The extensive stellar spectroscopic datasets that are available for studies in Galactic Archeaology thanks to, for example, the Gaia-ESO Survey, now benefit from having a significant number of targets that overlap with asteroseismology projects such as Kepler, K2 and CoRoT. Combining the measurements from spectroscopy and asteroseismology allows us to attain greater accuracy with regard to the stellar parameters needed to characterise the stellar populations of the Milky Way. The aim of this Gaia-ESO Survey special project is to produce a catalogue of self-consistent stellar parameters by combining measurements from high-resolution spectroscopy and precision asteroseismology. We carried out an iterative analysis of 90 K2@Gaia-ESO red giants. The spectroscopic values of Teff were used as input in the seismic analysis to obtain log(g) values. The seismic estimates of log(g) were then used to re-determine the spectroscopic values of Teff and [Fe/H]. Only one iteration was required to obtain parameters that are in good agreement for both methods and thus, to obtain the final stellar parameters. A detailed analysis of outliers was carried out to ensure a robust determination of the parameters. The results were then combined with Gaia DR2 data to compare the seismic log(g) with a parallax-based log(g) and to investigate instances of variations in the velocity and possible binaries within the dataset. This analysis produced a high-quality catalogue of stellar parameters for 90 red giant stars observed by both K2 and Gaia-ESO that were determined through iterations between spectroscopy and asteroseismology. We compared the seismic gravities with those based on Gaia parallaxes to find an offset which is similar to other studies that have used asteroseismology. Context. The CoRoT and Kepler missions have paved the way for synergies between exoplanetology and asteroseismology. The use of seismic data helps providing stringent constraints on the stellar properties which directly impact the results of planetary studies. Amongst the most interesting planetary systems discovered by Kepler, Kepler-444 is unique by the quality of its seismic and classical stellar constraints. Its magnitude, age and the presence of 5 small-sized planets orbiting this target makes it an exceptional testbed for exoplanetology. Aims. We aim at providing a detailed characterization of Kepler-444, focusing on the dependency of the results on variations of key ingredients of the theoretical stellar models. This thorough study will serve as a basis for future investigations of the planetary evolution of the system orbiting Kepler-444. Methods. We use local and global minimization techniques to study the internal structure of the exoplanet-host star Kepler-444. We combine seismic observations from the Kepler mission, Gaia DR2 data and revised spectroscopic parameters to precisely constrain its internal structure and evolution. Results. We provide updated robust and precise determinations of the fundamental parameters of Kepler-444 and demonstrate that this low-mass star bore a convective core during a significant portion of its life on the main-sequence. Using seismic data, we are able to estimate the lifetime of the convective core to approximately 8 Gyr out of the 11 Gyr of the evolution of Kepler-444. The revised stellar parameters found by our thorough study are M = 0.754 +- 0.03M_Sun , R = 0.753 +- 0.01R_Sun , Age = 11 +- 1 Gy., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Analyses of data from spectroscopic and astrometric surveys have led to conflicting results concerning the vertical characteristics of the Milky Way. Ages are often used to provide clarity, but typical uncertainties of $>$ 40\,\% restrict the validity of the inferences made. Using the \textit{Kepler} APOKASC sample for context, we explore the global population trends of two K2 campaign fields (3 and 6), which extend further vertically out of the Galactic plane than APOKASC. We analyse the properties of red giant stars utilising three asteroseismic data analysis methods to cross-check and validate detections. The Bayesian inference tool PARAM is used to determine the stellar masses, radii and ages. Evidence of a pronounced red giant branch bump and an [$\alpha$/Fe] dependence on the position of the red clump is observed from the radii distribution of the K2 fields. Two peaks in the age distribution centred at $\sim$5 and and $\sim$12 Gyr are found using a sample with $\sigma_{\rm{age}}$ $<$ 35\,\%. In a comparison with \textit{Kepler}, we find the older peak to be more prominent for K2. This age bimodality is also observed based on a chemical selection of low- ($\leq$ 0.1) and high- ($>$ 0.1) [$\alpha$/Fe] stars. As a function of vertical distance from the Galactic mid-plane ($|Z|$), the age distribution shows a transition from a young to old stellar population with increasing $|Z|$ for the K2 fields. Further coverage of campaign targets with high resolution spectroscopy is required to increase the yield of precise ages achievable with asteroseismology., Comment: 17 pages, 16 figures. The NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) is about to provide full-frame images of almost the entire sky. The amount of stellar data to be analysed represents hundreds of millions stars, which is several orders of magnitude above the amount of stars observed by CoRoT, Kepler, or K2 missions. We aim at automatically classifying the newly observed stars, with near real-time algorithms, to better guide their subsequent detailed studies. In this paper, we present a classification algorithm built to recognise solar-like pulsators among classical pulsators, which relies on the global amount of power contained in the PSD, also known as the FliPer (Flicker in spectral Power density). As each type of pulsating star has a characteristic background or pulsation pattern, the shape of the PSD at different frequencies can be used to characterise the type of pulsating star. The FliPer Classifier (FliPer$_{Class}$) uses different FliPer parameters along with the effective temperature as input parameters to feed a machine learning algorithm in order to automatically classify the pulsating stars observed by TESS. Using noisy TESS simulated data from the TESS Asteroseismic Science Consortium (TASC), we manage to classify pulsators with a 98% accuracy. Among them, solar-like pulsating stars are recognised with a 99% accuracy, which is of great interest for further seismic analysis of these stars like our Sun. Similar results are obtained when training our classifier and applying it to 27 days subsets of real Kepler data. A key aspect in the determination of stellar properties is the comparison of observational constraints with predictions from stellar models. Asteroseismic Inference on a Massive Scale (AIMS) is an open source code that uses Bayesian statistics and a Markov Chain Monte Carlo approach to find a representative set of models that reproduce a given set of classical and asteroseismic constraints. These models are obtained by interpolation on a pre-calculated grid, thereby increasing computational efficiency. We test the accuracy of the different operational modes within AIMS for grids of stellar models