BACKGROUND: Urethral diverticulum (UD) is a poorly defined anomaly consisting of an outpouching of the urethra. Management without surgical resection is not previously reported in dogs. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: Report the outcome of male dogs presented for urinary incontinence with UD treated with an artificial urethral sphincter (AUS). ANIMALS: Eight client-owned dogs with UD treated with an AUS. METHODS: Multicenter retrospective study. Medical records from male dogs with urinary incontinence were reviewed. INCLUSION CRITERIA:  diagnosis of a UD by retrograde cystourethrography, cystoscopy, abdominal ultrasonography or contrast computed tomodensitometry (CT) or a combination of these modalities, AUS placement, and at least 1 follow-up. Urinary continence score (UCS) was attributed retrospectively. RESULTS: Median UCS at presentation was 1/5. A contrast cystourethrogram was diagnostic in 8/8 dogs. All diverticula were saccular, and 7/8 were within the prostatic urethra and 1/8 extended up to the membranous urethra. A congenital origin was suspected in 7 dogs and acquired in 1. Concurrent anomalies included renal dysplasia or chronic pyelonephritis (n = 4), bilateral cryptorchidism (n = 3), and pelvic urinary bladder (n = 3). All dogs were poorly/moderately responsive to phenylpropanolamine. Artificial urethral sphincter placement resulted in improvement in continence in all dogs with a median UCS of 4/5 (5/5 in 2/8 dogs, 4/5 in 5/8 dogs, 3/5 in 1/8 dogs). CONCLUSION: Urethral diverticulum should be considered in male dogs with persistent urinary incontinence not responding to medical management. Artificial urethral sphincter placement is an effective therapeutic option that improved continence scores in all dogs.

Chylopericardium is a rare entity in veterinary medicine. In this report we document the development of chylopericardium in two dogs undergoing chronic hemodialysis. An 11-year-old female spayed Labrador retriever (Case 1) presented with acute coughing and lethargy 2 months following initial dialysis catheter placement and initiation of dialysis therapy for severe azotemia. Echocardiography demonstrated severe pericardial effusion and cardiac tamponade. Pericardial fluid analysis was consistent with chylous effusion. The dog underwent a subtotal pericardiectomy with thoracic duct ligation, and a PleuralPort™ was placed. The patient continued to receive outpatient hemodialysis therapy after pericardiectomy for several months until she died acutely at home. A 4-year-old male neutered Doberman (Case 2) was being treated for 2 months with outpatient hemodialysis for management of chronic kidney disease. On presentation for the 17th hemodialysis treatment, the patient had increased respiratory rate. Echocardiography demonstrated pleural and pericardial effusions, and fluid analysis in both cavities was consistent with chylous effusion. Use of tissue plasminogen activator (TPA), clot removal and replacement of the catheter was attempted; however pleural and pericardial effusion continued. The patient was euthanized after 25 hemodialysis sessions as owners elected not to pursue more procedures. In both cases, the cause of the chylopericardium was suspected to be secondary to catheter-associated thrombosis and/or stenosis based on multiple imaging modalities. Despite use of rivaroxaban and clopidogrel concurrently in each case, the chylous effusion persisted. This case report describes clinical details of a rare complication of long-term indwelling dialysis catheters in two dogs.

ObjectivesTo investigate if hepatitis A virus cell receptor 1/kidney injury molecule 1 (HAVCR1/KIM1) in urine is detectable concurrently with increases in serum creatinine concentrations in horses receiving a recommended dose of phenylbutazone (PBZ) for 7 days.DesignPreliminary study.MethodsTen clinically healthy horses with normal physical examination and laboratory work were randomly assigned to PBZ or placebo groups (5 each). The PBZ group received PBZ at 4.4 mg/kg mixed with corn syrup orally every 12 hours. The placebo group received corn syrup orally every 12 hours. Both groups were treated for 7 days. Kidney ultrasonography was performed, and venous blood and urine samples were collected prior to commencement and at the end of treatment. Samples from 1 additional healthy horse, 3 horses with acute kidney failure, and 1 horse with chronic kidney failure were also evaluated.ResultsNone of the 10 horses had detectable HAVCR1/KIM1 in urine at baseline. Serum creatinine concentrations in placebo group did not increase, and HAVCR1/KIM1 was undetectable in urine. At the end of treatment, 3 of 5 horses receiving PBZ developed increases in serum creatinine of >26.5 μmol/L (>0.3 mg/dL), and HAVCR1/KIM1 was detectable in urine, despite normal findings on kidney ultrasonography in all horses.ConclusionsHAVCR1/KIM1 is detectable in urine and is associated with increases in serum creatinine concentrations of >26.5 μmol/L in horses following treatment with PBZ for 7 consecutive days. Thus, HAVCR1/KIM1 might aid in the early detection of acute kidney injury in horses.

