Abstract

Chemical functionalization of carbon nanodots (CNDs) offers a valuable opportunity to tailor multifunctionality in these nanocarbons, by engineering the composition of their molecular surface. Therefore, it is important to elucidate the type and amount of CNDs functionalization to be able to design their properties accurately. CNDs are often functionalized through amide coupling without validating the degree of functionalization. As a measure of functionalization, the amounts of primary amines via Kaiser test (KT) or imine reactions of the bare CNDs is often considered. However, this may lead to overestimating the degree of functionalization obtained by the pure amide coupling due to different reaction mechanisms and involved intermediates. Herein, four different CNDs prepared by microwave-assisted synthesis from arginine or citric acid with varying amounts of ethylenediamine are presented. We resorted to a combination of physicochemical methods to provide elemental, structural, and optical information. By that, we developed a method to quantify the degree of functionalization by amide coupling and show that the functionalization is lower than one would expect. Comparing experimental optical features of the CNDs with different computed model systems further allows us to provide a more advanced vision of structure-property relationships in these still elusive nanocarbons.

Abstract

The acceptance by the mycological and lichenological communities, more than 12 years ago, that basidiomycetes tightly associated with green algae or cyanobacteria are lichens, simultaneously established, for the first time, that lichens (including both asco- and basidiolichens) are derived from multiple independent origins. Because approximately one-fifth of all known fungi are lichenized and more than 98% of the diversity of lichens is within the ascomycetes, one crucial question remains to be answered: How many independent origins of lichens took place during the evolution of the ascomycetes? To address this question we have sequenced a 1 kb and a 1.4 kb fragment at the 5' end of the small and large subunits of the nuclear ribosomal DNA, respectively, for 54 species representing 31 orders of ascomycetes. The combined maximum parsimony analysis revealed two equally most parsimonious trees. The ancestral character states (lichenized versus non-lichenized) were reconstructed for every node using maximum likelihood and by taking into consideration phylogenetic uncertainty. The confidence levels for each of the ancestral character states were estimated by reconstructing the evolution of lichenization on a large number of trees randomly sampled within the confidence envelope surrounding the best trees.

Abstract

Structure- and tectonic-related gas migration into Ordovician sandstone reservoirs and its impact on diagenesis history were reconstructed in two fields in the Sbaa Basin, in SW Algeria. This was accomplished by petrographical observations, fluid inclusion microthermometry and stable isotope geochemistry on quartz, dickite and carbonate cements and veins. Two successive phases of quartz cementation (CQ1 and CQ2) occurred in the reservoirs. Two- phase aqueous inclusions show an increase in temperatures and salinities from the first CQ1 diagenetic phase toward CQ2 in both fields. Microthermometric data on gas inclusions in quartz veins reveal the presence of an average of 92 ± 5 mole% of CH4 considering a CH4-CO2 system, which is similar to the present-day gas composition in the reservoirs. The presence of primary methane inclusions in early quartz overgrowths and in quartz and calcite veins suggests that hydrocarbon migration into the reservoir occurred synchronically with early quartz cementation in the sandstones located near the contact with the Silurian gas source rock at 100-140°C during the Late Carboniferous period and the late Hercynian episode fracturing at temperatures between 117 and 185°C, which increased in the NW-direction of the basin. During the fracture filling, three main types of fluids were identified with different salinities and formation temperatures. A supplementary phase of higher fluid temperature (up to 226°C) recorded in late quartz, and calcite veins is related to a Jurassic thermal event. The occurrence of dickite cements close to the Silurian base near the main fault areas in both fields is mainly correlated with the sandstones where the early gas was charged. It implies that dickite precipitation is related to acidic influx. Abstract

Depuis une quarantaine d'années, la reconstitution de l'histoire thermique des bassins sédimentaires s'appuie sur les propriétés chimiques, physiques et moléculaires de la matière organique présente dans les sédiments. Puis progressivement, des marqueurs minéraux se sont avérés être d'excellents témoins de cette histoire thermique. Ce livre (inspiré d'un séminaire de formation continue de l'Université de Paris-Sud) a pour but de présenter d'abord toutes les méthodes organiques et minérales actuellement disponibles incluant celles qui sont apparues très récemment et de se focaliser sur les marqueurs minéraux qui ont atteint un degré de maturité suffisant. L'histoire thermique est reconstituée à partir de géothermomètres, de chronomètres, de chronothermomètres et enfin de géothermomètres cinétiques ou cumulatifs. La combinaison de toutes ces méthodes aboutit à des histoires dont les implications géodynamiques, pétrolières, minières, environnementales sont très importantes. Il n'existe pas une démarche unique puisque les méthodes utilisées ont des domaines d'application différents, des précisions variables et dépendent de la nature des sédiments. De niveau master, cet ouvrage s'adresse aux étudiants et aux enseignants mais également à tous les géologues qui s'intéressent à la thermicité des bassins et qui se demandent quelles sont les méthodes qui peuvent permettre de résoudre leurs énigmes.

