The rigorous two-center approach based on the dual-kinetically balanced finite-basis-set expansion is applied to one-electron, heteronuclear diatomic Bi-Au, U-Pb, and Cf-U quasimolecules. The obtained $1\sigma$ ground-state energies are compared with previous calculations, when possible. Upon analysis of three different placements of the coordinate system's origin in the monopole approximation of the two-center potential: (1) in the middle, between the nuclei, (2) in the center of the heavy nucleus, and (3) in the center of the light nucleus, a substantial difference between the results is found. The leading contributions of one-electron quantum electrodynamics (self-energy and vacuum polarization) are evaluated within the monopole approximation as well.

While water lifting plays a recognized role in the global atmospheric power budget, estimates for this role in tropical cyclones vary from no effect to a major reduction in storm intensity. To better assess this impact, here we consider the work output of an infinitely narrow thermodynamic cycle with two streamlines connecting the top of the boundary layer in the vicinity of maximum wind (without assuming gradient-wind balance) to an arbitrary level in the inviscid free troposphere. The reduction of a storm's maximum wind speed due to water lifting is found to decline with increasing efficiency of the cycle and is about 5% for maximum observed Carnot efficiencies. In the steady-state cycle, there is an extra heat input associated with the warming of precipitating water. The corresponding positive extra work is of an opposite sign and several times smaller than that due to water lifting. We also estimate the gain of kinetic energy in the outflow region. Contrary to previous assessments, this term is found to be large when the outflow radius is small (comparable to the radius of maximum wind). Using our framework, we show that Emanuel's maximum potential intensity (E-PI) corresponds to a cycle where total work equals work performed at the top of the boundary layer (net work in the free troposphere is zero). This constrains a dependence between the outflow temperature and heat input at the point of maximum wind, but does not constrain the radial pressure gradient. The generalized dual-kinetic-balance approach for axially symmetric systems is employed to solve the two-center Dirac problem. The spectra of one-electron homonuclear quasimolecules are calculated and compared with the previous calculations. The analysis of the monopole approximation with two different choices of the origin is performed. Special attention is paid to the lead and xenon dimers, Pb$^{82+}$-Pb$^{82+}$-e$^{-}$ and Xe$^{54+}$-Xe$^{54+}$-e$^{-}$, where the energies of the ground and several excited $\sigma$-states are presented in the wide range of internuclear distances. The developed method provides the quasicomplete finite basis set and allows for construction of the perturbation theory, including within the bound-state QED.

In a recent paper Rousseau-Rizzi and Emanuel (2019) presented a derivation of an upper limit on maximum hurricane velocity at the surface. This derivation was based on a consideration of an infinitely narrow (differential) Carnot cycle with the warmer isotherm at the point of the maximum wind velocity. Here we show that this derivation neglected a significant term describing the kinetic energy change in the outflow. Additionally, we highlight the importance of a proper accounting for the power needed to lift liquid water. Finally, we provide a revision to the formula for surface fluxes of heat and momentum showing that, if we accept the assumptions adopted by Rousseau-Rizzi and Emanuel (2019), the resulting velocity estimate does not depend on the flux of sensible heat., Comment: Our comments on paper "An evaluation of hurricane superintensity in axisymmetric numerical models" by Rapha\"el Rousseau-Rizzi and Kerry Emanuel published in J. The Dirac Hamiltonian including nuclear recoil and vacuum-polarization operators is considered in a supercritical regime Z > 137. It is found that the nuclear recoil operator derived within the Breit approximation regularizes the Hamiltonian for the point-nucleus model and allows the ground state level to go continuously down and reach the negative energy continuum at a critical value Zcr = 145. If the Hamiltonian contains both the recoil operator and the Uehling potential, the 1s level reaches the negative energy continuum at Zcr = 144. The corresponding calculations for the excited states have been also performed. A systematic investigation of the nuclear-polarization effects in one- and few-electron heavy ions is presented. The nuclear-polarization corrections in the zeroth and first orders in $1/Z$ are evaluated to the binding energies, the hyperfine splitting, and the bound-electron g factor. It is shown, that the nuclear-polarization contributions can be substantially canceled simultaneously with the rigid nuclear corrections. This allows for new prospects for probing the QED effects in strong electromagnetic field and the determination of fundamental constants., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The nuclear recoil effect to the g factor of boron-like ions is investigated. The one-photon-exchange correction to the nuclear recoil effect is calculated in the non-relativistic approximation for the nuclear recoil operator and in the Breit approximation for the interelectronic-interaction operator. The screening potential is employed to estimate the higher-order contributions. The updated g-factor values are presented for the ground 2P_1/2 and first excited 2P_3/2 states of B-like argon 40^Ar^13+, which are presently being measured by the ARTEMIS group at GSI., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Journal of Physics

The g factor of lithiumlike 28Si11+ has been measured in a triple-Penning trap with a relative uncertainty of 1.1x10^{-9} to be g_exp=2.0008898899(21). The theoretical prediction for this value was calculated to be g_th=2.000889909(51) improving the accuracy to 2.5x10^{-8} due to the first rigorous evaluation of the two-photon exchange correction. The measured value is in excellent agreement with the state-of-the-art theoretical prediction and yields the most stringent test of bound-state QED for the g factor of the 1s^22s state and the relativistic many-electron calculations in a magnetic field.

