Nature-assisted therapy (NAT) has become more common and recognized in both practice and research. The literature often describes how NAT gradually emerged in the UK and the US offering rehabilitation of soldiers suffering from traumatic experiences after active service in WW I and WW II. The main question of this review is to investigate what happened to this patient group? Consequently the aim is to systematically review: The literature; the evidence level; the health outcomes; and the transmissibility of the therapy programmes and results for practitioners. The review describes the development and status of practice and research concerning NAT for veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The systematic review included a seven-step literature search. Relevant data sources were scrutinized in order to retrieve literature meeting the predefined inclusion criteria. Due to the limited amount of peer-reviewed literature, non-peer-reviewed literature was also included in the review. The final selection yielded eleven peer reviewed and nine non-peer-reviewed publications. Three can be characterized as RCT studies, while the remainder is qualitative case studies. Eight themes emerged from the systematic analysis of the qualitative case studies. This review found that a large amount of projects offering NAT to veterans suffering from PTSD exist in many parts of the world and they present no adverse negative results. Recommendations for future practice and research are posed.

The model presented in this book focuses on how to design new and improve existing green spaces so they can offer certain recreational values. The experienced values, or perceived sensory dimensions (PSD), are preferred by people to different degrees depending on their state of mind. Used in an appropriate way, PSDs can help to improve the mental health of the population.

This paper develops, explores and evaluates an evidence-based approach to playground design, with a public park playground (playlab Cph) in Copenhagen as a case study. In the increasingly urbanised world, park playgrounds are valuable places that support healthy child development by providing opportunities for play, nature exploration and sensory stimulation. As it is increasingly expected that designers base their decisions on research evidence, there is a need to develop approaches to facilitate this, which also applies to playground design. The design of PlayLab Cph was based on relevant evidence, best practice, and the theories of Affordances and Behaviour Settings. A post-occupancy evaluation was carried out through a questionnaire survey and observation studies, which revealed that a majority of the potential evidence-based affordances were actualised, and that the application of the theories resulted in a more informed design. Although preliminary, this evidence-based approach seems valuable for practitioners and students within the field of playground design.

This master thesis is the final assignment that completes a master programme in landscape architecture at the University of Copenhagen. The focus is on the design and use of an urban residential street in The Hague. Cities today are growing at a rapid pace, as more people worldwide choose to live their lives in urban areas. One of the consequences of urbanization is the pressure and threat to the green living environments for recreation and social activities close to where people live. This is unfortunate as they play an important role in fulfilling people’s essential needs. Research shows that urban residents worldwide strongly wish; (nature needs) contact with nature (1), aesthetic preference (2), places in which to recreate and play (3), (human needs) social interaction and privacy (4), participation in the design process (5), a sense of community identity (6). (Matsuoka and Kaplan, 2007). Research also provides strong evidences that “the design of urban landscapes strongly influences the well-being and behaviour of users and nearby inhabitants” (ibid.). Urban planning and landscape design plays therefore an important role in developing our society today. The way we design and plan our physical surroundings can have a large impact on people’s health and well-being, in the way our physical surroundings are planned and designed. Transvaalkwartier is an urban neighbourhood in The Hague. Schalk Burgerstraat is a residential street in Transvaalkwartier and creates the foundation of this thesis. Like many other urban areas, Transvaalkwartier is densely built. It is thus important that the public places that already exists in Transvaal are designed in a way that gives people an living environment that supports people’s health and feeling of well-being. The purpose of the master thesis ‘Taming the Beast – a study on the successful future campsite in Denmark’ was to try, to establish an understanding of the different aspects of the Danish campsites in order to give recommendations and guidelines for campsite design parameters. Therefor the overall problem statement was: “What is the successful future campsite in Denmark?” To uncover the details of this problem five sub-problems where set with relevance to the overall problem statement. The sub-problems include describing the current situation of Danish campsites and their users, how to be successful as a business and nonetheless as a campsite and finally future tendencies in order to give recommendation and guidelines on the future Danish campsite. Throughout this thesis, a combination of different sources was used to uncover the most aspects possible, from analyses and comprehensive interview studies to specific camping cases and interviews. The overall findings of this thesis were that the current situation of the Danish campsites are in general experiencing a decrease in nightly stays and especially the smaller 1-2 star and the 4-5 campsites, is feeling the effect. This however has benefited the 3 star campsites, which holds 68% of the entire Danish campsite market. Most of the Danish campsites are found to be very broad in their user focus, a majority aiming at families with children and 50+ users without children. Few campsites are found with a narrower user focus, however those that choose to niche themselves is found to have success with this strategy. When looking at the current location of the Danish campsite the good location of a campsite is generally near a beach and in a popular holiday house area. However, location near popular tourist cities can also be preferable for a campsite. This Master’s Thesis proposes a renewal for the garden belonging to the rehabilitation center for drugs and alcoholics called Alfa, located in the city of Fredensborg. Literature research, the exploration and registration of the site, together with a thorough study of the target group’s attributes and needs and the results gathered from the questionnaires and interviews formulate the design guidelines and the concept. The result of the thesis is developing an evidence-based design which materializes in a therapy garden.

