Sympathetic eruptions of solar prominences have been studied for decades, however, it is usually difficult to identify their causal links. Here we present two failed prominence eruptions on 26 October 2022 and explore their connections. Using stereoscopic observations, the south prominence (PRO-S) erupts with untwisting motions, flare ribbons occur underneath, and new connections are formed during the eruption. The north prominence (PRO-N) rises up along with PRO-S, and its upper part disappears due to catastrophic mass draining along an elongated structure after PRO-S failed eruption. We suggest that the eruption of PRO-S initiates due to a kink instability, further rises up, and fails to erupt due to reconnection with surrounding fields. The elongated structure connecting PRO-N overlies PRO-S, which causes the rising up of PRO-N along with PRO-S and mass drainage after PRO-S eruption. This paper presents three distinct wave trains that occurred on 2023 April 21: a broad quasi-periodic fast-propagating (QFP) wave train and a bi-directional narrow QFP wave train. The broad QFP wave train expands outward in a circular wavefront, while bi-directional narrow QFP wave trains propagate in the northward and southward directions, respectively. The concurrent presence of the wave trains offers a remarkable opportunity to investigate their respective triggering mechanisms. Measurement shows that the broad QFP wave train's speed is 300- 1100 km/s in different propagating directions. There is a significant difference in the speed of the bi-directional narrow QFP wave trains: the southward propagation achieves 1400 km/s, while the northward propagation only reaches about 550 km/s accompanied by a deceleration of about 1- 2 kms-2. Using the wavelet analysis, we find that the periodicity of the propagating wave trains in the southward and northward directions closely matches the quasi-periodic pulsations (QPPs) exhibited by the flares. Based on these results, the narrow QFP wave trains were most likely excited by the intermittent energy release in the accompanying flare. In contrast, the broad QFP wave train had a tight relationship with the erupting filament, probably attributed to the unwinding motion of the erupting filament or the leakage of the fast sausage wave train inside the filament body., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, accepted by ApJ

Solar prominences observed close to the limb commonly include a bright feature that, from the perspective of the observer, runs along the interface between itself and the underlying chromosphere. Despite several idealised models being proposed to explain the underlying physics, a more general approach remains outstanding. In this manuscript we demonstrate as a proof-of-concept the first steps in applying the Lightweaver radiative transfer framework's 2.5D extension to a `toy' model prominence + VAL3C chromosphere, inspired by recent 1.5D experiments that demonstrated a significant radiative chromosphere--prominence interaction. We find the radiative connection to be significant enough to enhance both the electron number density within the chromosphere, as well as its emergent intensity across a range of spectral lines in the vicinity of the filament absorption signature. Inclining the viewing angle from the vertical, we find these enhancements to become increasingly asymmetric and merge with a larger secondary enhancement sourced directly from the prominence underside. In wavelength, the enhancements are then found to be the largest in both magnitude and horizontal extent for the spectral line cores, decreasing into the line wings. Similar behaviour is found within new Chinese H$\alpha$ Solar Explorer (CHASE)/H$\alpha$ Imaging Spectrograph (HIS) observations, opening the door for subsequent statistical confirmations of the theoretical basis we develop here., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters (ApJL)

The eruption of solar filaments, also known as prominences appearing off-limb, is a common phenomenon in the solar atmosphere. It ejects massive plasma and high-energy particles into interplanetary space, disturbing the solar-terrestrial environment. It is vital to obtain the three-dimensional velocity fields of erupting filaments for space-weather predictions. We derive the three-dimensional kinematics of an off-limb prominence and an on-disk filament, respectively, using the full-disk spectral and imaging data detected by the Chinese H$\alpha$ Solar Explorer (CHASE). It is found that both the prominence and the filament experience a fast semicircle-shaped expansion at first. The prominence keeps propagating outward with an increasing velocity until escaping successfully, whereas the south leg of the prominence finally moves back to the Sun in a swirling manner. For the filament, the internal plasma falls back to the Sun associated with an anticlockwise rotation in the late ejection, matching the failed eruption without a coronal mass ejection. During the eruptions, both the prominence and the filament show material splitting along the line-of-sight direction, revealed by the bimodal H$\alpha$ spectral profiles. For the prominence, the splitting begins at the top and gradually spreads to almost the whole prominence with a fast blue-shift component and a slow red-shift component. The material splitting in the filament is more fragmental. As shown by the present results, the CHASE full-disk spectroscopic observations make it possible to systematically study the three-dimensional kinematics of solar filament eruptions., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

