- Abstract
Market-oriented urban development has reconfigured social life in Mexican metropolises in recent decades. The Atlixcáyotl-Lomas de Angelópolis corridor in Puebla illustrates how neoliberal policies stimulate the commodification of urban space, as the current physical, economic, and social arrangements in this corridor result from a state-led planning strategy that has mainly benefited private actors. The extended urban corridor—approximately eight miles long—in the southwest area of the metropolis was enabled by an ambitious regional plan in the 1990s that created a new crucial centrality known as
Angelópolis developed over a land reserve of approximately 1,000 ha of expropriated agrarian social land (ejidos ). The paper explores the role and impact of urban policies supposedly created for “public interest” to encourage the provision of affordable housing, green areas, public infrastructure, and social facilities, which, in contrast, have fostered elite residential horizontal and private developments, financial capital investments, and private facilities. To account for the presence of the names of Jesús, María and José, that is, the Holy Family in the community of San Pablito in Puebla, we will begin by discussing the introduction of these names then, we will address their manifestation in Mexican territory and subsequently shift our focus to their particular presence in San Pablito. Being three very old names due to their origin, and at the same time three of great importance, two aspects that draw our attention are: the first, the persistence of these names over time despite what trends predicted in 1970 about their possible disappearance (Boyd-Bowman 1970: 30); and the second, the disparity between them in their attribution, that is, José is by far more common than Jesús and the percentage of women named María exceeds the percentage of men with the name José. We can understand why the names have endured because the Catholic community remains the majority in Mexico, despite the constant growth of other religions. To explain the second phenomenon there are two concepts that allow us to elucidate it which are: latría and dulía.The corpus for this research is based on the information recorded in the birth books of the Civil Registry of Pahuatlán (municipal capital), during the period from 1874 to 1970, consisting of 3094 names, of which 1212 are, or include, the names: Jesús, María and/or José. The socionomastic perspective (Seide 2016, 2020) adopted allowed us to consider factors that provided meaning to the quantification and comparison of the data. Among others, variants of religious, social, political, and legal order. An example of this is the mandatory registration of births in the 40s and 50s and the consequent sanctions for those who did not comply (Peral 2023), which directly impacted the statistics.

Objective: Determine the capacities of producer organizations through the presence or absence of territorial governance mechanisms that distinguish the Localized Agrifood System (SIAL) in coffee production in the municipality of Cuetzalan del Progreso. Methodology: Qualitative research methods were applied, with semi-structured interviews as the primary technique, complemented by participant observation, documentary analysis, and fieldwork. Results: These indicate four categories of producer organization based on territorial governance, reflecting the maturity of relational systems among actors and their collective resistance capacity. Limitations: Lack of statistical, census, and cartographic information on coffee producers in the area. Conclusions: Four groups or types of producer organizations were identified within the coffee SIALs, each exhibiting varying levels of consolidation in their territorial governance processes. Consolidated producer organizations demonstrate greater resilience to climate variability and market prices and add more value to their production. In contrast, individual producers with smaller landholdings, who also work as day laborers or market other products, face higher levels of vulnerability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mexican metropolises, like many others in Latin America, are facing complex challenges connected to rapid urbanisation and population growth. Local governments struggle to provide the necessary infrastructure, housing, security, and basic services in a highly divided—socially and spatially—urban realm. Socio-spatial fragmentation in cities like Guadalajara and Puebla has existed since their foundations in the 16th century, as planning guidelines in the Laws of the Indies established differentiated rules for Spaniards and indigenous people. However, in recent decades, neoliberal planning and housing policy reforms, the consolidation of the real estate market, growing crime and violence, and socioeconomic disparities have contributed to more tangible forms of planned socio-spatial fragmentation, such as gated communities. This work discusses how policies and social practices have led to the normalisation of these fortified enclaves in the metropolises of Guadalajara and Puebla, whose capital cities are preparing to celebrate their 500th anniversaries in a context of conflict, loss of shared space, insecurity, and social inequalities. The work is based on a comprehensive review of national and local planning and housing policies, a historical and cartographic analysis of neighbourhood development, and qualitative research in Puebla over a decade, along with similar work in Guadalajara in the last couple of years. The relevance of this work lies in identifying the role of planning in the production of fragmented urban structures and visualising the possibilities for more inclusive solutions.

