Abstract: Reduced precipitation as well as warming may result in less snow accumulation in seasonally snow-covered areas, leading to lower minimum soil temperatures and more frequent and severe soil frosts. Therefore, plant stress is increased not only by drought in warmer months, but also by increased exposure to frost in cooler periods. We conducted a 4-year field experiment to evaluate the effects of diminished snowpack accumulation (through snow removal) and rainfall reduction (through rain-out shelters) on aboveground plant productivity, diversity and species composition of two subalpine grassland plant communities from the central region of the Spanish Pyrenees. We found that the snow removal treatment decreased minimum soil temperature by 0.5°C. Plant diversity decreased by 16 percent, although this effect was only observed in one of the grasslands studied. Aboveground primary productivity seemed to be unaffected. In contrast, we found that the rainfall reduction treatment negatively affected aboveground productivity of leguminous forb species, yet no effect on plant diversity was observed. Both treatments were important drivers of changes in plant species composition. Overall, our results suggest that the resilience of subalpine grasslands to snow cover removal and rainfall reduction treatments may depend on the specific community composition and dominant plant groups.

Abstract: Perennial plants create productive and biodiverse hotspots, known as fertile islands, beneath their canopies. These hotspots largely determine the structure and functioning of drylands worldwide. Despite their ubiquity, the factors controlling fertile islands under conditions of contrasting grazing by livestock, the most prevalent land use in drylands, remain virtually unknown. Here we evaluated the relative importance of grazing pressure and herbivore type, climate and plant functional traits on 24 soil physical and chemical attributes that represent proxies of key ecosystem services related to decomposition, soil fertility, and soil and water conservation. To do this, we conducted a standardized global survey of 288 plots at 88 sites in 25 countries worldwide. We show that aridity and plant traits are the major factors associated with the magnitude of plant effects on fertile islands in grazed drylands worldwide. Grazing pressure had little influence on the capacity of plants to support fertile islands. Taller and wider shrubs and grasses supported stronger island effects. Stable and functional soils tended to be linked to species-rich sites with taller plants. Together, our findings dispel the notion that grazing pressure or herbivore type are linked to the formation or intensification of fertile islands in drylands. Rather, our study suggests that changes in aridity, and processes that alter island identity and therefore plant traits, will have marked effects on how perennial plants support and maintain the functioning of drylands in a more arid and grazed world.

Abstract: Reduced precipitation as well as warming may result in less snow accumulation in seasonally snow-covered areas, leading to lower minimum soil temperatures and more frequent and severe soil frosts. Therefore, plant stress is increased not only by drought in warmer months, but also by increased exposure to frost in cooler periods. We conducted a 4-year field experiment to evaluate the effects of diminished snowpack accumulation (through snow removal) and rainfall reduction (through rain-out shelters) on aboveground plant productivity, diversity and species composition of two subalpine grassland plant communities from the central region of the Spanish Pyrenees. We found that the snow removal treatment decreased minimum soil temperature by 0.5°C. Plant diversity decreased by 16 percent, although this effect was only observed in one of the grasslands studied. Aboveground primary productivity seemed to be unaffected. In contrast, we found that the rainfall reduction treatment negatively affected aboveground productivity of leguminous forb species, yet no effect on plant diversity was observed. Both treatments were important drivers of changes in plant species composition. Overall, our results suggest that the resilience of subalpine grasslands to snow cover removal and rainfall reduction treatments may depend on the specific community composition and dominant plant groups.