BackgroundUltrafiltration is performed to alleviate fluid overload in dogs with acute kidney injury (AKI) undergoing intermittent hemodialysis (IHD).ObjectivesTo describe prescription patterns for ultrafiltration in dogs receiving IHD for AKI and risk factors for ultrafiltration-related complications.AnimalsSeventy-seven dogs undergoing 144 IHD treatments between 2009 and 2019.MethodsMedical records of dogs receiving IHD for AKI were reviewed. The initial 3 IHD treatments in which ultrafiltration was prescribed were included. Ultrafiltration-related complications were defined as those requiring an intervention such as transient or permanent discontinuation of ultrafiltration.ResultsMean fluid removal rate per treatment was 8.1 ± 4.5 mL/kg/h. Ultrafiltration-related complications occurred in 37/144 (25.7%) of treatments. Hypotension was rare (6/144, 4.2% of treatments). No ultrafiltration-related complications resulted in deaths. The mean prescribed fluid removal rate per treatment was higher in dogs with ultrafiltration-related complications than without (10.8 ± 4.9 mL/kg/h vs 8.8 ± 5.1 mL/kg/h, respectively; P = .03). BackgroundAmphotericin-B (AmB) is an essential medication for the treatment of life-threatening systemic mycoses but the incidence and risk factors for acute kidney injury (AKI) after its administration are not known in dogs.ObjectiveDetermine the incidence of and risk factors for AKI in dogs receiving AmB.AnimalsFifty-one client owned dogs receiving AmB for the treatment of systemic mycoses.MethodsRetrospective study. Signalment, potential risk factors, AKI development (creatinine ≥0.3 mg/dL from baseline), drug formulation (deoxycholate [AmB-D] or lipid complex [ABLC]), dose, and treatment duration were recorded. The probability of an AKI diagnosis was evaluated using a log-rank test. BACKGROUND: Idiopathic functional urinary outflow tract obstruction (iFUOTO) is an uncommon but life-limiting disease whose etiology and clinical course of disease remain poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: Characterize signalment, clinical signs, clinicopathologic findings, treatments, and propose a standardized response score for dogs with iFUOTO. ANIMALS: Thirty-one client-owned dogs diagnosed with iFUOTO. METHODS: Retrospective case series. Medical records from 2010 to 2021 were reviewed and findings recorded. Dogs were categorized based on the presence or absence of overt signs of neurological disease. Response to treatment was scored. RESULTS: Thirty-one dogs were included. All dogs had stranguria and 14 (45%) had overflow urinary incontinence. Mean age of onset for signs was 6.9 years±8 months. Twenty-four dogs (77%) were castrated males, 5 (16%) intact males, and 2 (6%) spayed females. Eight (26%) of dogs had overt neurological deficits. Follow-up data were available for 29 dogs (median 38 days, range: 2-1277). Final outcome scores were not significantly different among dogs with overt signs of neurological disease (median score 2.5; range: 0-3) and those without (median score 1; range; 0-3; P = .35). Treatments included alpha antagonists, skeletal muscle relaxants, parasympathomimetics, anti-inflammatories, castration, temporary placement of a urethral catheter, or a combination of these. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Multimodal treatment was frequently prescribed, but a standard outcome score is needed to evaluate the effectiveness of these therapies. Serial neurological examinations and monitoring of the dogs dysuria are warranted.

