Search

The inner hundred parsecs of the Milky Way hosts the nearest supermassive black hole, largest reservoir of dense gas, greatest stellar density, hundreds of massive main and post main sequence stars, and the highest volume density of supernovae in the Galaxy. As the nearest environment in which it is possible to simultaneously observe many of the extreme processes shaping the Universe, it is one of the most well-studied regions in astrophysics. Due to its proximity, we can study the center of our Galaxy on scales down to a few hundred AU, a hundred times better than in similar Local Group galaxies and thousands of times better than in the nearest active galaxies. The Galactic Center (GC) is therefore of outstanding astrophysical interest. However, in spite of intense observational work over the past decades, there are still fundamental things unknown about the GC. JWST has the unique capability to provide us with the necessary, game-changing data. In this White Paper, we advocate for a JWST NIRCam survey that aims at solving central questions, that we have identified as a community: i) the 3D structure and kinematics of gas and stars; ii) ancient star formation and its relation with the overall history of the Milky Way, as well as recent star formation and its implications for the overall energetics of our galaxy's nucleus; and iii) the (non-)universality of star formation and the stellar initial mass function. We advocate for a large-area, multi-epoch, multi-wavelength NIRCam survey of the inner 100\,pc of the Galaxy in the form of a Treasury GO JWST Large Program that is open to the community. We describe how this survey will derive the physical and kinematic properties of ~10,000,000 stars, how this will solve the key unknowns and provide a valuable resource for the community with long-lasting legacy value., Comment: This White Paper will be updated when required (e.g. new authors joining, editing of content). Protein-Protein Interaction Networks aim to model the interactome, providing a powerful tool for understanding the complex relationships governing cellular processes. These networks have numerous applications, including functional enrichment, discovering cancer driver genes, identifying drug targets, and more. Various databases make protein-protein networks available for many species, including Homo sapiens. This work topologically compares four Homo sapiens networks using a coarse-to-fine approach, comparing global characteristics, sub-network topology, specific nodes centrality, and interaction significance. Results show that the four human protein networks share many common protein-encoding genes and some global measures, but significantly differ in the interactions and neighbourhood. Small sub-networks from cancer pathways performed better than the whole networks, indicating an improved topological consistency in functional pathways. The centrality analysis shows that the same genes play different roles in different networks. We discuss how studies and analyses that rely on protein-protein networks for humans should consider their similarities and distinctions.

The insertion of renewable sources in power systems may cause a decrease in the system's equivalent inertia, which result in the instability of the power system. On the other hand, energy storage systems have proven to be an effective tool to increase the flexibility in the operation of energy systems, which may favor integrating renewable energy sources. In this way, plug-in electric vehicle (PEVs) batteries can be used as storages when such vehicles are parked and connected to the grid. In this work, the contribution of PEVs to primary frequency response is analyzed in systems dominated by renewable sources. A day-ahead scheduling model is developed considering PEVs groups can actively participate in electricity markets, supporting day-ahead reserve capacity and providing primary frequency response. This article presents and describes a 229 bus test system that includes wind, hydro and fossil fuel power plants. It represents the Northeast subsystem of the Brazilian Interconnected Power System (BIPS). The test system supplies a load of 4.17 GW, being 13% powered by wind farms, which is the current wind power penetration level of the BIPS. The data comprehends different load levels based on the typical load behavior and typical capacity factors of wind, hydro and fossil fuel plants, as well as the capacity of transmission and sub-transmission lines, transformers, and the adopted structure for the test system. The data is compiled considering models and operating scenarios of the BIPS, and allow performing studies of static voltage stability, sensitivity of voltage stability margin considering the wind farms, and multi-objective optimization considering market constraints. Like most spiral galaxies, the Milky Way contains a population of blue, metal-poor globular clusters and another of red, metal-rich ones. Most of the latter belong to the bulge, and therefore they are poorly studied compared to the blue (halo) ones because they suffer higher extinction and larger contamination from field stars. These intrinsic difficulties, together with a lack of low-mass bulge globular clusters, are reasons to believe that their census is not complete yet. Indeed, a few new clusters have been confirmed in the last few years. One of them is VVV CL001, the subject of the present study. We present a new spectroscopic analysis of the recently confirmed globular cluster VVV CL001, made by means of MUSE@VLT integral field data. Individual spectra were extracted for stars in the VVV CL001 field. Radial velocities were derived by cross-correlation with synthetic templates. Coupled with PMs from the VVV survey, these data allow us to select 55 potential cluster members, for which we derive metallicities using the public code The Cannon. The mean radial velocity of the cluster is Vhelio = -324.9 +- 0.8 km/s,as estimated from 55 cluster members. This high velocity, together with a low metallicity [Fe/H] = -2.04 +- 0.02 dex suggests that VVV CL001 could be a very old cluster. The estimated distance is d = 8.23 +- 0.46 kpc, placing the cluster in the Galactic bulge. Furthermore, both its current position and the orbital parameters suggest that VVV CL001 is most probably a bulge globular cluster., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, accepted by MNRAS

This paper proposes an approach to aggregate nonstructured power system controllers preserving the dynamical characteristics of the original devices. The method is based on linear operations that use the frequency response of the elements, resulting in an accurate input-output description of the equivalent controller when compared to the original ones. The developed method was applied to a model of the future interconnected Paraguayan-Argentinean power system to produce a dynamic equivalent used in a real-time simulator to test the special protection scheme needed for the safe operation of the this future system. The high penetration of distributed renewable energy resources in power systems has changed their dynamic behavior, not only at the distribution level but also at the transmission levels. For analyses performed in this new reality of interconnected systems, a suitable equivalent model is required to represent the active dynamics of distribution systems. In this context, this paper proposes the application of a gray-box method to obtain an appropriate equivalent model for active distribution networks. From data measured at the point of common coupling, a trajectory sensitivity analysis is carried out to select the most important parameters of this equivalent model, which are then estimated by an evolutionary algorithm. Context. Bulge globular clusters (BGCs) are exceptional tracers of the formation and chemodynamical evolution of this oldest Galactic component. However, until now, observational difficulties have prevented us from taking full advantage of these powerful Galactic archeological tools. Aims. CAPOS, the bulge Cluster APOgee Survey, addresses this key topic by observing a large number of BGCs, most of which have only been poorly studied previously. Even their most basic parameters, such as metallicity, [{\alpha}/Fe], and radial velocity, are generally very uncertain. We aim to obtain accurate mean values for these parameters, as well as abundances for a number of other elements, and explore multiple populations. In this first paper, we describe the CAPOS project and present initial results for seven BGCs. Methods. CAPOS uses the APOGEE-2S spectrograph observing in the H band to penetrate obscuring dust toward the bulge. For this initial paper, we use abundances derived from ASPCAP, the APOGEE pipeline. Results. We derive mean [Fe/H] values of $-$0.85$\pm$0.04 (Terzan 2), $-$1.40$\pm$0.05 (Terzan 4), $-$1.20$\pm$0.10 (HP 1), $-$1.40$\pm$0.07 (Terzan 9), $-$1.07$\pm$0.09 (Djorg 2), $-$1.06$\pm$0.06 (NGC 6540), and $-$1.11$\pm$0.04 (NGC 6642) from three to ten stars per cluster. We determine mean abundances for eleven other elements plus the mean [$\alpha$/Fe] and radial velocity. CAPOS clusters significantly increase the sample of well-studied Main Bulge globular clusters (GCs) and also extend them to lower metallicity. We reinforce the finding that Main Bulge and Main Disk GCs, formed in situ, have [Si/Fe] abundances slightly higher than their accreted counterparts at the same metallicity. We investigate multiple populations and find our clusters generally follow the light-element (anti)correlation trends of previous studies of GCs of similar metallicity. The Galactic globular clusters (GGCs) located in the inner regions of the Milky Way suffer from high extinction that makes their observation challenging. The VVV survey provides a way to explore these GGCs in the near-infrared where extinction effects are highly diminished. We conduct a search for variable stars in several inner GGCs, taking advantage of the unique multi-epoch, wide-field, near-infrared photometry provided by the VVV survey. We are especially interested in detecting classical pulsators that will help us constrain the physical parameters of these GGCs. In this paper, the second of a series, we focus on NGC6656 (M22), NGC6626 (M28), NGC6569, and NGC6441; these four massive GGCs have known variable sources, but quite different metallicities. We also revisit 2MASS-GC02 and Terzan10, the two GGCs studied in the first paper of this series. We present an improved method and a new parameter that efficiently identify variable candidates in the GGCs. We also use the proper motions of those detected variable candidates and their positions in the sky and in the color-magnitude diagrams to assign membership to the GGCs. We identify and parametrize in the near-infrared numerous variable sources in the studied GGCs, cataloging tens of previously undetected variable stars. We recover many known classical pulsators in these clusters, including the vast majority of their fundamental mode RR Lyrae. We use these pulsators to obtain distances and extinctions toward these objects. Recalibrated period-luminosity-metallicity relations for the RR Lyrae bring the distances to these GGCs to a closer agreement with those reported by Gaia, except for NGC6441. Recovered proper motions for these GGCs also agree with those reported by Gaia, except for 2MASS-GC02, the most reddened GGC in our sample, where the VVV near-infrared measurements provide a more accurate determination of its proper motions., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 18 pages, 14 Figures, 9 Tables

The projected density distribution of type ab RR Lyrae (RRab) stars was characterised from the innermost regions of the Milky Way to the halo, with the aim of placing constraints on the Galaxys evolution. The compiled sample (N_RRab = 64,850) stems from fundamental mode RR Lyrae variables identified by the VVV, OGLE, and Gaia surveys. The distribution is well fitted by three power laws over three radial intervals. In the innermost region (R < 2.2 deg) the distribution follows Sigma_RRab[1] propto R ^(-0.94 +- 0.051), while in the external region the distribution adheres to Sigma_RRab[2] propto R^(-1.50 +- 0.019) for 2.2 deg< R <8.0 deg and Sigma_RRab[3] propto R ^(-2.43 +- 0.043) for 8.0 deg < R <30.0 deg. Conversely, the cumulative distribution of red clump (RC) giants exhibits a more concentrated distribution in the mean, but in the central R < 2.2 deg the RRab population is more peaked, whereas globular clusters (GCs) follow a density power law (Sigma_GCs propto R ^(-1.59 +- 0.060) for R<30.0 deg) similar to that of RRab stars, especially when considering a more metal-poor subsample ([Fe/H]<-1.1 dex). The main conclusion emerging from the analysis is that the RRab distribution favours the star cluster infall and merger scenario for creating an important fraction (>18 %) of the central Galactic region. The radii containing half of the populations (half populations radii) are R_H=6.8 deg (0.99 kpc), R_H =4.2 deg (0.61 kpc), and R_H =11.9 deg (1.75 kpc) for the RRab stars, RC giants, and GCs, respectively. Finally, merely 1% of the stars have been actually discovered in the innermost region (R < 35 pc) out of the expected (based on our considerations) total number of RRab therein: N sim 1,562. The VVV microlensing search has recently surveyed the region of the Galactic plane at b=0 within -10.00 < l < 10.44 deg. in the near-infrared (IR), discovering hundreds of microlensing events. In this paper we explore the microlensing events with background sources that might be located in the far disk of the Galaxy, beyond the bulge. We discuss the possible configurations for the microlensing lenses and sources located at different places within the Galactic plane. Then we search for these events using the local red clump centroids of the VVV near-IR color-magnitude diagrams. According to the estimated distances and proper motions, N=20 events may have sources located in the far disk. The candidates for far-disk sources show on average longer timescales (tE= 49.3 +- 7.9 days) than the mean of the timescale distribution for the bulge red clump sources (tE= 36.4 +- 1.1 days). We conclude that the population of microlensing events in the region -10.00 < l < 10.44, -0.46 < b < 0.65 deg. contains a non-negligible number of events with candidate far-disk sources (~ 11 %). Our results are relevant in view of the future microlensing plans with the Roman Space Telescope (formerly WFIRST) in the near-IR., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures and 2 tables. Type II Cepheids are both useful distance indicators and tracers of old age stellar populations in their host galaxy. We summarize near-infrared observations of type II Cepheids in the Large Magellanic Cloud and discuss the absolute calibration of their Period-Luminosity relations. Combining with the near-infrared data for type II Cepheids in the Galactic bulge from the VISTA VVV survey, we estimated a robust distance to the Galactic center. We found that type II Cepheids trace the spherically symmetric spatial distribution with possible evidence of ellipsoidal structure, similar to RR Lyrae stars. We search for microlensing events in fields along the Galactic minor axis, ranging from the Galactic center to -3.7

