Crystalline nanoporous molecular networks are assembled on the Ag(111) surface, where the pores confine electrons originating from the surface state of the metal. Depending on the pore sizes and their coupling, an antibonding level is shifted upwards by 0.1 to 0.3 eV as measured by scanning tunneling microscopy. On molecular sites, a down-shifted bonding state is observed, which is occupied under equilibrium conditions. Low-temperature force spectroscopy reveals energy dissipation peaks and jumps of frequency shifts at bias voltages, which are related to the confined states. The dissipation maps show delocalization on the supra-molecular assembly and a weak distance-dependence of the dissipation peaks. These observations indicate that two-dimensional arrays of coupled quantum dots are formed, which are quantitatively characterized by their quantum capacitances and resonant tunneling rates. Substituting heteroatoms and non-benzenoid carbons into nanographene structure offers an unique opportunity for atomic engineering of electronic properties. Here we show the bottom-up synthesis of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with embedded fused BN-doped rubicene components on a Au(111) surface using on-surface chemistry. Structural and electronic properties of the BN-GNRs are characterized by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) with CO-terminated tips supported by numerical calculations. The periodic incorporation of BN heteroatoms in the GNR leads to an increase of the electronic band gap as compared to its undoped counterpart. Molecular self-assembly plays a very important role in various aspects of technology as well as in biological systems. Governed by covalent, hydrogen or van der Waals interactions–self-assembly of alike molecules results in a large variety of complex patterns even in two dimensions (2D). Prediction of pattern formation for 2D molecular networks is extremely important, though very challenging, and so far, relied on computationally involved approaches such as density functional theory, classical molecular dynamics, Monte Carlo, or machine learning. Such methods, however, do not guarantee that all possible patterns will be considered and often rely on intuition. Here, we introduce a much simpler, though rigorous, hierarchical geometric model founded on the mean-field theory of 2D polygonal tessellations to predict extended network patterns based on molecular-level information. Based on graph theory, this approach yields pattern classification and pattern prediction within well-defined ranges. When applied to existing experimental data, our model provides a different view of self-assembled molecular patterns, leading to interesting predictions on admissible patterns and potential additional phases. While developed for hydrogen-bonded systems, an extension to covalently bonded graphene-derived materials or 3D structures such as fullerenes is possible, significantly opening the range of potential future applications.

Obtaining a robust superconducting state in atomically precise nanographene (NG) structures by proximity to a superconductor could foster the discovery of topological superconductivity in graphene. On-surface synthesis of such NGs has been achieved on noble metals and metal oxides; however, it is still absent on superconductors. Here, we present a synthetic method to induce superconductivity of polymeric chains and NGs adsorbed on the superconducting Nb(110) substrate covered by thin Ag films. Using atomic force microscopy at low temperature, we characterize the chemical structure of each subproduct formed on the superconducting Ag layer. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy further allows us to elucidate the electronic properties of these nanostructures, which consistently show a superconducting gap.

On-surface synthesis is a powerful method for the fabrication of π-conjugated nanomaterials. Herein, we demonstrate chemoselective Sonogashira coupling between (trimethylsilyl)ethynyl and chlorophenyl groups in silylethynyl- and chloro-substituted partially fluorinated phenylene ethynylenes (SiCPFPEs) on Ag(111). The desilylative Sonogashira coupling occurred with high chemoselectivity up to 75 %, while the competing Ullmann and desilylative Glaser homocoupling reactions were suppressed. A combination of bond-resolved scanning tunneling microscopy/atomic force microscopy (STM/AFM) and DFT calculations revealed that the oligomers were obtained by the formation of intermolecular silylene tethers (-Me2 Si-) through CH3 -Si bond activation at 130 °C and subsequent elimination of the tethers at an elevated temperature of 200 °C.

International audience; We use an on-surface synthesis approach to drive the homocoupling reaction of a simple dithiophenylfunctionalized precursor on Cu(111). The C-S activation reaction is initiated at low annealing temperature and yields unsaturated hydrocarbon chains interconnected in a fully conjugated reticulated network. High-resolution atomic force microscopy imaging reveals the opening of the thiophenyl rings and the presence of trans-and cis-oligoacetylene chains as well as pentalene units. The chemical transformations were studied by C 1s and S 2p core level photoemission spectroscopy and supported by theoretical calculations. At higher annealing temperature, additional cyclization reactions take place, leading to the formation of small graphene flakes.

Nitrogen-doped Kagome graphene (N-KG) has been theoretically predicted as a candidate for the emergence of a topological band gap as well as unconventional superconductivity. However, its physical realization still remains very elusive. Here, we report on a substrate-assisted reaction on Ag(111) for the synthesis of two-dimensional graphene sheets possessing a long-range honeycomb Kagome lattice. Low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) with a CO-terminated tip supported by density functional theory (DFT) are employed to scrutinize the structural and electronic properties of the N-KG down to the atomic scale. We demonstrate its semiconducting character due to the nitrogen doping as well as the emergence of Kagome flat bands near the Fermi level which would open new routes towards the design of graphene-based topological materials.

A combination of low temperature atomic force microcopy and molecular dynamic simulations is used to demonstrate that soft designer molecules realize a sidewinding motion when dragged over a gold surface. Exploiting their longitudinal flexibility, pyrenylene chains are indeed able to lower diffusion energy barriers via on-surface directional locking and molecular strain. The resulting ultralow friction reaches values on the order of tens of pN reported so far only for rigid chains sliding on an incommensurate surface. Therefore, we demonstrate how molecular flexibility can be harnessed to realize complex nanomotion while retaining a superlubric character. This is in contrast with the paradigm guiding the design of most superlubric nanocontacts (mismatched rigid contacting surfaces).

The atomic buckling in 2D “Xenes” (such as silicene) fosters a plethora of exotic electronic properties such as a quantum spin Hall effect and could be engineered by external strain. Quantifying the buckling magnitude with subangstrom precision is, however, challenging, since epitaxially grown 2D layers exhibit complex restructurings coexisting on the surface. Here, we characterize using low-temperature (5 K) atomic force microscopy (AFM) with CO-terminated tips assisted by density functional theory (DFT) the structure and local symmetry of each prototypical silicene phase on Ag(111) as well as extended defects. Using force spectroscopy, we directly quantify the atomic buckling of these phases within 0.1-Å precision, obtaining corrugations in the 0.8- to 1.1-Å range. The derived band structures further confirm the absence of Dirac cones in any of the silicene phases due to the strong Ag-Si hybridization. Our method paves the way for future atomic-scale analysis of the interplay between structural and electronic properties in other emerging 2D Xenes.

On-surface chemical reaction has become a very powerful technique to synthesize nanostructures by linking small molecules in the bottom-up approach. Given the fact that most reactants are simultaneously activated at certain temperatures, a sequential reaction in a controlled way has remained challenging. Here, we present an on-surface synthesis of multi-block co-oligomers from trifluoromethyl (CF3 ) substituted porphyrin metal complexes. The oligomerization on Au(111) is demonstrated with a combination of bond-resolved scanning probe microscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Even after the first oligomerization of single monomer unit, the termini of the oligomer keep the CF3 group, which can be used as a reactant for further coupling in a sequential order. Consequently, copper, cobalt, and palladium complexes of bisanthracene-fused porphyrin oligomers were linked with each other in a designed order.

Background: Topological superconductivity emerging in one- or two-dimensional hybrid materials is predicted as a key ingredient for quantum computing. However, not only the design of complex heterostructures is primordial for future applications but also the characterization of their electronic and structural properties at the atomic scale using the most advanced scanning probe microscopy techniques with functionalized tips.Results: We report on the topographic signatures observed by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) of carbon monoxide (CO) molecules, iron (Fe) atoms and sodium chloride (NaCl) islands deposited on superconducting Pb(111). For the CO adsorption a comparison with the Pb(110) substrate is demonstrated. We show a general propensity of these adsorbates to diffuse at low temperature under gentle scanning conditions.Conclusion: Our findings provide new insights into high-resolution probe microscopy imaging with terminated tips, decoupling atoms and molecules by NaCl islands or tip-induced lateral manipulation of iron atoms on top of the prototypical Pb(111) superconducting surface.