BACKGROUND: Interventional radiology (IR) and interventional endoscopy (IE) have broad potential for minimally invasive therapy in veterinary patients, but the scope of original peer-reviewed veterinary IR/IE research publications has not been described. OBJECTIVES: Catalogue published applications and indications for noncardiac therapeutic IR/IE in animals and describe type and quality of veterinary IR/IE research over 20 years. METHODS: Highly-cited veterinary journals were searched to identify articles published 2000 to 2019 involving therapeutic IR/IE applications for clinical veterinary patients. Articles were assigned a level of evidence (LOE) according to published standards. Authorship, animal data, study design, and interventions were described. Change in publication rate, study size, and LOE of IR/IE articles over time was analyzed. RESULTS: One hundred fifty-nine of 15 512 (1%) articles were eligible, including 2972 animals. BackgroundPimobendan might have favorable effects on renal function but this has not been well-studied in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD).ObjectivesDetermine the effects of standard-dose (SD_pimo) and high-dose pimobendan (HD_pimo) on glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and cardiac size and function in dogs with preclinical MMVD.AnimalsThirty nonazotemic dogs with stage B2 MMVD.MethodsProspective, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical study. Dogs had an echocardiographic examination, assessment of GFR (iohexol clearance), N-terminal probrain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), and quality of life (QOL) score at baseline and 7 to 10 days after placebo (n = 6), SD_pimo 0.2 to 0.3 mg/kg q12 (n = 12), or HD_pimo 0.5 to 0.6 mg/kg q12h (n = 12).ResultsNo significant differences in GFR or QOL scores were detected between groups (P ≥ .07). BackgroundCystourethroscopy and vaginoscopy (uroendoscopy) is often used in the diagnostic evaluation of dogs with lower urinary tract disorders (LUTD).Objective/hypothesisTo evaluate if uroendoscopy is warranted in dogs with various LUTD, the agreement between uroendoscopic and ultrasonographic diagnoses were compared. Dogs with recurrent urinary tract infections (rUTI) will have the highest diagnostic agreement between uroendoscopy and ultrasonography (US) compared to dogs presenting for other LUTD.AnimalsTwo hundred thirty-seven dogs presenting between 2014 and 2019 with lower urinary tract signs (LUTS) that had US within 60 days preceding uroendoscopy.MethodsRetrospective study. Dogs were categorized by primary indication for ultrasound. Pertinent uroendoscopic findings were recorded and agreements (κ analysis) between the final uroendoscopic diagnosis were compared with the final ultrasonographic diagnosis.ResultsPertinent uroendoscopic findings were recorded for 69/237 (29%) cases. For dogs presenting primarily for urinary incontinence (UI), agreement between uroendoscopy and US was 71% (46/65; κ = 0.47, 95% CI 0.28-0.66), for dogs with stranguria, 58% (29/50; κ = 0.47, 95% CI 0.31-0.62) and for dogs with rUTI the agreement was substantial at 87% (26/30; κ = 0.70, 95% CI 0.43-0.98). Urethral strictures were the majority (14/21; 67%) of pertinent uroendoscopic findings for dogs with stranguria, of which 12 were male dogs.Conclusions and clinical importanceAgreement between uroendoscopy and US was moderate for all dogs. Based on these data, recommendation for uroendoscopy should be tailored to individual clinical presentation and signalment; transabdominal US is not the preferred modality for urethral lesions.

BackgroundPlacement of a subcutaneous ureteral bypass (SUB) device is an effective method to relieve all causes of ureteral obstruction in cats. Complications involving migration within the gastrointestinal tract have been seldomly described.ObjectivesTo characterize transmural migration of SUB devices within the digestive tract in cats.AnimalsEleven migrated SUB catheters identified in 8 cats between 2017 and 2021.MethodsRetrospective review of medical records of cats with a SUB device in which migration into the gastrointestinal tract was identified.ResultsThe median time from SUB device placement to implant migration was 928 days (201-2298 days). Seven cats had obstruction of the SUB device and a positive urine culture at diagnosis. The migration was identified by ultrasound in 6/11, pre-operative contrast radiography in 2/2, and only at time of surgery in 3 SUB devices. All cats underwent surgical correction. Four nephrostomy and 7 cystotomy catheters migrated. Migration occurred into the duodenum (3/11), jejunum (7/11), and colon (1/11). SUB devices were removed in 7 cats and replaced in 2 cats, with 1 cat diagnosed with 2 migration events. Gastrointestinal resection and anastomosis were performed in 7/8 cats and an enterotomy in 2 cats. Six cats survived to discharge. The median follow-up time after migration diagnosis was 365 days (range, 0-1114 days) and 2 cats are still alive.Conclusions and clinical importanceAlthough a rare complication, migration of SUB device should be considered in cats with SUB device obstruction and a positive urine culture.