Abstract: The extent of European sub-alpine grasslands and their associated ecosystem services are decreasing due to woody plant encroachment. Commonly used methods of woody vegetation suppression like prescribed burning or clearcutting usually cause little damage to belowground bud-banks, offering poor results against re-sprouting shrubs. In this study, we assessed the effects on vegetation and soil properties of two mechanical shrub removal methods for restoring sub-alpine grasslands colonized by the re-sprouting shrub Rosa sp. in the Central Spanish Pyrenees: a commonly used method based on clearcutting (Clearcutting); and a non-previously assessed method based on pulling shrubs off the soil to remove both the aerial and belowground bud-banks (Uprooting). We set a parallel experiment to test whether or not clustering Rosa sp. debris generated in Uprooting (which held many mature fruits) at certain grassland locations may promote colonization of new grassland spots by Rosa sp. seedlings. By the end of the study period, vegetation composition and structure was more similar to the reference grassland in Uprooting than in Clearcutting. Indeed, woody vegetation cover was 71 % smaller in Uprooting than in Clearcutting three years after shrub removal. Nevertheless, by the end of the study period, chemical and microbiological soil properties were slightly more similar to the reference grassland in Clearcutting than in Uprooting. Additionally, the results of our study showed that clustering unusually high number of mature fruits of Rosa sp. at certain grassland locations increased shrub seedling colonization in comparison with other areas of the reference grassland, indicating that operational planning needs to take into account shrub phenology. Abstract: Climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of short-term (~1 y) drought events—the most common duration of drought—globally. Yet the impact of this intensification of drought on ecosystem functioning remains poorly resolved. This is due in part to the widely disparate approaches ecologists have employed to study drought, variation in the severity and duration of drought studied, and differences among ecosystems in vegetation, edaphic and climatic attributes that can mediate drought impacts. To overcome these problems and better identify the factors that modulate drought responses, we used a coordinated distributed experiment to quantify the impact of short-term drought on grassland and shrubland ecosystems. With a standardized approach, we imposed ~a single year of drought at 100 sites on six continents. Here we show that loss of a foundational ecosystem function—aboveground net primary production (ANPP)—was 60% greater at sites that experienced statistically extreme drought (1-in-100-y event) vs. those sites where drought was nominal (historically more common) in magnitude (35% vs. 21%, respectively). This reduction in a key carbon cycle process with a single year of extreme drought greatly exceeds previously reported losses for grasslands and shrublands. Our global experiment also revealed high variability in drought response but that relative reductions in ANPP were greater in drier ecosystems and those with fewer plant species. Abstract: Significance: This paper introduces gypsum ecosystem research to southern Africa. It is the result of current joint efforts to compare African gypsum ecosystems with those in other parts of the world. We highlight the expansion of an international network through joint projects and training of young scientists. We propose a research agenda to sensitise the ecological community in Africa to the significance of life on gypsum and to demystify the existence of gypsum soil and associated ecosystems in southern Africa.

Abstract: Grazing represents the most extensive use of land worldwide. Yet its impacts on ecosystem services remain uncertain because pervasive interactions between grazing pressure, climate, soil properties, and biodiversity may occur but have never been addressed simultaneously. Using a standardized survey at 98 sites across six continents, we show that interactions between grazing pressure, climate, soil, and biodiversity are critical to explain the delivery of fundamental ecosystem services across drylands worldwide. Increasing grazing pressure reduced ecosystem service delivery in warmer and species-poor drylands, whereas positive effects of grazing were observed in colder and species-rich areas. Considering interactions between grazing and local abiotic and biotic factors is key for understanding the fate of dryland ecosystems under climate change and increasing human pressure. Abstract: Monitoring grazing activity and grasslands productivity has a great interest for the understanding of the feedback processes that regulate dynamic and conservation of grasslands. In this study we examined the spatiotemporal patterns of free foraging sheep and cattle (no shepherd) to understand how the two species adapt to the changes in food availability and quality in alpine and subalpine pastures during the summer. We used two vegetation indices derived from Sentinel 2 imagery (S2A) to characterize grassland: Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Normalized Difference Infrared Index (NDII). We hypothesized that sheep and cattle would show different spatiotemporal displacement patterns, which would also change over time with phenology of pasture. We tested this using movement data of tagged sheep and cattle with satellite GPS collars. Animals are yearly free ranging in the studied alpine and subalpine pastures since June to end of September, when they are moved to the shelters. According with optimal searching strategy we predicted that displacement distribution would approach to a random searching path when the forage is more nutritive and abundant, i.e., when livestock have just arrived to their summer pastures. As the summer advances, animals would change their searching paths to an auto-correlated random walk, because pastures lose nutritional quality and consequently food availability is smaller, also due to animal consumption in the grasslands. Our results confirmed that hypothesis and showed that average NDII, a proxy of both pasture quality and time of green-up in the summer pastures, influenced the spatiotemporal patterns during grazing activity of free ranging livestock. Abstract: [Background] Herbivory and extreme soils are drivers of plant evolution. Adaptation to extreme soils often implies substrate-specific traits, and resistance to herbivory involves tolerance or avoidance mechanisms. However, little research has been done on the effect of grazing on plant communities rich in edaphic endemics growing on extreme soils. A widespread study case is gypsum drylands, where livestock grazing often prevails. Despite their limiting conditions, gypsum soils host a unique and highly specialised flora, identified as a conservation priority., [Methods] We evaluated the effect of different grazing intensities on the assembly of perennial plant communities growing on gypsum soils. We considered the contribution of species gypsum affinity and key functional traits of species such as traits related to gypsum specialisation (leaf S accumulation) or traits related to plant tolerance to herbivory such as leaf C and N concentrations. The effect of grazing intensity on plant community indices (i.e., richness, diversity, community weighted-means (CWM) and functional diversity (FD) indices for each trait) were modelled using Generalised Linear Mixed Models (GLMM). We analysed the relative contribution of interspecific trait variation and intraspecific trait variation (ITV) in shifts of community index values., [Results] Livestock grazing may benefit gypsum plant specialists during community assembly, as species with high gypsum affinity, and high leaf S contents, were more likely to assemble in the most grazed plots. Grazing also promoted species with traits related to herbivory tolerance, as species with a rapid-growth strategy (high leaf N, low leaf C) were promoted under high grazing conditions. Species that ultimately formed gypsum plant communities had sufficient functional variability among individuals to cope with different grazing intensities, as intraspecific variability was the main component of species assembly for CWM values., [Conclusions] The positive effects of grazing on plant communities in gypsum soils indicate that livestock may be a key tool for the conservation of these edaphic endemics.