Partial eruptions of solar filaments are the typical representative of solar eruptive behavior diversity. Here we investigate a typical filament partial eruption event and present integrated evidence for configuration of the pre-eruption filament and its formation. The CHASE H$\alpha$ observations reveal structured Doppler velocity distribution within the pre-eruption filament, where distinct redshift only appeared in the east narrow part of the south filament region and then disappeared after the partial eruption while the north part dominated by blueshift remained. Combining the SDO, ASO-S observations, and NLFFF modeling results, we verify that there were two independent material flow systems within the pre-flare filament, whose magnetic topology is a special double-decker configuration consisting of two magnetic flux ropes (MFRs) with opposite magnetic twist. During the formation of this filament system, continuous magnetic flux cancellation and footpoint motion were observed around its north end. Therefore, we propose a new double-decker formation scenario that the two MFRs composing such double-decker configuration originated from two magnetic systems with different initial connections and opposite magnetic twist. Subsequent magnetic reconnection with surrounding newly-emerging fields resulted in the motion of footpoint of the upper MFR to the region around footpoint of the lower MFR, thus leading to eventual formation of the double-decker configuration consisting of two MFRs with similar footpoints but opposite signs of magnetic twist. In this paper, we present the imaging and spectroscopic observations of the simultaneous horizontal and vertical large-amplitude oscillation of a quiescent filament triggered by an EUV wave on 2022 October 02. Particularly, the filament oscillation involved winking phenomenon in Ha images and horizontal motions in EUV images. Originally, a filament and its overlying loops across AR 13110 and 13113 erupted with a highly inclined direction, resulting in an X1.0 flare and a non-radial CME. The fast lateral expansion of loops excited an EUV wave and the corresponding Moreton wave propagating northward. Once the EUV wavefront arrived at the quiescent filament, the filament began to oscillate coherently along the horizontal direction and the winking filament appeared concurrently in Ha images. The horizontal oscillation involved an initial amplitude of 10.2 Mm and a velocity amplitude of 46.5 km/s, lasting for 3 cycles with a period of 18.2 minutes and a damping time of 31.1 minutes. The maximum Doppler velocities of the oscillating filament are 18 km/s (redshift) and 24 km/s (blueshift), which was derived from the spectroscopic data provided by CHASE/HIS. The three-dimensional velocity of the oscillation is determined to be 50 km/s at an angle of 50 to the local photosphere plane. Based on the wave-filament interaction, the minimum energy of the EUV wave is estimated to be 2.7 10 20 J. Furthermore, this event provides evidence that Moreton wavesshould be excited by the highly inclined eruptions.

Filaments are one of the most common features in the solar atmosphere, and are of significance in solar, stellar and laboratory plasma physics. Using data from the Chinese H$\alpha$ Solar Explorer, the Solar Upper Transition Region Imager and the Solar Dynamics Observatory, we report on multiwavelength imaging and spectral observations of the activation of a small filament. The filament activation produces several localized dynamic brightenings, which are probably produced by internal reconnections of the braided magnetic fields in the filament. The filament expands during the activation and its threads reconnect with the ambient magnetic fields, which leads to the formation of hot arcades or loops overlying the filament. The thermal energy of each of these localized brightenings is estimated in the order of $10^{25}-10^{27} erg$ and the total energy is estimated to be $\sim1.77 \times 10^{28} erg$. Our observations demonstrate that the internal magnetic reconnections in the filament can lead to localized heating to the filament threads and prompt external reconnections with ambient corona structures, and thus could contribute to the energy and mass transferring into the corona.

Solar filaments often exhibit rotation and deflection during eruptions, which would significantly affect the geoeffectiveness of the corresponding coronal mass ejections (CMEs). Therefore, understanding the mechanisms that lead to such rotation and lateral displacement of filaments is a great concern to space weather forecasting. In this paper, we examine an intriguing filament eruption event observed by the Chinese H{\alpha} Solar Explorer (CHASE) and the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). The filament, which eventually evolves into a CME, exhibits significant lateral drifting during its rising. Moreover, the orientation of the CME flux rope axis deviates from that of the pre-eruptive filament observed in the source region. To investigate the physical processes behind these observations, we perform a data-constrained magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation. Many prominent observational features in the eruption are reproduced by our numerical model, including the morphology of the eruptive filament, eruption path, and flare ribbons. The simulation results reveal that the magnetic reconnection between the flux-rope leg and neighboring low-lying sheared arcades may be the primary mechanism responsible for the lateral drifting of the filament material. Such a reconnection geometry leads to flux-rope footpoint migration and a reconfiguration of its morphology. As a consequence, the filament material hosted in the flux rope drifts laterally, and the CME flux rope deviates from the pre-eruptive filament. The heating mechanisms of solar white-light flares remain unclear. We present an X1.0 white-light flare on 2022 October 2 (SOL2022-10-02T20:25) observed by the Chinese \ha\ Solar Explorer (CHASE) that provides two-dimensional spectra in the visible light for the full solar disk with a seeing-free condition. The flare shows a prominent enhancement of $\sim$40\% in the photospheric \fe\ line at 6569.2 \AA, and the nearby continuum also exhibits a maximum enhancement of $\sim$40\%. For the continuum near the \fe\ line at 6173 \AA\ from the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), it is enhanced up to $\sim$20\%. At the white-light kernels, the \fe\ line at 6569.2 \AA\ has a symmetric Gaussian profile that is still in absorption and the H$\alpha$ line at 6562.8 \AA\ displays a very broad emission profile with a central reversal plus a red or blue asymmetry. The white-light kernels are co-spatial with the microwave footpoint sources observed by the Expanded Owens Valley Solar Array (EOVSA) and the time profile of the white-light emission matches that of the hard X-ray emission above 30 keV from the Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) on Fermi. These facts indicate that the white-light emission is qualitatively related to a nonthermal electron beam. We also perform a radiative hydrodynamic simulation with the electron beam parameters constrained by the hard X-ray observations from Fermi/GBM. The result reveals that the white-light enhancement cannot be well explained by a pure electron-beam heating together with its induced radiative backwarming but may need additional heating sources such as \alfven\ waves., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, and 1 table

We investigate observational signatures of explosive chromospheric evaporation during a white-light flare (WLF) that occurred on 2022 August 27. Using the moment analysis, bisector techniques, and the Gaussian fitting method, red-shifted velocities of less than 20 km/s are detected in low-temperature spectral lines of Ha, C I and Si IV at the conjugated flare kernels, which could be regarded as downflows caused by chromospheric condensation. Blue-shifted velocities of about 30-40 km/s are found in the high-temperature line of Fe XXI, which can be interpreted as upflows driven by chromospheric evaporation. A nonthermal hard X-ray (HXR) source is co-spatial with one of the flare kernels, and the Doppler velocities are temporally correlated with the HXR fluxes. The nonthermal energy flux is estimated to be at least (1.3+-0.2)*10^10 erg/s/cm^2. The radiation enhancement at Fe I 6569.2 A and 6173 A suggests that the flare is a WLF. Moreover, the while-light emission at Fe I 6569.2 A is temporally and spatially correlated with the blue shift of Fe XXI line, suggesting that both the white-light enhancement and the chromospheric evaporation are triggered and driven by nonthermal electrons. In this paper, we carry