Abstract

The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) is a European project to develop and operate the next generation gamma-ray spectrometer. AGATA is based on the technique of gamma-ray energy tracking in electrically segmented high-purity germanium crystals. This technique requires the accurate determination of the energy, time and position of every interaction as a gamma ray deposits its energy within the detector volume. Reconstruction of the full interaction path results in a detector with very high efficiency and excellent spectral response. The realization of gamma-ray tracking and AGATA is a result of many technical advances. These include the development of encapsulated highly-segmented germanium detectors assembled in a triple cluster detector cryostat, an electronics system with fast digital sampling and a data acquisition system to process the data at a high rate. The full characterization of the crystals was measured and compared with detector-response simulations. This enabled pulse-shape analysis algorithms, to extract energy, time and position, to be employed. In addition, tracking algorithms for event reconstruction were developed. The first phase of AGATA is now complete and operational in its first physics campaign. In the future AGATA will be moved between laboratories in Europe and operated in a series of campaigns to take advantage of the different beams and facilities available to maximize its science output. Abstract

The gamma-decay associated with the warm rotation of the superdeformed (SD) nuclei 151Tb and 196Pb has been measured with the EUROBALL IV array. Several independent quantities provide a stringent test of the population and decay dynamics in the SD well. A Monte Carlo simulation of the gamma-decay based on microscopic calculations gives remarkable agreement with the data only assuming a large enhancement of the B(E1) strength at low excitation energy, which may be related to the evidence for octupole vibrations in both mass regions.

Abstract

The gamma-rays following the reaction 105 MeV 18O + 28Si have been measured using the EUROBALL IV, HECTOR and EUCLIDES arrays in order to investigate the predicted Jacobi shape transition. The high-energy gamma-ray spectrum from the GDR decay indicates a presence of large deformations in hot 46Ti nucleus, in agreement with new theoretical calculations based on the Rotating Liquid Drop model., Comment: NS2002 Conference. Abstract

The next generation of 4π arrays for high-precision γ-ray spectroscopy AGATA will consist of γ-ray tracking detectors. They represent high-fold segmented Ge detectors and a front-end electronics, based on digital signal processing techniques, which allows to extract energy, timing and spatial information on the interactions of a γ-ray in the Ge detector by pulse shape analysis of its signals. Utilizing the information on the positions of the interaction points and the energies released at each point the tracks of the γ-rays in a Ge shell can be reconstructed in three dimensions on the basis of the Compton-scattering formula.

Abstract

Minimal data about oral and dental health in long-term survivors after BMT are available. We studied the dental status of 27 children (19 males, eight females) with leukaemia, followed up with a routine oral examination, panoramic tomogram and, when necessary, an endoral radiograph at a median of 2 years (range 1-10) after BMT. Community periodontal index treatment necessity (CPITN), dental caries, missing or filled permanent teeth (DMFT) and dento-facial alterations according to WHO criteria were registered and evaluated. Median age of the patients at BMT was 9 years (range 1.1-17.9), The mean DMFT score ranged from 1.6 to 12.4 according to age at examination and was slightly higher than that which we previously reported in children who received chemotherapy alone, CPITN showed the presence of soft deposits in 77.7%, serious gingivitis in 59.2% and parodontal involvement in 3.7% of cases, Dento-facial abnormalities were found in 55.5% of patients, while 62.9% of the patients had tooth abnormalities or agenesis. Nine out of 27 patients (33%) had root hypoplasia, A negative impact on DMFT index due to multiple post-BMT factors was found. Age is the crucial factor in determining a developmental defect of enamel and root, The follow-up of long-term survivors after BMT should include regular dental examination. Abstract

The problems with reconstructing the trajectory of [Gamma]-rays and identifying their interaction points in segmented coaxial HPGe detectors are discussed here in view of their importance in the design of the next generation of detector arrays for [Gamma]-ray spectroscopy studies. In fact, the tracking quality of the [Gamma]-ray interactions in the medium controls the overall detection efficiency. This paper focuses on two main points. One is the study of how the tracking reconstruction efficiency is affected by the ability of disentangle multiple interactions per segment. The other is the study of the consequences that different types of segmentation have on the overall efficiency. Two geometries have been chosen: that of a single cylindrical detector and that of a spherical shell.