Abstract: [Background] Plants growing on extreme soils have mainly been described in relation to their adaptations to edaphic conditions, although herbivores may also be an important factor in these ecosystems. Gypsum soils occur in drylands often where livestock practices occur. However, it is unknown whether plant traits related to gypsum soil constraints are associated with resistance to herbivory., [Aims] In order to assess whether gypsum specialist species might be favoured at higher grazing levels and to detect the traits involved, we evaluated the responses of gypsum specialists vs. generalists to three intensities of livestock pressure., [Methods] We analysed the relative cover shifts of species along a livestock gradient, and variation in canopy height, canopy area, leaf carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and sulphur (S), specific leaf area (SLA) and leaf dry matter content (LDMC)., [Results] We found that gypsum-specialists responded by increasing or maintaining their cover at medium and high grazing pressure, whereas most generalists responded by decreasing it. Gypsum-specialists showed higher leaf S than generalists, regardless of grazing intensity. All species showed similar patterns for traits linked to loss of above-ground biomass when grazing increased., [Conclusions] Plant affinity to gypsum soils mediates vulnerability to grazing with foliar S possibly being a defence trait.

Abstract: Dynamics between plants and soil control important processes such as community succession, nutrient cycling or resilience to environmental change. Until now, most research on plant-soil interactions has focused on uni-directional and species-specific effects of plants on soil and vice-versa, under controlled-conditions experiments, but little is known about the direct and indirect interactions between the plant community and the underlying soil under field conditions. We investigated these interactions in a semi-arid shrubland from NE Spain. We sampled plant biomass, nitrogen availability in soil, soil microbial biomass C, soil water infiltration capacity, soil bulk density and quality of plant tissue. These parameters were related to each other to build a statistical plant soil interaction model that was analyzed through regression and Structural Equation Modeling analyses. This statistical model was hypothesized to reveal important mechanisms for community regulation. Plant biomass was fundamentally dependent on water infiltration capacity and microbial biomass C was fundamentally dependent on nitrogen availability. Plant biomass interacted indirectly with microbial biomass C by directly affecting nitrogen stock and quality of plant tissue. Similarly, plant biomass modulated the soil bulk density. We demonstrated that vegetation has a preeminent role in the regulation of biological processes in this ecosystem through control on nutrient status, microbial biomass and mechanical soil conditions. Conclusions extracted from this study can be valuable in restoring and conserving similar ecosystems at risk of disappearing due to desertification.

Abstract: Livestock grazing is an important element in ecosystem regulation since it may affect essential ecosystem functions, such as nutrient acquisition, organic matter decomposition, or litter accumulation in the soil. Overgrazing can threaten the conservation of ecosystems through excessive defoliation of plants or trampling. On the contrary, moderate grazing can have benefits on ecosystem dynamics by favoring nutrient cycling or the soil microbial activity. The aim of this study was to analyze these effects in a semi-arid Mediterranean shrubland located in NE Spain. We established six study sites including three grazing intensities, where we sampled vegetation biomass and soil properties: nitrogen content, microbial biomass, water infiltration capacity, porosity, and gypsum content. These parameters were included in a plant-soil interaction model tested through Structural Equation Modeling. Grazing had a direct negative effect on plant biomass (p < 0.01) and water infiltration capacity (p < 0.05) affecting soil nitrogen content (p < 0.001) and microbial biomass (p < 0.5), respectively. Infiltration capacity and porosity were primary drivers of plant biomass (p < 0.05, both cases), and plant biomass was the main contributor to the soil nitrogen pool. Microbial biomass was dependent on infiltration capacity (p < 0.05), porosity (p < 0.01), and nitrogen (p < 0.01). Grazing directly or indirectly affected the functioning of the ecosystem through effects on plant and soil attributes, which may result in changes in plant growth, litter decomposition, or plant nutrient acquisition. This study revealed that moderate grazing can maintain optimal ecosystem features and prevent ecosystem degradation.

