Abstract

Aims. To investigate the role of acoustic and magneto-acoustic waves in heating the solar chromosphere, observations in strong chromospheric lines are analyzed by comparing the deposited acoustic-energy flux with the total integrated radiative losses. Methods. Quiet-Sun and weak-plage regions were observed in the Ca II 854.2 nm and H-alpha lines with the Fast Imaging Solar Spectrograph (FISS) at the 1.6-m Goode Solar Telescope (GST) on 2019 October 3 and in the H-alpha and H-beta lines with the echelle spectrograph attached to the Vacuum Tower Telescope (VTT) on 2018 December 11 and 2019 June 6. The deposited acoustic energy flux at frequencies up to 20 mHz was derived from Doppler velocities observed in line centers and wings. Radiative losses were computed by means of a set of scaled non-LTE 1D hydrostatic semi-empirical models obtained by fitting synthetic to observed line profiles. Results. In the middle chromosphere (h = 1000-1400 km), the radiative losses can be fully balanced by the deposited acoustic energy flux in a quiet-Sun region. In the upper chromosphere (h > 1400 km), the deposited acoustic flux is small compared to the radiative losses in quiet as well as in plage regions. The crucial parameter determining the amount of deposited acoustic flux is the gas density at a given height. Conclusions. The acoustic energy flux is efficiently deposited in the middle chromosphere, where the density of gas is sufficiently high. About 90% of the available acoustic energy flux in the quiet-Sun region is deposited in these layers, and thus it is a major contributor to the radiative losses of the middle chromosphere. In the upper chromosphere, the deposited acoustic flux is too low, so that other heating mechanisms have to act to balance the radiative cooling., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables

9. Effect of Preoperative Administration of Dexamethasone vs. Methylprednisolone in Surgical Extraction of Impacted Lower Third Molars: Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial.

Abstract

Background/Objectives: Glucocorticoids are drugs that are increasingly used in oral surgery to reduce trismus, inflammation, and postoperative pain, three frequent complications after the surgical extraction of impacted lower third molars. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of 8 mg dexamethasone versus 40 mg methylprednisolone in the prevention of postoperative complications after third molar surgery. Methods: A randomized double-blind clinical trial was conducted following CONSORT guidelines. In detail, 84 patients were included in the study, who randomly received a single preoperative submucosal dose of dexamethasone (8 mg) or methylprednisolone (40 mg). The variables analyzed, as primary outcomes, were trismus, inflammation, and postoperative pain. The measurements were performed at baseline (0 h), 3 h, 7 h, 24 h, 48 h, and 7 th day using a Visual Analog Scale (VAS), Verbal Rating Scale (VRS), and the Gabka–Matsumara method. Results: Dexamethasone reduced trismus, inflammation, and postoperative pain significantly better than methylprednisolone. Conclusions: Preoperative submucosal administration of 8 mg dexamethasone is effective and safe in reducing the severity of postoperative complications following surgical extraction of impacted lower third molars. 10. Next‐generation antibacterial nanopolymers for treating oral chronic inflammatory diseases of bacterial origin.

Abstract

Background: 'Periodontitis' refers to periodontal destruction of connective tissue attachment and bone, in response to microorganisms forming subgingival biofilms on the root surface, while 'apical periodontitis' refers to periapical inflammatory processes occurring in response to microorganisms within the root canal system. The treatment of both diseases is based on the elimination of the bacterial challenge, though its predictability depends on the ability of disrupting these biofilms, what may need adjunctive antibacterial strategies, such as the next‐generation antibacterial strategies (NGAS). From all the newly developed NGAS, the use of polymeric nanotechnology may pose a potential effective approach. Although some of these strategies have only been tested in vitro and in preclinical in vivo models, their use holds a great potential, and therefore, it is relevant to understand their mechanism of action and evaluate their scientific evidence of efficacy. Objectives: To explore NGAS based on polymeric nanotechnology used for the potential treatment of periodontitis and apical periodontitis. Method: A systemic search of scientific publications of adjunctive antimicrobial strategies using nanopolymers to treat periodontal and periapical diseases was conducted using The National Library of Medicine (MEDLINE by PubMed), The Cochrane Oral Health Group Trials Register, EMBASE and Web of Science. Results: Different polymeric nanoparticles, nanofibres and nanostructured hydrogels combined with antimicrobial substances have been identified in the periodontal literature, being the most commonly used nanopolymers of polycaprolactone, poly(lactic‐co‐glycolic acid) and chitosan. As antimicrobials, the most frequently used have been antibiotics, though other antimicrobial substances, such as metallic ions, peptides and naturally derived products, have also been added to the nanopolymers. Conclusion: Polymeric nanomaterials containing antimicrobial compounds may be considered as a potential NGAS. Its relative efficacy, however, is not well understood since most of the existing evidence is derived from in vitro or preclinical in vivo studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Inside the strategic planning of the University of Murcia appears the objective to improve its image into the regional environment, with the aim to show a more transparent and clear vision of its organization. One of the projects that have been developed in this line of work, is the production of a daily news programme in television, ‘Canal Universitario’, that is being transmitted with the collaboration of Televisión Murciana since september of 1999. Parallely, it has been carried out a digital edition of this programme into the web site of the University of Murcia, making a good use of the degree of development of our electronic information systems. This digital edition includes a database module that allow seek for outdated videos or audios, and a thesaurus specifically developed for this system, in order to describe correctly the information contained into the documents of the database. The interaction of several knowledge areas over an originally televisive product gets an interesting contribution of our University to the emergent context, the Information and Knowledge Society.