Controlling friction on the nanometer scale is one of nowadays’ challenges for scientists and engineers. Since the first observation of atomic friction reported by Mate et al. for a tungsten tip sliding on graphite, a lot of progress has been made in the understanding of this phenomenon on the atomic scale. An accurate description of the motion of a sharp tip elastically driven on a crystal surface by a microcantilever was first given by Tomanek et al., who based their interpretation on the Prandtl–Tomlinson model. The lateral (friction) force acting on the tip can be estimated by measuring the angle of torsion of the cantilever. The tip sticks to a given equilibrium position on the surface lattice until the driving force becomes high enough to cause a slip into the closest equilibrium position along the pull direction. The resulting stick-slip motion corresponds to a sawtooth-shaped time evolution of the lateral force with the atomic periodicity of the surface lattice. However, this scenario is observed only if a precise condition is fulfilled. The lateral stiffness of the driving spring must be lower than the curvature of the tip-surface interaction potential. If this is not the case, the tip slides on the surface without abrupt jumps, and a “superlubric” scenario is observed.

Bending and twisting around carbonâEuro"carbon single bonds are ubiquitous in natural and synthetic polymers. Force-induced changes were so far not measured at the single-monomer level, owing to limited ways to apply local forces. We quantified down to the submolecular level the mechanical response within individual poly-pyrenylene chains upon their detachment from a gold surface with an atomic force microscope at 5 K. Computer simulations based on a dedicated force field reproduce the experimental traces and reveal symmetry-broken bent and rotated conformations of the sliding physisorbed segment besides steric hindrance of the just lifted monomer. Our study also shows that the tipâEuro"molecule bond remains intact but remarkably soft and links force variations to complex but well-defined conformational changes.

Thermal expansion, the response in shape, area or volume of a solid with heat, is usually large in molecular materials compared to their inorganic counterparts. Resulting from the intrinsic molecule flexibility, conformational changes or variable intermolecular interactions, the exact interplay between these mechanisms is however poorly understood down to the molecular level. Here, we investigate the structural variations of a two-dimensional supramolecular network on Au(111) consisting of shape persistent polyphenylene molecules equipped with peripheral dodecyl chains. By comparing high-resolution scanning probe microscopy and molecular dynamics simulations obtained at 5 and 300 K, we determine the thermal expansion coefficient of the assembly of 980 ± 110 × 10−6 K−1, twice larger than other molecular systems hitherto reported in the literature, and two orders of magnitude larger than conventional materials. This giant positive expansion originates from the increased mobility of the dodecyl chains with temperature that determine the intermolecular interactions and the network spacing., The intrinsic flexibility of molecules opens the door to unusual physical properties. Now, a large thermal expansion coefficient of 980 ± 110 × 10−6 K−1 is observed by scanning probe microscopy in a supramolecular network on a gold surface.

Conformational isomers are stereoisomers that can interconvert over low potential barriers by rotation around a single bond. However, such bond rotation is hampered by geometrical constraints when molecules are adsorbed on surfaces. Here we show that the adsorption of 4,4'-bis(4-carboxyphenyl)-6,6'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine molecules on surfaces leads to the appearance of pro-chiral single-molecules on NiO(001) and to enantiopure supramolecular domains on Au(111) surfaces containing the $transoid$ molecule conformation. Upon additional Fe adatom deposition, molecules undergo a controlled interconversion from a $transoid$ to $cisoid$ conformation as a result of coordination of the Fe atoms to the 2,2'-bipyridine moieties. As confirmed by atomic force microscopy images and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements, the resulting molecular structures become irreversibly achiral.