Abstract: La productividad de los pastos depende de la fertilidad y actividad biológica del suelo, y a su vez, una adecuada conservación del suelo pasa por la protección que confiere la cobertura vegetal. Esto es especialmente importante en las zonas semiáridas, donde la alteración de las interacciones planta-suelo puede conducir a la desertificación. En este estudio hemos explorado la composición, abundancia (biomasa microbiana) y funcionalidad (actividad enzimática) del suelo en pastizales sobre sustrato yesífero del valle del Ebro y su relación con la cobertura vegetal. Para ello realizamos muestreos de vegetación y suelo a lo largo de gradientes de intensidad de pastoreo ovino, analizamos la composición y abundancia de las comunidades microbianas (análisis PLFA), y cuantificamos en laboratorio la actividad de las enzimas fosfatasa alcalina, ¿-glucosidasa y ureasa. Nuestros resultados mostraron que el pastoreo afectó a las comunidades microbianas del suelo y su actividad. La biomasa y actividad microbiana (principalmente la enzima ¿-glucosidasa) disminuyó significativamente en las zonas con intensidad elevada de pastoreo, y su composición se vio modificada, con un aumento de grupos resistentes al estrés. Encontramos interacción entre la cobertura vegetal y el pastoreo en el efecto sobre las comunidades microbianas, siendo este último mayor en zonas sin vegetación. El contenido de yeso en suelos fue también importante determinando la composición y disminuyendo su biomasa microbiana. En resumen, el pastoreo afectó de forma directa e indirecta a través de la vegetación a las comunidades microbianas de suelos yesíferos, donde el yeso podría conferir respuestas específicas al pastoreo.

Abstract: Grazing represents the most extensive use of land worldwide. Yet its impacts on ecosystem services remain uncertain because pervasive interactions between grazing pressure, climate, soil properties, and biodiversity may occur but have never been addressed simultaneously. Using a standardized survey at 98 sites across six continents, we show that interactions between grazing pressure, climate, soil, and biodiversity are critical to explain the delivery of fundamental ecosystem services across drylands worldwide. Increasing grazing pressure reduced ecosystem service delivery in warmer and species-poor drylands, whereas positive effects of grazing were observed in colder and species-rich areas. Considering interactions between grazing and local abiotic and biotic factors is key for understanding the fate of dryland ecosystems under climate change and increasing human pressure.

Abstract: Livestock grazing is an important element in ecosystem regulation since it may affect essential ecosystem functions, such as nutrient acquisition, organic matter decomposition, or litter accumulation in the soil. Overgrazing can threaten the conservation of ecosystems through excessive defoliation of plants or trampling. On the contrary, moderate grazing can have benefits on ecosystem dynamics by favoring nutrient cycling or the soil microbial activity. The aim of this study was to analyze these effects in a semi-arid Mediterranean shrubland located in NE Spain. We established six study sites including three grazing intensities, where we sampled vegetation biomass and soil properties: nitrogen content, microbial biomass, water infiltration capacity, porosity, and gypsum content. These parameters were included in a plant-soil interaction model tested through Structural Equation Modeling. Grazing had a direct negative effect on plant biomass (p < 0.01) and water infiltration capacity (p < 0.05) affecting soil nitrogen content (p < 0.001) and microbial biomass (p < 0.5), respectively. Infiltration capacity and porosity were primary drivers of plant biomass (p < 0.05, both cases), and plant biomass was the main contributor to the soil nitrogen pool. Microbial biomass was dependent on infiltration capacity (p < 0.05), porosity (p < 0.01), and nitrogen (p < 0.01). Grazing directly or indirectly affected the functioning of the ecosystem through effects on plant and soil attributes, which may result in changes in plant growth, litter decomposition, or plant nutrient acquisition. This study revealed that moderate grazing can maintain optimal ecosystem features and prevent ecosystem degradation.