BackgroundUrethral obstruction secondary to artificial urethral sphincter (AUS) implantation is a recognized complication in dogs. However, urethral obstruction secondary to AUS-associated capsule formation has been described rarely.HypothesisDescribe clinical and diagnostic findings, management, and outcome in 6 dogs with urethral obstruction secondary to AUS-associated capsule formation.AnimalsSix client-owned dogs.MethodsRetrospective study. Medical records between January 1, 2010, and June 30, 2021, were reviewed to identify dogs with urethral obstruction associated with the AUS device.ResultsThe AUS device was implanted a median of 884 days (range, 20-2457 days) before presentation for urethral obstruction. Median age at time of urethral obstruction was 4.7 years (range, 3.1-8.7 years). Clinical signs at the time of urethral obstruction were stranguria (n = 4), pollakiuria (3), weak urine stream (2), and worsened urinary incontinence (1). In all dogs, the urethra was noted to be stenotic during urethroscopy and positive contrast cystourethrography. All dogs underwent surgery, and a fibrous capsule associated with the AUS was found to be causing urethral stenosis. Resolution of urethral obstruction occurred in all dogs after transection or removal of the capsule. Positive bacterial cultures were obtained from the capsule, AUS, or both in all dogs. Recurrence of urethral obstruction had not occurred in any dog at the time of follow-up.Conclusions and clinical importanceUrethral obstruction secondary to capsule formation is an uncommon but clinically important complication associated with use of the AUS. Continued investigation is needed to evaluate this complication more thoroughly, and its possible association with infection.

Urothelial carcinoma (UC), the most common urologic cancer in dogs, is often diagnosed late because the clinical signs are shared by other non-malignant lower urinary tract disorders (LUTD). The urine-based BRAFV595E test for UC is highly effective only in certain breeds; hence additional non-invasive biomarkers of UC are needed. Here, urine from dogs with UC (n = 27), urolithiasis (n = 8), or urolithiasis with urinary tract infection (UTI) (n = 8) were subjected to untargeted metabolomics analyses, using GC-TOF-MS for primary metabolites, QTOF-MS for complex lipids, and HILIC-QTOF MS for secondary and charged metabolites. After adjusting for age and sex, we identified 1123 known metabolites that were differentially expressed between UC and LUTD. Twenty-seven metabolites were significant (1.5 ≤ log2FC ≤ −1.5, adjusted p-value < 0.05); however, 10 of these could be attributed to treatment-related changes. Of the remaining 17, 6 (hippuric acid, N-Acetylphenylalanine, sarcosine, octanoylcarnitine, N-alpha-methylhistamine, glycerol-3-galactoside) discriminated between UC and LUTD (area under the ROC curve > 0.85). Of the 6 metabolites, only hippuric acid and N-alpha-methylhistamine were discriminatory in both male (n = 20) and female (n = 23) dogs, while sarcosine was an effective discriminator in several breeds, but only in females. Further investigation of these metabolites is warranted for potential use as non-invasive diagnostic biomarkers of dogs with UC that present with LUTD-related clinical signs.

Urine retention secondary to neoplastic obstructions of the upper and lower urinary tracts is a life-threatening condition in both humans and companion animals. Stents can be placed to temporarily or permanently open obstructed urinary tract lumens and are often able to be placed using minimally invasive techniques with guidance via ultrasonography or fluoroscopy. The literature for these techniques is vast for humans and growing for companion animals. The below review provides a discussion of the principles of stenting and types of ureteral and urethral stents, as well as the techniques for placing these stents in humans and companion animals.