Chiltepin (Capsicum annuum var. glabriusculum) is a wild plant resource with a wide geographical distribution in Mexico and it is part of life in rural societies in the state of Puebla. The pungency of chiltepin is due to capsaicinoids, especially capsaicin and dihydrocapsaicin, which are of interest to the agricultural industry due to their insecticidal, bactericidal, and fungicidal effects; however, both a phytotoxic and promoter effects, have not been explored in in-vitro cultures of Arabidopsis thaliana. Therefore, the objective of this research was to evaluate the promoter and phytotoxic effect of ethanolic extracts of chiltepin from the Sierra Norte of Puebla, Mexico, on Arabidopsis thaliana crops based on their energy use evaluated by ecoexergy through neural networks. The ethanolic extract with seed (EECS) and without seed (EESS) was obtained by ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) of ripe fruits, using 96% ethanol. Capsaicin content was determined by UV/VIS spectrophotometry. EECS, EESS and EtOH extracts were added in different amounts to the MS medium in which 7-day-old Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings were grown. The concentrations at which a phytotoxic effect was observed after 120h were 28.37 mg/L and 35.62 mg/L, for EECS and EESS respectively. Exposure to a dose 10 times lower than the EC
50 , in the case of EECS, showed an increase in the calculated energy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

- Abstract
Photography is a standard communication method, but there is still a certain reluctance to use it as a research instrument. However, it could be a valuable tool in citizen science projects. In a community monitoring program for conservation, we incorporated long-term photography to record biodiversity. We equipped participants with a semi-professional digital camera and gave training on its use. Over a year, we saw an increase in the use of equipment, governance, and involvement; as for biodiversity, participants were able to record new species, discover new populations, and expand the distribution data of some species. POWER (Social sciences) , *PUBLIC sculpture , *SOCIAL influence , *PARADES ,GERMAN colonies ,SPANISH colonies ,INAUGURATION of United States presidents - Abstract
The First Centenary of México Independence was raised in a lavish way mainly in Mexico City, the event was of such magnitude that to celebrate it was organized in advance the various celebrations that would take place, the inauguration of sculptures and public buildings was proposed, dances, popular festivals, civic-military parades were organized and foreign nations with which the country had diplomatic relations were invited. In this article we want to emphasize that, although in the city of Puebla the events did not have the same magnitude, despite these different commemorative acts were carried out that made the Angelopolis overflow. And one of the conclusions we have reached is that for this to happen it was essential the collaboration of the Puebla society and to a large extent of the foreigners, who participated actively, mainly the members of the Spanish and German Colony who shone by organizing different events that allowed them to demonstrate their economic power and their social influence. The article analyzes how printed materials and newspapers in the city of Puebla supported the independence of Mexico between March and September 1821. It highlights the broad support of public opinion for the Plan of Iguala, which guaranteed respect for religion and allowed the exercise of rights without affecting the clergy and the army. The importance of debates and discussions in the written press during this period is emphasized, as well as the participation of Bishop Pérez Martínez and Colonel Iturbide in shaping public opinion. The Plan of Iguala, signed in Puebla in February 1821, received strong support from the educated elites and established the independence of Mexico and a moderate and constitutional monarchy. The article also mentions the Treaties of Córdoba, which recognized Mexico as an independent empire in August 1821. [Extracted from the article]

