A two-dimensional (2D) material, formed for example by a self-assembled molecular monolayer or by a single layer of a van der Walls material, can couple efficiently with photonic nanocavities, potentially reaching the strong coupling regime. The coupling can be modelled using classical harmonic oscillator models or cavity quantum electrodynamics Hamiltonians that often neglect the direct dipole-dipole interactions within the monolayer. Here, we diagonalize the full Hamiltonian of the system, including these direct dipole-dipole interactions. The main effect on the optical properties of a typical 2D system is simply to renormalize the effective energy of the bright collective excitation of the monolayer that couples with the nanophotonic mode. On the other hand, we show that for situations of extreme field confinement, large transition dipole moments and low losses, fully including the direct dipole-dipole interactions is critical to correctly capture the optical response, with many collective states participating in it. To quantify this result, we propose a simple equation that indicates the condition for which the direct interactions strongly modify the optical response., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures

We investigate the collective scattering of coherent light from a thermal alkali-metal vapor with temperatures ranging from 350 to 450 K, corresponding to average atomic spacings between $0.7 \lambda$ and $0.1 \lambda$. We develop a theoretical model treating the atomic ensemble as coherent, interacting, radiating dipoles. We show that the two-time second-order correlation function of a thermal ensemble can be described by an average of randomly positioned atomic pairs. Our model illustrates good agreement with the experimental results. The formalism of continuous-time quantum walks on graphs has been widely used in the study of quantum transport of energy and information, as well as in the development of quantum algorithms. In experimental settings, however, there is limited control over the coupling coefficients between the different nodes of the graph (which are usually considered to be real-valued), thereby restricting the types of quantum walks that can be implemented. In this work, we apply the idea of Floquet engineering in the context of continuous-time quantum walks, i.e., we define periodically-driven Hamiltonians which can be used to simulate the dynamics of certain target continuous-time quantum walks. We focus on two main applications: i) simulating quantum walks that break time-reversal symmetry due to complex coupling coefficients; ii) increasing the connectivity of the graph by simulating the presence of next-to-nearest neighbor couplings. Our work provides explicit simulation protocols that may be used for directing quantum transport, engineering the dispersion relation of one-dimensional quantum walks or investigating quantum dynamics in highly connected structures., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures. We present a theoretical description of the coupling between longitudinal optical phonons and collective excitations of a two-dimensional electron gas. By diagonalizing the Hamiltonian of the system, including Coulomb electron-electron and Fr\"ohlich interactions, we observe the formation of multisubband polarons, mixed states partially phonon and partially multisubband plasmon, characterized by a coupling energy which is a significant fraction, up to ~40%, of the phonon energy. We demonstrate that multisubband plasmons and longitudinal optical phonons are in the ultra-strong coupling regime in several III-V and II-VI material systems., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

Sympathetic laser cooling of a single mode graphene membrane coupled to an atomic cloud interacting via Casimir-Polder forces has been recently proposed. Here, we extend this study to the effect of secondary graphene membrane whose frequency may be far or close to resonance. We show that if the two mechanical modes are close together, it is possible to simultaneously cool both modes. Conversely, if the two frequencies are set far apart, the secondary mode does not affect the cooling of the first one. We also study the entanglement properties of the steady-state using the logarithmic negativity. We show how stationary mechanical entanglement between two graphene sheets can be generated by means of vacuum fluctuations. Moreover, we find that, within feasible experimental parameters, large steady-state acoustomechanical entanglement, i.e. entanglement between the phononic and mechanical mode, $E_N \approx 5$, can be generated., Comment: Accepted at Physica Scripta (2017)

We propose a scheme to actively cool the fundamental flexural (out-of-plane) mode of a graphene sheet via vacuum forces. Our setup consists in a cold atom cloud placed close to a graphene sheet at distances of a few micrometers. The atoms couple to the graphene membrane via Casimir-Polder forces. By deriving a self-consistent set of equations governing the dynamics of the atomic gas and the flexural modes of the graphene, we show to be possible to cool graphene from room temperatures by actively (laser) cooling an atomic gas. By choosing the right set of experimental parameter we are able to cool a graphene sheet down to ~ 60 microkelvin., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures

We propose a quantum thermal machine composed of two nanomechanical resonators (NMR) (two membranes suspended over a trench in a substrate), placed a few $\mu$m from each other. The quantum thermodynamical cycle is powered by the Casimir interaction between the resonators and the working fluid is the polariton resulting from the mixture of the flexural (out-of-plane) vibrations. With the help of piezoelectric cells, we select and sweep the polariton frequency cyclically. We calculate the performance of the proposed quantum thermal machines and show that high efficiencies are achieved thanks to (i) the strong coupling between the resonators and (ii) the large difference between the membrane stiffnesses. Dispersion forces have a sizeable effect on the energy levels of highly excited Rydberg atoms when brought close to material surfaces. Rydberg atoms experience energy shifts in the GHz range at micrometer distances, suggestive of considerable state admixture. We show that despite the non-applicability of perturbation theory for Rydberg atoms near a surface, the energy shift due to the dispersion interaction can be obtained from an exact diagonalization of the interaction Hamiltonian by finding the zeros of the Pick function. Moreover, we show that contrary to intuition from single-mode approaches, surface-induced state mixing is generally suppressed even for large interaction energies. The Casimir-Polder interaction of ground-state and excited atoms with graphene is investigated with the aim to establish whether graphene systems can be used as a shield for vacuum fluctuations of an underlying substrate. We calculate the zero-temperature Casimir-Polder potential from the reflection coefficients of graphene within the framework of the Dirac model. For both doped and undoped graphene we show limits at which graphene could be used effectively as a shield. Additional results are given for AB-stacked bilayer graphene., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

We discuss the possibility to create hybrid quantum systems that combine ultracold atoms with graphene membranes. We investigate a setup in which a cold atom cloud is placed close to a free-standing sheet of graphene at distances on the order of a few hundred nanometers. The atoms then couple to the graphene membrane via Casimir-Polder forces. Temporal changes in the atomic state of the atomic cloud changes the Casimir-Polder interaction, thereby leading to the creation of a backaction force in the graphene sheet. Casimir-Polder interactions between an atom and a macroscopic body are typically regarded as due to the exchange of virtual photons. This is strictly true only at zero temperature. At finite temperature, real-photon exchange can provide a significant contribution to the overall dispersion interaction. Here we describe a new resonant two-photon process between an atom and a planar interface. We derive a second order effective Hamiltonian to explain how atoms can couple resonantly to the surface polariton modes of the dielectric medium. This leads to second-order energy exchanges which we compare with the standard nonresonant Casimir-Polder energy., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures
