ABSTRACT: Goose astrovirus (GAstV) has been widespread in China since 2016, causing significant growth inhibition and gout symptoms in goslings and leading to substantial economic losses in the goose industry. To better understand the epidemiological characteristics of GAstV in Guangdong Province, 682 samples were collected from geese with suspected GAstV infection across different regions of Guangdong Province from January 2022 to January 2024. Virus isolation, identification, and genetic evolution analysis were performed. The results showed that all samples were GAstV positive, with 52.64% co-infected with GAstV-1 and GAstV-2, and 42.38% positive for GAstV-2 alone, indicating that GAstV-2 remains the most prevalent subtype. Additionally, three GAstV isolates were identified using molecular detection, immunofluorescence, and transmission electron microscopy on LMH cells or goose embryos. Compared with GDYJ2304 and other reported GAstV-2 strains, the ORF2 region of the GDYJ2210 isolates lacked 3 bases, and the replication ability of GDYJ2210 was significantly higher than that of GDYJ2304. Whole genome sequence alignment and genetic evolution analysis revealed that the GDFS2209 isolate was located in the GAstV-1 branch, with a sequence similarity of 89.70 to 99.00% to GAstV-1 reference strains. The GDYJ2210 and GDYJ2304 isolates were located in the GAstV-2 branch, showing a sequence similarity of 96.80 to 98.90% to GAstV-2 reference strains. These results demonstrated that the GAstV isolates were highly similar to each other despite being prevalent in 5 different regions of Guangdong Province. These findings enhance the understanding of the genetic diversity and evolution of GAstV and may facilitate the development of effective preventive strategies.

ABSTRACT: The fatal gouty disease caused by goose astrovirus genotype 2 (GAstV-2) still seriously endangers the goose industry in China, causing great economic losses. However, research on its infection mechanism has progressed relatively slowly. VP70 is the structural protein of GAstV-2 and is closely related to virus invasion and replication. To better understand the role of VP70 during GAstV-2 infection, we used immunoprecipitation and mass spectrometry to identify host proteins that interact with VP70. Here, we report that cellular vimentin (VIM) is a host binding partner of VP70. Site-directed mutagenesis showed that amino acid residues 399 to 413 of VP70 interacted with VIM. Using reverse genetics, we found that VP70 mutation disrupts the interaction of VP70 with VIM, which is essential for viral replication. Overexpression of VIM significantly promoted GAstV-2 replication, while knockdown of VIM significantly inhibited GAstV-2 replication. Laser confocal microscopy showed that VP70 protein expression induced the rearrangement of VIM, gradually aggregating from the original uniform grid to the side of the nucleus, and aggregated the originally dispersed GAstV-2 RNA in VIM. This rearrangement was associated with increased VIM phosphorylation caused by GAstV-2. Meanwhile, blocking VIM rearrangement with acrylamide substantially inhibited viral replication. These results indicate that VIM interacts with VP70 and positively regulates GAstV-2 replication, and VIM–VP70 interaction and an intact VIM network are needed for GAstV-2 replication. This study provides a theoretical basis and novel perspective for the further characterization of the pathogenic mechanism of GAstV-2-induced gouty disease in goslings.

Abstract Two series of 3d‐Gd mixed‐metal phosphonate complexes with either only two gadolinium centers such as {Gd2}, {Ni2Gd2}, {Co4Gd2}, {Co8Gd2}, {Fe6Gd2}, and {Fe17Gd2} or more than two gadoliniums such as {Co8Gd4}, {Mn8Gd4}, {Co4Gd6}, {Mn4Gd6}, {Co6Gd8}, {Ni5Gd8}, {Ni6Gd6}, {Co8Gd8}, and {Mn9Gd9} have been solvothermally prepared and magnetothermally studied. The nearly identical environments of the Gd(III) dimer in the first series allow us to qualitatively analyze the effect of magnetic exchange coupling on the magnetocaloric effect (MCE). By doubling, tripling, or quadrupling of the Gd(III) centers, the second series of 3d‐Gd mixed‐metal complexes was built to further test the other effects of exchange couplings on MCE in more complicated circumstances. For the antiferromagnetic coupling cases, the results are nearly identical but diversify when topological spin frustrations are created, whose massive low‐lying excited spin states help enhance MCE. For presumably ferromagnetically coupled ones, albeit are rare in phosphonate complexes, they do exhibit excellent MCE. Meanwhile, the complexes with weakly coupled metal centers serve as excellent examples for studying the effect of molecular mass on MCE when its magnitude is expressed in the unit of Joule per kilogram, from which we can see the values are directly proportional to the percentage of the Gd(III) ions in molecular weight.

Abstract High‐performance and air‐stable single‐molecule magnets (SMMs) can offer great convenience for the fabrication of information storage devices. However, the controversial requisition of high stability and magnetic axiality is hard to balance for lanthanide‐based SMMs. Here, a family of dysprosium(III) crown ether complexes possessing hexagonal‐bipyramidal (pseudo‐D6h symmetry) local coordination geometry with tunable air stability and effective energy barrier for magnetization reversal (Ueff) are shown. The three complexes share the common formula of [Dy(18‐C‐6)L2][I3] (18‐C‐6 = 1,4,7,10,13,16‐hexaoxacyclooctadecane; L = I, 1; L = OtBu 2 and L = 1‐AdO 3). 1 is highly unstable in the air. 2 can survive in the air for a few minutes, while 3 remains unchanged in the air for more than 1 week. This is roughly in accordance with the percentage of buried volumes of the axial ligands. More strikingly, 2 and 3 show progressive enhancement of Ueff and 3 exhibits a record high Ueff of 2427(19) K, which significantly contributes to the 100 s blocking temperature up to 11 K for Yttrium‐diluted sample, setting a new benchmark for solid‐state air‐stable SMMs.

Abstract Background The predictive value of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) metabolic parameters for predicting AIP relapse is currently unknown. This study firstly explored the value of 18F-FDG PET/CT parameters as predictors of type 1 AIP relapse. Methods This multicenter retrospective cohort study analyzed 51 patients who received 18F-FDG PET/CT prior to treatment and did not receive maintenance therapy after remission. The study collected baseline characteristics and clinical data and conducted qualitative and semi-quantitative analysis of pancreatic lesions and extrapancreatic organs. The study used three thresholds to select the boundaries of pancreatic lesions to evaluate metabolic parameters, including the maximum standard uptake value (SUVmax), mean standard uptake value (SUVmean), total lesion glycolysis (TLG), metabolic tumor volume (MTV), and tumor-to-normal liver standard uptake value ratio (SUVR). Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify independent predictors and build a recurrence prediction model. The model was internally validated using the bootstrap method and a nomogram was created for clinical application. Results In the univariable analysis, the relapsed group showed higher levels of SUVmax (6.0 ± 1.6 vs. 5.2 ± 1.1; P = 0.047), SUVR (2.3 [2.0–3.0] vs. 2.0 [1.6–2.4]; P = 0.026), and TLG2.5 (234.5 ± 149.1 vs. 139.6 ± 102.5; P = 0.020) among the 18F-FDG PET metabolic parameters compared to the non-relapsed group. In the multivariable analysis, serum IgG4 (OR, 1.001; 95% CI, 1.000–1.002; P = 0.014) and TLG2.5 (OR, 1.007; 95% CI, 1.002–1.013; P = 0.012) were independent predictors associated with relapse of type 1 AIP. A receiver-operating characteristic curve of the predictive model with these two predictors demonstrated an area under the curve of 0.806. Conclusion 18F-FDG PET/CT metabolic parameters, particularly TLG2.5, are potential predictors for relapse in patients with type 1 AIP. A multiparameter model that includes IgG4 and TLG2.5 can enhance the ability to predict AIP relapse.

Abstract A 53‐year‐old man undergoing painless colonoscopy for long‐term diarrhea. After colonoscopy withdrawing to the sigmoid colon, a local perforation was found, about 3 cm in size, oval in shape. We used a two‐channel endoscope and grip to pull the edges of the intestinal wall on both sides of the perforation site to close together, and then repair the 3 cm oval perforation of the colon through multiple ordinary titanium clips. The patient had no obvious infection after surgery and recovered well after 1 month of follow‐up. Preliminary experience has shown that using multiple titanium clips under dual‐channel endoscope to zipper suture can effectively repair 3 cm iatrogenic colonic perforations.

Abstract The new intelligent factory introduces Time-Sensitive Network into industrial Ethernet to provide real time and deterministic guarantee communication for production system. Since the problem pertaining to data leakage or damage during transmission has increasingly become pronounced, security protection technology has been introduced, but this technology will bring about a delay in user response and a decline in the quality of service. Meanwhile, ensuring the deterministic mixed transmission of time-sensitive and large-bandwidth data traffic supported by the same switching device is a still challenging problem. Therefore, this study proposes a hybrid security scheduling scheme which combines Time-Aware Shaper and cycle specified queuing and forwarding (CSQF). Specifically, the mechanism first adopts various encryption methods for different traffic, and afterward, it reduces its resource occupation by adjusting the sampling period of the time-sensitive traffic. At the same time, it adopts CSQF to schedule the large-bandwidth data traffic, thereby improving the scheduling success rate. According to the experimental results, this scheme enhances network security and network scheduling success rate by up to 51%. The scheduling of mixed traffic in the Time-sensitive Network is realized securely and efficiently.

ABSTRACT: In recent years, the occurrence of fowl adenovirus 2 (FAdV-2) has been on the rise in China, posing a significant threat to the poultry industry. This study aimed to investigate the epidemiology, phylogenetic relationship, genomic characteristics, and pathogenicity of FAdV-2. The epidemiological analysis revealed the detection of multiple FAdV serotypes, including FAdV-1, FAdV-2, FAdV-3, FAdV-4, FAdV-8a, FAdV-8b, and FAdV-11 serotypes. Among them, FAdV-2 exhibited the highest proportion, accounting for 21.05% (8/38). The complete genomes of these 8 FAdV-2 strains were sequenced. Genetic evolution analysis indicated that these FAdV-2 strains formed a separate branch within the FAdV-D group, sharing 94.60 to 97.90% nucleotide similarity with the reference FAdV-2 and FAdV-11 strains. Notably, the recombination analysis revealed that 5 out of the 8 FAdV-2 strains, exhibited recombination events between FAdV-2 and FAdV-11. The recombination regions involved Hexon, Fiber, ORF19 genes and 3′ end. Furthermore, pathogenicity experiments demonstrated that recombinant FAdV-2 XX strain is capable of inducing mortality rate of 66.70% and causing more severe hepatitis hydropericardium syndrome (HHS) in 6-wk-old specific-pathogen-free chickens. These findings contribute to our understanding of the prevalence, genomic characteristics, and the pathogenicity of FAdV-2, providing foundations for FAdV-2 vaccine development.

Self-Biased Magnetic Pendulum Array (SBMPA) is an efficient and portable transmitter in ultralow frequency (ULF). The resonance frequency of SBMPA is affected by the magnetic field of the radially magnetized cylindrical permanent magnets. In order to calculate the resonance frequency, the magnetic field model of a single radially magnetized cylindrical permanent magnet is derived based on the concept of magnetic charge. Then, the influence of the demagnetizing field and external magnetic field on the magnetization of permanent magnets is analyzed, and the magnetic field model of SBMPA is established. The results of the magnetic field model are verified through simulation. The average deviation of magnetic field intensity is determined as 0.021%; thus, the magnetic field model and simulation have consistent results. Finally, the influence of the size and distance of permanent magnets on the resonance frequency is analyzed, which could provide theoretical guidance for the dynamic analysis of SBMPA.

The magnetic pendulum array (MPA) is a novel mechanical antenna for efficient and portable ultra-low-frequency transmission. Its natural frequency is affected by the magnetic field of its rectangular permanent magnets. In this work, the influence of the magnetization of a permanent magnet on the demagnetizing field and the magnetic field of other permanent magnets is analyzed to accurately calculate the natural frequency, and a magnetic field model of the rectangular permanent magnets in an MPA is established to improve the calculation accuracy. The consistency of the theoretical model results is verified through experiments and simulations. Finally, the effect of sizes and distances of the permanent magnets on the natural frequency of an MPA is analyzed, providing theoretical guidance for the dynamic analysis of “A Mechanically Based Antenna (AMEBA).” This research has significance and practical application value in the optimization of the magnetic field characteristics and natural frequency calculation methods for AMEBA.

Abstract Background Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) usually have higher blood viscosity attributed to high blood glucose that can decrease blood supply to the pancreas. A mild increase in blood pressure (BP) has been reported as a potential compensatory response that can maintain blood perfusion in the islet. However, how BP influences beta-cell function in T2DM subjects remains inconsistent. This study aimed to examine the relationship between BP and beta-cell function in patients with T2DM under different HbA1c levels. Methods This is a cross-sectional study of 615 T2DM patients, whose clinical data were extracted from hospital medical records. Beta-cell function was assessed by insulin secretion-sensitivity index-2 (ISSI2). Multivariable linear regression analysis and restricted cubic splines (RCS) analysis were performed to identify the association between systolic BP (SBP) and ISSI2. Mediation analysis was performed to determine whether higher SBP could reduce blood glucose by enhancing beta-cell function. Results After adjustment of potential confounders, in participants with HbA1c ≥ 10%, the SBP between 140 to150 mmHg had the highest log ISSI2 (b = 0.227, 95% CI 0.053–0.402), an association specific to participants with

Classical swine fever virus (CSFV), African swine fever virus (ASFV), and Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae (E. rhusiopathiae) remain endemic in many parts of China. Co-infections make distinguishing their clinical symptoms and pathological changes difficult. This study developed a multiplex real-time quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (multiplex qRT-PCR) that can simultaneously detect CSFV, ASFV, and E. rhusiopathiae. Three sets of primers and probes were designed to target the CSFV 5΄ untranslated region, ASFV p72 gene, and E. rhusiopathiae 16sRNA gene. Multiplex qRT-PCR for simultaneous differential detection of these three pathogens was developed after optimizing reaction parameters such as annealing temperature, primer and probe concentrations, amplification cycles, etc. The multiplex qRT–PCR could detect CSFV, ASFV, and E. rhusiopathiae simultaneously but could not amplify other porcine pathogens. The assay’s limit of detection (LOD) was 2.89 × 102 copies/μL for CSFV, ASFV, and E. rhusiopathiae. All correlation coefficients (R2) at higher than 0.99, and the amplification efficiency was 98, 90, and 84%, respectively. All correlation coefficients (R2) were higher than 0.99, and the efficacy of amplification was 84%. In a repeatability test utilizing standard recombinant plasmids, the intra- and inter-assay coefficients of variation (CVs) were less than 2.27 and 3.79 percent, respectively. Lastly, 150 clinical samples were used to evaluate the assay’s applicability in the field. The positive rates of CSFV, ASFV, and E. rhusiopathiae were 1.33%, 0, and 3.33%, respectively. And no co-infection among the three pathogens was found. The concordance rate between the multiplex qRT-PCR and single-plex commercial PCR kits reached 100%. This study’s multiplex qRT-PCR could provide a rapid, sensitive, and specific method for the simultaneous and differential detection of CSFV, ASFV, and E. rhusiopathiae.

Lumpy skin disease(LSD) is an animal infectious disease caused by Lumpy Skin Disease Virus(LSDV) that produces nodular lesions in cattle, and is widespread in East, South and Southeast Asian countries, causing serious economic losses to the local cattle industry. Currently, LSD is managed as a second-class animal disease in China. Since 2019, more than ten provinces in China have reported LSD epidemics, whose situation is very serious. At present, the superior cell for LSDV isolation and proliferation is Madin-Darby bovine kidney(MDBK). As a member of the Goat Pox Virus genus of the Poxviridae family, LSDV has a virus particle diameter about 290 nm × 270 nm, with two existence forms. The viral genome is complex and huge, about 151 kb, and contains more than 150 genes. Currently, only approximately 40 LSDV strains containing the whole genome sequence information are stored in the GenBank database. In addition to field wild strains, recombinant strains of field wild strains and vaccine strains have also emerged in some parts of Asia in recent years, and the prevalent recombinant strains are pathogenic, which poses new challenges for development of vaccine and preparation of prevention and control strategies for LSD in the future. The study mainly summarizes the etiology of LSD and the progress in the genome-wide study of LSDV strains in different regions of Africa, Europe and Asia, with a view to providing references for the prevention and control of LSD and further researches.

Three new species of the predaceous midges of genus Alluaudomyia Kieffer, 1913: A. flavinotum Wu & Li, sp. nov. of the maculipennis group, and A. reflexuralis Wu & Li, sp. nov. and A. limu Wu & Li, sp. nov. of the parva group, are described from the National Park of Hainan Tropical Rainforest, Hainan Island, China. Illustrations and COI barcodes (a fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1) of the three new species are also provided. Associations of male and female specimens of two species (A. reflexuralis Wu & Li, sp. nov. and A. limu Wu & Li, sp. nov.) are supported by DNA barcodes. The parva group is reported from China for the first time.

Lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) infection, accompanied by loss of hide quality, poor reproductive efficiency, consistent degenerative emaciation, and milk yield reduction of animals, causes severe economic implications in endemic zones. The heterologous attenuated goat pox (GTPV) vaccine (AV41 strain) was used in China to prevent LSDV infection. Only a few LSDV detection methods that distinguish LSDV from GTPV vaccine strains have been reported before. For simple, rapid, and specific detection of LSDV, the real-time recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) method was established with the specific primers and probes designed according to the conserved regions of ORF132 gene sequences. The assay could be finished within 20 min at a constant temperature (39 °C). This method had a limit of detection (LOD) of 15 copies/μL for LSDV and no cross-reaction with the nucleic acids of goat pox virus, infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus, Pasteurella multocida, and bovine healthy tissue. Furthermore, 43 clinical samples were detected by this method and the real-time PCR recommended by the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), with a kappa value, was 0.94. These results demonstrated that the real-time RPA method for detecting LSDV developed in this study was characterized by high sensitivity and specificity, which has wide application value in the clinical diagnosis and detection of LSDV in China.

Abstract Background Schistosomiasis japonica is a serious zoonotic parasitic disease. Preliminary studies have shown that the expression of microRNA-181a (miR-181a) in the liver, lung and spleen tissues of susceptible host BALB/c mice and resistant host reed vole (Microtus fortis) 10 days post-infection (dpi) with Schistosoma japonicum was significantly different from pre-infection levels. This difference suggests the possibility that miR-181a expression may be related to the regulation of the hosts’ early immune response against S. japonicum infection and thereby affect the development and survival of parasites in their final hosts. Methods BALB/c mice, M. fortis, Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)-deficient mice and wild-type mice (C57BL/6) were infected with S. japonicum, and differences in miR-181a expression between BALB/c mice and M. fortis over different time points post-infection (0, 3, 7, 10 and 14 dpi) were compared. MiR-181a mimic, miR-181a inhibitor and irrelevant miRNA, as well as lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a TLR4 receptor ligand, were used to transfect mouse RAW264.7 macrophages. The expression levels of the TLR4 pathway-related cytokines interleukin (IL)-1β, tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) and IL-6 were detected by quantitative PCR analysis. Results The expression of miR-181a was significantly upregulated in the serum and liver of mice infected with S. japonicum and downregulated in the serum and liver of M. fortis. T-helper cell (Th1)-type cytokines, such as TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-1β, and Th2-type cytokines, such as IL-10 and IL-4, were differentially expressed in M. fortis and BALB/c mice in the early stage of infection. The expression level of miR-181a in the serum was threefold higher in TLR4-deficient mice than in wild-type mice 10 dpi with S. japonicum. The expression of IL-1β, TNF-α and IL-6 decreased in RAW264.7 cells transfected with miR-181a mimic and increased in cells transfected with miR-181a inhibitor. miR-181a expression was downregulated and the expressions of TLR4 and three TLR4 pathway-related cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α) were upregulated in RAW264.7 macrophages stimulated with the TLR4 receptor ligand LPS. Conclusion These results suggest the possibility of mutual regulation between miR-181a and the TLR4 signaling pathway during S. japonicum infection. miR-181a may regulate the expression of pro-inflammatory factors through the TLR4 receptor pathway and participate in the immunomodulatory effect of anti-S. japonicum infection. Background and aimThe number of elderly patients with biliary stones is increasing. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiography (ERCP) is considered to be an effective treatment for biliary stones. Having a sound knowledge of the risk factors can help reduce the incidence and severity of complications for ERCP. Furthermore, limited research has been published on patients aged over 85 years undergoing endoscopic biliary stone removal. This study aims to determine the risk factors that lead to complications of ERCP in patients over 85 years of age.MethodsThis was a single-center retrospective study. We analyzed 156 patients aged ≥ 85 years with biliary stones who underwent their first ERCP at Chinese PLA General Hospital from February 2002 to March 2021. Logistic regression models were employed to identify the independent risk factors for complications.ResultsA total of 13 patients (8.3%) had complications. Thereinto, pancreatitis, cholangitis, bleeding, and other complications occurred in 4 cases (2.6%), 1 cases (0.6%), 4 cases (2.6%), and 4 cases (2.6%), respectively. There was no perforation or death related to ERCP. Independent risk factors for complications were acute biliary pancreatitis (ABP) (P = 0.017) and Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) (P = 0.019). Abstract Background Endoscopic resection for large, laterally spreading tumors (LSTs) in the cecum is challenging. Here we report on the clinical outcomes of hybrid endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) in large cecal LSTs. Methods We retrospectively reviewed data from patients with cecal LSTs ≥ 2 cm who underwent ESD or hybrid ESD procedures between January of 2008 and June of 2019. We compared the baseline characteristics and clinical outcomes, including procedure time, the en bloc and complete resection rates, and adverse events. Results A total of 62 patients were enrolled in the study. There were 27 patients in the ESD group and 35 patients in the hybrid ESD group, respectively. Hybrid ESD was more used for lesions with submucosal fibrosis. No other significant differences were found in patient characteristics between the two groups. The hybrid ESD group had a significantly shorter procedure time compared with the ESD group (27.60 ± 17.21 vs. 52.63 ± 44.202 min, P = 0.001). The en bloc resection rate (77.1% vs. 81.5%, P = 0.677) and complete resection rate (71.4% vs. 81.5%, P = 0.359) of hybrid ESD were relatively lower than that of the ESD group in despite of no significant difference was found. The perforation and post-procedure bleeding rate (2.9% vs. 3.7%, P = 0.684) were similar between the two groups. One patient perforated during the ESD procedure, which was surgically treated. One patient in the hybrid ESD group experienced post-procedure bleeding, which was successfully treated with endoscopic hemostasis. Post-procedural fever and abdominal pain occurred in six patients in the ESD group and five patients in the hybrid ESD group. One patient in the ESD group experienced recurrence, which was endoscopically resected. Conclusion The results of this study indicate that hybrid ESD may be an alternative resection strategy for large cecal LSTs with submucosal fibrosis.

The horse gut is colonized by a rich and complex microbial community that has important roles in horse physiology, metabolism, nutrition, and immune functions. Fewer across-breed variations in horse gut microbial diversity have been illustrated. In this article, the gut microbiota of Thoroughbred, Mongolian, and Hybrid horses [first filial generation (F1) of Mongolian (maternal) and Thoroughbred (paternal)] were studied by second-generation high-throughput sequencing technology. Differences in gut microbiota composition and function between breeds were determined using diversity and functional prediction analysis. The alpha diversity analysis showed that Thoroughbred horses had a more abundant and diverse gut microbiota, while the diversity of gut microbiota in Hybrid horses was intermediate between Thoroughbred and Mongolian horses. Subsequent cluster analysis showed that Hybrid horses have a microbiota composition more similar to Mongolian horses. LEfSe analysis revealed that the bacterial biomarkers for Thoroughbred horses at the family level were Prevotellaceae, Rikenellaceae, Fibrobacteraceae, p_251_o5, Lactobacillaceae, and uncultured_bacterium_o_WCHB1_41; the bacterial biomarker for Mongolian horses was Planococcaceae; and the bacterial biomarkers for Hybrid horses were Moraxellaceae, Enterobacteriaceae, and Ruminococcaceae. The functional prediction results indicated that the metabolic pathways differ significantly between the breeds. Regarding metabolism, the Hybrid horses had the lowest proportion of the carbohydrate metabolic pathways, while the energy metabolic pathway had the highest proportion. The abundance ratios of the remaining eight metabolic pathways in Hybrid horses were between Thoroughbred and Mongolian horses. In conclusion, the results of this study showed an association between horse breeds and gut microbiota.

Abstract Periodical silver nanoparticle (NP) arrays were fabricated by magnetron sputtering method with anodic aluminum oxide templates to enhance the UV light emission from ZnO by the surface plasmon resonance effect. Theoretical simulations indicated that the surface plasmon resonance wavelength depended on the diameter and space of Ag NP arrays. By introducing Ag NP arrays with the diameter of 40 nm and space of 100 nm, the photoluminescence intensity of the near band-edge emission from ZnO was twofold enhanced. Time-resolved photoluminescence measurement and energy band analysis indicated that the UV light emission enhancement was attributed to the coupling between the surface plasmons in Ag NP arrays and the excitons in ZnO with the improved spontaneous emission rate and enhanced local electromagnetic fields.

Abstract Background Prediabetes has become a pandemic. This study aimed to identify a better predictor for the incidence of prediabetes, which we hypothesize to be the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index, a simplified insulin resistance index. We compared its predictive value with the other common risk factors of prediabetes. Methods The participants of this analysis were derived from the Risk Evaluation of cAncers in Chinese diabeTic Individuals: a lONgitudinal (REACTION) study. A total of 4543 participants without initial prediabetes or diabetes were followed up for 3.25 years. Using multivariate logistic regression model, the associations between baseline obesity, lipid profiles and non-insulin-based insulin resistance indices with the incidence of prediabetes were analyzed. To assess which is better predictor for the incidence of prediabetes, the area under curves (AUCs) calculated from the receiver operating characteristic curve analyses were used to evaluate and compare with the predictive value of the different indices. Results During the 3.25 years, 1071 out of the 4543 participants developed prediabetes. Using the logistic regression analysis adjusted for some potential confounders, the risk of incidence of prediabetes increased 1.38 (1.28–1.48) fold for each 1–SD increment of TyG index. The predictive ability (assessed by AUCs) of TyG index for predicting prediabetes was 0.60 (0.58–0.62), which was superior to the indices of obesity, lipid profiles and other non-insulin-based insulin resistance indices. Although the predictive ability of the TyG index was overall similar to fasting plasma glucose (FPG) (P = 0.4340), TyG index trended higher than FPG in females (0.62 (0.59–0.64) vs. 0.59 (0.57–0.61), P = 0.0872) and obese subjects (0.59 (0.57–0.62) vs. 0.57 (0.54–0.59), P = 0.1313). Peanut protein is easily digested and absorbed by the human body, and peanut tofu does not contain flatulence factors and beany flour. However, at present, there is no industrial preparation process of peanut tofu, whereas the quality of tofu prepared by different peanut varieties is quite different. This study established an industrial feasible production process of peanut tofu and optimized the key process that regulates its quality. Compared with the existing method, the production time is reduced by 53.80%, therefore the daily production output is increased by 183.33%. The chemical properties of 26 peanut varieties and the quality characteristics of tofu prepared from these 26 varieties were determined. The peanut varieties were classified based on the quality characteristics of tofu using the hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) method, out of which 7 varieties were screened out which were suitable for preparing peanut tofu. Introduction: Glomerular hyperfiltration (GHF) is an early kidney injury. We investigated whether GHF is associated with arterial stiffness expressed by increase of brachial–ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) and pulse pressure (PP), and whether the coexistence of GHF and abnormal metabolism increases the risk of arterial stiffness.Methods: In this prospective cohort study, 2,133 non-chronic kidney disease (CKD) participants aged ≥40 years were followed for a mean period of 3.3 years. The extent of arterial stiffness was expressed by measures of baPWV and PP. GHF was defined as eGFR exceeding the age- and sex-specific 90th percentile. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to assess the association between GHF/abnormal metabolism and increased baPWV/PP. The interaction indexes of GHF and abnormal metabolism on arterial stiffness were calculated based on the OR in a multivariate logistic regression model.Results: GHF alone was not associated with increased baPWV or PP in all participants in this study. However, when GHF coexisted with abnormal metabolism, the risk of increased PP increased 3.23-fold [OR = 3.23(1.47–7.13)] compared with participants with normal filtration and normal metabolism, in which the interaction accounted for 55.1% of the total effect and 79.8% of the effect from GHF and abnormal metabolism. After subtracting the independent effects of GHF and abnormal metabolism, their combined effect still resulted in a 1.78-fold increase in PP.Conclusion: GHF could interact with abnormal metabolism to significantly enhance arterial stiffness. Since abnormal metabolism commonly exists in the general population, even slight changes in renal function should be distinguished to prevent arterial stiffness risk.

Pigs are the main host of Seneca Valley virus (SVV), previously known as Senecavirus A (SVA). Pigs affected by SVV have vesicles in the nose, hooves, and limp and may cause death in some severe cases. Occasionally, SVV has also been detected in mice, houseflies, environmental equipment, and corridors in pig farms. Moreover, it was successfully isolated from mouse tissue samples. In this study, an SVV strain (SVA/GD/China/2018) was isolated from a buffalo with mouth ulcers in the Guangdong province of China using seven mammalian cell lines (including BHK-21, NA, PK-15, ST, Vero, Marc-145, and MDBK). The genome of SVA/GD/China/2018 consists of 7,276 nucleotides. Multiple-sequence alignment showed that SVA/GD/China/2018 shared the highest nucleotide similarity (99.1%) with one wild boar-origin SVV strain (Sichuan HS-01) from the Sichuan province of China. Genetic analysis revealed that SVA/GD/China/2018 clustered with those porcine-origin SVV strains. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of SVV infection in buffalo, which might expand the host range of the virus. Surveillance should be expanded, and clinical significance of SVV needs to be further evaluated in cattle.

Background: Both baseline blood pressure (BP) and cumulative BP have been used to estimate cardiovascular event (CVE) risk of higher BP, but which one is more reliable for recommendation to routine clinical practice is unclear.Methods: In this prospective study, conducted in the Kailuan community of Tanshan City, China, a total of 95,702 participants free of CVEs at baseline (2006–2007) were included and followed up until 2017. Time-weighted cumulative BP that expresses the extent of cumulative BP exposure is defined as the sum of the mean of two consecutive systolic or diastolic BP times the interval between the two determinations, then normalized by the total follow-up duration. Incident CVEs during 2006–2017 were confirmed by review of medical records. We performed a competing risk regression analysis to assess CVE risk of the different durations of higher BP exposure. ROC analysis was performed to assess the predictive value of higher BP on CVE occurrence.Results: We found that when the risk of higher BP on CVE occurrence was estimated based on time-weighted cumulative BP, the hazard ratios (HRs) increased with the increase in duration of higher BP exposure in each of the four BP groups:

Bovine rhinitis B virus (BRBV) is an emerging viral species in the genus Aphthovirus, family Picornaviridae. Studies suggested that BRBV was considered a potential etiological agent of bovine respiratory disease complex (BRDC). BRBV has been reported in the United States, Sweden, Canada, Japan, and Mexico. However, little information of BRBV was available in China. In this study, we performed viral metagenomic analysis in a calf with respiratory disease. The results showed high abundance (3.85) of BRBV nucleotide and 248 mapped reads in calf samples. Online BLASTn analysis showed that three contigs of those had the highest nucleotide similarity (95%) with one Swedish BRBV isolate (BRBV_SWE1, GenBank accession no. KY432299). To identify the genome characterization of the Chinese BRBV isolate (designated CHN1), six couples of overlapping RT-PCR primers were designed according to genome sequences of BRBV_SWE1. Through gene cloning and splicing, we obtained the genome information of CHN1, possessing 7,465 nucleotides (46.6% G+C). Although CHN1 had the highest nucleotide similarity (95.1%) with BRBV_SWE1, one 11-nucleotide (ACATTTGTTGT) deletion occurred in the 5′ untranslated region compared to SWE1. Phylogenetic analysis showed that CHN1 clustered together with BRBV_SWE1, and far from other BRBV isolates. This study recorded the first discovery of BRBV infection in China. Further investigation should be made in order to evaluate the infection status and epidemiological significance of BRBV in China.

Summary: Ten lanthanacarborane complexes were synthesized to study the rare B−Hδ−∙∙∙Mn+ inverse hydrogen bonds (IHBs). The average bonding energy of B−Hδ−∙∙∙Ln3+ is theoretically determined to be larger than 24 kJ/mol, which is comparable to moderately strong hydrogen bonds (21–56 kJ/mol). In addition to NMR and IR, magnetometer was used to study the exchange-coupling interaction via such B−Hδ−∙∙∙Ln3+ IHBs in detail, and the coupling constant is determined to be −2.0 cm−1, which is strong enough to compare with single-atom bridged dysprosium(III) complexes. Two imidazolin-iminato incorporated complexes have shown energy barrier for magnetization reversal larger than 1000 K, and the exchange-biasing effects are evident. Moreover, the bonding strengths of B−Hδ−∙∙∙Mn+ IHBs are cation-dependent. If M = Na, the B−Hδ−∙∙∙Na+ bonding energy is reduced to 14 kJ/mol, and the dimerization process is no longer reversible. The exchange-biasing effect is also disappeared. We believe such a finding extends our knowledge of IHBs.

Bovine rhinitis B virus (BRBV) has been frequently identified in cattle diagnosed with bovine respiratory disease complex (BRDC) in recent years, suggesting its potential contribution to BRDC. The goal of this study was to develop a TaqMan-based real-time quantitative RT-PCR assay for efficient BRBV detection. A pair of primers and a probe were designed based on the 3D gene of the BRBV genome. The assay was specific for BRBV and able to exclude bovine rhinitis A virus, foot-and-mouth disease virus and Senecavirus A. The limit of detection of the assay was 4.46 copies per reaction. A standard curve was plotted, with a coefficient of determination of 0.999 in the concentration range of 100-108 copies/μl. The reproducibility of the assay was acceptable, with the standard deviations of cycle threshold values lower than 1.00 in both intra- and inter-assay. Of 200 samples collected from 150 head of cattle in recent years in China, 11% (22/200) of the samples tested positive in the assay, i.e., 4.6% (7/150) of the cattle were BRBV positive. This study provides an efficient diagnostic tool for the epidemiological investigations of BRBV.

Summary: The hippocampus is one of two niches in the mammalian brain with persistent neurogenesis into adulthood. The neurogenic capacity of hippocampal neural stem cells (NSCs) declines with age, but the molecular mechanisms of this process remain unknown. In this study, we find that fibroblast growth factor 13 (FGF13) is essential for the post-natal neurogenesis in mouse hippocampus, and FGF13 deficiency impairs learning and memory. In particular, we find that FGF13A, the nuclear isoform of FGF13, is involved in the maintenance of NSCs and the suppression of neuronal differentiation during post-natal hippocampal development. Furthermore, we find that FGF13A interacts with ARID1B, a unit of Brahma-associated factor chromatin remodeling complex, and suppresses the expression of neuron differentiation-associated genes through chromatin modification. Our results suggest that FGF13A is an important regulator for maintaining the self-renewal and neurogenic capacity of NSCs in post-natal hippocampus, revealing an epigenomic regulatory function of FGFs in neurogenesis.

Abstract Background Yellow cattle and water buffalo are important natural reservoir hosts and the main transmission sources of Schistosoma japonicum in endemic areas of China. The worms from the two hosts have marked differences in general worm morphology and ultrastructure, gene transcription and protein expression profiles. Results To investigate microRNAs (miRNAs) involved in the regulation of schistosome development and survival, we compared miRNA expression profiles of adult schistosomes derived from yellow cattle and water buffalo by using high-throughput sequencing with Illumina Hiseq Xten. Schistosoma japonicum from water buffalo and yellow cattle yielded 63.78 million and 63.21 million reads, respectively, of which nearly 50% and 49% could be mapped to selected miRNAs in miRbase. A total of 206 miRNAs were identified, namely 79 previously annotated miRNAs of S. japonicum and 127 miRNAs that matched with the S. japonicum genome and were highly similar to the annotated miRNAs from other organisms. Among the 79 miRNAs, five (sja-miR-124-3p, sja-miR-219-5p, sja-miR-2e-3p, sja-miR-7-3p and sja-miR-3490) were significantly upregulated in the schistosomes from water buffalo compared with those from yellow cattle. A total of 268 potential target genes were predicted for these five differentially expressed miRNAs. Eleven differentially expressed targets were confirmed by qRT-PCR among 15 tested targets, one of which was further validated through dual-luciferase reporter assay. Among the 127 ‘possible’ S. japonicum miRNAs, ten were significantly differentially expressed in the schistosomes from these two hosts. Conclusions These results highlight the important roles of miRNAs in regulating the development and survival of schistosomes in water buffalo and yellow cattle and facilitate understanding of the miRNA regulatory mechanisms in schistosomes derived from different susceptible hosts.

Summary: Unpaired electrons which are essential for organic radicals and magnetic materials are hardly to align parallel, especially upon the increasing of spin numbers. Here, we show that the antiferromagnetic interaction in the largest Cr(III)-RE (rare earth) cluster {Cr10RE18} leads to 96 parallel electrons, forming a ground spin state ST of 48 for RE = Gd. This is so far the third largest ground spin state achieved in one molecule. Moreover, by using the classical Monte Carlo simulation, the exchange coupling constants Jij can be determined. Spin dynamics simulation reveals that the strong Zeeman effects of 18 Gd(III) ions stabilize the ground ferrimagnetic state and hinder the magnetization reversals of these spins. In addition, the dysprosium(III) analog is an exchange-biasing single-molecule magnet. We believe that the ferrimagnetic approach and analytical protocol established in this work can be applied generally in constructing and analyzing giant spin molecules.