40. Long transient response of vegetation dynamics after four millennia of anthropogenic impacts in an island ecosystem

Abstract: Agents of global change commonly have a higher impact on island ecosystem dynamics. In the Mediterranean region, those dynamics have historically been influenced by anthropogenic impacts, for example, the introduction of invasive species and overharvesting of resources. Here, we analysed the spatio-temporal dynamics of vegetation in sa Dragonera island, which experienced a large environmental change ca. 4000 years ago by the arrival of humans. Anthropogenic impacts, such as herbivory by goats and over-logging, ended in the 1970s, while in 2011 the site became the largest Mediterranean island where rats were eradicated. Invasive rats and goats played the ecological role of two endemic species, the cave goat and the giant dormouse, which inhabited the island for more than 5 million years and were rapidly extinct by humans. We used Landsat imagery to explore NDVI as a proxy of vegetation productivity over the years 1984–2021, orthophotos to assess changes in land and vegetation covers and historical plant inventories to study the dynamics in plant diversity. Results showed that those indicators steadily increased both in spring and in summer, while the noise around the trends was partially explained by climate variability. The regime shifts in the temporal dynamics of vegetation productivity suggested a transient from a perturbed to a non-perturbed stable state. Trends in successional dynamics, spatial self-organization and plant diversity also showed the same type of transient dynamics. Historical perturbations related to harvesting (mainly the synergies between goat browsing, burning and forest over-logging) were more important than rat eradication or the influence of climate to explain the vegetation dynamics. Abstract: Plants growing on extreme soils have mainly been described in relation to their adaptations to edaphic conditions, although herbivores may also be an important factor in these ecosystems. Gypsum soils occur in drylands often where livestock practices occur. However, it is unknown whether plant traits related to gypsum soil constraints are associated with resistance to herbivory. In order to assess whether gypsum specialist species might be favoured at higher grazing levels and to detect the traits involved, we evaluated the responses of gypsum specialists vs. generalists to three intensities of livestock pressure. We analysed the relative cover shifts of species along a livestock gradient, and variation in canopy height, canopy area, leaf carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and sulphur (S), specific leaf area (SLA) and leaf dry matter content (LDMC). We found that gypsum-specialists responded by increasing or maintaining their cover at medium and high grazing pressure, whereas most generalists responded by decreasing it. Gypsum-specialists showed higher leaf S than generalists, regardless of grazing intensity. All species showed similar patterns for traits linked to loss of above-ground biomass when grazing increased. Plant affinity to gypsum soils mediates vulnerability to grazing with foliar S possibly being a defence trait.

This is an open access article under the CC BY-NC-ND license, The surface of many European mountain grasslands is decreasing due to global change and extensive grazing stands out as a key tool for their conservation. Sound knowledge of grassland ecosystem functioning and its feedback processes is required to implement sustainable grazing management. This study aimed to understand the effect of different grazing intensities on herbivore-plant-soil feedbacks in Mediterranean mountain grasslands. We estimated spatial distribution of sheep grazing intensity using GPS technology in order to assess the effect of grazing pressure on vegetation and soil properties measured throughout the study area. Our results showed that grazing intensity ranged from 0.06 to 2.85 livestock units / ha, corresponding to a gradient of pasture utilisation rates varying from 2.38% to 45.60% of annual productivity from pasture. Increasing grazing pressure was associated with smaller relative cover and species richness of non-leguminous forbs, while the opposite trends were observed for graminoids. Forage had a greater concentration of N and smaller C:N ratio in more heavily grazed areas. Increasing grazing intensity was also associated with higher values of total soil N, NO3-, NH4+, soil organic carbon, microbial biomass C and activity of β-glucosidase. Higher litter quality was the main factor explaining greater content of soil organic matter, which favoured both soil microbes and plant productivity. Grazing induced changes in the plant community triggered positive hervibore-plant-soil feedbacks, as they ultimately improved forage quality and productivity, which significantly influenced the pasture preference of free-ranging domestic grazers. 48. Management and restoration of pastures and rangelands in the mediterranean basin from the northern and the southern perspective

Abstract: Pastoralism is a traditional land use in the Mediterranean region lasting for several thousands of years, where vegetation and animal communities are adapted to deal with summer drought periods and grazing pressure. There is a difference between the two shores of the Mediterranean in terms of pastoralism, it is more a mode of subsistence in the South, whereas in the North is a complementary activity each time less profitable. In addition, there is a clear North-South climatic gradient that determines rangelands productivity, carrying capacity, sustainable management and resilience. The environmental and socio-economical differences among the Northern and the Southern shores of the basin determine separated trends in both shores, leading to different management and future perspectives of rangelands. In addition to climate, differences in demographic pressure and socio-economical context influence rangeland status across the Mediterranean basin. Abandonment of grazing activities in North Mediterranean region vs. grazing intensification or even sedentarization in South Mediterranean region are the main socio-economical drivers, with important consequences on rangeland conservation. Despite regional differences, global warming affects the Mediterranean rangelands as a whole, increasing the shortage of water availability and the summer stress. These common perspective should promote that northern and southern rangeland managers and researchers learn from each other to deal with rangeland conservation, management and restoration. The latest research address pastoral production systems as a whole, and considers pastoral improvement techniques as a component in a holistic approach.