computed with the Li\`ege stellar evolution code (main sequence and red giants) and compare the results to those from another asteroseismic analysis pipeline, PARAM. Moreover, using artificial inputs generated from models within the grid (assuming the models to be correct), we focus on the impact on the precision of the code when considering different combinations of observational constraints (individual mode frequencies, period spacings, parallaxes, photospheric constraints,...). Our tests show the absolute limitations of precision on parameter inferences using synthetic data with AIMS, and the consistency of the code with expected parameter uncertainty distributions. Interpolation testing highlights the significance of the underlying physics to the analysis performance of AIMS and provides caution as to the upper limits in parameter step size. The recently launched NASA Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission is going to collect lightcurves for a few hundred million of stars and we expect to increase the number of pulsating stars to analyze compared to the few thousand stars observed by the CoRoT, $\textit{Kepler}$ and K2 missions. However, most of the TESS targets have not yet been properly classified and characterized. In order to improve the analysis of the TESS data, it is crucial to determine the type of stellar pulsations in a timely manner. We propose an automatic method to classify stars attending to their pulsation properties, in particular, to identify solar-like pulsators among all TESS targets. It relies on the use of the global amount of power contained in the power spectrum (already known as the FliPer method) as a key parameter, along with the effective temperature, to feed into a machine learning classifier. Asteroseismology provides global stellar parameters such as masses, radii or surface gravities using the mean global seismic parameters as well as the effective temperature for thousands of low-mass stars $(0.8 M_\odot

Since the CoRoT and Kepler missions, the availability of high quality seismic spectra for red giants has made them the standard clocks and rulers for Galactic Archeology. With the expected excellent data from the TESS and PLATO missions, red giants will again play a key role in Galactic studies and stellar physics, thanks to the precise masses and radii determined by asteroseismology. The determination of these quantities is often based on so-called scaling laws, which have been used extensively for main-sequence stars. We show how the SOLA inversion technique can provide robust determinations of the mean density of red giants within 1 per cent of the real value, using only radial oscillations. Combined with radii determinations from Gaia of around 2 per cent precision, this approach provides robust, less model-dependent masses with an error lower than 10 per cent. It will improve age determinations, helping to accurately dissect the Galactic structure and history. We present results on artificial data of standard models, models including an extended atmosphere from averaged 3D simulations and non-adiabatic frequency calculations to test surface effects, and on eclipsing binaries. We show that the inversions provide very robust mean density estimates, using at best seismic information. However, we also show that a distinction between red-giant branch and red-clump stars is required to determine a reliable estimate of the mean density. Asteroseismic forward modelling techniques are being used to determine fundamental properties (e.g. mass, radius, and age) of solar-type stars. The need to take into account all possible sources of error is of paramount importance towards a robust determination of stellar properties. We present a study of 34 solar-type stars for which high signal-to-noise asteroseismic data is available from multi-year Kepler photometry. We explore the internal systematics on the stellar properties, that is, associated with the uncertainty in the input physics used to construct the stellar models. In particular, we explore the systematics arising from: (i) the inclusion of the diffusion of helium and heavy elements; and (ii) the uncertainty in solar metallicity mixture. We also assess the systematics arising from (iii) different surface correction methods used in optimisation/fitting procedures. The systematics arising from comparing results of models with and without diffusion are found to be 0.5%, 0.8%, 2.1%, and 16% in mean density, radius, mass, and age, respectively. The internal systematics in age are significantly larger than the statistical uncertainties. We find the internal systematics resulting from the uncertainty in solar metallicity mixture to be 0.7% in mean density, 0.5% in radius, 1.4% in mass, and 6.7% in age. The surface correction method by Sonoi et al. and Ball & Gizon's two-term correction produce the lowest internal systematics among the different correction methods, namely, ~1%, ~1%, ~2%, and ~8% in mean density, radius, mass, and age, respectively. Stellar masses obtained using the surface correction methods by Kjeldsen et al. and Ball & Gizon's one-term correction are systematically higher than those obtained using frequency ratios., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables. Deciphering the assembly history of the Milky Way is a formidable task, which becomes possible only if one can produce high-resolution chrono-chemo-kinematical maps of the Galaxy. Data from large-scale astrometric and spectroscopic surveys will soon provide us with a well-defined view of the current chemo-kinematical structure of the Milky Way, but will only enable a blurred view on the temporal sequence that led to the present-day Galaxy. As demonstrated by the (ongoing) exploitation of data from the pioneering photometric missions CoRoT, Kepler, and K2, asteroseismology provides the way forward: solar-like oscillating giants are excellent evolutionary clocks thanks to the availability of seismic constraints on their mass and to the tight age-initial-mass relation they adhere to. In this paper we identify five key outstanding questions relating to the formation and evolution of the Milky Way that will need precise and accurate ages for large samples of stars to be addressed, and we identify the requirements in terms of number of targets and the precision on the stellar properties that are needed to tackle such questions. By quantifying the asteroseismic yields expected from PLATO for red-giant stars, we demonstrate that these requirements are within the capabilities of the current instrument design, provided that observations are sufficiently long to identify the evolutionary state and allow robust and precise determination of acoustic-mode frequencies. This will allow us to harvest data of sufficient quality to reach a 10% precision in age. This is a fundamental pre-requisite to then reach the more ambitious goal of a similar level of accuracy, which will only be possible if we have to hand a careful appraisal of systematic uncertainties on age deriving from our limited understanding of stellar physics, a goal which conveniently falls within the main aims of PLATO's core science., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomical Notes