On-surface chemical reaction has become a very powerful technique to conjugate small precursor molecules and several reactions have been proposed with the aim to fabricate functional nanostructures on surfaces. Here we present an unforeseen adsorption mode of 9,10-bis-((trimethylsilyl)ethynyl)anthracene on a Cu(111)surface and the resulting one-shot desilylative homocoupling of of the adsorbate by annealing at 400 K. With a combination of high-resolution atomic force microscopy and density functional theory calculations, we found that the triple bonds and silicon atoms of the monomer chemically interact with the copper surface. After the oligomerization, we discovered that the anthracene units are linked to each other via buta-1,3-diynediyl fragments while keeping the surface clean. Furthermore, the force measurement revealed the chemical nature at the center of anthracene unit.

openaire: EC/FP7/610446/EU//PAMS According to Hückel theory, an anti-aromatic molecule possessing (4n)π-electrons becomes unstable. Although the stabilization has been demonstrated by radialene-type structures - fusing aromatic rings to anti-aromatic rings - in solution, such molecules have never been studied at a single molecular level. Here, we synthesize a cyclobutadiene derivative, dibenzo[b,h]biphenylene, by an on-surface intramolecular reaction. With a combination of high-resolution atomic force microscopy and density functional theory calculations, we found that a radialene structure significantly reduces the anti-aromaticity of the cyclobutadiene core, extracting π-electrons, while the small four-membered cyclic structure keeps a high density of the total charge.

Majorana fermions have recently garnered a great attention outside the field of particle physics, in condensed matter physics. In contrast to their particle physics counterparts, Majorana fermions are zero energy, chargeless, spinless, composite quasiparticles, residing at the boundaries of so-called topological superconductors. Furthermore, in opposition to any particles in the standard model, Majorana fermions in solid-state systems obey non-Abelian exchange statistics that make them attractive candidates for decoherence-free implementations of quantum computers. In this review, we report on the recent advances to realize synthetic topological superconductors supporting Majorana fermions with an emphasis on chains of magnetic impurities on the surface of superconductors. After outlining the theoretical underpinning responsible for the formation of Majorana fermions, we report on the subsequent experimental efforts to build topological superconductors and the resulting evidence in favor of Majorana fermions, focusing on scanning tunneling microscopy and the hunt for zero-bias peaks in the measured current. We conclude by summarizing the open questions in the field and propose possible experimental measurements to answer them.

Cryo-electron microscopy can determine the structure of biological matter in vitrified liquids. However, structure alone is insufficient to understand the function of native and engineered biomolecules. So far, their mechanical properties have mainly been probed at room temperature using tens of pico-newton forces with a resolution limited by thermal fluctuations. Here we combine force spectroscopy and computer simulations in cryogenic conditions to quantify adhesion and intra-molecular properties of spray-deposited single-strand DNA oligomers on Au(111). Sub-nanometer resolution images reveal folding conformations confirmed by simulations. Lifting shows a decay of the measured stiffness with sharp dips every 0.2–0.3 nm associated with the sequential peeling and detachment of single nucleotides. A stiffness of 30–35 N m−1 per stretched repeat unit is deduced in the nano-newton range. This combined study suggests how to better control cryo-force spectroscopy of adsorbed heterogeneous (bio)polymer and to potentially enable single-base recognition in DNA strands only few nanometers long., Cryo-electron microscopy can determine the structure but not the nanomechanics of biological matter. Here the authors combine force spectroscopy in cryogenic conditions with computer simulations to characterize the properties of DNA simultaneously down to the sub-nm level.

Low temperature measurements of the tunneling current as a function of the applied bias voltage have been performed on a dense constant-height grid above individual copper phthalocyanine molecules adsorbed on a Cu(111) surface. By appropriate tuning of the applied bias, the molecule can be reversibly switched between two configurations in which pairs of opposite maxima appear rotated by 90 ∘ in the tunneling current map. The underlying conformations are revealed by density functional calculations including van der Waals interactions: a C 2 v symmetric ground state and two energetically equivalent states, in which the molecule is twisted and rotated around its center by ± 7 ∘ . For tip biases above 200 mV position-dependent current switching is observed, as in previous measurements of telegraph noise [Schaffert et al. , Nat. Mater. 12 , 223 (2013) ]. In a small voltage interval around zero the measured current becomes bistable. Switching to a particular state can be initiated by sweeping the voltage past well-defined positive and negative thresholds at certain positions above the molecule or by scanning at constant current and a reduced reverse bias.