Abstract

A Monte Carlo simulation of the $\gamma$ decay of superdeformed nuclei has been developed. It is based on microscopic calculations for the energy levels, E2 decay probabilities, collective mass parameters, and potential energy barriers. The use of microscopically calculated quantities largely reduces the parameters of the simulation, allowing one to focus on the basic ingredients of the physical processes. Calculations are performed for the warm rotating superdeformed nuclei 151Tb and 196Pb, for which high statistics Euroball IV data are available. The dependence on the simulation parameters is investigated, together with the basic features of the microscopic calculations

Abstract

The $\gamma$ decay associated with the warm rotation of the superdeformed nuclei 151Tb and 196Pb has been measured with the Euroball IV array. Several experimental quantities are presented, putting strong constraints on the decay dynamics in the superdeformed well. The data are successfully reproduced using a Monte Carlo simulation of the $\gamma$ decay based on microscopically calculated energy levels, E2 decay probabilities, collective mass parameters, and potential energy barriers between the wells associated with normal and super deformation. This allows one to test the basic ingredients of the physical process, such as the strength of the two-body residual interaction and the potential barriers as a function of spin and excitation energy. We also show that the data probe the E1 strength function, indicating an enhancement around 1–2 MeV $\gamma$ rays, which might be related to octupole vibrations

Abstract

A Monte Carlo simulation of the $\gamma$ decay based on microscopic calculations gives remarkable agreement with the data only assuming a large enhancement of the B(E1) strength for 1–2 MeV $\gamma$ rays, which may be related to the evidence for octupole vibrations in both mass regions.

Abstract

14 leukemic children, who underwent Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT), were evaluated for oral and dental status. 11/14 (78.6) patients had dental abnormalities (agenesia, crown opacity and ipoplasya, impaired root development). 11/14 presented multiple caries. Temporomandibular joint function was altered in 1/14 patient. Parodontal abnormalities incidence was similar to a normal population. In conclusion we found an increased incidence in agenesis and root abnormalities.

Abstract

International audience; The CLARA–PRISMA setup consisting of the array of Euroball Clover detectors CLARA, coupled to the LNL large acceptance magnetic spectrometer PRISMA, has been successfully working since spring 2004. Recently, new developments such as the ancillary device DANTE and the use of the differential plunger technique has improved the capabilities of the setup. Results of experiments studying the structure of neutron-rich nuclei together with the preliminary results on the commissioning of the ancillary detector array DANTE and of the plunger technique will be presented.

Deep-inelastic and multi-nucleon transfer reactions can be used to populate nuclei with relatively large neutron excess. Recently, at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, a setup consisting on an efficient gamma-ray detection system CLARA coupled to the large acceptance magnetic spectrometer PRISMA, capable of tracking the trajectories of the reaction products, has been assembled. Abstract

CLARA is an array of 25 Clover (EUROBALL type) Ge detectors, placed at the target position of the large acceptance magnetic spectrometer PRISMA. Due to the granularity of the CLARA Ge array (100 crystals), the photopeak efficiency ( 3%) and the PRISMA large acceptance ( 80 msr, and 20% Δ p/p), the setup is an excellent tool to investigate the structure of neutron-rich nuclei, populated in multinucleon transfer reactions and deep inelastic collisions with stable beams. Since March 2004 the setup is fully operational, and since then several experiments have been performed, with beams delivered by the LNL XTU-Tandem and the ALPI linac. In this contribution the preliminary outcome of the first experiments is shown.

Abstract

The $\gamma$ decay in the quasicontinuum is used to study the order-to-chaos transition in the thermally excited $^{163}$Er nucleus. The experimental analysis is performed on high-statistics EUROBALL data, focusing on the spin region I$\approx (20–40) \hbar$, and internal excitation energy up of $\approx$ 2.5 MeV. The results are compared to cranked shell model calculations for this nucleus, taking into account the dependence on the K quantum number. Two main topics are investigated. First, the validity of the selection rules associated with the K quantum number are studied as a function of the internal energy U above yrast. K-selection rules are found to be obeyed in the decay along discrete unresolved rotational bands up to U $\approx$ 1.2 MeV, whereas in the interval U $\approx$ 1.2–2.5 MeV, where the order-to-chaos transition is expected to take place, selection rules are found to be only partially valid. Second, the line-shape analysis of $\gamma-\gamma$ coincidence spectra provides a direct experimental measurement of the rotational and compound damping widths ($\Gamma_{rot}$ and $\Gamma\mu$), yielding values of 200 and 20 keV, respectively, in good agreement with theory.

