In 2017, the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) initiated a joint project with the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador, Quito (PUCE), to study the Machalilla culture, a cultural expression from the Ecuadorian coast that belongs to the Formative Period (4400 – 300 cal BC). Here we present the results of our excavations at the type-site with a focus on the presentation of the finds as well as their chronological classification. The data presented here include the first radiocarbon dates for the type-site, help refine our understanding of the material culture related to Machalilla, and confirm Estrada´s estimation that the site is single component and that its occupation dates back to the early period of the Machalilla culture., Journal of Global Archaeology, 2022

More than 100 years ago swedish ethnologist Erland Nordenskiöld pioneered in the archaeology of the bolivian amazon lowlands. At Mound Velarde, a prehispanic settlement located on the land of the Estancia San Miguelito, he made the first stratigraphic observations in Bolivia. A detailed report of his work was published in 1913 leaving one thing open: the exact location of the site. In October 2019, surveys carried out in the region using LIDAR (Light detection and ranging) made it possible to identify the site., e-Forschungsberichte, 3 (2020)

Journal of Global Archaeology, 2020, Der deutsche Archäologe Max Uhle (1856–1944) führte im Jahre 1896 am Fundort Pachacamac, südlich von Lima, die ersten stratigraphischen Grabungen in Peru durch. Die Ergebnisse dieser Arbeiten legte er in einer Monographie vor, die 1903 erschien und Uhles Ruf als einer der führenden Archäologen seiner Zeit im Andengebiet begründete. Der Monographie beigefügt war ein Gesamtplan des über 1 km2 großen Ruinengeländes im Maßstab 1:2000. Das Original dieses Plans galt als verschollen und wurde erst kürzlich durch Zufall im Nachlass des ekuadorianischen Wissenschaftlers und Politikers Jacinto Jijón y Caamaño (1890–1950) entdeckt. Dieser Artikel beschreibt kurz die 25 großformatigen Blätter, aus denen sich der Originalplan zusammensetzt. Sein Hauptzweck besteht jedoch darin, der Frage nachzugehen, warum sich diese Blätter heute im Nachlass von Jijón y Caamaño befinden. Interessante Einblicke bietet hierzu die Korrespondenz zwischen den beiden Forschern, die in ihren jeweiligen Nachlässen aufbewahrt wird., The map of Pachacamac made by the German archaeologist Max Uhle (1856–1944) while digging at the site in 1896 is an outstanding work of surveying. It was ncluded in the monographic report on Pachacamac published in 1903 which formed the basis of Uhle´s reputation as one of the leading archaeologists of his time working in the Andean area.The original plan was considered lost and was only recently discovered by chance in the estate of the Ecuadorian scientist and politician Jacinto Jijón y Caamaño (1890–1950). This article briefly describes the 25 large-format sheets that make up the original plan. Its main purpose, however, is to pursue the question of why this plan is now part of Jijón y Caamaño's estate. A plethora of information on this topic came from the correspondence between the two researchers, which is preserved in their respective estates.

The origin of syphilis, the apparently new venereal epidemic that swept Europe in the sixteenth century, is a longstanding question in the history of medicine. Treponemal diseases are among the most widespread infections found in humans, and may have affected hominines since the Pleistocene. Venereal syphilis, caused by Treponema pallidum ssp. pallidum, was especially dreaded because of its insidious contagion and its painful, disfiguring, and potentially lethal course. This article presents findings from an interdisciplinary study of the Loma Salvatierra archaeological site. The findings contribute to this discussion by further clarifying a likely origin and route of transmission of syphilis from the Old World to the New.