BackgroundUrolithiasis is a common and often recurrent problem in dogs.ObjectiveTo evaluate trends in urolith composition in dogs and to assess risk factors for urolithiasis, including age, breed, sex, neuter status, urolith location, and bacterial urolith cultures.Sample populationA total of 10 444 uroliths and the dogs from which they were obtained.MethodsThe laboratory database at the UC Davis Gerald V. Ling Urinary Stone Analysis Laboratory was searched for all urolith submissions from dogs between January 2006 and December 2018. Mineral type, age, breed, sex, neuter status, urolith location, and urolith culture were recorded. Trends were evaluated and variables compared to evaluate risk factors.ResultsCalcium oxalate (CaOx) and struvite-containing uroliths comprised the majority of all submissions from dogs, representing 47.0% and 43.6%, respectively. The proportion of CaOx-containing uroliths significantly decreased from 49.5% in 2006 to 41.8% in 2018 (P = .006), with no change in the proportion of struvite-containing urolith submissions. Cystine-containing uroliths comprised 2.7% of all submissions between 2006 and 2018 and a significant nonlinear increase in this mineral type occurred over time (1.4% of all submissions in 2006 to 8.7% in 2018; P

BackgroundUrolithiasis is an important upper and lower urinary tract disease in cats that results in morbidity and mortality.ObjectiveTo describe trends in composition of uroliths in cats and evaluate risk factors related to age, breed, sex, urolith location, and bacterial urolith cultures.Sample populationA total of 3940 uroliths and the cats from which they were obtained.MethodsThe database of the UC Davis Gerald V. Ling Urinary Stone Analysis Laboratory was searched for all urolith submissions from cats between January 2005 and December 2018. Mineral type, age, breed, sex, and urolith location and culture results were recorded. Trends were evaluated and variables compared to evaluate risk factors.ResultsA significant decrease in the proportion of calcium oxalate (CaOx)-containing uroliths occurred over time (P = .02), from 50.1% (204/407) of all submissions in 2005 to 37.7% (58/154) in 2018. In contrast, the proportion of struvite-containing uroliths increased significantly (P = .002), from 41.8% (170/407) in 2005 to 54.5% (84/154) in 2018. The proportion of CaOx-containing uroliths in the upper urinary tract was significantly higher compared to the proportion of other urolith types in the upper urinary tract. Urate-containing uroliths were the third most common type (361/3940, 9.2%). Overall, sex and age predispositions were similar to those reported previously.Conclusions and clinical importanceThe decrease in the proportion of CaOx-containing uroliths and increase in the proportion of struvite-containing uroliths warrants investigation. Further education regarding the efficacy of medical dissolution of struvite-containing uroliths is recommended.

Zoledronic acid (ZOL) is an intravenous bisphosphonate indicated for the use of hypercalcemia of malignancy and management of bony metastases. Its therapeutic effect lies in the targeting of malignant osteoclasts; however, administration can be associated with renal toxicity. The objective of this retrospective study was to evaluate the frequency and severity of acute kidney injury (AKI) following ZOL administration in a cohort of cancer-bearing dogs. A pharmacy search was conducted to identify dogs that received a dose of ZOL between June 2016 and July 2019. Inclusion criteria included baseline and post-treatment chemistry panels. Medical records were reviewed to obtain clinical data including signalment, dose, dosage, number of treatments administered, and changes in renal function. Forty-four dogs met the inclusion criteria. Median number of doses administered was three [interquartile range (IQR), 2-5]. The median highest creatinine value occurred after a median of one dose (IQR, 1-2 doses) compared with the median highest value of blood urea nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, which occurred after a median of two doses (IQR, 1-3). Six (13.6%) dogs developed an AKI, and one dog (2.3%) had progression of an existing azotemia after treatment with ZOL was initiated. Two dogs (4.5%) had ZOL treatment discontinued secondary to development of azotemia. Use of concurrent administration of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or anesthesia did not significantly increase the risk of AKI in this cohort of dogs. Acute kidney injury is observed infrequently in cancer-bearing dogs treated with ZOL and is generally mild to moderate in severity; discontinuation of ZOL due to AKI is uncommon.

