The GEO-CAPE mission described in NASA's Earth Science and Applications Decadal Survey requires high spatial, temporal, and spectral resolution measurements to monitor and characterize the rapidly changing chemistry of the troposphere over North and South Americas. High-frame-rate focal plane arrays (FPAs) with many pixels are needed to enable such measurements. A high-throughput digital detector readout integrated circuit (ROIC) that meets the GEO-CAPE FPA needs has been developed, fabricated, and tested. The ROIC is based on an innovative charge integrating, fast, high-precision analog-to-digital circuit that is built into each pixel. The 128×128-pixel ROIC digitizes all 16,384 pixels simultaneously at frame rates up to 16 kHz to provide a completely digital output on a single integrated circuit at an unprecedented rate of 262 million pixels per second. The approach eliminates the need for off focal plane electronics, greatly reducing volume, mass, and power compared to conventional FPA implementations. A focal plane based on this ROIC will require less than 2 W of power on a 1×1-cm integrated circuit. The ROIC is fabricated of silicon using CMOS technology. It is designed to be indium bump bonded to a variety of detector materials including silicon PIN diodes, indium antimonide (InSb), indium gallium arsenide (In- GaAs), and mercury cadmium telluride (HgCdTe) detector arrays to provide coverage over a broad spectral range in the infrared, visible, and ultraviolet spectral ranges.

The Thermal Emission Spectrometer (TES), an EOS CHEM platform instrument, and its companion instrument, the Airborne Emission Spectrometer (AES), are both Fourier transform spectrometers designed for remote sensing of the troposphere.

The Stratospheric Wind Infrared Limb Sounder (SWIRLS), which measures wind, temperature, and the abundance of O3 and N2O in the stratosphere from earth orbit is selected as one of the complement of atmospheric sounders that will fly on the Earth Observing System B platform series. This paper outlines the SWIRLS investigation and describes laboratory experiments demonstrating SWIRLS wind measurement capabilities.

Spectral response of pressure-modulator-radiometer cell measured with help of lead-salt tunable diode laser. Laser chosen because of narrow bandwidths {2 x 10 to negative 4th power (cm) to negative 1st power} and relatively high powers (up to 1 mW continuous) of such lasers and because available for wavelengths from 3 to 30 micrometers. Direct measurement of spectral response enables formulation of more-precise atmospheric-transmission functions, enabling extraction of better information from readings taken with instrument.

A new concept for a field portable spectrometer designed to meet the needs of the remote sensing community is presented. This instrument uses acoustooptic tunable filters (AOTFs) as wavelength sorters, allowing the design of a rugged, compact, light-weight tool that provides broad spectral coverage, great versatility, and ease of utilization. The spectrometer provides continuous spectral coverage from 0.4 to 2.5 microns with two channels defined by detector technology, while a visible channel covering the 0.4 to 1.0 micron spectral range uses silicon PV photodiodes. The short-wavelength IR channel covers the 0.9 to 2.5 micron special range with thermoelectrically cooled lead sulfide PC detectors.

Acoustical modulator not necessary. Two-frequency electro-optic gas-correlation spectrometer relatively simple. Illumination provided by ordinary lamp, no moving parts, and filtered output of detector is beat-frequency signal directly proportional to correlation between spectra of gases in cells.

Electro-optic phase-modulation gas-correlation spectroscopy demonstrated in laboratory tests promising candidate technique for remote sensing of gases, temperatures, and wind velocities in atmosphere. In technique radiation emitted by sample atmosphere passed through electro-optic phase modulator, and modulated and unmodulated versions of spectrum alternately passed through reference absorption cell containing gas to be detected. Radiation emerging from reference cell band-pass filtered and detected. Correlation signal is difference in intensity between phase-modulated and unmodulated detected signals.

It is argued that the next generation of imaging spectrometers will need greater capabilities and more flexibility than the High Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (HIRIS) and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS), which were designed for the first Earth Observation System platform. The emerging technology that represents a major advance in the scientific utility of imaging spectrometry is the acoustooptic tunable filters, (AOTFs). AOTFs are compact robust solid-state crystals which provide rapid (millisecond) electronically-controlled spectral tunability. This paper discusses the evolving requirements of imaging spectrometers and examines the basic system parameters of the HIRIS and the MODIS concepts involving the use of AOTFs, which will satisfy these requirements.

The successful application of high-resolution tunable diode laser spectroscopy to the diagnostic measurement of a pressure modulator radiometer (PMR) is reported, and recorded line transmission profiles for a single N2O line at 1272/cm are presented. PMR measurements obtained for mean cell pressures of about 10, 20, and 30 Torr were found to be consistent with theoretical predictions. The validity of single-pressure and two-pressure approximation representations of the mean and modulated PMR transmission spectra has been verified.