Abstract

14 leukemic children, who underwent Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT), were evaluated for oral and dental status. 11/14 (78.6) patients had dental abnormalities (agenesia, crown opacity and ipoplasya, impaired root development). 11/14 presented multiple caries. Temporomandibular joint function was altered in 1/14 patient. Parodontal abnormalities incidence was similar to a normal population. In conclusion we found an increased incidence in agenesis and root abnormalities.

Abstract

The next generation of 4π arrays for high-precision γ-ray spectroscopy AGATA will consist of γ-ray tracking detectors. They represent high-fold segmented Ge detectors and a front-end electronics, based on digital signal processing techniques, which allows to extract energy, timing and spatial information on the interactions of a γ-ray in the Ge detector by pulse shape analysis of its signals. Utilizing the information on the positions of the interaction points and the energies released at each point the tracks of the γ-rays in a Ge shell can be reconstructed in three dimensions on the basis of the Compton-scattering formula.

Abstract

The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) is a European project to develop and operate the next generation gamma-ray spectrometer. AGATA is based on the technique of gamma-ray energy tracking in electrically segmented high-purity germanium crystals. This technique requires the accurate determination of the energy, time and position of every interaction as a gamma ray deposits its energy within the detector volume. Reconstruction of the full interaction path results in a detector with very high efficiency and excellent spectral response. The realisation of gamma-ray tracking and AGATA is a result of many technical advances. These include the development of encapsulated highly segmented germanium detectors assembled in a triple cluster detector cryostat, an electronics system with fast digital sampling and a data acquisition system to process the data at a high rate. The full characterisation of the crystals was measured and compared with detector-response simulations. This enabled pulse-shape analysis algorithms, to extract energy, time and position, to be employed. In addition, tracking algorithms for event reconstruction were developed. The first phase of AGATA is now complete and operational in its first physics campaign. In the future AGATA will be moved between laboratories in Europe and operated in a series of campaigns to take advantage of the different beams and facilities available to maximise its science output. The paper reviews all the achievements made in the AGATA project including all the necessary infrastructure to operate and support the spectrometer.

Abstract

The heavy nucleus (272)(108)Hs (Z = 108) and its evaporation daughters were produced using the reaction Th-232(Ar-40, gamma xn) with beam energies 10.5 and 15.0 MeV/A. The giant dipole resonance gamma radiation from the hot composite system prior to fission has been isolated using a differential method. the prefission component shows a strong dipole angular distribution relative to the spin direction.

Abstract

The GDR gamma decay of highly excited (272)Hs and (269)Ns nuclei and their evaporation daughters was studied in coincidence with fission fragments. A difference technique was used to isolate the pre-fission component. Strong dipole collectivity was observed. The lifetime of the hot superheavy nuclei is estimated.

Abstract

The low-lying states of Nd-144 have been investigated up to an excitation energy of 3.1 MeV by means of high-resolution inelastic electron scattering. Transition charge densities have been extracted for natural-parity states. The experimental data have been compared with the predictions of the quasiparticle-phonon model. The calculations show that both collective and single-particle degrees of freedom are important for describing the low-lying states of Nd-144. A comparison of the present data with data for Nd-142 and Ce-142 emphasizes the role played by the two valence neutrons outside the N = 82 closed shell.

Abstract

The next generation of 4 pi arrays for high-precision gamma -ray spectroscopy will involve "gamma -ray tracking front-end on digital signal processing techniques, which allows to extract energy, timing and spatial information on the interactions of a gamma -ray in the Ge detector by pulse shape analysis of its signals. Utilizing the information on the positions of the interaction points and the energies released at each point the tracks of the gamma -rays in a Ge shell can be reconstructed in three dimensions., NR 2015
