6. Advancing Social Justice Learning through Data Literacy

Students need "critical data literacy" skills to help make sense of the multitude of information available to them, especially as it relates to high-stakes issues of social justice. The authors describe two curriculum modules they developed--one on income equality, one on immigration--that help students learn to analyze data in order to shed light on complex social issues and evaluate claims about those issues.

9. Building toward Critical Data Literacy with Investigations of Income Inequality

Abstract

To promote understanding of and interest in working with data among diverse student populations, we developed and studied a high school mathematics curriculum module that examines income inequality in the United States. Designed as a multi-week set of applied data investigations, the module supports student analyses of income inequality using U.S. Census Bureau microdata and the online data analysis tool the Common Online Data Analysis Platform (CODAP). Pre- and post-module data show that use of this module was associated with statistically significant growth in students' understanding of fundamental data concepts and individual interests in statistics and data analysis, with small to moderate effect sizes. Student survey responses and interview data from students and teachers suggest that the topic of income inequality, features within CODAP, the use of person-level data, and opportunities to engage in multivariable thinking helped to support critical data literacy and its foundations among participating students. We describe our definitions of data literacy and critical data literacy and discuss curriculum strategies to develop them.

15. Assessing the association between pre-course metrics of student preparation and student performance in introductory statistics: Results from early data on simulation-based inference vs. nonsimulation based inference

Abstract

The recent simulation-based inference (SBI) movement in algebra-based introductory statistics courses (Stat 101) has provided preliminary evidence of improved student conceptual understanding and retention. However, little is known about whether these positive effects are preferentially distributed across types of students entering the course. We consider how two metrics of Stat 101 student preparation (pre-course performance on concept inventory and math ACT score) may or may not be associated with end of course student performance on conceptual inventories. Students across all preparation levels tended to show improvement in Stat 101, but more improvement was observed across all student preparation levels in early versions of a SBI course. Furthermore, students' gains tended to be similar regardless of whether students entered the course with more preparation or less. Recent data on a sample of students using a current version of an SBI course showed similar results, though direct comparison with non-SBI students was not possible. Overall, our analysis provides additional evidence that SBI curricula are effective at improving students' conceptual understanding of statistical ideas post-course regardless student preparation. Abstract

BackgroundThere are more than two million people living with HIV (PLH) in India, with more than 30% on antiretroviral treatment (ART) estimated to be non-adherent. This study aimed to (I) document adherence rates and related factors among ART patients in a large ART clinic in India, and (II) pilot test daily and weekly interactive voice response (IVR) calls to improve ART adherence and related outcomes.MethodsART patients reporting missing at least one dose in prior 6 months (N=362) were enrolled and assessed via self-report and medical record review. Participants were randomized to one of two conditions: (I) twice-daily IVR call reminders with self-management support messaging, plus a weekly IVR adherence assessment; or (II) an attention control, with only weekly IVR adherence assessment. Participants completed study assessments at baseline, 2-, 4-, and 6-months with high retention (88% to 96%).ResultsIntention-to-treat analyses found limited support for intervention effects for improving or maintaining ART adherence or CD4 counts between the two study arms over 6-months follow-up. Adherence increased significantly in the six months prior to baseline from about 65% to >95% with perfect adherence based on pill counts from medical records and consistent with patient self-report measures, which presented ceiling effects for detecting improvements in ART adherence in response to IVR intervention exposure. There was also limited support for intervention effects on secondary, self-management outcomes.ConclusionsHigh levels of adherence were sustained throughout the 6-month RCT. IVR regulation changes in India delayed study launch for 6 months, which likely allowed mobilization of improved adherence at the clinic, provider and patient levels in anticipation of the study launch. Therefore, ceiling effects limited inferences on intervention effects to improve adherence. Results suggest that clinic-level adherence monitoring may be sufficient to mobilize adherence improvements by providers and patients.Trial registrationClinicalTrials.gov registration #NCT02118454.