Københavns Kommune oplever en stigende efterspørgsel på daginstitutionspladser i de eksisterende børneinstitutioner, hvilket medfører, at kommunen må finde på kreative løsninger så som tagbørnehaver, udflytterbørnehaver og busbørnehaver. Det har også medført, at nye retningslinjer for udendørsareal er nedsat/fastsat til maksimum 10 m2 per barn i de Københavnske børneinstitutioner. I år 2008 blev der implementeret retningslinjer for renovering og nyetablering af ude legeområder, dette tiltag var nyt. Københavns Kommune budgetterede med et årligt beløb til renovering af 12-14 børneinstitutioners udearealer. Det er anerkendt, at natur er vigtig i børns udvikling, idet naturen er levende og i konstant forandring. Erfaringer med naturens elementer er en vigtig del af børns læring, da de her tilegner sig vigtige og sunde psykiske og fysiske erfaringer. Det er derfor vigtigt, at børnene har mulighed for at stifte bekendtskab med natur på selve institutionslegepladsen, hvor den vidensbaserede planlægning skaber udendørs miljøer, der medvirker til forbedret psykisk og fysisk velbefindende hos børn. Det er formålet med specialet, at give Københavns Kommune et inspirations materiale, bestående af brugbare plantelister med planter til små beplantninger, planter der kan tåle det høje slid, planter der bidrager med sansestimuli til børns udvikling, samt design principper til inspiration og rådgivning til børneinstitutionsledere og personale, landskabsarkitekter samt rådgivere i kommunen. Metoden består af litteraturstudie omhandlende undersøgelser af børn, deres udvikling og udemiljøer. Resultaterne er baseret på interview med Københavns Kommune, spørgeskemaundersøgelse af lederen i ti udvalgte institutioner, samt besøg og planteregistreringer i de ti institutioner. På baggrund af undersøgelsen kan det konkluderes, at det er muligt, at tilvejebringe design principper for små beplantninger i Københavnske børneinstitutioner, og institutionerne og Københavns Kommune e, The Municipality of Copenhagen is experiencing increasing demand for day care in childcare centers, which means that the municipality must find creative solutions so as roof kindergartens, nursery schools and kindergartens in busses. It has also led to guidelines for the outdoor areas, which is set at a maximum of 10 m2 per child in childcare centers of Copenhagen. In the year 2008 guidelines for renovations and new establishment of outdoor play areas where implemented in the Municipality of Copenhagen. They allocated an annual budget for the renovation of 12-14 playgrounds in childcare centers. It is recognized that nature is important in children's development, since nature is alive and in constant change, such changes experiences with nature's elements are an important part of children's learning, as it is essential and healthy experience. It is therefore important that the children have the opportunity to become acquainted with the nature of the playground at the Child care centers, where the knowledge-based planning creating outdoor environments, that contribute to improve mental and physical well-being of children. The aim of the thesis, is to provide the Municipality of Copenhagen with an inspirational material, consisting of usable plant lists containing plants for small plantings, plants which can withstand the high wear, plants that contribute to sensory stimuli to children's development and design principles for inspiration and advice to the child care center managers and staff, landscape architects and consultants in the Municipality. The method consists of literature concerning studies of children and their development and outdoor environments. The results are based on interviews with the Municipality of Copenhagen, questionnaire survey of the leaders in ten selected Child care centers, as well as visits and plant records in the ten centers. This project outlines the transformation of the congested car-oriented 42nd Street in Midtown Manhattan, towards a people-oriented, car-free public plaza. The project addresses contemporary urban quality issues such as walkability and livability, and relates to the contemporary issue of creating healthy cities. A light-rail transit system is a suggested solution to the congestion problem, and this idea has been introduced in the form of a recently held international design competition, that serves as a starting point for this project. This opportunity of re-imagining this significant public space in New York City has led to an exploration of exciting possibilities for creating a people-friendly and lively plaza through landscape architecture and urban design interventions. Building on the inspiration of well established urban design philosophies and relating to recent successful interventions in New York’s public realm, this project proposes a transformation of the identity of iconic 42nd Street by activating the public realm and supporting human interaction with the public space. The project demonstrates an innovative design solution that is flexible in its programming and functionality, yet coherent in terms of identity and legibility. The design aims to support the functionality of the place and enhance the experiential and characteristic qualities. People will be re-claiming the streets of modern cities as they form a crucial part of the public space and offer opportunities for public life. Plaza42 is a proposal that visualizes this idea, by abandoning car traffic and replacing them for high quality, healthy, social and attractive public space to be enjoyed by everyone.