Metal-surface physisorbed graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) constitute mobile nanocontacts whose interest is simultaneously mechanical, electronic, and tribological. Previous work showed that GNRs adsorbed on Au(111) generally slide smoothly and superlubrically owing to the incommensurability of their structures. We address here the nanomechanics of detachment, as realized when one end is picked up and lifted by an AFM cantilever. AFM nanomanipulations and molecular-dynamics (MD) simulations identify two successive regimes, characterized by (i) a progressively increasing local bending, accompanied by the smooth sliding of the adhered part, followed by (ii) a stick-slip dynamics involving sudden bending relaxation associated with intermittent jumps of the remaining adhered GNR segment and tail end. AFM measurements of the vertical force exhibit oscillations which, compared with MD simulations, can be associated with the successive detachment of individual GNR unit cells of length 0.42 nm. Extra modulations within one single period are caused by steplike advancements of the still-physisorbed part of the GNR. The sliding of the incommensurate moiré pattern that accompanies the GNR lifting generally yields an additional long-period oscillation: while almost undetectable when the GNR is aligned in the standard "R30" orientation on Au(111), we predict that such feature should become prominent in the alternative rotated "R0" orientation on the same surface, or on a different surface, such as perhaps Ag(111).

Water interaction with surface modified nanodiamonds (NDs) is critical for many possible applications of NDs e.g. in biomedicine. Here we report on investigation of water interaction with hydrogenated and oxidized detonation nanodiamonds (H-DNDs, O-DNDs) by means of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermal analysis, and Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM). Higher water content (4.4%) as well as weaker interaction of water with H-DNDs are identified by thermal analysis. It is explained by hydrophobicity of the H-DND surface, as revealed by the analysis of bending and stretching vibrations of surface water in FTIR spectra. On the other hand, hydrophilic nature of O-DNDs leads to lower water content (3.1%) but stronger interaction with the O-DND surface. This is evidenced by as high as 300 °C desorption temperature of the surface water from O-DNDs. KPFM analysis shows that the surface-bound water can have significant screening effect on contact potential difference (CPD) of nanodiamonds (up to 510 mV) as well as on the CPD difference between H-DNDs and O-DNDs (from 50 mV to 210 mV). Nevertheless, H-DNDs exhibit always lower work function.

Friction is the oldest branch of non-equilibrium condensed matter physics and, at the same time, the least established at the fundamental level. A full understanding and control of friction is increasingly recognized to involve all relevant size and time scales. We review here some recent advances on the research focusing of nano- and mesoscale tribology phenomena. These advances are currently pursued in a multifaceted approach starting from the fundamental atomic-scale friction and mechanical control of specific single-asperity combinations, e.g., nanoclusters on layered materials, then scaling up to the meso/microscale of extended, occasionally lubricated, interfaces and driven trapped optical systems, and eventually up to the macroscale. Currently, this “hot” research field is leading to new technological advances in the area of engineering and materials science.

High-resolution atomic force microscopy can resolve the difference among B, C, and N atoms., Substituting heteroatoms into nanostructured graphene elements, such as graphene nanoribbons, offers the possibility for atomic engineering of electronic properties. To characterize these substitutions, functionalized atomic force microscopy (AFM)—a tool to directly resolve chemical structures—is one of the most promising tools, yet the chemical analysis of heteroatoms has been rarely performed. We synthesized multiple heteroatom-substituted graphene nanoribbons and showed that AFM can directly resolve elemental differences and can be correlated to the van der Waals radii, as well as the modulated local electron density caused by the substitution. This elemental-sensitive measurement takes an important step in the analysis of functionalized two-dimensional carbon materials.

Advances in organic chemistry allow the synthesis of large, complex and highly functionalized organic molecules having potential applications in optoelectronics, molecular electronics and organic solar cells. Their integration into devices as individual components or highly ordered thin-films is of paramount importance to address these future prospects. However, conventional sublimation techniques in vacuum are usually not applicable since large organic compounds are often non-volatile and decompose upon heating. Here, we prove by atomic force microscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy, the structural integrity of complex organic molecules deposited onto an Au(111) surface using electrospray ionisation deposition. High resolution AFM measurements with CO-terminated tips unambiguously reveal their successful transfer from solution to the gold surface in ultra-high vacuum without degradation of their chemical structures. Furthermore, the formation of molecular structures from small islands to large and highly-ordered self-assemblies of those fragile molecules is demonstrated, confirming the use of electrospray ionisation to promote also on-surface polymerization reactions of highly functionalized organic compounds, biological molecules or molecular magnets.