COFFEE , *AGRICULTURAL laborers , *COFFEE shops , *JOB satisfaction - Abstract
Between 2010-20, specialty cafés emerged in Mexico that led to a significant change to café work culture. Using protagonists' oral accounts, this article examines the rise of specialty café culture in two Mexican cities (Puebla City and Oaxaca City) and how and why specialty coffeeshop owners and baristas participated in this rise. The article argues that specialty café owners and baristas were crucial actors in the emergence of a specialty café culture in Mexico. Subsequently, specialty cafés offered new working conditions for baristas as well as owners. These conditions created jobs of passion, led to job-satisfaction for these urban workers, and facilitated positive service-work experiences. Overall, this paper exposes how specialty cafés grew, why people decided to participate in this growth and how they interpreted their participation in this experience. Moreover, this paper adds to the history and study of coffee by approaching café culture in a coffee-producing country and by prioritising the focus on café workers instead of agricultural labour. The purpose of the following investigation is to understand how children from the old historic district El Refugio (or Barrio del Refugio) of the city of Puebla (Mexico) live in public spaces and what their days and nights look like. It is extremely important to understand the reasons for their appropriation of various places in the city because it allows one to explore the conditions in which they manifest autonomous attitudes. This article is therefore not only about customs and culture, but also about everyday relationships with the environment. Children are also involved in the activities of the group Re Genera Espacio (RGE) and the team of Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (BUAP) in the development of all kinds of educational, artistic, and social activities. Among the most important results obtained is the observation that safety conditions are created by children in independent groups which move to other neighbourhoods (“barrios”), such as San Antonio and Santa Anita. Children make the street their space because they have important knowledge of the area.

[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article analyzes the political practices of the Santiago Tecali's caciques, as it is an exceptional case, to understand how they adapted their political strategies and practices in the case of cacicazgos that maintained their privileges over terrazgueros since the foundation of the República and Alcaldía Mayor, until the end of the colonial period. The system of power of the caciques did not necessarily lie in properties, but in their networks and political practices, such as their influence over other caciques of surrounding towns, their financing of divine worship and payment of tribute, which granted them privileges from the monarchy. CATHOLIC education - Abstract
Catholic Social Teaching in Latin America—portrayed in the documents of the Conference of Latin American Episcopal Conferences (Río, Medellín, Puebla, Santo Domingo, and Aparecida)—seeks to provide pastoral orientations to the social problems of the subcontinent, analyzing reality from a concrete theological perspective: the perspective of the poor. This article analyzes how Latin American problems and the way to diagnose them also appear in the pontifical documents of Pope Francis, especially in Evangelii Gaudium and Laudato Si' , applied to the world context. We conclude that the perspective of Latin American theology continues to be valid and relevant for the faithful throughout the world. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The objective of this study was to molecularly characterize Mexican isolates of T. cruzi obtained from infected triatomine bugs (the vectors of T. cruzi) and to evaluate their susceptibility to Nifurtimox (NFX). Methods: Three isolates obtained from Triatoma dimidiata (collected in the State of Veracruz) and one isolate obtained from Triatoma bassolsae (collected in the State of Puebla) were molecularly characterized and the expression of genes associated with natural resistance to NFX was analyzed by qPCR. Results: Molecular characterization by PCR showed that isolates Zn3, Zn5, and SRB1 belong to the DTU TcI, while isolate Sum3 belongs to TcIV. The latter was also confirmed by sequencing of mitochondrial genes. Isolate Zn5 was the most sensitive to treatment with NFX (IC50, 6.8 μM), isolates SRB1 and Zn3 were partially resistant (IC50, 12.8 μM and 12.7 μM) and isolate Sum3 showed a high degree of resistance to NFX (IC50, 21.4 µM). We also found an association between decreased NTR1 or OYE gene expression with NFX resistance. Conclusion: Our results also evidenced a high variability in the susceptibility to NFX of these T. cruzi isolates Central and Southeastern Mexico, suggesting the presence of naturally resistant isolates circulating in the country. These results have important implications for defining treatment policies for patients with Chagas disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Based on the thesis that the analysis of Mexican periodicals of the 19th century is excellently suited to a reconstruction of historical developments not only on a national, but also on regional and local levels, this article examines three newspapers of different political colours that were published in Puebla between 1820 and 1822, at the time of Mexico’s political disengagement from Spain: La Abeja Poblana, El Farol and El Amigo del Pueblo. Even though Puebla, along with the capital and Gudalajara, was an important place for the production of printed matter, the contribution of the newspapers published there to the independence process has not yet been evaluated. Accordingly, based on an analytical model for defining collective identity designs, this paper systematically examines all articles published in the aforementioned periodicals. This makes it possible, following the concept of «thick description» (Geertz), to record and evaluate in detail the historical circumstances of the Independencia and the political discourses prevailing at the time in the context of local and regional events. The focus is also on the genesis of those problems and contradictions that were to continue to have an impact long after 1821 in the course of the Mexican self-definition and nation-building.