International audience; A high resolution mineralogical study (bulk-rock and clay-fraction) was carried out upon the hemipelagic strata of the Angles section (Vocontian Basin, SE France) in which the Valanginian positive C-isotope excursion occurs. To investigate sea-level fluctuations and climate change respectively, a Detrital Index (DI: (phyllosilicates and quartz)/calcite) and a Weathering Index (WI: kaolinite/(illite + chlorite)) were established and compared to second-order sea-level fluctuations. In addition, the mineralogical data were compared with the High Nutrient Index (HNI, based on calcareous nannofossil taxa) data obtained by Duchamp-Alphonse et al. (2007), in order to assess the link between the hydrolysis conditions recorded on the surrounding continents and the trophic conditions inferred for the Vocontian Basin. It appears that the mineralogical distribution along the northwestern Tethyan margin is mainly influenced by sea-level changes during the Early Valanginian (Pertransiens to Stephanophorus ammonite Zones) and by climate variations from the late Early Valanginian to the base of the Hauterivian (top of the Stephanophorus to the Radiatus ammonite Zones). The sea-level fall observed in the Pertransiens ammonite Zone (Early Valanginian) is well expressed by an increase in detrital inputs (an increase in the DI) associated with a more proximal source and a shallower marine environment, whereas the sea-level rise recorded in the Stephanophorus ammonite Zone corresponds to a decrease in detrital influx (a decrease in the DI) as the source becomes more distal and the environment deeper. Interpretation of both DI and WI, indicates that the positive C-isotope excursion (top of the Stephanophorus to the Verrucosum ammonite Zones) is associated with an increase of detrital inputs under a stable, warm and humid climate, probably related to greenhouse conditions, the strongest hydrolysis conditions being reached at the maximum of the positive C-isotope excursion. From the Verrucosum ammonite Zone to the base of the Hauterivian (Radiatus ammonite Zone) climatic conditions evolved from weak hydrolysis conditions and, most likely, a cooler climate (resulting in a decrease in detrital inputs) to a seasonal climate in which more humid seasons alternated with more arid ones. The comparison of the WI to the HNI shows that the nutrification recorded al: the Angles section from the top of the Stephanophorus to the Radiatus ammonite Zones (including the positive C-isotope shift), is associated with climatic changes in the source areas. At that time, increased nutrient inputs were generally triggered by increased weathering processes in the source areas due to acceleration in the hydrological cycle under greenhouse conditions This scenario accords with the widely questioned palaeoenvironmental model proposed by Lini et al., (1992) and suggests that increasing greenhouse conditions are the main factor that drove the palaeoenvironmental changes observed in the hemipelagic realm of the Vocontian Basin, during the Valanginian positive C-isotope shift. This high-resolution mineralogical study highlights short-term climatic changes during the Valanginian, probably associated to rapid changes in the C-cycle. Abstract

International audience; Fluid inclusion homogenization temperatures and three-dimensional hydro-thermo-mechanical modelling were combined to constrain fluid flow, solute and heat transport in the Paris basin, France, focusing on the two main petroleum reservoirs i.e. the Dogger and the Triassic (Keuper) formations. The average homogenization temperatures of two-phase aqueous inclusions in different samples range from 66 degrees C to 88 degrees C in the Dogger calcite cement, from 106 degrees C to 118 degrees C in the Keuper dolomite cement and from 89 degrees C to 126 degrees C in the Keuper quartz and K-feldspar cements. The maximum homogenization temperatures for inclusions in the Keuper quartz and K-feldspar cements were 17-47 degrees C higher than present-day temperatures in the boreholes at similar depths. Processes that might explain higher temperatures in the past were examined through numerical simulations and sensitivity tests. A warmer climate in the Late Cretaceous-Early Tertiary resulted in a temperature rise of only 8 degrees C. Late Cretaceous chalk had a thermal blanketing effect that resulted in simulated temperatures as high as 15-20 degrees C above the present day ones. An additional 300 m deposition and subsequent erosion of chalk, not taken into account so far, has to be considered to simulate the high palaeo-temperatures recorded by fluid inclusions in both reservoirs. In view of the simulated thermal history of the basin, in the Keuper, an age of about 85 Ma is consistent with quartz/K-feldspar temperatures and an age of about 65 Ma is in agreement with the precipitation temperature of the dolomite cement. Our models suggest an age of about 50 Ma for the Dogger calcite cementation.