Mens Vi Venter analyser rumlige og socio-rumlige aspekter ved et af Danmarks ikoniske almene boligbyggerier: Brøndby Strand Parkerne. Dette gøres gennem at facilitere en co-creation af et midlertidigt hænge-ud-sted for drenge, der hænger ud i kælderen og på fællesarealerne i boligområdet. Mens Vi Venter behandler centrale udfordringer indenfor byplanlægning ved at diskutere, hvordan man kan identificere, motivere og mægle mellem en bred palet af aktører og forene deres forskellige interesser i et langtidssikret projekt. Mens Vi Venter tester potentialer ved at anvende midlertidige DIY initiativer som strategisk udviklingsværktøj i almene boligområder. På baggrund heraf og med afsæt i egne data fra eksplorative, stedsspecifikke landskabsanalyser udstikker specialet design retningslinjer for: Karakteristika af Urbane Hæng-ud-Steder., While We Wait examines spatial and socio-spatial aspects of one of Denmark's iconic social housing areas: Brøndby Strand Parkerne. This is done through facilitating a co-creation of a temporary hang out place for and with young boys, who usually hung out in a basement and the common spaces of the social housing area. While We Wait addresses central challenges of urban planning by discussing how to identify, motivate and mediate between a wide range of actors and unite their different agendas in one long lasting project. While We Wait tests the potential of using temporary DIY initiatives as a strategic development tool in practice. Based on the findings and explorative site-specific landscape analyses, this thesis suggests design guidelines for: Characteristics of Urban Hangout Places.