We report the discovery of VVV-WIT-04, a near-infrared variable source towards the Galactic disk located ~0.2 arcsec apart from the position of the radio source PMN J1515-5559. The object was found serendipitously in the near-IR data of the ESO public survey VISTA Variables in the V\'ia L\'actea (VVV). Our analysis is based on variability, multicolor, and proper motion data from VVV and VVV eXtended surveys, complemented with archive data at longer wavelengths. We suggest that VVV-WIT-04 has an extragalactic origin as the near-IR counterpart of PMN J1515-5559. The Ks-band light-curve of VVV-WIT-04 is highly variable and consistent with that of an Optically Violent Variable (OVV) quasar. The variability in the near-IR can be interpreted as the redshifted optical variability. Residuals to the proper motion varies with the magnitude suggesting contamination by a blended source. Alternative scenarios, including a transient event such as a nova or supernova, or even a binary microlensing event are not in agreement with the available data., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures. We search for microlensing events in the zero-latitude area of the Galactic Bulge using the VVV Survey near-IR data. We have discovered a total sample of $N=630$ events within an area covering $20.68 deg^2$ between the years 2010 and 2015. In this paper we describe the search and present the data for the final sample, including near-IR magnitudes, colors and proper motions, as well as the standard microlensing parameters. We use the near-IR Color-Magnitude and Color-Color Diagram to select $N_{RC}=290$ events with red-clump sources to analyze the extinction properties of the sample in the central region of the Galactic plane. The timescale distribution and its dependence in the longitude axis is presented. The mean timescale decreases as we approach the Galactic minor axis ($b=0$ deg). Finally, we give examples of special microlensing events, such as binaries, short timescale events, and events with strong parallax effect., Comment: 51 pages, 26 figures, 4 tables. For the first time we detected microlensing events at zero latitude in the Galactic bulge using the VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea Survey (VVV) data. We have discovered a total sample of N = 630 events within an area covering 20.7 sq. deg. Using the near-IR color magnitude diagram we selected N = 291 red clump sources, allowing us to analyse the longitude dependence of microlensing across the central region of the Galactic plane. We thoroughly accounted for the photometric and sampling efficiency. The spatial distribution is homogeneous, with the number of events smoothly increasing toward the Galactic center. We find a slight asymmetry, with a larger number of events toward negative longitudes than positive longitudes, that is possibly related with the inclination of the bar along the line of sight. Stellar mergers are estimated to be common events in the Galaxy. The best studied stellar merger case to date is V1309 Sco (= Nova Scorpii 2008) which was originally misclassified as a Nova event. Later identified as the merger of the components of a cool overcontact binary system with 1.52 Msun and 0.16 Msun, V1309 Sco showed an initial period of P = 1.4 days before the merger. Post-outburst evolution demonstrated that V1309 Sco was unlike the typical Classical Novae and Symbiotic Recurrent Novae with significant dust production around it, and indicated that the system may become a post-AGB (or pre-PN) soon. Here we present a study of V1309 Sco about ten years after the outburst, based on near-IR variability and colour data from the ESO surveys VISTA Variables in the V\'{i}a L\'actea (VVV) and VVV eXtended (VVVX). We find that reasonable equilibrium in this stellar merger is being reached and that the star has settled into a nearly constant magnitude. A dramatic change in its near-IR colours from (J-Ks) = 1.40 in 2010 to (J-Ks) = 0.42 in 2015 and a possible low amplitude periodic signal with P = 0.49 days in the post-outburst data are consistent with a "blue straggler" star, predicted to be formed from a stellar merger., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 6 pages and 4 figures

We conducted a variable star search on the metal-rich Galactic globular cluster NGC 6652 using archival Gemini-S/GMOS data. We report the discovery of nine new variable stars in the NGC 6652 field, of which we classify six as eclipsing binaries and one as SX Phoenicis stars, leaving two variables without classification. Using proper motions from Gaia DR2 and HST, albeit with some uncertainties, we find that the cluster, the field, and the background Sagittarius stream, have 3 of these variables each. We also reassess the membership of known variables based on the Gaia proper motions, confirming the existence of one RR Lyrae star in the cluster., Comment: AJ accepted

The RR Lyrae (RRL) rich globular cluster M 62 (NGC 6266) is one of the most massive globular clusters in the Milky Way, located in the dense region of the Galactic bulge, where dynamical processes that affect the survival of globular clusters are maximised. Using Gaia DR2 data we have found clear evidence for an excess of RRLs beyond the cluster tidal radius of M 62, associated partly with stars stripped into the Galaxy field. This is confirmed with new VVVX survey observations, that discard any differential reddening effect as the possible cause of the observed RRL density excess. We also determined the orbit of M 62 using accurate new measurements of its distance, radial velocity and proper motions (PMs), finding that its orbit is prograde respect to the direction of the Galactic rotation. Orbits are integrated in the non-axisymmetric galactic model \texttt{GravPot16}, which includes the perturbations due to the central Galactic bar. M 62 shows a particular orbital behaviour, having a dynamical signature of the bar-bulge region. The small extra-tidal RRLs extensions observed are roughly aligned towards the galactic center and the direction almost perpendicular to the galactic plane and not with its motion along its orbit, which may be a clear sign of bulge-crossing shocks, during the last passage close of the cluster towards its perigalacticon. The events show a homogeneous distribution, smoothly increasing in numbers towards the Galactic centre, as predicted by different models. We find a slight asymmetry, with a larger number of events toward negative longitudes than positive longitudes. This asymmetry is seen both in the complete sample and the subsample of red clump giant sources, and it is possibly related with the inclination of the bar along the line of sight.