Since its origin, the city of Puebla has had representative elements in its public spaces that have survived for a long time, they are ornamental and utilitarian objects which are landmarks of the city. Street furniture is a benchmark of identity too. All elements have legends, they are references that have given identity to streets and avenues. Natural elements also refer to a city’s identity, like trees. But the natural element that defined origin, trace and growth of the city is one of the least visible. In the sixties, the San Francisco River was piped, as a sign of the new modernity, and today it is a boulevard where thousands of cars pass. Thus, bridges and other types of elements that the population still remember, mainly the elderly, have been forgotten. In recent years, some initiatives have emerged to rescue the historical memory of daily life and the revaluation of representative objects of the city center, such as the Casa Analco Community Museum project, coordinated by the Faculty of Architecture of BUAP in collaboration with residents of the Analco neighborhood. This article discusses both the monuments, their relics, elements of nature that shape the city's identity, as well as the gradual loss of these symbols.

This study presents new findings of bison remains associated with alluvial plains in central Mexico dating back to the Late Pleistocene. These discoveries encompass eight sites in Hidalgo (Conejos, Ventoquipa, Barranca del Berrendo, Barranca Jagüey Viejo, Las Cajas, El Barrio, Monte Alegre, and San Gabriel Azteca) and two sites in Puebla (Barranca Policarpio and Barranca Xocoa). Biometrical analysis was conducted on the herein studied material, consisting of a horn core fragment, a skull fragment, two mandible fragments, five isolated teeth, and several postcranial remains. A comparative study with selected specimens indicates the presence of Bison antiquu s and B. cf. latifrons. The record represents the first reported occurrences of these species for the states of Hidalgo and Puebla respectively. Furthermore, the analysis of carbon (δ13C) and oxygen (δ18O) isotopes in tooth enamel apatite from the material of Hidalgo and Puebla was used to characterize the bison's diet and habitat, providing evidence of the flexible dietary regime observed in Pleistocene bison populations and that were common inhabitants of mixed environments. Body mass estimation of some individuals (average weight ≈ 450 kg) is in the lower limit of B. antiquus populations from the Late Pleistocene of North America. New knowledge about the geographical presence of Bison antiquus and B. cf. latifrons in central Mexico is provided. Comparison with another bison record of these species from North America suggests a biochronological delay between them, representing a younger time interval for Bison antiquus (maximum age at 50 ka), allowing us to biostratigraphically constrain some Mexican localities containing bison remains. • ++ Late Pleistocene Bison antiquus specimens from Hidalgo are described. • ++ Late Pleistocene Bison cf. latifrons was identified in Puebla. • ++ Both are recorded for first time in these states of central Mexico. • ++ Carbon (δ13C) and oxygen (δ18O) isotope analyses indicate a flexible dietary regime. • ++ Biochronologically, B. antiquus is younger than B. latifrons in North America.

Objective: The purpose of this research was to identify the sale value of homes in the metropolitan area of the city of Puebla, using the hedonic price technique to determine a model that takes into consideration relevant variables that explain the housing prices. Methodology: An overall problem is land mismanagement. The location of the homes can affect their price. A hedonic price model helps to determine the relative importance of the variables in the final price. This information provides an initial perspective to the people who are interested in acquiring a home in the study area. The model was built based on the information collected from 182 properties and it was analyzed using the SPSS software version 28.0.0.0. Results: The most significant variables that determine housing prices, which presented a multiple valuation coefficient of 64.3%. The effect of the variables on the housing value was determined by means of elasticities. Study Limitations: There were no limitations for this report. Conclusions: The following variables were significant: new home, number of bathrooms, built-up area, private security, distance to the downtown of Puebla, and distance to a park.