out a detailed analysis of the M1.6 class eruptive flare occurring in NOAA active region 13078 on 2022 August 19. The flare is associated with a fast coronal mass ejection (CME) propagating in the southwest direction with an apparent speed of $\sim$926 km s$^{-1}$. Meanwhile, a shock wave is driven by the CME at the flank. The eruption of CME generates an extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) wave expanding outward from the flare site with an apparent speed of $\geq$200 km s$^{-1}$. As the EUV wave propagates eastward, it encounters and interacts with the low-lying adjacent coronal loops (ACLs), which are composed of two loops. The compression of EUV wave results in contraction, expansion, and transverse vertical oscillations of ACLs. The commencements of contraction are sequential from western to eastern footpoints and the contraction lasts for $\sim$15 minutes. The speeds of contraction lie in the range of 13$-$40 km s$^{-1}$ in 171 {\AA} and 8$-$54 km s$^{-1}$ in 193 {\AA}. A long, gradual expansion follows the contraction at lower speeds. Concurrent vertical oscillations are superposed on contraction and expansion of ACLs. The oscillations last for 2$-$9 cycles and the amplitudes are $\leq$4 Mm. The periods are between 3 to 12 minutes with an average value of 6.7 minutes. The results show rich dynamics of coronal loops., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The Si I 6560.58 \r{A} line in the H$\alpha$ blue wing is blended with a telluric absorption line from water vapor in ground-based observations. Recent observations with the space-based telescope CHASE provide a new window to study this line. We aim to study the Si I line statistically and to explore possible diagnostics. We select three scannings in the CHASE observations, and measure the equivalent width (EW) and the full width at half maximum (FWHM) for each pixel on the solar disk. We then calculate the theoretical EW and FWHM from the VALC model. An active region is also studied in particular for difference in the quiet Sun and the sunspots. The Si I line is formed at the bottom of the photosphere. The EW of this line increases from the disk center to $\mu$ = 0.2, and then decreases toward the solar limb, while the FWHM shows a monotonically increasing trend. Theoretically predicted EW agrees well with observations, while the predicted FWHM is far smaller due to the absence of unresolved turbulence in models. The macroturbulent velocity is estimated to be 2.80 km s$^{-1}$ at the disk center, and increases to 3.52 km s$^{-1}$ at $\mu$ = 0.2. We do not find any response to flare heating in current observations. Doppler shifts and line widths of the Si I 6560.58 \r{A} and Fe I 6569.21 \r{A} lines can be used to study the mass flows and turbulence of the different photospheric layers. In this Letter, we perform a detailed analysis of the M5.5-class eruptive flare occurring in active region 12929 on 2022 January 20. The eruption of a hot channel generates a fast coronal mass ejection (CME) and a dome-shaped extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) wave at speeds of 740$-$860 km s$^{-1}$. The CME is associated with a type II radio burst, implying that the EUV wave is a fast-mode shock wave. During the impulsive phase, the flare shows quasi-periodic pulsations (QPPs) in EUV, hard X-ray, and radio wavelengths. The periods of QPPs range from 18 s to 113 s, indicating that flare energy is released and nonthermal electrons are accelerated intermittently with multiple time scales. The interaction between the EUV wave and low-lying adjacent coronal loops (ACLs) results in contraction, expansion, and transverse vertical oscillation of ACLs. The speed of contraction in 171, 193, and 211 {\AA} is higher than that in 304 {\AA}. The periods of oscillation are 253 s and 275 s in 304 {\AA} and 171 {\AA}, respectively. A new scenario is proposed to explain the interaction. The equation that interprets the contraction and oscillation of the overlying coronal loops above a flare core can also interpret the expansion and oscillation of ACLs, suggesting that the two phenomena are the same in essence., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

