at near-ambient pressures and temperatures has attracted great attention but also continuing controversy. Several experimental groups have reported no observation of superconductivity at these conditions in Lu-N-H samples they have prepared. To address this issue, we have carried out a series of studies of phases in the Lu-N-H system using a variety of techniques. We report here electrical resistance measurements on a Lu-N-H sample that are in very good agreement with both previously reported Tc and its pressure dependence in the vicinity of room temperature for nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

This paper outlines the centralised design and production of the Ultra-High-Vacuum sidearm and Laser-Stabilisation systems for the AION Ultra-Cold Strontium Laboratories. Commissioning data on the residual gas and steady-state pressures in the sidearm chambers, on magnetic field quality, on laser stabilisation, and on the loading rate for the 3D Magneto-Optical Trap are presented. Streamlining the design and production of the sidearm and laser stabilisation systems enabled the AION Collaboration to build and equip in parallel five state-of-the-art Ultra-Cold Strontium Laboratories within 24 months by leveraging key expertise in the collaboration. This approach could serve as a model for the development and construction of other cold atom experiments, such as atomic clock experiments and neutral atom quantum computing systems, by establishing dedicated design and production units at national laboratories., Comment: 27 pages, 21 figures

First-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations of Lu-H-N compounds reveal low-energy configurations of Fm$\overline{3}$m Lu$_{8}$H$_{23-x}$N structures that exhibit novel electronic properties such as flat bands, sharply peaked densities of states (van Hove singularities, vHs), and intersecting Dirac cones near the Fermi energy (E$_F$). These N-doped LuH$_3$-based structures also exhibit an interconnected metallic hydrogen network, which is a common feature of high-T$_c$ hydride superconductors. Electronic property systematics give estimates of T$_c$ for optimally ordered structures that are well above the critical temperatures predicted for structures considered previously. The vHs and flat bands near E$_F$ are enhanced in DFT+U calculations, implying strong correlation physics should also be considered for first-principles studies of these materials. The 2022 Fibonacci Conference held in Sarajevo introduced the Circuit Array, a two-dimensional array associated with the resistance labels of electrical circuits whose underlying graph when embedded in the Cartesian plane has the form of a triangular n-grid. The presentation used row reduction, a computational method alternative to the traditional method using the Laplacian. The presentation explored reconsidering the Circuit Array in terms of polynomials instead of numbers as a means to facilitate finding patterns. The present paper shows the fruitfulness of this approach. The main result of the current paper states that the characteristic polynomials corresponding to the recursions of single or multi-variable polynomial formulations of the Circuit Array exclusively have powers of 9 as roots. Supermassive black holes (SMBHs) are a key catalyst of galaxy formation and evolution, leading to an observed correlation between SMBH mass $M_{\rm BH}$ and host galaxy velocity dispersion $\sigma_{\rm e}$. Outside the local Universe, measurements of $M_{\rm BH}$ are usually only possible for SMBHs in an active state: limiting sample size and introducing selection biases. Gravitational lensing makes it possible to measure the mass of non-active SMBHs. We present models of the $z=0.169$ galaxy-scale strong lens Abell~1201. A cD galaxy in a galaxy cluster, it has sufficient `external shear' that a magnified image of a $z = 0.451$ background galaxy is projected just $\sim 1$ kpc from the galaxy centre. Using multi-band Hubble Space Telescope imaging and the lens modeling software $\texttt{PyAutoLens}$ we reconstruct the distribution of mass along this line of sight. Bayesian model comparison favours a point mass with $M_{\rm BH} = 3.27 \pm 2.12\times10^{10}\,$M$_{\rm \odot}$ (3$\sigma$ confidence limit); an ultramassive black hole. One model gives a comparable Bayesian evidence without a SMBH, however we argue this model is nonphysical given its base assumptions. This model still provides an upper limit of $M_{\rm BH} \leq 5.3 \times 10^{10}\,$M$_{\rm \odot}$, because a SMBH above this mass deforms the lensed image $\sim 1$ kpc from Abell 1201's centre. This builds on previous work using central images to place upper limits on $M_{\rm BH}$, but is the first to also place a lower limit and without a central image being observed. The success of this method suggests that surveys during the next decade could measure thousands more SMBH masses, and any redshift evolution of the $M_{\rm BH}$--$\sigma_{\rm e}$ relation. The phenomenon of high temperature superconductivity, approaching room temperature, has been realized in a number of hydrogen-dominant alloy systems under high pressure conditions1-12. A significant discovery in reaching room temperature superconductivity is the photo-induced reaction of sulfur, hydrogen, and carbon that initially forms of van der Waals solids at sub-megabar pressures. Carbonaceous sulfur hydride has been demonstrated to be tunable with respect to carbon content, leading to different superconducting final states with different structural symmetries. A modulated AC susceptibility technique adapted for a diamond anvil cell confirms a Tc of 260 kelvin at 133 GPa in carbonaceous sulfur hydride. Furthermore, direct synchrotron infrared reflectivity measurements on the same sample under the same conditions reveal a superconducting gap of ~85 meV at 100 K in close agreement to the expected value from Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory13-18. Additionally, x-ray diffraction in tandem with AC magnetic susceptibility measurements above and below the superconducting transition temperature, and as a function of pressure at 107-133 GPa, reveal the Pnma structure of the material is responsible for the close to room-temperature superconductivity at these pressures.