BackgroundAzotemia occurs in cats administered doxorubicin, but risk factors have not been explored.ObjectiveTo determine incidence of progressive increases in serum creatinine concentration in cats with cancer receiving doxorubicin in single or multiagent chemotherapy protocols and associated risk factors.AnimalsSeventy cats with cancer receiving doxorubicin.MethodsA retrospective study (2007-2017) of cats with indices of kidney function recorded before and after doxorubicin administration was reviewed. Cats diagnosed with kidney injury because of known etiologies other than possible doxorubicin toxicosis were excluded. Variables were compared to identify risk factors.ResultsMean age (±SD) was 10.9 years (±3.2). Cancer types included lymphoma (n = 36), sarcoma (n = 19) and carcinoma (n = 14). Chronic kidney disease was present in 29/70 (41%) cats before receiving doxorubicin. Of 70 cats, 24 (34%) developed an increase in serum creatinine concentration ≥0.3 mg/dL and 10 (14%) had an increase ≥50% from baseline. Mean time to increases in serum creatinine concentration ≥0.3 mg/dL from first administration of doxorubicin was 119.3 days (±89.7), with mean 2.8 (±1.2) doses administered. Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) is an emerging treatment for dogs with immune-mediated diseases, but reports for treatment of immune-mediated thrombocytopenia (IMT) are lacking. These case reports illustrate the application of centrifugal TPE in 4 dogs with IMT. All dogs presented with severe hemorrhage requiring ≥1 blood transfusions, were unresponsive to conventional treatment or both. Dogs were treated with 3 sequential centrifugal TPE sessions, totaling 4.0 to 4.9 total plasma volumes exchanged per dog. In 3 dogs, TPE was associated with improvement in clinical manifestations of bleeding and platelet count in combination with immunosuppressive drugs. One dog was euthanized after 3 treatments because of persistent severe thrombocytopenia and hemorrhage. Preliminary observations indicate that TPE is safe and may be a useful adjunct in the management of IMT that is severe or refractory to traditional treatment.

BackgroundLower urinary tract transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) is an important but rarely described disease of cats.ObjectivesTo report the clinical characteristics, treatments, and outcomes in a cohort of cats with lower urinary tract TCC and to test identified variables for prognostic relevance.AnimalsOne-hundred eighteen client-owned cats with lower urinary tract carcinoma.MethodsMedical records were retrospectively reviewed to obtain information regarding clinical characteristics, treatments, and outcomes. Recorded variables were analyzed statistically.ResultsMedian age of affected cats was 15 years (range, 5.0-20.8 years) and median duration of clinical signs was 30 days (range, 0-730 days). The trigone was the most common tumor location (32/118; 27.1%) as assessed by ultrasound examination, cystoscopy, or both. Treatment was carried out in 73 of 118 (61.9%) cats. Metastatic disease was documented in 25 of 118 (21.2%) cats. BackgroundUreteral stent and subcutaneous ureteral bypass (SUB) placement are commonly used for managing ureteral obstructions. Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a recognized complication.ObjectivesTo determine postoperative incidence of positive urine cultures in cats undergoing ureteral stent and SUB placement and to identify risk factors associated with positive urine cultures.DesignRetrospective study.AnimalsForty-three cats that underwent 48 surgical events.ProceduresMedical records were reviewed. Cats were included if urine cultures were performed before and after surgery. Variables were compared to identify risk factors.ResultsUrine cultures were positive postoperatively pre-discharge in 5/20 (25%) cats. Median duration of follow-up post-discharge was 209 days (range, 11-2184 days), with a total of 143 urine cultures performed in cats post-discharge. Of these, 16 (11%) were positive in 12/48 (25%) cats. Nine different bacteria were identified; Enterococcus spp. (n = 8) predominated as monomicrobic or mixed infections. In 14/16 instances of positive urine cultures, affected cats had lower urinary tract signs, signs of pyelonephritis or both. Cats that received antibiotics postoperatively were significantly less likely to have a positive urine culture compared to those that did not (odds ratio, 0.2, 95% confidence interval, 0.05, 0.8, P = 0.02). Chronic kidney disease, renal implant type and postoperative urinary catheterization were not associated with positive urine cultures.Conclusions and clinical relevancePostoperatively, occurrence of positive urine cultures was similar to previous reports. Subclinical bacteriuria was less common than UTI. Postoperative urinary catheterization has been speculated to increase risk of bacteriuria, but this was not the case in this cohort.

ObjectiveTo describe the management and resolution of anuric acute kidney injury (AKI) in a dog with multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) associated with gallbladder wall necrosis.Case summaryAn 11-year-old neutered female spayed dog was referred for evaluation of anuria following cholecystectomy. Following surgery, the patient became anuric with no response to appropriate medical therapy. During the course of hospitalization, the patient developed MODS as evidenced by alteration in renal function, but also cardiovascular dysfunction, coagulation disorders, and hypoglycemia. Several hemodialysis treatments were performed and, along with intensive care, led to resolution of clinical signs and return of urine production.New or unique informationThis report describes resolution of anuria in a dog with AKI and MODS. In this clinical setting, despite a poor prognosis, survival and recovery of adequate renal function were possible with medical management that included hemodialysis.