Abstract

"Simulation-based inference" is often considered a pedagogical strategy for helping students develop inferential reasoning, for example, giving them a visual and concrete reference for deciding whether the observed statistic is unlikely to happen by chance alone when the null hypothesis is true. In this article, we highlight for teachers some implications of different simulation strategies when analyzing two variables. In particular, does it matter whether the simulation models random sampling or random assignment? We present examples from comparing two means and simple linear regression, highlighting the impact on the standard deviation of the null distribution. Abstract

People living with HIV/AIDS (PLH) experience high rates of depression and related psychosocial risk factors that vary by gender. This study examines gender differences in depression severity among antiretroviral therapy (ART) patients (n = 362) from a large government ART clinic in Kolkata, India. Hypotheses for multiple linear regression models were guided by an integrated gendered stress process model focusing on variables reflecting social status (age, partner status), stressors (stigma), and resources (income, social support). Depressive symptoms were assessed with the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS); 22% of the sample reached the cutoff for severe depression, 56% moderate, and 13% mild depression. Compared to men, women reported lower income, education (50% no formal education vs. 20% men), availability of emotional and instrumental support, and were less likely to be married or cohabiting (53% women vs. 72% of men). However, more women had partners who were HIV-positive (78% women vs. 46% men). Overall, depression severity was negatively associated with availability of emotional support and self-distraction coping, and positively associated with internalized HIV/AIDS stigma, availability of instrumental support, and behavioral disengagement coping. Interactions for instrumental support by income and partner status by age varied significantly by gender. Analyses stratified by gender indicated that: 1) Frequently seeking instrumental support from others was protective for men at all income levels, but only for high-income women; and 2) having a partner was protective for men as they aged, but not for women. These results suggest that gender disparities in depression severity are created and maintained by women's lower social status and limited access to resources. The effect of stigma on depression severity did not vary by gender. These findings may inform the tailoring of future interventions to address mental health needs of PLH in India, particularly gender disparities in access to material and social resources for coping with HIV. Abstract

The use of simulation-based methods for introducing inference is growing in popularity for the Stat 101 course, due in part to increasing evidence of the methods ability to improve students' statistical thinking. This impact comes from simulation-based methods (a) clearly presenting the overarching logic of inference, (b) strengthening ties between statistics and probability or mathematical concepts, (c) encouraging a focus on the entire research process, (d) facilitating student thinking about advanced statistical concepts, (e) allowing more time to explore, do, and talk about real research and messy data, and (f) acting as a firmer foundation on which to build statistical intuition. Thus, we argue that simulation-based inference should be an entry point to an undergraduate statistics program for all students, and that simulation-based inference should be used throughout all undergraduate statistics courses. In order to achieve this goal and fully recognize the benefits of simulation-based inference on the undergraduate statistics program we will need to break free of historical forces tying undergraduate statistics curricula to mathematics, consider radical and innovative new pedagogical approaches in our courses, fully implement assessment-driven content innovations, and embrace computation throughout the curriculum., Comment: To be published in "The American Statistician"

32. Identifying College Students at Risk for Learning Disabilities: Evidence for Use of the Learning Difficulties Assessment in Postsecondary Settings

Abstract

This article describes research supporting the use of the Learning Difficulties Assessment (LDA), a normed and no-cost, web-based survey that assesses difficulties with reading, writing, spelling, mathematics, listening, concentration, memory, organizational skills, sense of control, and anxiety in college students. Previous research has supported the instrument's item and factor structure, reliability, and predictive validity for identifying college students at risk for learning disabilities. In the current study, data from a large scale study (n = 775) demonstrate further psychometric evidence for the instrument's utility as a screening and referral tool for college students at risk for learning disabilities. Recommendations for use of the LDA by postsecondary disability support professionals are discussed as well as limitations of the study and implications for future research.

Abstract

The structural characterization of sol-gel based nano crystalline ZnO material is being reported as we observe several previously unreported structural aspects following a sequence of annealing stages. As-grown samples were characterised by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Chemical purity of the nano-grains and their crystallinity has been monitored by energy dispersive X-ray (EDAX) analysis and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), while the unusual changes in nano-crystal growth structure have been studied by X-ray diffraction method. In addition, such samples have been studied by using perturbed angular correlation (PAC) technique with the short-lived radioactive probe 111mCd. Changes in the local electronic environment following sintering of the nano-crystalline grains have been observed by this method.