Vores samfund er påvirket af en række miljømæssige problemer og kriser, og vi står overfor nye udfordringer. Disse udfordringer er blandt andet de fremtidige klimaændringer og tilbagegang af den biologiske mangfoldighed, samtidig med at vi distancerer os fra naturen. Der er i dag bred enighed om, at dette primært skyldes menneskelige aktiviteter. Der er ingen enkle løsningsmodeller. Specialet, Lynge Skole - ’Lad det regne med frøer’, forsøger at forholde sig til disse udfordringer og sammentænke de naturlige systemer med de urbane systemer. Projektet tager udgangspunkt i skolegården og har til formål at skabe opmærksomhed i børnehøjde. Lynge Skole er et led i Allerød Kommunes klimatilpasningsplan, der skal løse en række udfordringer omkring regnvandshåndtering i engområdet Lynge Fælled i landsbyen Lynge. Flere enorme regnskyl har betydet overbelastning af kloakken og dermed risiko for kloakvand i søer og vandløb. En række tiltag skal sikre lokal afledning af regnvand samt forbedre vand- og naturkvaliteten i området. Ca. halvdelen af tagfladerne ønskes frakoblet kloaknettet og håndteret lokalt på skolens udeareal. Dette speciale søger at skabe et evidensbaseret skolegårdsdesign til Lynge Skole i Allerød Kommune ved at sammentænke klimatilpasning med formidling af beskyttelse og styrkelse af danske habitater og flora og fauna, og samtidig inkorporere fokus på leg & læring. Det har ledt til de tre hovedelementer; vand, natur og leg & læring, der er gennemgående for hele projektet. Specialet er bygget op i tre dele. I den første del indhentes relevant viden inden for regnvandshåndtering, biodiversitet og leg & læring. Anden del af opgaven er analysen, som undersøger de eksisterende forhold på Lynge Skole. Den sidste del er et overordnet designforslag på baggrund af den indsamlede viden. Der lægges op til større brug af udearealerne i frikvartererne samt i undervisningen, ved at skabe spændende opholds-, lege- og undervisningsrum på skolens udearealer. Den ny, Our society is influenced by a number of environmental problems and crises, and we are facing new and large challenges. These challenges include future climate change and the decline of biological diversity, and at the same time we distance ourselves from nature. There is a broad consensus that this is primarily due to human activities and there are no simple solutions. This project about Lynge School - ‘Let it rain with frogs’, tries to deal with the challenges we are facing, and integrate the natural systems with the urban systems. The thesis is based on the schools outdoor areas and aims to raise awareness about these issues for children. Lynge School is part of the climate adaptation plan set by Allerød Municipality to address a number of challenges concerning stormwater management in the area around Lynge Fælled in Lynge. Several large cloudbursts meant overloading of the sewers and therefore the risk of sewer water in the nearby water bodies. A number of initiatives will ensure local drainage of stormwater and improve the water quality and the nature in the area. About half of the roof surfaces is planned to be disconnected from the drainage network and handled locally in the school’s outdoor areas. This thesis explores how to create an evidence-based design for the outdoor areas of Lynge School in the municipality of Allerød. The design is incorporating considerations of climate adaptation with providing protection and enhancement of Danish habitats and flora and fauna, while focusing on creating places for play and lear-ning. This has led to the three main elements; water, nature and play & learning, which sets the framework for the whole project. The thesis is structured in three parts. The first part contains a review of literature and relevant theories within stormwater management, biodiversity and play & learning. Beplantning og terræn kan være berigende elementer på en daginstitutions udeareal, både som rumdelende og sansegivende elementer og til leg. I det følgende gives nogle forslag til, hvordan man kan tilføre beplantning og terræn på arealerne - uden at de bliver ufleksible.

Legen på daginstitutioners udearealer foregår ikke kun på de legeredskaber, der er placeret på arealet. Også underlag, afgrænsninger og kanter kan spille en vigtig rolle i børnenes leg og motoriske udvikling. En optimal udnyttelse af materialer og dimensionering kan derfor øge legeværdien og derudover også forberede driftsforholdene.

Når man skal vælge legeelementer til daginstitutioners udeareal, er det vigtigt med en kombination af præfabrikerede og ikke prædefinerede legeelementer. Også sammenhængen med omgivelserne er vigtig, da den kan øge elementernes legeværdi. Videnbladet tager endvidere fat i disponeringen af faldzoner, der hænger uløseligt sammen med legeelementer. Også vandleg, som kan aktivere rigtig mange børn, behandles. Her gælder det om at vælge de rigtige løsninger, da de ellers kan komme til at stå ubenyttet hen.