Chylopericardium is a rare entity in veterinary medicine. In this report we document the development of chylopericardium in two dogs undergoing chronic hemodialysis. An 11-year-old female spayed Labrador retriever (Case 1) presented with acute coughing and lethargy 2 months following initial dialysis catheter placement and initiation of dialysis therapy for severe azotemia. Echocardiography demonstrated severe pericardial effusion and cardiac tamponade. Pericardial fluid analysis was consistent with chylous effusion. The dog underwent a subtotal pericardiectomy with thoracic duct ligation, and a PleuralPort™ was placed. The patient continued to receive outpatient hemodialysis therapy after pericardiectomy for several months until she died acutely at home. A 4-year-old male neutered Doberman (Case 2) was being treated for 2 months with outpatient hemodialysis for management of chronic kidney disease. On presentation for the 17th hemodialysis treatment, the patient had increased respiratory rate. Echocardiography demonstrated pleural and pericardial effusions, and fluid analysis in both cavities was consistent with chylous effusion. Use of tissue plasminogen activator (TPA), clot removal and replacement of the catheter was attempted; however pleural and pericardial effusion continued. The patient was euthanized after 25 hemodialysis sessions as owners elected not to pursue more procedures. In both cases, the cause of the chylopericardium was suspected to be secondary to catheter-associated thrombosis and/or stenosis based on multiple imaging modalities. Despite use of rivaroxaban and clopidogrel concurrently in each case, the chylous effusion persisted. Case series summary: A 2-year-old female spayed Abyssinian cat was evaluated for lethargy and inappetence that first occurred approximately 4 days prior. In addition, urination had not been observed by the owner for 5 days. A Lilium species plant had been brought into the house approximately 5 days before initial evaluation, and intoxication was therefore suspected. Bloodwork revealed anemia, severe azotemia and hyperkalemia. As the cat was anuric with severe azotemia, hyperkalemia and fluid overload, intermittent hemodialysis was recommended. Attempts were made to place a hemodialysis catheter into the external jugular veins bilaterally, but after initial successful venipuncture, the instrumentation would not pass into either vein. During fluoroscopic angiography, no internal jugular veins or external jugular veins caudal to the thoracic inlet were visualized and venous drainage from the head occurred via the vertebral veins. Owing to the anomalous anatomy in the cervical region, a hemodialysis catheter could not be placed into either jugular vein. Alternative sites for the placement of an extracorporeal catheter were discussed with the owner, but humane euthanasia was elected. Relevance and novel information: To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of a cat with bilateral external jugular vein anomalies resulting in blind endings that did not communicate with the vena cava. This was discovered during attempts to place a hemodialysis catheter for the management of anuric renal failure secondary to Lilium species intoxication. While this anatomical variation is likely uncommon, it is an important differential to consider when faced with challenging external jugular vein catheterizations in feline patients. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been used to evaluate dogs with suspected prostatic neoplasia, however, published studies describing MRI characteristics of canine prostatic neoplasia are currently lacking. The aims of the current retrospective case series study were to describe MRI findings of the pelvic region in dogs with a histopathologic or cytologic diagnosis of prostatic neoplasia. Retrospective analysis of these images was then performed by a board‐certified veterinary radiologist for shared imaging characteristics. The most consistent characteristics were heterogeneous hyperintensity of the tumor on T2‐weighted images (10/10) and short tau inversion recovery images (10/10), prostatic capsular margin distortion by the tumor (10/10), cavitations (10/10), complete effacement of the prostatic architecture (9/10), neurovascular bundle (NVB) compression or invasion (9/10), heterogeneous isointensity of the tumor on T1‐weighted images (9/10), and strong contrast enhancement of the tumor (8/10). Additional features included an overlying pattern of distorted radiating striations (7/10), regional lymphadenomegaly (5/10), mineralization within the mass (5/10), urinary bladder trigone involvement (6/10), and post‐prostatic urethral involvement (7/10). These findings supported the use of MRI as an adjunct imaging modality for diagnosis and therapeutic planning of prostatic neoplasia and including prostatic neoplasia as a likely differential diagnosis for dogs with these MRI characteristics.