An algebraic method for evaluating bare nucleon matrix elements of quark operators is proposed. Thereby, bare nucleon matrix elements are traced back to vacuum matrix elements. We consider a quantized massless and minimally coupled scalar field on a circular closed string with a time-dependent radius $R(t)$, whose undisturbed dynamics is governed by the Nambu-Goto action. Within the semi-classical treatment, the back-reaction of the quantum field onto the string dynamics is taken into account in terms of the renormalized expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor including the trace anomaly. The results indicate that the back-reaction could prevent the collapse of the circle $R\downarrow0$ -- however, the semi-classical picture fails to describe the string dynamics at the turning point (i.e., possible bounce) at finite values of $R$ and $\dot R$. The fate of the closed string after that point (e.g., oscillation or eternal acceleration) cannot be determined within the semi-classical picture and thus probably requires the full quantum treatment. Motivated by a recent proposal for an experimental verification of the dynamical Casimir effect, the macroscopic electromagnetic field within a perfect cavity containing a thin slab with a time-dependent dielectric permittivity is quantized in terms of the dual potentials. For the resonance case, the number of photons created out of the vacuum due to the dynamical Casimir effect is calculated for both polarizations (TE and TM). The phenomenon of particle creation within a resonantly vibrating lossy cavity is investigated for the example of a massless scalar field at finite temperature. Leakage is provided by insertion of a dispersive mirror into a larger ideal cavity. Via the rotating wave approximation we demonstrate that for the case of parametric resonance the exponential growth of the number of created particles and the strong enhancement at finite temperatures are preserved in the presence of reasonable losses. The renormalization method of Bogoljubov-Parasiuk-Hepp-Zimmermann (BPHZ) is used in order to derive the renormalized energy shift due to the gauge invariant K\"all\'en-Sabry diagram of the two-photon vacuum polarization (VPVP) as well as the self energy vacuum polarization S(VP)E beyond the Uehling approximation. It is outlined, that no outer renormalization is required for the two-photon vacuum polarization and that only the inner renormalization has to b e accomplished. It is shown that the so-called nongauge invariant spurious term is absent for a wide class of vacuum polarization (VP) diagrams if one applies the widely used spherical expansion of bound and free-electron propagat or. This simplifies significantly calculations in bound state quantum electrodynamis . We investigate the phenomenon of quantum radiation - i.e. the conversion of (virtual) quantum fluctuations into (real) particles induced by dynamical external conditions - for an initial thermal equilibrium state. For a resonantly vibrating cavity a rather strong enhancement of the number of generated particles (the dynamical Casimir effect) at finite temperatures is observed. Furthermore we derive the temperature corrections to the energy radiated by a single moving mirror and an oscillating bubble within a dielectric medium as well as the number of created particles within the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe. Alternative to the sonic black hole analogues we discuss a different scenario for modeling the Schwarzschild geometry in a laboratory - the dielectric black hole. The dielectric analogue of the horizon occurs if the velocity of the medium with a finite permittivity exceeds the speed of light in that medium. We prove that the massless neutral $\lambda\Phi^4$-theory does not possess a unique vacuum. Based on the Wightman axioms the non-existence of a state which preserves Poincar{\'e} and scale invariance is demonstrated non-perturbatively for a non-vanishing self-interaction. We conclude that it is necessary to break the scale invariance in order to define a vacuum state. The renormalized vacuum expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor is derived from the two-point Wightman function employing the point-splitting technique and its relation to the phionic and the scalar condensate is addressed. A canonical formalism is presented which allows for investigations of quantum radiation induced by localized, smooth disturbances of classical background fields by means of a perturbation theory approach. For massless, non-selfinteracting quantum fields at zero temperature we demonstrate that the low-energy part of the spectrum of created particles exhibits a non-thermal character. Applied to QED in varying dielectrics the response theory approach facilitates to study two distinct processes contributing to the production of photons: the squeezing effect due to space-time varying properties of the medium and of the velocity effect due to its motion. The generalization of this approach to finite temperatures as well as the relation to sonoluminescence is indicated., Comment: 20 pages