Abstract

Polymeric membranes are frequently used for bone regeneration in oral and periodontal surgery. Polymers provide adequate mechanical properties (i.e., Young's modulus) to support oral function and also pose some porosity with interconnectivity to permit for cell proliferation and migration. Bacterial contamination of the membrane is an event that may lead to infection at the bone site, hindering the clinical outcomes of the regeneration procedure. Therefore, polymeric membranes have been proposed as carriers for local antibiotic therapy. A literature search was performed for papers, including peer-reviewed publications. Among the different membranes, collagen is the most employed biomaterial. Collagen membranes and expanded polytetrafluoroethylene loaded with tetracyclines, and polycaprolactone with metronidazole are the combinations that have been assayed the most. Antibiotic liberation is produced in two phases. A first burst release is sometimes followed by a sustained liberation lasting from 7 to 28 days. All tested combinations of membranes and antibiotics provoke an antibacterial effect, but most of the time, they were measured against single bacteria cultures and usually non-specific pathogenic bacteria were employed, limiting the clinical relevance of the attained results. The majority of the studies on animal models state a beneficial effect of these antibiotic functionalized membranes, but human clinical assays are scarce and controversial.

Abstract

La osteointegración está determinada clínica e histológicamente por la estabilidad de los implantes. La obtención de una elevada estabilidad primaria de los implantes en el momento de su inserción, así como su mantenimiento a lo largo de todo el proceso de osteointegración o estabilidad secundaria, es considerado como uno de los prerrequisitos fundamentales para el éxito de cualquier tratamiento con implantes. Mientras que la estabilidad primaria va a depender de unos factores determinados como son la calidad ósea, el diseño macroscópico del implante (diámetro, longitud y forma) y la técnica quirúrgica; la estabilidad secundaria va a depender de otras variables como el diseño microscópico del implante (superficie) y sus propiedades físicas. Determinar los factores que más influyen en la estabilidad para conocer las causas del fracaso implantario, así como diseñar técnicas que mejoren la calidad y cantidad de hueso disponible son, actualmente, uno de los principales retos de la implantología. Por consiguiente, el desarrollo de nuevas técnicas de regeneración ósea y el empleo de sustitutos óseos como el injerto de origen xenógeno, han permitido que el tratamiento con implantes dentales sea una alternativa cada vez más accesible para pacientes que antes no eran candidatos. No obstante, es importante determinar si el hueso regenerado presenta características similares al hueso nativo para las rehabilitaciones con implantes. Después del periodo de cicatrización, se espera que el hueso regenerado proporcione suficiente disponibilidad y densidad ósea para obtener una estabilidad primaria adecuada y mantenerla a lo largo del tiempo. Actualmente, para poder conocer clínicamente el nivel de osteointegración y estabilidad de los implantes en cualquier momento del tratamiento, se emplea el Osstell; un dispositivo que utiliza el Análisis de Frecuencia de Resonancia (RFA) convirtiendo esa frecuencia de resonancia en un cociente de estabilidad de implantes (ISQ). El diseño de nuestro trabajo responde a un estudio clínico multifactorial observacional prospectivo de seguimiento clínico. Las variables estudiadas fueron: localización, densidad ósea, diámetro, tipo de hueso y tipo de implante. Las medidas de estabilidad se realizaron al inicio (tras la inserción del implante), a las 8 semanas (cirugía de segunda fase) y a las 12 semanas (carga protésica). La muestra constituyó un total de 120 implantes divididos en 4 grupos de estudio: Grupo I: 30 implantes Zimmer TSV, insertados en hueso nativo/no regenerado del paciente; Grupo II: 30 implantes Phibo TSH, insertados en hueso nativo/no regenerado del paciente; Grupo III: 30 implantes Zimmer TSV, insertados en hueso regenerado 6 meses antes con xenoinjerto y Grupo IV: 30 implantes Phibo TSH, insertados en hueso regenerado 6 meses antes con xenoinjerto. El nivel de significación se estableció en p≤ 0,05. Se observó como los implantes empleados en este estudio obtuvieron unos valores de ISQ > 65 a las 8 semanas. Del mismo modo, se encontraron diferencias significativas en el ISQ de los implantes en el momento de su inserción en función de la densidad ósea de los maxilares, el tipo de hueso (regenerado o nativo) y el tipo de implante (Zimmer TSV o Phibo TSH) empleado (p< 0,05). Asimismo, la combinación tipo de hueso y tipo de implante mostró diferencias significativas en el valor ISQ de los implantes al inicio y a las 12 semanas. La localización y el diámetro de los implantes no mostraron diferencias significativas en los resultados obtenidos. Los resultados mostraron una gran influencia de la estabilidad primaria en la estabilidad secundaria de los implantes. Por otro lado, a pesar de que los implantes insertados en hueso nativo mostraron una mayor estabilidad, los implantes insertado en hueso regenerado obtuvieron una adecuada estabilidad primaria y secundaria; considerada suficiente para iniciar la carga protésica a las 8 semanas. En cuanto a las variables estudiadas, se pudo observar como la densidad ósea influyó en la estabilidad primaria de los implantes, pero no en la secundaria; siendo los implantes insertados en hueso de mayor densidad los que obtuvieron mayor estabilidad. Por otro lado, el tipo de hueso y el tipo de implante también influyeron en la estabilidad primaria de los implantes; no obstante, cuando se estudió la combinación tipo de hueso con tipo de implante, la estabilidad secundaria también se vio influenciada.