We have performed molecular dynamics simulations of nanomanipulation experiments on short single-stranded DNA chains elastically driven on a graphene surface. After a brief transient, reproducible stick–slip cycles are observed on chains made by 10 units of thymine, cytosine, adenine, and guanine. The cycles have the periodicity of the graphene substrate, and take place via an intermediate stage, appearing as a dip in the sawtooth variations of lateral force recorded while the chains are manipulated. Guanine presents remarkable differences from the other bases, since a lower number of nucleotides are prone to stick to the substrate in this case. Nevertheless, the magnitudes of static friction and lateral stiffness are similar for all chains (30 pN and 0.7 N/m per adsorbed nucleotide respectively).

Atomic force microscopy can image the hydrogen atoms of single molecules via very weak hydrogen bonding., The hydrogen atom—the smallest and most abundant atom—is of utmost importance in physics and chemistry. Although many analysis methods have been applied to its study, direct observation of hydrogen atoms in a single molecule remains largely unexplored. We use atomic force microscopy (AFM) to resolve the outermost hydrogen atoms of propellane molecules via very weak C═O⋅⋅⋅H–C hydrogen bonding just before the onset of Pauli repulsion. The direct measurement of the interaction with a hydrogen atom paves the way for the identification of three-dimensional molecules such as DNAs and polymers, building the capabilities of AFM toward quantitative probing of local chemical reactivity.

Resumen del trabajo presentado a la 13th European Conference on Surface Crystallography and Dynamics, celebrada en Donostia-San Sebastián (España) del 19 al 21 de junio de 2017., Quantum dot (QD) arrays on surfaces, generated through molecular self-assembly processes, have so far provided researchers with a vast playground to study the electronic properties of new and exotic 2D materials in ultra-high-vacuum (UHV) conditions. By selecting the proper molecular constituents (tectons) and substrate, long-range ordered, periodic and robust nanoporous networks have been achieved, ranging from hydrogen-bonded to metal-organic structures. Not only do they stand out as ideal templates for nanopatterning, but also as adequate candidates for studying fundamental physical phenomena such as confinement through the scattering of two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs). Indeed, confinement tunability has already been accomplished by varying the pore (i.e. quantum dot) dimensions, geometrical shape and molecule substrate interactions. In addition, inter-dot coupling has been shown by photoemission through the generation of new dispersive bands that can be modulated through thermodynamics and the condensation of guest elements (Xe atoms). To date, the modification of 2DEGs through inter-dot barrier width variations has not been experimentally demonstrated. Herein, sustained upon a combination of local scanning probes (STM/STS/AFM), angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and extended model calculations, we show that we can precisely engineer the inter-dot barrier width by substitution of a single atom in a haloaromatic compound. As a result, we tune the confinement properties at each nanopore affecting the degree of QD intercoupling both on bulk and thin Ag films alike. These findings pave the way to reach full control over 2DEGs with the prospect of becoming key for future electronic devices.

cited By 0; International audience; The surface diffusion of individual molecules is of paramount importance in self-assembly processes and catalytic processes. However, the fundamental understanding of molecule diffusion peculiarities considering conformations and adsorption sites remain poorly known at the atomic scale. Here, we probe the 4′-(4-tolyl)-2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine adsorbed on the Au(111) herringbone structure combining scanning tunneling microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Molecules are controllably translated by electrons excitations over the reconstruction, except at elbows acting as pinning centers. Experimental data supported by theoretical calculations show the formation of coordination bonds between the molecule and Au atoms of the surface. Using force spectroscopy, we quantify local variation of the surface potential and the lateral force required to move the molecule. We found an elevation of the diffusion barrier at elbows of the reconstruction of ∼100 meV compared to the rest of the surface.