The H{\alpha} line is an important optical line in solar observations containing the information from the photosphere to the chromosphere. To study the mechanisms of solar eruptions and the plasma dynamics in the lower atmosphere, the Chinese H{\alpha} Solar Explorer (CHASE) was launched into a Sun-synchronous orbit on October 14, 2021. The scientific payload of the CHASE satellite is the H{\alpha} Imaging Spectrograph (HIS). The CHASE/HIS acquires, for the first time, seeing-free H{\alpha} spectroscopic observations with high spectral and temporal resolutions. It consists of two observational modes. The raster scanning mode provides full-Sun or region-of-interest spectra at H{\alpha} (6559.7-6565.9 {\AA}) and Fe I (6567.8-6570.6 {\AA}) wavebands. The continuum imaging mode obtains full-Sun photospheric images at around 6689 {\AA}. In this paper, we present detailed calibration procedures for the CHASE/HIS science data, including the dark-field and flat-field correction, slit image curvature correction, wavelength and intensity calibration, and coordinate transformation. The Chinese H{\alpha} Solar Explorer (CHASE), dubbed "Xihe" - Goddess of the Sun, was launched on October 14, 2021 as the first solar space mission of China National Space Administration (CNSA). The CHASE mission is designed to test a newly developed satellite platform and to acquire the spectroscopic observations in the H{\alpha} waveband. The H{\alpha} Imaging Spectrograph (HIS) is the scientific payload of the CHASE satellite. It consists of two observational modes: raster scanning mode and continuum imaging mode. The raster scanning mode obtains full-Sun or region-of-interest spectral images from 6559.7 to 6565.9 {\AA} and from 6567.8 to 6570.6 {\AA} with 0.024 {\AA} pixel spectral resolution and 1 minute temporal resolution. The continuum imaging mode obtains photospheric images in continuum around 6689 {\AA} with the full width at half maximum of 13.4 {\AA}. The CHASE mission will advance our understanding of the dynamics of solar activity in the photosphere and chromosphere. Solar filaments are cold and dense materials situated in magnetic dips, which show distinct radiation characteristics compared to the surrounding coronal plasma. They are associated with coronal sheared and twisted magnetic field lines. However, the exact magnetic configuration supporting a filament material is not easy to be ascertained because of the absence of routine observations of the magnetic field inside filaments. Since many filaments lie above weak-field regions, it is nearly impossible to extrapolate their coronal magnetic structures by applying the traditional methods to noisy photospheric magnetograms, in particular the horizontal components. In this paper, we construct magnetic structures for some filaments with the regularized Biot--Savart laws and calculate their magnetic twists. Moreover, we make a parameter survey for the flux ropes of the Titov-Demoulin-modified model to explore the factors affecting the twist of a force-free magnetic flux rope. It is found that the twist of a force-free flux rope is proportional to its axial length to minor radius ratio, and is basically independent of the overlying background magnetic field strength. Thus, we infer that long quiescent filaments are likely to be supported by more twisted flux ropes than short active-region filaments, which is consistent with observations., Comment: 30 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

Multiple-ribbon flares are usually complex in their magnetic topologies and eruption mechanisms. In this paper, we investigate an X2.1 flare (SOL2015-03-11T16:22) that occurred in active region 12297 near the center of the solar disk by both potential and nonlinear force-free field models extrapolated with the data observed by the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) on board Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). We calculate the three-dimensional squashing degree distribution. The results reveal that there are two flux ropes in this active region, covered by a large scale hyperbolic flux tube (HFT), which is the intersection of quasi-separatrix layers with a null point embedded in it. When the background magnetic field diminishes due to the separation of the northwest dipole and the flux cancellation, the central flux rope rises up forming the two brightest central ribbons. It then squeezes the upper lying HFT structure to generate further brightenings. This very energetic flare with a complex shape is accompanied by a coronal mass ejection (CME). We adopt the simplified line-tied force-balance equation of the current ring model and assign the observed value of the decay index to the equation to simulate the acceleration profile of the CME in the early stage.
