Abstract

The circular bioeconomy is increasingly recognized as a strategy to tackle natural resource constraints and environmental degradation. This paper examines the prospects of applying circular bioeconomy principles to drive economic growth in Indonesia's forestry sector. Using both quantitative and qualitative data, the study analyzes the sector through upstream, midstream, and downstream value chains. The findings indicate that integrating these principles can boost economic growth by fostering industrial development, innovation, added value, and job creation. In the upstream chain, sustainable forest management, planting, and conservation activities ensure raw material availability and create employment opportunities. The midstream chain sees the growth of creative industries focused on waste processing and logistics, driving innovation, added value, and job absorption. Downstream activities, such as repair, maintenance, refurbishment, upcycling, and rental services, also contribute to economic growth. For further economic development, the study highlights the importance of exploring technology-based activities like biorefineries and innovative product development. This integration at various stages of the value chain demonstrates that a circular bioeconomy can significantly contribute to sustainable economic growth in the Indonesian forestry sector.

Abstract

Tanjungpinang City is characterized as a coastal area with dense settlements around the port. The high mobility of the population led to the formation of new centers of activity heading towards the mainland. Integration in the use of resources is necessary for sustainable spatial planning. This study aims to: 1) analyze the pattern of land use change in Tanjungpinang City in 2010-2020; 2) analyze the suitability of land for residentials; 3) analyze the availability of residential development land; 4) predicting land use; 5) drawing up a residential development directive for 2030. Land use change was analyzed by the method of overlapping land use maps in 2010, 2015, and 2020. The suitability of land for residentials was analyzed by the evaluation method developed by FAO 2007, and several criteria were established for the availability of residential land. Land use change predictions for 2030 are analyzed by the Land Change Modeler (LCM). Furthermore, the preparation of direction for the development of settlements areas is based on land suitability, land availability, prediction of land use and spatial pattern. The results of the analysis obtained the type of land use that experienced the largest increase in area were urban residential buildings. Land of suitable land suitability class available for residential was obtained 6,300.73 ha. The prediction of land use in 2030) show that the largest increase in area also occurred in settlements land by 23.97% of the total area of Tanjungpinang City. The directive for the development of residential areas is focused on land that belongs to priority categories 1 and 2, in order to avoid disasters, land damage, and land disputes. It has created a specific feature called “desakota” where urban and rural systems are intermingled and cause socioeconomic and ecological conflicts. In order to deal with this issue, this study aims to explore the potential of peri-urban agriculture (PUA) to deliver multifunctional benefits and curb further urban sprawl. A multilevel study was applied and the results show that PUA has multiple functions on different ranges of areas that should be managed differently. Städtische Zersiedelung in asiatischen Megacities übt starken Druck auf deren landwirtschaftlich geprägte dicht besiedelte Randgebiete aus. Die sich daraus ergebende Vermischung urbaner und ländlicher Systeme wird als “desakota” bezeichnet, welche ökonomische, soziale und ökologische Konflikte mit sich bringt. Die vorliegende Studie widmet sich diesem Thema mit dem Ziel der Unteruschung des Potenzials einer stadtnahen Landwirtschaft (engl. peri-urban agriculture – PUA), multifunktionale Leistungen zu erbringen und einer weiteren Zersiedelung entgegenzuwirken. Ein Mehrebenenansatz wurde angewendet, dessen Ergebnisse zeigen, dass PUA vielfältige Funktionen innerhalb verschiedener Gebiete hat, die unterschiedlich verwaltet werden sollten.

Abstract

Urban expansion and urbanization have been continuing to grow rapidly, especially in Asian megacities. Greater Jakarta (Jabodetabek) has emerged as the world's second largest urban area, with a population of 28 million in 2010, where urban expansion has a significant impact on the local as well as the global environment. Efforts to control urban expansion must start from a clear understanding of its various driving forces at a local, regional, and global level. Studies of the interdependencies between these driving forces in the local spatial relationships in emerging Asian megacities remain limited. This study explores the driving forces of urban expansion in Jabodetabek by considering local spatial dependency and analyzes the spatial characteristics of this urbanized area as well as identifies spatial variations in the relationship between urban expansion and its driving forces by using Geographically Weighted Regression. The presented findings show that the driving forces affecting urban expansion in the Jabodetabek region vary spatially. Owing to the influence of the global and regional economies on Jabodetabek, we find that the demographic, infrastructural, and natural elements driving forces significantly affect urban expansion in this region according to location. Outside the core of this megacity, urban expansion in most areas is significantly affected by local demographic as well as infrastructural driving forces. Jakarta city, as the core of the Jabodetabek megacity, is becoming independent of these local driving forces, however, since it is now more characterized as a global city and thus tending to have more linkages with the world market.

Abstract

Urban and regional development needs space and land which then replaces the existence of natural space. The loss of natural space does not give negative impacts as long as it does not exceed ecological carrying capacity.Unfortunately, urban and regional development in Indonesia is dominated by economy motivation than ecology consideration. As a result, several natural disasters occurred such as flood, ground water depletion, land slides etc. Our research objective is to analyze land cover change from natural space to human activity space and several factors which cause it at 4 different regions: Malang Municipal, Batam Municipal, Pemalang Regency and Muaro Jambi Regency. Research result could be used as basic information for local government to arrange planning, use and control spatial change in each area. This research was conducted by using two different time data images with interval 10 years to get land cover change on each region and social economy data from National Statistic Bureau. The model was formulated by using forward stepwise multiple regressions and the result showed that each region has different factors which increase land cover change of natural space such as: (1) Malang Municipal was dominantly influenced by urban sprawl phenomenon, (2) Batam Municipal wasdominantly influenced by government policy to develop industry, (3) Pemalang Regency was dominantly influenced by appearance of several new growth poles, and (4) Muaro Jambi Regency was dominantly influenced by land necessity for agriculture activities.

36. Spatial Analysis of Socio-Economic Driving Factors of Food Expenditure Variation between Provinces in Indonesia.

Abstract

Food security has become one of the global challenges; therefore, monitoring food consumption is required. As food consumption is a resultant of food availability at an affordable price, food expenditure actually is a key indicator to assess food security policy. Particularly, the link of food expenditure with socio-economic factors based on the perspective of spatial connectivity should be understood as nowadays food supply and demand between regions are increasingly connected. This study aims to define socio-economic driving factors of food expenditure that considering spatial connectivity between provinces in Indonesia. Data of household food expenditure and socio-economic factors by province including urbanization level, economic growth, gross domestic regional product (GDRP) per capita, poverty severity index, and unemployment rate were used. The preliminary test on the spatial correlation of food expenditure showed a significant result; thus, a spatial regression approach was employed. The results showed that declining food expenditure did not simply indicate increasing prosperity. Larger income disparity among the poor has become crucial to detect lower food expenditure caused by a lack of income. In addition, the increasing unemployment rate was followed by increasing food expenditure. Despite economic growth, increasing GDRP per capita and urbanization contributing to declining food expenditure, both poverty and unemployment are the main issues that threaten household's ability to afford food. Furthermore, the effect of food expenditure in the neighboring region is also significant, but it shows a contradictory relationship as food expenditure in a region is decreasing when food expenditure in its neighbors is increasing, and vice versa. Therefore, reducing disparities in economic growth, GDRP per capita, urbanization, poverty, and unemployment rate between provinces is also crucial to support more equal food expenditure as well as to achieve the second goal of SDG's (Sustainable Development Goals) in improving food security.