Odonates constitute an order of paleopteran insects important to ecosystems because their role as generalist predators and some of their species are considered bioindicators of the environmental quality. The establishment, maintenance and growth of scientific collections that include this group may encourage their research. To this end, we are making public the creation of the odonates collection (COD-UAEH) of the Biological Research Center of the Autonomous University of the State of Hidalgo is announced. This collection contains 1,180 adult individuals belonging to ten families, 43 genera and 104 species collected in different states of the country, but mainly in the states of Hidalgo and Puebla. The incorporation of immature states has not been undertaken yet. 54% of the specimens belong to the Anisoptera suborder, which is represented by the families Aeshnidae, Cordulegastridae, Gomphidae and Libellulidae, for 26 genera and 56 species. The remaining 46% belong to the suborder Zygoptera, which includes the families Calopterygidae, Coenagrionidae, Heteragrionidae, Lestidae, Thaumatoneuridae and Platystictidae, with 17 genera and 48 species. Every specimen included in the collection has been identified to the taxonomic level of species. It is worth mentioning that the collection contains the record of a female belonging to the Megaloprepus caerulatus (Drury, 1782) species, as well as a montage in cardboard of the extended wings build to make an easier photograph taking and the wing venation comparison required for the identification of genera. Athanasius Kircher (1602-1680) described in Musurgia universalis (1650) a device for automatic music composition called the Arca musarithmica, and at least three physical implementations of the Arca survive in the UK and the rest of Europe. While Kircher's general influence on the lettered elite of the Spanish Empire, including Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, has been well established, this article presents the first evidence that anyone in the realms of Spain actually tried to use the Arca. Two manuscript miscellanies --one created in Puebla around 1695 and the other in Madrid around 1785-- include abridged versions of the Arca musarithmica. The source from Puebla's Biblioteca Palafoxiana, I argue, constitutes a partial but functional implementation of the device --a fourth surviving Arca. The collection also opens a window into the preoccupations of Kircher enthusiasts in New Spain: it includes geometrical notes on trisecting the angle alongside accounting records for the Church's tithe tax (diezmos) and writings on engineering, alchemy, ancient chronology, architecture, and other topics that were seen at the time as aspects of mathematics. But if the Arca in 1690s Puebla furthered a quest for universal knowledge, the Madrid source from a century later reflects an amateur's bungling effort to make sense of Kircher's complex system, and suggests that by the end of the eighteenth century the Arca was seen more as a curiosity. This paper reviews the five General Conferences of the Latin American Episcopate held over the course of half a century, from the first one, held in Rio, until the most recent one in Aparecida. To facilitate the understanding of these Conferences, the theological context of each is recalled and some of the main points of their "Conclusions" are indicated. These Episcopal Assemblies prove that there is a specifically Latin American pastoral theology. Nonetheless, if before one had to prevent Eurocentric exaggerations, it is currently necessary that one avoid excessive Latin Americanism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

47. New Diabetes Mellitus Findings Has Been Reported by Investigators at Benemerita University Autonoma of Puebla (Application of Principal Component Regression In Mach-zehnder Interferometer Optical Fiber Sensors In Reflection Mode for Acetone...).
- Abstract
A recent study conducted at Benemerita University Autonoma of Puebla in Mexico has explored the use of principal component regression in Mach-Zehnder interferometer optical fiber sensors to detect acetone, a biomarker for diabetes mellitus, in human breath. Acetone is frequently found in concentrations of 1.8 ppm in diabetic patients. The research found that the limit of detection for acetone using principal component regression was approximately 1.5 ppm, which could potentially be used for diabetes mellitus detection through breath analysis. This study provides valuable insights into the application of new data analysis techniques for diabetes diagnosis. [Extracted from the article]

"Eco-symbiotic complementarity" refers to mechanisms of reciprocal support among people settled in different ecological zones to access zone-specific useful products. We evaluated eco-symbiotic complementarity and how socio-spatial marginality influences the exchange of natural products between Nahua communities in the municipality of Coyomeapan and the nearest markets in the Sierra Negra of Puebla, Mexico. Through ethnobotanical interviews, we documented 191 useful morphospecies of plants and fungi, 136 of them sold in the municipal market. β diversity analyses showed that most traded morphospecies were specific to the predominant vegetation type of the study communities. We established that plants, including cultivated crops, exhibit complementarity patterns by commercialization, while fungi do not through an examination of exchange networks. Communities' degree of marginalization influences their traded products specialization and the scope of their trade routes. The diversity of ecosystems favors a complementarity network that persists through the municipal market and increases the availability of resources for people inhabiting them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