34. Assessing the Association between Precourse Metrics of Student Preparation and Student Performance in Introductory Statistics: Results from Early Data on Simulation-Based Inference vs. Nonsimulation-Based Inference

Abstract

The recent simulation-based inference (SBI) movement in algebra-based introductory statistics courses (Stat 101) has provided preliminary evidence of improved student conceptual understanding and retention. However, little is known about whether these positive effects are preferentially distributed across types of students entering the course. We consider how two metrics of Stat 101 student preparation (precourse performance on concept inventory and math ACT score) may or may not be associated with end of course student performance on conceptual inventories. Students across all preparation levels tended to show improvement in Stat 101, but more improvement was observed across all student preparation levels in early versions of a SBI course. Furthermore, students' gains tended to be similar regardless of whether students entered the course with more preparation or less. Recent data on a sample of students using a current version of an SBI course showed similar results, though direct comparison with non-SBI students was not possible. Overall, our analysis provides additional evidence that SBI curricula are effective at improving students' conceptual understanding of statistical ideas postcourse regardless student preparation. Further work is needed to better understand nuances of student improvement based on other student demographics, prior coursework as well as instructor and institutional variables.

Abstract

Background: Early pregnancy failure is a major public health problem throughout the world. It has been estimated that over 10-20% of pregnancies end up in spontaneous abortion and 80% of all these occur before 12 weeks. Mifepristone and Misoprostol are drugs, which are easy to store and require no surgical skills to administer, providing an alternative to surgical intervention that could increase access to abortion care. Objective: The objective of the study was to evaluate the safety, effectiveness, and acceptability of oral mifepristone and misoprostol for the termination of first- trimester pregnancy. The study was carried out in the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Holy Family Red Crescent Medical College Hospital, Dhaka, conducted from June 2021 to May 2022. Methods: A total of 80 women participants of reproductive age group with miscarriage at gestational age up to 28 weeks attended the outdoor of Holy Family Red Crescent Medical College Hospital, Dhaka. A complete history was taken from each patients and accompanying attendants. A thorough clinical examination was done. Relevant investigation reports were collected. Patients were given a tablet of Misoprostol on day 1. Mifepristone & Misoprostol, in the divided dose and repeated after 2 weeks & after 2 weeks only misoprostol is given for 3 days as per needed. They were followed up for 1-3 days before discharge. Participants were asked to return to the hospital two weeks later to conform to clinical status. If incomplete termination was determined by clinical exam or by ultrasound in either of the study arm, women were given the option for surgical evacuation or 500 mcg of Misoprostol for additional follow-up 1 week later to see if expulsion would have occurred spontaneously. If, after the second follow-up visit, abortion was not complete, a surgical completion was performed. Results: Patients belonged to the age group 18-25 years. 47. Periocular capillary hemangioma treated with low dose oral propranolol - presentation and outcome of 30 patients

Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate the presentation and outcome of periocular capillary hemangioma treated with low-dose oral propranolol. Method: Thirty cases of periocular capillary hemangioma prospectively studied from 1st June 2015 to 31st May 2017 who received oral propranolol on an outpatient basis. Hemangioma causing any threat to vision or disfigurement was included and age below 3 months and multiple lesions were excluded. Starting dose of propranolol was 1 mg/kg and increased to 2 mg/kg after 2 weeks as a maintenance dose. The tapering dose was 1 mg/kg of body weight before discontinuing the medication. Treatment was continued till the child is 1 year of age or no further change in color or size of the lesion in two successive follow-ups. Results: Presenting age was 6.36 ± 3.36 months (ranged 3–24 months) with female predominance (70%). In 86.6% of cases, the vision was Central Steady and Maintained and cycloplegic refraction showed marked astigmatism in 3 children which resolved after treatment. Forty-six percent of children showed color change as an initial response to treatment. Most children (33.3%) responded completely within 5 months after starting the treatment. One third patients (33.3%) showed 100% resolution, 50% showed 90% to 70% resolution. Pretreatment and post-treatment lesion size was1.60 ± 0.86 cm2 and 0.30 ± 0.40 cm2 respectively (p - value < 0.0005). None showed any significant adverse effect of oral propranolol. Conclusion: Low-dose oral propranolol is an effective and cost-effective treatment modality for periocular capillary hemangioma and is safe as an outpatient basis.
